2011-12 Norwich University Swimming & Diving

2011-12 Season Preview Norwich University men's and women's swimming coach Laura Dunn is anxiously awaiting the start of the 2011-12 season. And with good reason. Dunn and the Cadets have one of the largest men's rosters in recent history and a strong group of returning talent in the women's program. "There is a nice spread of talent and depth, especially on the men's team," she said. "I like what's been happening in practices. We'll have to see how things work out as we get into competition. "The men were fourth last year in the New England meet," she added. "I'd like to see us, what we have returning, make a move towards the top two this year." NU's men will be led in the pool distance events by senior Mike Zemanek (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and junior Andrew Grubbs (York, Pa.). "Mike was our highest scorer at the New Englands last year, as he was on the podium for each of his events," Dunn said. Looking into the sprints, NU has senior co-captain Kevin Weber (Stephentown, N.Y.) available for the backstroke along with freshman Lance Webster (Windham, Me.). "Those two will help us immensely in the medley relays," Dunn said. "They will be good to have as lead legs." Junior Chris Hevey (Biddeford, Me.), the Cadets' other captain, will lead the way in the breaststroke with sophomore Patrick Bowden (Cumberland, Me.) also in the mix. In the fly, Dunn mentioned sophomore Brandon Kelly (Centreville, Md.) and freshman Shakeel Ballantyne (Jonesboro, Ga.), while the freestyle individual events will be a "combination of any of the above," according to Dunn. As for the diving area, NU's head coach hopes junior David Rhoden (Farmington, Conn.) can return to form after placing second at the New England Championships last season. She also has fellow junior Matt Kaye (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) available. "They are a good combination," Dunn said. "We'll need to see if David can shake off some early-season injuries, while Matt dove as a freshman and then left school and spent 18 months in Afghanistan." On the women’s side, senior co-captain Felicia Jones (Sherburne, N.Y.) is the top returning sprinter in freestyle and backstroke. She has been a relay finalist at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) championship the last three seasons. “Felicia really stepped up her training last year and saw the results with all the best times at the Championships,” Dunn said. Classmate Molly Andreo (Bedford, N.H.) is a three-year varsity member and enters her first season as a team captain. She swims mid-distance freestyle. “Molly never shies away from a challenge,” Dunn said. “She is a very hard worker, as well as a positive and enthusiastic member of the team.” NOTES: NU's campaign begins with three in a row in the Goodyear pool at Plumley Armory. The Cadets host SUNYPotsdam Nov. 5, Colby-Sawyer Nov. 12 and St. Michael's Nov. 16. … The 2011 Great Northeast Invitational (Dec. 4-5) and the 2012 NEISDA Championships (Feb. 11-19) also highlight the schedule.
