he NYSCC will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City at this year’s Suppliers’ Day event on Tuesday, May 2nd beginning at 8:45 a.m. There is a lot of anticipation about the new location. We want to share this exciting day with our past chairs who dedicated their time and knowledge to the society by passing down their legacy to future chemists. To celebrate the debut of the NYSCC Suppliers’ Day in its New York City location, two performers from War Paint, the highly entertaining new musical about Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden— two trailblazing, self-made titans who gave birth to the industry that defined the 20th Century standard of beauty—will be joined by NYSCC past presidents for the ceremonial ribbon cutting event. uppliers’ Day 2017 promises to be one of the most phenomenal Cosmetic trade shows ever to be held in North America. More than 400 exhibitors from all over the world will bring their latest innovations in Raw Materials. In the Innovation Alley, formulators can find new technologies and new ideas never seen before that they can immediately take back to the lab. For the first time, a National SCC pre-show event and courses in cosmetic formulation will be taught by well known industry experts to kick off the 2017 Suppliers’ Day Educational program. Education is robust this year and will continue into Day 1 to explore how technology impacts the supply chain. On Day 2, the focus will shift to discovering how embracing sustainability can boost profitability. For insights on the global market, we welcome presenters from China, Europe, and Brazil. The executive board wishes to thank all the members for their positive feedback and enthusiasm regarding the move of Suppliers’ Day to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, one of the largest venues in the tri-state area. It was a necessary move that allowed the chapter to plan a world class event to properly service long time exhibitors and provide space to accommodate new participants. With 160,000 gross square feet, we were able to add new attractions and details that are sure to add value to the overall experience. Going forward, we hope to capitalize on this year’s process, location, and show manager’s expertise to continue to bring new features to Suppliers’ Day. This event has become the lifeline of the NYSCC Educational program and the special events offered to members throughout the year. One example of how the chapter fulfills its mission is in its support to STEM, which will be displayed on Day 1 at the Future Chemists Workshop. Whether you drive, take the train, or hop on the complimentary NYSCC shuttle from New Jersey, do plan to arrive early. You do not want to miss the ribbon cutting ceremony with the show’s VIPs and War Paint cast members. This year, our VIPs are the NYSCCs past chairs whose dedicated service to the chapter is the real reason behind the success of Suppliers’ Day. Since we are in New York City, why not stay late to enjoy the award celebration which will be held at Stage 48. Be sure to register so that you can applaud the winners of the most sustainable ingredients, have a good time, socialize, and network. With just a few days to show time, we are finally coming home! Directions to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

W

hen traveling to the world’s busiest convention center, it is good to have options. Within New York City, public transportation is always a quick and affordable way to go—and the new 7 Subway Extension across the street from the Javits Center makes the trip even more convenient. If you are coming by car or truck, virtually all roads lead to the Javits Center. Plus, there is plenty of offsite parking within walking distance of the iconic facility. And, if you are looking to burn some calories while blazing a trail to our front door, take advantage of Citi Bike, New York’s new bike sharing system. The NY Waterway is also a convenient and quick way to get to the Javits Center from across the Hudson River, and only one block from the Javits Center. No matter what mode of transportation you use, we think you will agree that getting to the Javits Center has never been easier.

North Concourse The 39th Street Lavazza and the Concourse Café concessions have recently expanded their menus to include Starbucks cappuccino, espresso, and specialty drinks, in addition to salads and sandwiches.

Beginning Cosmetic Chemistry Monday, May 1 • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Instructed by Perry Romanowski – Vice-president, Brains Publishing This course is designed specifically with beginning cosmetic chemists in mind, but information presented will also be useful for QA chemists and seasoned veteran scientists who want to learn about other areas of formulations. By attending this course, attendees will receive an introduction to the industry, basic physiology of skin and hair, obtain formulation techniques, learn a few tools of the trade, and be able to conduct claims substantiation testing, among many other education tools.

Speed Up Development with CAD Computer Aided Design Joy Wolfe

T

echnology’s influence on the world is rapidly growing. Progressive companies strategically utilize robotic devices and concepts to optimize their supply chain efficiency. Such design applications are capable of accurately executing difficult tasks and processes with speed. FIRST Robotics program annually challenges STEM students to create a problem-solving robot by implementing the Engineering Design Cycle. Using CAD (Computer Aided Design), they create innovative 3D designs to virtually test how components function together in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The best CAD model is fabricated with computer driven machines and others are handmade. The Design Cycle can be applied to many industries like Personal Care and Cosmetics. Rapid prototyping leverages a company’s competitiveness and enhances speed to market. Educational programs worldwide promote the Design Cycle and robotics to transform ideas into tangible products. n Speaker – Joy Wolfe Joy Wolfe worked in the IT industry for twelve years. Her last corporate position was International Network Consultant and Marketing Manager for Digital Equipment Corp. before becoming a teacher of Computer Science, Pre-engineering, Robotics, Design, and 3D Animation classes for the past thirteen years. Her passion is preparing STEM students for college and beyond with both technical and soft skills. She enjoys working with young people and their joie de vivre. She is currently teaching and directing students at Robbinsville High School in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Along with her husband, Peter Wolfe, Joy started Nemesis, the Robbinsville FIRST Robotics team, ten years ago and built it into an international powerhouse. The team is run like a high tech business. Working with engineering and business professionals after school, students combine their classroom knowledge with practical application to create a 120 lb. competitive robot using the Engineering Design Cycle, CAD, and 3D modeling.

Before Women’s Marketing Inc., Sinead was Founder and CEO of the premium influencer marketing network, iFabbo, which was acquired by Women’s Marketing Inc. in 2014 and then by the Sway Group in 2016. iFabbo was a spinoff of Sinead’s skincare company, Beautisol, a luxury sunless tanning brand where she utilized the bloggersphere, social media, and other crowdsourcing tactics to successfully launch the company in 2009 and land the brand on HSN (Home Shopping Network) in 2010 where Sinead was the spokesperson for four years. Beautisol was acquired in early 2015 by Five Crowns Capital where Sinead currently serves as an advisor to the private equity group.

Regulatory Compliance in the Digital Age

Formulating for Efficacy™ Mark Chandler

F

ormulating for Efficacy™ concepts were developed by the late Dr. Johann Wiechers, with the goal of maximizing the delivery of cosmetic and pharmaceutical actives to the skin. Formulating for Efficacy™ Software, produced by Dr. Wiechers and Professor Steven Abbott, now supported by ACT Solutions Corp (www.ACTSolutionsCorp.com), uses a sophisticated algorithm for solubility predictions. At the core are Hansen Solubility Parameters, which assess the dispersion, dipolar, and hydrogen bonding forces between an active and potential solvents, lending insight into interactions between formulation components. For new molecules, the FFE™ Software can predict these and other parameters necessary to effective formulation. Active ingredients can be evaluated for such formulation challenges as substantial molar volume, high melting point, and large polarity gap between the active and skin. In addition, the Diffusion Modeler function in the FFE™ Software simulates a Franz diffusion cell experiment, allowing the formulator to follow the path of the active and formulation in the skin over time. A formulator can run through many potential formulation options within a short period of time, allowing for formulation optimization and thus greater chance of success in clinical trials. n Speaker – Mark Chandler Mark Chandler is President of ACT Solutions Corp (Adaptive Cosmetic Technology Solutions), a formulation design consultancy founded in 2012, serving the cosmetic and topical pharmaceutical industries, focusing on Adaptive Aesthetic Design™, Advanced Emulsion Solutions™, and Formulating for Efficacy™, with formulation laboratories in Delaware and Ohio. Mark has been in the industry for over thirty years, most recently serving as skin care applications manager for Croda Inc. He has had roles in Sales, Marketing, Strategic Planning and Acquisitions, and Research and Development. Mark has taught courses for the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) on Cosmetic Formulation, Cosmetic Raw Materials, Liquid Foundation Emulsions, and Low Energy Emulsification for over fifteen years. Mark also is a Research Instructor in the Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design program at the University of Toledo – College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He was awarded Fellow status by the SCC in 2014. Mark has presented technology throughout the United States and in over a dozen other countries on five continents, published numerous articles and book chapters, and has been granted three patents.

Another power player in the field of individual make-up foundation is Lancôme, presenting its “Le Teint Particulier” service. At Bergdorf Goodman, clients can even meet specialists who personally create an exact shade match called “Sensual Skin Enhancer”. To individualize Cosmetics you need to know more about the consumer. Asking questions is not enough to know the customer’s needs. Skin testing devices can help to close this gap. It is important to identify which parameters are easy to measure in a retail environment and how they can influence a recommendation. n Speaker – Jadir Nunes Dr. Nunes’ professional career has spanned more than thirty-five years working in pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies in innovation, research, development, safety, efficacy evaluations, and quality control areas for finished good producers and active ingredient suppliers. Some examples of companies that he worked for include: Johnson & Johnson, Schering-Plough, Natura, and Stiefel/GSK. Dr. Nunes has been an Independent Consultant at SLINC (Scientific Learning and Innovation Consulting) since 2015. Jadir is an active board member of Brazilian Association of Cosmetology (ABC) since 2000, serving as president from 2005 to 2009. He has been representing this association and Brazil at the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemistries (IFSCC) since 2008. He served as President of the IFSCC from 2013 to 2014. He is also a Scientific Council Member of Institute of Technology and Studies for Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance (ITEHPEC). Dr. Nunes educational background is in pharmacy with an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Technology/Cosmetology by Pharmaceutical Sciences College at University of São Paulo – USP. He has also completed post graduate work in Marketing at the Superior School of Marketing – ESPM. Most recently, Jadir serves as Professor of Cosmetology and Coordinator of the Cosmetic Technology Course at Oswaldo Cruz College – FOC. n Speaker – Hong Meng Dr. Hong Meng, M.D. is a Professor and Chief Physician. Su Dr. Evelyn Su is the president, co-founder, and Chief Scientific Officer of Sino Lion, a leading innovative and new technological materials company that serves worldwide markets in the personal care, pharmaceutical, health care, and related industries. Dr. Su obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1993 from University of Connecticut located in Storrs, Connecticut. After graduation, Dr. Su worked as a Scientist at Pfizer during 1993-1995. In July 1995, Dr. Su co-founded Sino Lion USA, and moved its operation to 1 World Trade Center in New York City until the horrific destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. She feels extremely fortunate that she is still alive today. Dr. Su is the author of the book Asian Botanicals (written in English) as well as numerous peer-reviewed academic journal articles. She has given scores of invited talks and conference presentations as either a keynote or invited speaker in the United States and at international conferences. Dr. Su has extensive experience in inventing and managing new materials technologies and commercializing various technologies into marketable products worldwide. She has successfully led Sino Lion in collaborating with a number of Fortune 500 companies in bringing technologies into the marketplace either in the form of Open-Innovation, exclusive co-development programs, or non-exclusive technology commercialization. Since 1995, Dr. Su has worked extensively as an innovative entrepreneur in both the United States and China. Under her leadership, Sino Lion has become a globally approved supplier to a growing number of Fortune 500 companies.

Supervision and Management of Cosmetic Products and Ingredients in China

I

n this presentation, the definition and classification of cosmetics in China will be elaborated, as well as the corresponding supervision and management measures, especially the regulation on imported cosmetics. The supervision of cosmetic ingredients, including new cosmetic ingredients will also be discussed. In addition, the development trend of the policies and regulations will be introduced. n Speaker – Lili Tao Ms. Tao has a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She is the Director of the Regulation Information department, Beijing Daily Chemical Association. In addition, Ms. Tao is also Deputy Secretary-General of the National Cosmetic Enterprises Development Association. Lili Tao is primarily engaged in research on regulation policies of the cosmetic industry, participating in the formulation of regulations and standards, conducting studies and training on laws and regulations, and organizing academic exchanges with foreign countries. Ms. Tao has participated in a number of research projects commissioned by the Chinese Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) including: classification and supervision model of cosmetics based on the principle of risk management, whitening efficacy evaluation of cosmetics, and supervision of cosmetic e-commerce business.
