Head Coach Mark Bolding Prior to his current post, Bolding served two stints as an assistant coach for the Norwich men's hockey team under successful mentor Mike McShane. Bolding was the men's top assistant coach during 1995-96 season, and helped recruit one of the finest recruiting classes in Norwich hockey history including the likes of Marc Bellemare, Curt Healey, Mike Ludwar, Bryce Herperger and Jason Lumsden. After a few years away from Norwich working in the engineering consulting industry, Bolding returned to Norwich in 1998 to become an assistant coach to the men's team. In addition to his coaching position, Bolding also served as the marketing director and manager for Kreitzberg Arena, and he sold over 650 season tickets during the team's first year in the building. During the 1999-2000 season, Bolding helped the Norwich men win its first national championship, with a dramatic 2-1 win over Wisconsin-Superior. A native of Red Deer, Alb., Bolding was a standout defenseman during his collegiate playing days at Norwich, serving as the team captain for three of his four seasons. Bolding finished his NU career with 94 points. His 73 assists put him alongside the all-time career assist leaders at the school. In 2005, Bolding was inducted into the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1995 Norwich graduate, Bolding holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi fraternities during his undergraduate days. He held engineering positions in Chicago, Boston and Montpelier, Vt., before returning to Norwich University as the Director of Engineering Admissions. Bolding and his wife Kari (also a NU graduate) reside in Northfield with their five children: Christian (11), Corinne (9), Dayne (6), Kylee (4) and Makenna (18 months).

Head Coach Mark Bolding is entering his ninth season as head coach of the Norwich women's ice hockey team and fifth as a varsity program. He has been the driving force behind the team's rapid improvement in the Division III women's hockey ranks that culminated last March with the Cadets winning their first national championship with a 5-2 win over RIT in only their fourth season. Bolding has guided the Cadets to a 76-29-9 record in four seasons and has been named the American Hockey Coaches' Association (AHCA) National "Coach of the Year" the last two seasons, as well as the New England Hockey Writers' Women's "Coach of the Year." Under Bolding, the Norwich women's hockey team has quickly asserted itself as one the premier programs in the country. He has coached 17 ECAC East All-Conference players, six All-New England Hockey Writers All-Stars and two AHCA All-Americans in Amanda Wilks (2009) and Sophie Leclerc (2011). Last year's national championship team won its first ECAC East regular season title by going unbeaten with a 17-0-1 record in league play and made its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. NU set team records in wins (25) and conference victories (17). NU has come full circle under Bolding's leadership since the squad's inaugural varsity campaign in 2007-08, when Bolding led the Cadets to a fourth-place finish in the ECAC East and hosted a conference tournament quarterfinal game. The Cadets ended the season with an 12-10-2 record. In just its second year, Norwich won its first ECAC East Tournament title after going 13-2-1 in its last 16 games leading up to a 4-0 win over Salve Regina in the conference championship game. NU made its first NCAA Tournament appearance before falling to eventual runnerup Elmira 3-2 in the quarterfinals. The following year, the Cadets took it a few steps further by repeating as ECAC East Tournament champions with a 3-0 win over New England College. NU reeled off its first two NCAA Tournament victories with a dramatic 32 come-from-behind victory over Plattsburgh in the quarterfinals and then another 3-2 win over Elmira in the semifinals. However, the Cinderella run came to a halt in the finals with a loss to defending national champion Amherst.

2011-12 Season Preview

by Derek Dunning, NU Sports Information Last March the Norwich women's ice hockey team answered the prevailing question of "is this the year?" with a resounding 5-2 statement win at top-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology in the NCAA D-III National Championship game. After making the title game in only its third year as a varsity program in 2010, the Cadets came full circle in 2011. NU sent off the remaining six members of the inaugural recruiting class on top of the D-III world, as national champions. "We certainly had the motivation with the returning players we had to get back to the Frozen Four," said Norwich head coach Mark Bolding as he enters his fifth season behind the bench. "We brought in 13 new kids to change our depth and that was one of the biggest keys to our success. It was a little rough early having so many new faces in the starting lineup, but by the second half of the year we really started rolling." Norwich will enter the 2011-12 season with a few holes to fill, headlined by the loss of the program's all-time point leader and three-year team captain, Sophie Leclerc. She led the nation in points with 26 goals and 28 assists for 54 points. She concluded her illustrious career in the Maroon & Gold with 72 goals and 91 assists for 163 points. "Our biggest recruit was the fact that Sophie could come back last year and finish off her four years of eligibility," said Bolding, who is the two-time reigning AHCA National Coach of the Year. "She not only was our top scorer and the best player in the country, but she was a great leader as well for us and that's what we needed. It was great for her and the other seniors to be able to go out that way." However, the Cadets do return 21 players from last year's national championship squad, including six of the seven top scorers. Bolding has the luxury of returning all three members of his most productive line during the second half of the season with seniors Julie Fortier and Melissa Rundlett, as well as sophomore Renee Lortie. Fortier (Saint-Malachie, Quebec) heads the list of returners after ranking second in the nation to only Leclerc last season with 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points. She currently sits at 62 goals and 58 assists for 120 points and enters 2011-12 just 43 points shy of Leclerc's program record. Rundlett (Saco, Maine) will take over the captain's 'C' from Leclerc this season after establishing new career highs with 18 goals and 17 assists for 35 points. She also

7

led the team with six game-winning tallies. Lortie (Cornwall, Ontario) was named the ECAC East Rookie of the Year after leading all conference freshmen in scoring with 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points. "Julie [Fortier], Renee [Lortie], and Rundlett are comfortable with each other and finished last year as probably the top line in all of D-III so we're hoping they can continue," Bolding said. The Cadets' second line though will be one of the keys heading into the season. Junior winger Jillayne DeBus (Howell, Mich.) returns after an outstanding first year with NU after transferring in from Elmira following her freshman season. DeBus tallied an even 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points while playing alongside Leclerc and the departed Brittane Michaud. She'll be joined by two freshmen this year in Tyne Gove (Berwick, Ontario) and Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.). "Jill can put up numbers consistently and we're confident we've got two quality freshmen forwards in Tyne and Kaycie that should be able to step up into top-six roles and give us two solid lines," Bolding said. Also returning up front are senior Mollie Fitzpatrick (0-3-3), juniors Stephanie Invernizzi (5-6-11) and Jackie Perez (3-5-8), as well as sophomores Meghan Papagno (4-5-9), Elle Kadel (1-5-6) and Haley Gibson (4-711). "At the end of the day we're looking for depth," Bolding said. "I think if the year can start how it finished last year with all four lines playing hard and playing the system, we'll be a good hockey team. Some people will put up more points than others but at least if we're playing like that the burden won't just fall on Julie or Rundlett if the freshmen play well and the upperclassmen step up and seize the opportunity." Although Norwich had plenty of horses up front, arguably the greatest difference from its runner-up year to its championship year was the corps of six defensemen. Jim Plumer set the model at Amherst on what six strong defensemen can do in Division III women's hockey by winning back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010. "To have the ability to play six defense all game and in almost any situation was a big difference from the year before," Bolding said. "They could rush the puck and be offensive one minute and then the next could put up really good defensive efforts in our own end." Heading the list of returners are seniors Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Sarianne Lynn (Wethersfield, Conn.), who were both 2011 ECAC East First Team selections. Lynn led all D-III defensemen with six goals and 23 assists for 29 points, while Wilks chipped

2011-12 Season Preview in with two goals and 19 assists for 21 points. NU also returns four sophomores in Brittany Sharman (Ayer's Cliff, Quebec), Kayla Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario), Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec), and Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) who now have a full year under their belts after playing a vital part to the program turning the corner last year. "Our defensive corps is excellent," Bolding said. "Amanda Wilks and Sarianne Lynn can both dominant a game offensively and then the four sophomore defensemen are so versatile and can do everything. They play a good defensive game and they help generate offense. We feel really good on the back end." In goal, the Cadets will be without their big-game goaltender that they have leaned on for the past four seasons in Cindy Fortin. "It's like losing your Tom Brady in the net," Bolding said. "She finished the way any goalie would want to finish though, on top. For a small goalie who many coaches and opponents didn't believe she was a great goalie, she did all we could ask from her. But, now it's time for someone else. We're looking for someone to jump in and assume the role." Battling for the starting job will be sophomores Joanie Plamondon (Pont-Rouge, Quebec) and Kelly Fisk (Hannibal, N.Y.). Plamondon was 4-1-1 last year with a 0.99 goals against average and a .912 save percentage. Fisk was 3-1-0 with a 0.75 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. "We've got confidence in the goaltenders we have in Jo Plamondon and Kelly Fisk. We'll wait to see which of those two steps up. Hopefully they'll share the burden, but a coach always look for someone to step up and be the 'go to' goalie which we're hoping one of them will do. The Cadets will once again face a daunting out of conference schedule with six of their seven games coming against opponents ranked in the top 10 of the USCHO.com Preseason Poll. "The seven non-conference games are very important and we're fortunate enough to have some great local rivals," Bolding said. "If you can take care of business in your non-conference games, it's certainly a motivator and helps you see where you're at. It also drives up the urgency of our team to not take a day off." NU will once again face No. 4 Plattsburgh State twice in a home and home series along with home dates against No. 2 R.I.T., No. 3 Middlebury, No. 10 Elmira, and Bowdoin. The Cadets will also travel to No. 6 Amherst to round out the non-conference schedule. "We couldn't ask for any better of a non-conference schedule with six ranked teams, and you'll see Bowdoin

right there on the fringe," Bolding said. "They're an excellent up and coming team that should make some noise on the national level this year." Norwich will be thrust right into the fire out of the opening gate as it hosts the 2nd annual East/West Hockey Classic again this year on Oct. 28 and 29 at Kreitzberg Arena. The Cadets, along with arch-rival Manhattanville will converge on Northfield, Vt. to face ECAC West powerhouses Elmira and R.I.T. in four pre-determined matchups. The pressure will be on the Cadets this season as every team that has won the D-III title since the NCAA started sponsoring a national championship in 2002 has repeated at least once. Elmira won the first two titles, followed by three from Middlebury and then two from Plattsburgh State and Amherst. "We've got the target on our back now, but we're looking forward to the challenge," Bolding said. "They've tasted how important it is to have everybody playing well and now we'll see how the girls respond being on top." The Cadets' title defense starts on Friday night at 7 p.m. when Norwich will raise its 2011 National Championship banner to the rafters of Kreitzberg Arena before the start of its season opener against Elmira.

Amanda Wilks - Defense 2009 Norwich University freshman women's ice hockey player Amanda Wilks was named a second team RBK AllAmerican, it was announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association on Thursday evening. Wilks becomes the first Norwich women's ice hockey player to ever receive All-America honors. The first-year defenseman tied for second on the team with 16 goals. The Winnipeg, Man., product also ranked fourth on the club in assists (17) and points (33). Wilks, who scored three game-winning goals this past season, topped the Cadets with eight power play markers. The Cadets wrapped up their record-setting 2008-09 campaign last weekend by losing a hard-fought 3-2 decision to No. 2-ranked Elmira in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. In just its second season competing at the varsity level, Norwich (19-9-1) set program records for wins (19) and

Senior forward Sophie Leclerc of the Norwich women’s ice hockey team added another accolade to her unprecedented career resume in the maroon and gold on Thursday night at the NCAA Championship banquet at the Rochester Hotel and Plaza. After leading the nation in scoring with 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points, the Barre, Vt. native was named to the RBK First Team All-American squad for the first time in her career. Leclerc became just the second NU player to ever achieve the honor as junior defenseman Amanda Wilks was named to East Second Team in 2009. Leclerc was also named the ECAC East Player of the Year after ranking second in the league with 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points. She was also the runner up for the 2011 Laura Hurd Award (D-III Player of the Year) to RIT senior forward Sarah Dagg. Leclerc enters the final weekend of her career as the alltime leader in points at NU with 70 goals and 87 points for 157 points in 110 games played. Her goal and assist totals also top the all-time team charts. Leclerc has been a pioneer in helping lay the groundwork for the Norwich women’s hockey program and its immediate tradition of excellence in just four short years as a varsity program. 2011 NCAA Division III National Champions

by Derek Dunning, NU Sports Information ROCHESTER, N.Y. - What a difference a year makes. One year ago, Norwich lost 7-2 to Amherst in the national championship game. On Saturday night, the Norwich women's ice hockey team came full circle in just its fourth year as a varsity program to win its first national championship with a 5-2 win over top-ranked RIT at the Frank Ritter Memorial Arena. Junior forward Melissa Rundlett and senior team captain Sophie Leclerc scored two goals, while Jillayne DeBus added one as well to account for all of the Cadets' offense. "That feeling that I had last year with losing to Amherst, you never forget a feeling like that, ever," Leclerc said. "All of us older guys on the team know that feeling is awful and I think we used that to our advantage since RIT had never been here and we had. For me this year was a second chance and you don't normally get a second chance so to get a second chance this year and win it all was amazing." Norwich (25-4-1) needed just 1:25 to strike first as Rundlett beat RIT goaltender Laura Chamberlain through the five-hole off an assist from Renee Lortie to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead early. DeBus added another goal just over a minute later, but it didn't come without a little bit of controversy as the initial call on the ice was no goal. Play continued for nearly a minute before the referees were able to converse with the goal judge and they ruled that the puck did indeed cross the goal line and was tucked into the upper corner before ricocheting out of the goal to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead on just two shots. On the flip side of things, RIT coach Scott McDonald said he had never seen a call initially ruled no goal on the ice and then over turned in a game he had coached before. "It's 2-0 before the game even really started it felt like," McDonald said. "A couple minutes into the

game we had already dug ourselves a big hole. It was just a hole too big that we couldn't get out of." RIT senior All-American forward Katie Stack said she couldn't quite place her finger on why the Tigers had a slow start. "I think we came out slower than normal and for whatever reason today we weren't quite ready for this game," she said. However, RIT (26-2-2) did cut the lead back to one at the 7:52 mark as Hannah Epstein put a loose puck home after a scrum in front of the net. Kylie Mazzetta and Kourtney Kunichika each picked up assists for the Tigers on Epstein's seventh goal of the season and first since Dec. 3. Rundlett gave the Cadets a two-goal lead again though at the 15:16 mark of the period when Rundlett sniped a shot top shelf short-side over the blocker of Chamberlain from the high slot to stretch the lead to 31. "Obviously it was a dream come true to just win the national championship," Rundlett said on scoring her two first-period goals. "I wasn't concerned about points or anything, I just wanted to win. I just focused on getting pucks to the net and it worked out for me." RIT battled back once again though and cut the lead to one on Kunichika's 15th goal of the season on a 5x3 power play. Kunichika was the benefactor of a text book passing play with Ariane Yokoyama feeding the puck to Tenecia Hiller to the left side of the Norwich goal. Hiller immediately sent the puck to the far post to a waiting Kunichika who slid the puck into a wide open net leaving Norwich senior goaltender Cindy Fortin no chance. "With RIT being so talented, to have a quick start was imperative just to maintain with the crowd the way it was," Bolding said. "We put the puck to the net and had a couple of good shots to create energy early. It was a seesaw battle that whole first period, we had to kill off some penalties and block some shots." After the wild five-goal first period, there was just one tally in the second period coming just over halfway through the period when Leclerc scored her 25th goal of the season and gave the Cadets a 4-2 lead.

2011 NCAA Division III National Champions Julie Fortier won a faceoff and slid the puck to Leclerc at the far post who corralled the pass and then roofed the puck top shelf past Chamberlain on the backhand for her fourth power play goal of the season with an assist from Fortier. Despite the fact the Cadets scored the lone goal, they were outplayed for a majority of the period with the Tigers holding a commanding 14-3 shot advantage. "You work so hard in that second period to get a spark going and you dominate them in play and then to come out 1-0 down in the period is tough to overcome." McDonald said. To make matters even worse, Leclerc added an insurance tally for the Cadets just 3:12 into third period off assists from Marie-Philip Guay and Brittane Michaud. That would turn out to be the final tally of the game as Norwich limited RIT’s grade "A" scoring chances in the third period and kept the pressure on to never allow the Tigers a chance to get back into the game. "In the third period Norwich did an excellent job," McDonald said. "They had that extra step and were jumping in front of every pass and picking things off. We could only generate a few shots in the third period and that's not really what you're looking for down a couple goals at the end of the game. Today Norwich played better. They were the better team." The third period of Saturday's national championship game was the exact opposite of Friday's semifinal game against Gustavus Adolphus where the Cadets had to survive a ferocious third period comeback by the Gusties and hold on for a 5-4 lead after they had a 5-1 lead after two periods of play. "We talked this morning about simple things like fore checking and back checking because we almost lost our shirt there in the semifinal game against Gustavus," Bolding said. "We did those things extremely well today all game long." Fortin concluded her Norwich career with her 50th career win by turning aside 24 RIT shots to hold the nation's top-ranked offense to just two goals after it was averaging over five goals coming into the game. "Four years ago when we look back, we would never think we would be able to win a national championship," Fortin said. "This is such a great program

with a great coaching staff. Each year we improved and coming into this season we knew would have a chance to win it all." Chamberlain and the Tigers gave up a seasonhigh five goals as the freshman goalie lost for just the second time on the year to drop to 18-2-2. She made 26 saves for the Tigers.

Kreitzberg Arena Tournament Capacity: Six visiting team rooms assure flexibility for the hosting of future tournaments. Space is also available for an additional press box area to handle increased media coverage during tournaments and special events. Home Team Accommodations: The Norwich Cadets enjoy an on-site training room, a team room, weight-training room, showers, skate sharpening and a stick customizing shop within the arena.

Refrigeration System: The best of its kind utilizing twin chillers running in tandem with four compressors for maximum response, serviceability and safety. This is far beyond the standards of most rinks in existence today. Slab Construction: Made up of granite dust aggregate from local quarries. Five miles of piping filled with coolant run underneath the slab to keep it cool at all times. Dasherboard System: Norwich was the first university in the country to install an aluminum framed cantilever dasher system. This eliminates the metal post obstructions from the spectators sight line and gets rid of those tricky bounces of the puck off the glass. Dehumidification System: This system serves to blow-dry the air for maximum efficiency.

NORWICH HOCKEY TICKET INFORMATION A limited number of reserved seats and standing-room-only tickets are sold 10 days in advance of a scheduled home game, at the following ticket outlets in Central Vermont: Chittenden Bank in Barre, Capital Plaza Hotel in Montpelier and Trans-Video Cable in Northfield. 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey National Champions - Building a tradition of Excellence

Officially opened in 1998, Kreitzberg Multipurpose Arena meets the long-standing need for a modern intercollegiate ice hockey and skating facility at Norwich. It also enhanced the recreational and athletic opportunities for all members of the Norwich community. Equally important, Kreitzberg Arena provides the University with a flexible and attractive space for cultural presentations, concerts and campus convocations. Kreitzberg Arena received plenty of use its first year with the Cadet hockey team playing a school-record 21 home games. Norwich University and Kreitzberg Arena served as the host site for the 1999, 2003 and 2004 NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey championships. This 1,400-seat arena can accommodate up to 5,000 spectators for special events. When the final phase is complete, the new energy-efficient arena will help consolidate University sports and recreational facilities into a single athletic complex, which will also include Andrews Hall and Shapiro Field House. Plans also call for improved access and parking for students and visitors to the campus. Kreitzberg Arena offers many revenue-producing opportunities that were previously closed to the University. Above all, the new arena is an exceptional recreational resource for students, faculty and staff and enhance the sense of community that is already a defining feature of the Norwich experience. Kreitzberg Arena has many special features not offered in any other Division III facility in the country. Here are some of the technical achievements.
