GEOFFREY S. MEARNS Geoffrey S. Mearns became NKU’s fifth president August 1, 2012. Prior to coming to NKU, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Cleveland State University, a public university with more than 16,000 students. Mearns became provost at CSU in February 2010. In this role, he led the most successful re-accreditation process in CSU’s history, and he cochaired a task force that developed CSU’s new budget methodologies. Mearns also spearheaded CSU’s concerted and comprehensive efforts to improve undergraduate retention and graduation rates.

Under his leadership, alumni and private giving increased substantially, and the quality and diversity of the law school’s class improved. Mearns also oversaw continual improvement in the school’s bar passage rates. Ken Bothof is entering his first year as Northern Kentucky University’s director of athletics. NKU President Geoffrey Mearns made the announcement of Bothof ’s hiring on June 26, 2013, at a press conference in The Bank of Kentucky Center. Bothof comes to NKU from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he served as athletic director since 2002. Bothof ’s tenure at Green Bay was marked by great success both on the field and in the classroom, as well as tremendous growth in support for the school’s 16 athletic programs. “This is an exciting time to be a part of this university and its athletics program, and we’re excited to welcome Ken,” Mearns said. “What he has accomplished at Green Bay is very impressive. He has positioned the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for great success both within the Horizon League and on the national stage. Our transition to Division I has gone more smoothly than we anticipated. With Ken on board, I know that our best days are ahead of us.” At Green Bay, Bothof was instrumental in raising $11 million in private funds to complete a $33 million renovation and expansion of the Phoenix Sports Center. He also developed an outdoor facilities plan that includes new soccer and softball facilities, as well as expanded recreational and intramural opportunities. Under his leadership, the Green Bay women’s basketball team has won 11 straight Horizon League titles and five NCAA Tournament first-round games; the program’s first Sweet Sixteen appearance was in 2011. Men’s basketball posted consecutive 20-win seasons and postseason appearances in 2009 and 2010, while men’s soccer, volleyball and softball each earned their first trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. During his tenure, Phoenix student-athletes have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the last 23 semesters. Green Bay is one of only two Horizon League schools to be ranked in the top 100 in the NCSA Athletic Recruiting Collegiate Power Rankings, which recognizes academic and athletic success and student-athlete graduation rates. During Bothof ’s tenure, annual contributions to the Phoenix Fund have more than tripled and membership in the fund has quadrupled. Ticket revenues and corporate sponsorships have increased dramatically, and he also negotiated a five-year contract with Nelligan Sports Marketing for the development of radio rights and corporate sponsorships. “I want to thank President Mearns and the university community for the confidence they have placed in me to lead NKU during this exciting time in the university’s history,” Bothof said. “I look forward to working through this transition. There is a great opportunity for success in the future of Division I athletics. The move to Division I is a big move. It’s a big step up, and it’s going to be challenging and exciting all at the same time.” Bothof has also served as chair of the Horizon League Finance Committee and chaired the Horizon League Executive Committee. He serves as the conference’s representative to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Executive Committee. Bothof is on the YMCA Board of Directors and is a member of the Downtown Green Bay Rotary Club. Prior to his tenure at Green Bay, he served as associate athletic director for external operations at Saint Louis University, where he oversaw marketing and promotions, fundraising, corporate sponsorships, event management and ticket sales while also supervising three sports. Bothof served as associate athletic director and then senior associate athletic director at Idaho State University from 1990-95, where he developed corporate sponsorship plans and marketing programs, served as compliance coordinator and NCAA certification coordinator, and supervised 12 sports. He began his career at San Jose State University, where he served as assistant athletic director. Bothof replaces Mike Cusack, who served as NKU’s interim athletic director since April 15, 2013. Bothof earned his bachelor of arts in education from Buena Vista University, where he competed in baseball and basketball. The Slayton, Minn., native is married to Carrie and has two children – Tyson and Kendra.

NKU Women’s Soccer 2013

NKU SOCCER STADIUM

The primary mission of NKU’s intercollegiate athletics program is to provide a natural extension of secondary school programs, offering skilled student-athletes the opportunity to continue their educational and athletic experiences beyond high school. Though NKU’s athletic teams continue to post impressive achievements in the classroom and in athletic competitions, its facilities do not match the same standards of quality. To position the university at the top of NCAA Division II, NKU has begun to implement a plan to improve and build intercollegiate athletics facilities. The first phase of the plan was completed in the Spring of 2007 when the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex opened, bringing the NKU men’s and women’s tennis teams back on campus and providing the campus community with a first-class outdoor tennis facility. On November 8, 2008, the NKU men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Louisville to open The Bank of Kentucky Center, a $68.5 million, 9,200-seat multipurpose facility that will serve the NKU athletics teams as well as the surrounding community. The next phase of the plan is now underway, as NKU opens the $6.5 million NKU Soccer Stadium adjacent to The

Bank of Kentucky Center, ending a 10-year period of Norse soccer playing off-campus in Wilder, Ky. The facility includes seating for 1,000 spectators and an artificial playing surface with World Cup dimensions (120 yards by 80 yards). Other amenities include concessions and restroom facilities, three team locker rooms, a press box and media work area, full athletic training facilities, laundry and equipment storage, and coaches’ offices. Also included in the stadium is the Founders’ Room, a VIP suite and meeting area directly over midfield that offers a great place for meetings and get-togethers on game days or anytime. The enclosed room includes an outdoor patio with excellent sightlines to the action on the field. Construction on the new NKU soccer stadium began in Fall 2008 and the NKU soccer programs took occupancy in the building in early July. The Norse soccer teams played the first games on the new field during the 2009 season against Missouri-St. Louis. The NKU Soccer Stadium officially opened on Sept. 3, 2010, as the Norse played Findlay to a scoreless draw. The Norse complied a 14-1 record in their first full season at the new facility, including hosting Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA postseason contests.

HOME OF THE NORSE

NKU Women’s Soccer 2013

BOB SHEEHAN Bob Sheehan enters his 17th year as the only women’s soccer head coach in Northern Kentucky University history. Sheehan has built the NKU women’s soccer program from scratch into one of the nation’s best, and he is 258-64-18 in those 16 seasons with the Norse. Sheehan’s teams captured an unprecedented seven Great Lakes Valley Conference championships. Last season, the first women’s soccer victory of the season in NCAA Division I belonged to NKU, as the Norse used a 2-0 win to defeat Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. NKU ended the year with back-to-back victories over South Carolina Upstate and Lipscomb to finish its inaugural Division I season 6-11 overall and 3-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The team was presented with a National Team Academic Award and Team Ethics Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America at the conclusion of the season. Two years ago, the Norse claimed a 16-2-2 record, going 12-1-1 in GLVC play and advancing to the NCAA Midwest Region championship game for the second time in three years. Sheehan and the Norse picked up their 250th all-time win with a 3-2 decision over Missouri-St. Louis in the final home game of the season. Three years ago, Sheehan led the Norse to a 17-2-2 record, including a 13-1 GLVC record. The Norse set a new standard for defense, allowing just seven goals on the year. NKU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season, falling to Wisconsin-Parkside on penalty kicks in the regional semifinals. In 2009, the Norse took the GLVC title with a 19-2-1 mark and a 13-2 record in conference play. NKU advanced to the Midwest Region final and played eventual national champion Grand Valley State to a scoreless draw before falling in penalty kicks,5-4. For the second straight season the Norse were perfect at home, running that winning streak to 20 games. In 2008, Sheehan’s Norse amassed a 16-4 record and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, advancing to the second round before being ousted by Wisconsin-Parkside, who accounted for three of NKU’s four defeats on the year. Sheehan also produced his first All-American since 2005 in Brandi Doss, who ranked second in the nation with 0.75 assists per game. In 2007, Sheehan led the Norse to a 12-6 record and their 10th consecutive trip to the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Under Sheehan’s direction the Norse captured the GLVC title in six of their first 10 seasons, including a string of five straight from 1998-2002. Seven years ago, Sheehan guided NKU to a 13-4-1 record and a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. Sheehan was named GLVC Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career in 2005, and he also earned Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors after leading NKU to its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, NKU senior forward Kristen Votapek was named to the NSCAA’s NCAA Division II All-America second team. Votapek also was named GLVC Player of the Year and earned Scholar All-America honors. In 2004, Sheehan led NKU to a 15-5-1 overall record. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth straight year and finished with a No. 21 national ranking in the Division II poll. Ten years ago, Sheehan guided the Norse to a 17-3-4 record. NKU also earned its fifth straight NCAA Division II Tournament berth and advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Norse finished with a No. 8 national ranking in the NCAA Division II poll. Eleven seasons ago, Sheehan led NKU to a 20-1-2 record and its fifth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals and spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll. Sheehan guided NKU to a 22-2 record in 2001. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four for the third straight year. During the regular season, NKU jumped to No. 1 in the national poll for the first time in history. In 2000, Sheehan led NKU to a 21-2-2 record and guided the Norse to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished as national runner-up and were ranked No. 2 nationally in the final NSCAA coaches poll. Prior to taking the NKU job, Sheehan spent 13 years as head coach at St. Ursula Academy in Cincinnati and built one of Ohio’s top prep powerhouses in girls’ soccer. Sheehan, who owned a career record of 195-48-28 at St. Ursula, won a pair of state championships (1991 and 1993), and his teams compiled a record of 106-8-13 during his last six years. A 1984 graduate of Xavier University, Sheehan was named Girls Greater Cincinnati League Gray Division Coach of the Year seven times in his career while at St. Ursula.
