Season Outlook The Norwich University men’s ice hockey team, which captured the program’s third NCAA national championship last season, will be looking to make it back-to-back titles this winter. The Cadets put together an impressive 26-1-4 overall record last year en route to winning the ECAC East regular season and tournament titles. NU lost first-team All-Americans Ryan Klingensmith and Eric Tallent to graduation, but cupboard certainly is not bare as a host of talented players are returning to the fold for this season’s title defense. Included in that group is second-team All-American Chad Anderson, who will serve as team captain this season as a senior. Anderson and sophomore Blake Forkey led the squad in scoring last season with 37 points apiece. Sophomore Kyle Thomas, who paced the club with 23 goals as a freshman last year, will continue to add scoring punch up front as well. Norwich is bringing back a total of 12 players who scored at least 11 points last season, including junior Emmond Bell and sophomore PierOliver Cotnoir. With that being said, the offense, which averaged nearly five goals per game a year ago, should not be a problem in 2010-11. All of the major holes to fill come on the defensive end of the ice beginning with the departure of Klingensmith, who backstopped NU’s run to the 2010 national championship. Klingensmith, who posted a 1.29 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage last winter, was the main reason why Norwich allowed just 43 goals is 31 games. Tallent and fellow blueliners Tyler Stitt and Steve Coon, who helped keep opposing offenses at bay throughout the season, have also moved on. These departures mean that senior Greg Eskedjian and juniors Shawn Baker, Owen Carpino and Pasha Kozhokin will need to step up their game. Baker and Carpino have been elected as the team’s assistant captains and should provide leadership along the blueline for the Cadets. All four players have made significant strides since arriving at Norwich, and the success of the Cadets this year will hinge quite a bit on how they perform as upperclassmen. The Cadets will be gunning for the program’s 13th straight ECAC East regular season title this year after cruising to their 12th consecutive crown last season. Norwich will also look to defend its PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout title and its ECAC East Tournament crown in 2010-11. Norwich head coach Mike McShane, who was named the AHCA “Coach of the Year” for the fourth time in his illustrious career, won his 300th career game at NU last winter and has shown no signs of slowing down as he enters his 16th season behind the Cadets’ bench. The veteran mentor has assembled another extremely talented roster, and the sky is the limit for this group. Norwich is welcoming 10 new players into its program this season. The group, which is comprised of 11 forwards and one goaltender, includes players from both the United States and Canada.

2010-11 Media Guide

The Cadets open their 2010-11 campaign on home ice when they welcome ECAC East foes University of New England and Southern Maine to Kreitzberg Arena on Nov. 19-20. The opening night game against University of New England will be a special one, as the Cadets will raise their 2010 NCAA national championship banner to the rafters prior to the contest. The following weekend, Norwich will travel to Plattsburgh, N.Y., to take part in the Primelink Great Northern Shootout. Other highlights on the 2010-11 slate include the annual Northfield Savings Bank Invitational (Dec. 31-Jan. 1), and a home game with arch-rival Middlebury (Feb. 4).

Head Coach

Mike McShane has assembled an impressive resume at Norwich University as he begins his 16th season. He’s led the Cadets to three NCAA Division III national championships and eight Division III Frozen Fours. NU has also won the ECAC East regular season title 12 straight times under McShane, and the ECAC East tournament crown eight times. His teams have won 20 games or more 10 times. He has also been selected as the Division II/III National “Coach of the Year” four times throughout his tenure at Norwich, including last season after leading the Cadets to their third national championship. McShane was selected as the 10th head coach of the Norwich men’s ice hockey program prior to the 1995-96 season. In the 15 years since, he has posted a 319-90-21 record. He became the program’s all-time winningest coach during the 200809 season, and he reached the 300-win plateau in NU’s 12-0 drubbing of Southern New Hampshire early in the 2009-10 campaign. Under McShane’s guidance, the Cadets have never posted a losing season. A native of Wakefield, Mass., McShane graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1971 as the third-leading scorer in Wildcats’ history. In 2003, McShane earned an M.Ed. from Boston University. He got his start in coaching at New Hampton (N.H.) Prep School in 1972. He led the Huskies to three Division I Prep Championships in six years before becoming an assistant coach at Dartmouth College in 1978. During his two seasons at Dartmouth, the Big Green won a pair of Ivy League titles and advanced to the NCAA semifinals both years. McShane was named the head coach at Division I St. Lawrence University in 1980, leading the Saints to a 95-65-6 record in five seasons. In just a couple of years, he turned a dismal program into a national contender. He led the Saints to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1983. McShane left St. Lawrence in 1985 to become the head coach at Providence College. He led Providence to NCAA playoff bids in 1989, 1991 and 1992. He was named the New England “Coach of the Year” in 1989. He left Providence in 1994 to become a consultant for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League before coming to Norwich. McShane won his 400th career game as a collegiate coach on Jan. 4, 2003, when Norwich defeated Trinity, 4-1. He won his 500th career game on Feb. 16, 2007, when NU beat Bowdoin, 7-4. 2009-10 Season In Review

One of the keys to success with any sports team is recognizing your shortcomings and making the adjustments necessary to take your club to the next level. If you do it just right, it can take you right to the top. It might even take you to a championship. In the spring of 2009 the shortcomings of the Norwich University Cadets were pretty clear for all to see. Coming off a 13-8-4 season and an ECAC East Quarterfinal round loss to UMass-Boston, the Cadets had to only look at the stat sheet. The 2008-2009 Cadets had scored only 85 goals in 25 games. 28 of those goals were lost to graduation, including the 17 scored by senior Nakita Kashirsky. Norwich had been solid defensively, allowing only 55 goals against, and their entire defense and goaltender Ryan Klingensmith were all coming back. But they needed an immediate injection of offense. Coaches Mike McShane and Steve Mattson vigorously attacked that need. The effort took them to the four corners of North America … from the prairies of Saskatchewan to the sunny shores of Florida, with stops in the hockey hotbeds of Ontario, Quebec and Massachusetts in between. When the dust had settled and the frequent flyer cards had been put away, Norwich had landed a class of 12 talented new players … a goaltender to backup Klingensmith … and eleven new forwards. It is an old axiom in sports … you never want to have to rely too much on freshmen. But for this Norwich hockey team, there was no other choice. The new kids were going to have to step right in and contribute right away. But the coaching staff knew that when they recruited them. This freshman class was a freshman class in name only. They arrived in Northfield ready to play. They needed to be. This was to be a special year in the annuls of the game on ice at Norwich … the 100th Anniversary season. And they would make a year Norwich fans will remember for the next 100. The beginning was nothing spectacular … two workman like wins in Maine. But in 4-2 and 4-3 wins over the University of New England and Southern Maine, freshmen Scott Schroeder, Matt McCann, Kyle Thomas, Tory Allan, and Blake Forkey accounted for six of the eight goals. With their first roadtrip behind them, the Cadets headed home to Kreitzberg Arena for an extended homestand. Hosting the Primelink Great Northern Shootout, Norwich gave the home crowd an immediate taste of what this new class was all about. NU’s home opener was a 9-1 blowout win over Wisconsin-Stout. Freshmen Forkey (hat trick) and Thomas (two goals) caught everyone’s attention, and their classmates Steven Schroeder and Colin Mulvey also scored in the rout. The next night in the Primelink

championship game the young Cadets matched up with their longtime rivals from Plattsburgh State, and after a classic 1-1 tie, it took a shootout to crown Norwich the winner for the sixth time in the twelve year history of the event. It also sent the Cadets off on a big time roll. Their talent and depth on defense and the steady play of Klingensmith in nets allowed to young corps of forwards to really crank it up. Playing with a confidence belying their years, Norwich raced to five straight home ice wins, outscoring their five opponents 35-2. The final win in that run, a 4-0 victory over Curry in the opening round of the Times Argus Invitational Tournament, ran their record to 8-0-1. It seemed the TA Title Game would be just a formality. But no one bothered to tell the Potsdam State Bears. The underdog Bears rallied with a pair of goals in the final 2:30 to force the game to overtime, and this time it was the visitors who shocked the Cadets in the deciding shootout. The shock might actually have done the Cadets a favor. Just three days later the Plattsburgh Cardinals were back in town for the teams’ regular season meeting and Norwich played arguably their best game of the season to that point. Thomas scored three goals and Allan added the pother in a 41 win that was not really that close. Norwich had finished a nine game homestand with a record of 7-0-2 with a split of two shootouts. On the road for the first time since November the Cadets beat Bowdoin in a Friday night game in Maine. The next afternoon, playing in one of the rinks where they have more difficulty than any other, Colby’s Alfond Arena, they stared their first loss of the season right in the face. Outshooting the White Mules by a two to one margin ,they still trailed goaltender Cody McKinney and the Mules 1-0 into the final minute. But with fourteen seconds left, freshman Pier Oliver Cotnoir banged in the game tying goal, and the Cadets escaped Maine with a three point weekend. Back home for four more games the Cadets kicked it right back into gear … four wins … a 26-6 scoring margin … two shutouts for Klingensmith (giving him five for the season) … and major contributions from the freshman, as well as veterans Chad Anderson, Craig Serino, D. J. Fimiani, Tim Houston and Emmond Bell … Norwich built their record to 14-0-3 as they readied for their first extended road trip … four straight … of the season. The trip started in another of those places the Cadets just seem to have trouble in … UMass-Boston. Facing the team that knocked them out of the playoffs a year before was added incentive for the veterans, but the Cadets had to fight for every inch of ice against the Beacons. The Cadets

scratched out second period goals from Thomas and Serino, and Klingensmith’s 22 saves made them standup for a 2-0 shutout win. That was just the first half of a tough weekend in Boston. The next afternoon saw them in a tooth and nail struggle with perennial challenger Babson. A 2-1 Cadet lead disappeared as the Beavers scored a pair of goals 57 seconds apart early in the third, and as the period dwindled down Norwich again faced their first loss of the season. But this time it would be Forkey, with his second goal of the game with 50 seconds left, that would keep NU unbeaten. Still on the road the next weekend, the Cadets hiked over the mountain to meet their arch-rivals, the Middlebury Panthers. Trailing 1-0 late in the second period ,Norwich tied it on a Cotnoir goal, then got the game winner from defenseman Eric Tallent mid-way in the third. Norwich survived three waived off goals by the Panthers down the stretch before Shawn Baker’s empty netter sealed a 3-1 victory that ran their record to 16-0-4 … and sent them down the road to Williams. We have talked here about places that give Norwich trouble. No place in the country gives NU more trouble than the Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Some of that credit of course has to go to the team that plays there. On their home ice the Williams Ephs just seem to know how to play the Cadets. And so it was again on this Saturday afternoon in early February. Norwich outshot the Ephs 4316, but only one of those shots alluded Eph’s goalie Ryan Purdy. Williams 2 Norwich 1 … Twenty-one games into the season Norwich was undefeated no longer. Back home at Kreitzberg the Cadets went back to work … two goals from Cotnoir in a 6-3 win over Castleton State … third period goals from Baker and Steven Schroeder breaking a 3-3 tie in a 5-3 win over Skidmore … back on the road to wrap up the regular season with wins over Connecticut College and Tufts … outshooting the Camels and Jumbos by a combined 109-26. In the Tufts game freshman Craig Carbonneau scored in his old high school rink, becoming the 21st different Cadet to score a goal on the season. Next stop … the playoffs. The second season began with the ECAC East quarterfinals against the U of New England … Norwich was not about to let what happened to them against UMassBoston happen again … eight goals from seven different goal scorers (Thomas with a pair) … 8-1 Cadets. The ECAC East semi-finals and finals returned to Kreitzberg the following weekend. Old rival New England College hung with NU to the end, but goals from Mulvey, Steven Schroeder and Thomas and twenty-three saves from Klingensmith gave them a 3-1 win and sent them into the

ECAC East Championship Game against Babson. After a scoreless first period, Allan and Scott Schroeder netted second period goals and Bell added an early third period score for a 3-0 lead. A late goal got the Beavers on the board, but defenseman Greg Eskedjian’s empty netter nailed down their eighth ECAC East title. Next Stop … the NCAA’s. The Cadets opened NCAA play with a quarterfinal matchup with Elmira at Kreitzberg. It was a a struggle from the beginning. The Soaring Eagles scored just over seven minutes into the game and then turned the game over to their veteran goaltender Casey Tuttle. And he nearly stole the season away from NU. Into the final minute of the game it remained 1-0 Elmira … then one of the freshmen … Steven Schroeder … found a way. His goal at 19:12 sent Kreitzberg into a frenzy and the game into an overtime. And just 2:12 into the extra session Cotnoir sent them to the Division Three Frozen Four in Lake Placid. Norwich was back in Lake Placid for the second time in three years. After a semi-final loss to St. Norbert in the ’08 tournament the Cadets were looking for a different result. To get the result they wanted they would need first to deal with Plattsburgh … again. In two previous meets they had won twice … albeit once in a shootout. Serino’s first period goal got them the lead this time, but a Cardinal goal seven minutes into the second squared the game at one. It stayed that way until late in the period … when again Mr. Clutch stepped to the fore. Cotnoir scored his second big goal of the NCAA’s, putting the Cadets on top with less than a minute left in the second. Veteran defenseman Steve Coon’s goal eight minutes into the third gave them some insurance, and NU held on for a 3-2 win … Klingensmith with 29 saves … and sent them into the finals against St. Norbert. What followed will live forever in Division Three tournament history. Chad Anderson’s first period goal gave the Cadets a 1-0 lead … but they would not score again for a long long time. Sam Tikka’s goal tied it for St. Norbert midway in the second … and the teams would settle into an epic struggle. The shots told the story … 14-9 Norwich in the second … 15-6 Norwich in the third. But St. Norbert goaltender B.J. O’Brien was a wall. Into overtime … shots 13-9 for the Cadets in the first OT … 21-5 for NU in the second OT … into the final minute of that session … the 100th minute of the game … the final game of Norwich’s 100th season of hockey … Thomas in the right corner, to Cotnoir in front … a rebound … and Norwich’s third NCAA Division Three National Championship.

Officially opened in 1998, Kreitzberg Multipurpose Arena meets the long-standing need for a modern intercollegiate ice hockey and skating facility at Norwich. It also enhanced the recreational and athletic opportunities for all members of the Norwich community. Equally important, Kreitzberg Arena provides the University with a flexible and attractive space for cultural presentations, concerts and campus convocations. Kreitzberg Arena received plenty of use its first year with the Cadet hockey team playing a school-record 21 home games. Norwich University and Kreitzberg Arena served as the host site for the 1999, 2003 and 2004 NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey championships. This 1,400-seat arena can accommodate up to 5,000 spectators for special events. When the final phase is complete, the new energy-efficient arena will help consolidate University sports and recreational facilities into a single athletic complex, which will also include Andrews Hall and Shapiro Field House. Plans also call for improved access and parking for students and visitors to the campus. Kreitzberg Arena offers many revenue-producing opportunities that were previously closed to the University. Above all, the new arena is an exceptional recreational resource for students, faculty and staff and enhance the sense of community that is already a defining feature of the Norwich experience. Kreitzberg Arena has many special features not offered in any other Division III facility in the country. Here are some of the technical achievements.

100 Years of Norwich Hockey The 2009-10 Norwich University hockey season will be a memorable one, as the school celebrates 100 years of hockey. Norwich began playing hockey in 1909 when the Cadets skated against a team from Barre in their inaugural game. The next 100 years provided a plethora of successful teams, coaches and players that have helped mold the program into one of the best in the nation to this day. The tradition of the Norwich hockey team runs deep at the Northfield, Vt., school. The program started in 1909 when the best skaters at the The 1909-10 Norwich hockey team university organized themselves to form a hockey team that was known as the “Red Sox.” That team won two of the three games that it played, and the following year the athletic association recognized it as an official team. The Cadets, as they were now known as, were led by cadets Stebbins ’10 and Strobell ’10. They had to compete against local high schools and other athletic associations because there were no other area college to play. The team’s first official game was a loss to a Barre squad. That was the only contest they were able to play that season as the remainder of the schedule was canceled due to an early spring. The team lost its status as a recognized athletic activity in 1910-11 due to a lack of financial funding. In 1911-12, the team was reorganized and played games with Goddard Seminary and St. Michael’s College. The squad began playing on the school’s

Game at Taylor Arena, 1958 tennis courts beginning in the 1912-13 campaign. The Cadets battled Goddard Seminary, Dartmouth College, Vermont Academy and West Point during that season, which was again cut short due to an early spring. At the start of the 1937-38 season, the team began playing games on Sabine Field. The program has been alive and well ever since, with the one exception being 1943-46 when it took a break due to World War II. The Cadets moved into the old Taylor Riding Hall at the start of the 1948-49 season, and accomodations were made for 500 spectators. In 1950, Mrs. Moses Taylor Nicholson provided funds to improve the conditions of the new indoor hockey rink. These improvements included better lighting, dressing rooms for the teams and addition seating for spectators. Legendary head coach Bob Priestley took over the program in the 1951-52 season, and he promptly led the Cadets to a 13-2-0 record – the best in the country that season. The 1952-53 squad, which went 11-2-1, was a memorable one as it was inducted into the Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

100 Years of Norwich Hockey

With the size of the riding hall found to be less than regulation for a hockey rink, the building is practially torn down and rebuilt in 1956. Taylor Arena is significantly enlarged in width to more than meet the standard requirements, and facilities for artificial ice are installed. Funds for this project were provided by Mrs. Nicholson as well as alumni and friends of the university. Prior to the 1964 season, an addition was built onto the north end of the building, which provided more lockerrooms, dressing rooms for coaches and officials and a room in which to store the zamboni. The 1966-67 season saw the Cadets finish with a 15-7-1 overall record and qualify for the ECAC Playoffs for the first time. On March 4, 1969, the roof of Taylor Arena collapsed and left the squad without a place to play the ECAC Playoffs. The Cadets went on to defeat Merrimack, 4-2, before falling to AIC, 7-6, in the finals. The 1970-71 campaign yielded Norwich’s first All-American as Jim Grip earned the honor.

Charles Holden and Roger Guillemette, 1967

Cam McGregor, who finished his career as NU’s all-time leader in points (209), was named an All-American in 1975-76. Bill Cantwell was Norwich’s first two-time All-American (1972-73 and 1973-74). Coach Priestley went out in style in his 28th and final season in 1978-79 as the Cadets won 19 games and advanced to the finals ECAC West Playoffs. Priestley finished his Norwich coaching career with 291 victories. Don (Toots) Cam McGregor, class of 1976 Cahoon took over the reins of the program in 1979, and the Cadets won 48 games in three seasons before he resigned in 1982. Anthony Mariano, who had served as the school’s head men’s soccer coach and as an assistant on the hockey staff, was elevated to head coach in 1982. In his first season as head coach (1982-83), Mariano led Norwich to the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in school history. Chris Trinceri, who played an important role on the club, was named an All-American following the season. Frank Simonetti, who was tabbed an AllAmerican following the 1983-84 campaign, went on to become the first Norwich hockey player to ever suit up in the National Hockey League. The Melrose, Mass., native played parts of four seasons with the Boston Bruins. After a 1-8-0 start, the 1986-87 squad finished 16-13-1 and reached the NCAA Playoffs again. Mariano was named the College Division “Coach of the Year” by Head coach Don “Toots” Cahoon with Steve Cameron

100 Years of Norwich Hockey the American Hockey Coaches’ Association. Mariano stepped down as hockey coach in 1992 to assume his current duties as the school’s athletic director. He compiled 144 career victories and led the team to eight postseason appearances in his 10 years behind the Cadets’ bench. Bill Cahill ’73 was hired to replace Mariano, and he posted a 34-33-1 record in three seasons before resigning in 1995. In the spring of 1995, Mike McShane was introduced as head Head coach Tony Mariano with coach of the Norwich Chris Trinceri and Bill Gavin Cadets. The Cadets played home games at the Barre BOR during the 1997 season while Kreitzberg Arena was being built. In 1998, the Cadets moved into their current home, Kreitzberg Arena. The state-of-the-art facility has housed the Norwich hockey program for the past 11 seasons. The 1999-2000 season was an incredibly special one for the university as the Cadets captured their first NCAA national championship. The team set a program record with 29 victories and defeated St. Thomas, 2-1, in the national title game. Three years later in 2002-03, the Cadets won another national title. This one was perhaps even more special as the final four was

played at Kreitzberg Arena. Norwich knocked off Oswego State, 21, to win the national championship game. In addition to the two national titles, McShane has led the Cadets to a school record 293 victories, seven Division III Frozen Fours, 11 ECAC East regular season titles and seven ECAC East tournament titles. His teams have won 20 games or more nine times. He has also been selected as the Division III/II National “Coach of the Year” three times throughout his tenure at Norwich. McShane’s players have received 22 All-America certificates. Kurtis McLean, who is the only four-time first team All-American in NCAA Division III history, has gone on to play for the NHL’s New York Islanders. He also ranks as NU’s all-time leader in goals with 118. Keith Aucoin, who was a three-time All-American, has gone on to play for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals. He still ranks as Norwich’s all-time leader in points (240) and assists (124). Over the last several years, the Norwich women’s hockey program has grown into a national power as well. Under the direction of Mark Bolding ’95, the Cadets have gone from club status to ECAC East champions in just a few short years. In just its second varsity season last year, the Norwich women won the conference tournament title and qualified for the NCAA Playoffs.
