Ken Bothof is entering his first year as Northern Kentucky University’s director of athletics. NKU President Geoffrey Mearns made the announcement of Bothof ’s hiring on June 26, 2013, at a press conference in The Bank of Kentucky Center. Bothof comes to NKU from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he served as athletic director since 2002. Bothof ’s tenure at Green Bay was marked by great success both on the field and in the classroom, as well as tremendous growth in support for the school’s 16 athletic programs. “This is an exciting time to be a part of this university and its athletics program, and we’re excited to welcome Ken,” Mearns said. “What he has accomplished at Green Bay is very impressive. He has positioned the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay for great success both within the Horizon League and on the national stage. Our transition to Division I has gone more smoothly than we anticipated. With Ken on board, I know that our best days are ahead of us.” At Green Bay, Bothof was instrumental in raising $11 million in private funds to complete a $33 million renovation and expansion of the Phoenix Sports Center. He also developed an outdoor facilities plan that includes new soccer and softball facilities, as well as expanded recreational and intramural opportunities.

NKU Director of Athletics

KEN BOTHOF

Under his leadership, the Green Bay women’s basketball team has won 11 straight Horizon League titles and five NCAA Tournament first-round games; the program’s first Sweet Sixteen appearance was in 2011. Men’s basketball posted consecutive 20-win seasons and postseason appearances in 2009 and 2010, while men’s soccer, volleyball and softball each earned their first trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. During his tenure, Phoenix student-athletes have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the last 23 semesters. Green Bay is one of only two Horizon League schools to be ranked in the top 100 in the NCSA Athletic Recruiting Collegiate Power Rankings, which recognizes academic and athletic success and student-athlete graduation rates. During Bothof ’s tenure, annual contributions to the Phoenix Fund have more than tripled and membership in the fund has quadrupled. Ticket revenues and corporate sponsorships have increased dramatically, and he also negotiated a five-year contract with Nelligan Sports Marketing for the development of radio rights and corporate sponsorships. “I want to thank President Mearns and the university community for the confidence they have placed in me to lead NKU during this exciting time in the university’s history,” Bothof said. “I look forward to working through this transition. There is a great opportunity for success in the future of Division I athletics. The move to Division I is a big move. It’s a big step up, and it’s going to be challenging and exciting all at the same time.” Bothof has also served as chair of the Horizon League Finance Committee and chaired the Horizon League Executive Committee. He serves as the conference’s representative to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Executive Committee. Bothof is on the YMCA Board of Directors and is a member of the Downtown Green Bay Rotary Club. Prior to his tenure at Green Bay, he served as associate athletic director for external operations at Saint Louis University, where he oversaw marketing and promotions, fundraising, corporate sponsorships, event management and ticket sales while also supervising three sports. Bothof served as associate athletic director and then senior associate athletic director at Idaho State University from 1990-95, where he developed corporate sponsorship plans and marketing programs, served as compliance coordinator and NCAA certification coordinator, and supervised 12 sports. He began his career at San Jose State University, where he served as assistant athletic director. Bothof replaces Mike Cusack, who served as NKU’s interim athletic director since April 15, 2013. Bothof earned his bachelor of arts in education from Buena Vista University, where he competed in baseball and basketball. The Slayton, Minn., native is married to Carrie and has two children – Tyson and Kendra.

NKU Head Coach

TODD ASALON Todd Asalon is entering his 14th season as the baseball head coach at Northern Kentucky University. Asalon owns a 442-319-1 record in 13 years as the Norse head coach and led NKU to the NCAA Division II Tournament eight times. During his tenure, 10 players, including nine pitchers, have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Dave Middendorf (22nd round, Royals) was selected in the 2011 MLB Draft. Middendorf was named to the first-team All-American honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last season for the Norse, while also capturing Pitcher of the Year honors for both the Great Lakes Valley Conference and Midwest Region. Last season, NKU finished its final season competing at the NCAA Division II level 36-22 overall and 25-11 in the GLVC. The 2012 season saw the Norse win 16 games in a row between March 18 and April 7. NKU ended the season in second place in the GLVC East division and advanced to the second round of the Midwest Regional Tournament. In 2011, NKU advanced once again to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament after finishing the season with a 36-21 record under Asalon’s direction. The 21-13 conference record landed the team in second place in the GLVC East division. Three years ago, Asalon returned to the NCAA Tournament on the heels of a 43-17 season and topped the GLVC East division for the second consecutive season with a 24-6 league record. The Norse saw several offensive records broken, both individually and at the team level, and led the nation in doubles and doubles per game. Asalon earned his first back-to-back GLVC championships as the Norse finished 41-22, earning Asalon his third GLVC Coach of the Year award for the 2009 season. The five conference championships over the eight-year span are equaled only by ABCA Hall of Fame coach Irish O’Reilly, who accomplished the feat while coaching Lewis between 1985 and 1992. Additionally, Asalon’s squad led the GLVC in both team hitting and team pitching on the season while 11 players earned All-GLVC honors, including GLVC Player of the Year Evan McDole. In 2008, Asalon led the Norse to a 38-24 record and their fourth Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the previous seven years. The Norse did so in dramatic fashion, losing in the opening game of the GLVC tournament before rallying back to victory. Asalon was the first coach in GLVC history to amass four titles so quickly into his tenure and only the second coach in GLVC history to accumulate four conference titles such a short span. In 2007, the Norse finished 27-26. The Norse challenged themselves early, taking on the previous three national champions – Delta State, Florida Southern and Tampa – in the first three weeks of the season. Asalon guided NKU to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in 2006 and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished 42-20-1 overall, 3611-1 in the GLVC. The 42 wins are the most for NKU since 1989, when the Norse finished 45-9. Seven years ago, Asalon led NKU to a 31-26 record. It marked the fourth time in five years that Asalon led the Norse to at least 30 victories. In 2004, Asalon guided NKU to a 37-25 record and its second Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in three years. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and featured GLVC Pitcher of the Year Derrik Moeves, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005. In 2002, Asalon led NKU to a 37-24 record and guided the Norse to their first-ever GLVC Tournament championship. Asalon was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 2002, and he guided the Norse to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1990. Asalon, who spent six years as the baseball head coach at Thomas More College prior to taking the NKU position in 2000, is a 1994 graduate of NKU. Asalon played baseball for the Norse from 1980-83, and he was a three-year starter at catcher. Asalon earned AllRegion honors in 1981 and served as team captain in both 1982 and ‘83. He later was an assistant baseball coach for the Norse from 1991-94, before taking the Thomas More coaching job in 1994. Asalon led Thomas More to a school-record 32 victories in 2000 and its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. He was named Association of Mideast Colleges Conference Coach of the Year in 1995. In addition to being the baseball coach, Asalon also served as Thomas More’s athletic director for two years.

Dizzy Peyton Assistant Coach

Dizzy Peyton returns for his seventh year as a full-time assistant coach after serving for two seasons as a volunteer assistant. Peyton will be responsible for the development of the Norse pitching staff. Peyton coached the Quincy Gems of the Central Illinois Collegiate League during the summer of 2007. Since joining the NKU staff in 2005, Peyton has sent ten pitchers into the professional ranks, including four by way of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In 2006, his pitching staff picked up a GLVC-best 41 wins and struck out a league-high 122 batters looking out of 399 total strikeouts en route to a GLVC championship and an appearance in the NCAA North Central Regional.

NKU Baseball 2014

COACHING STAFF

Peyton played one season with the Norse in 2003. He maintained a 3-3 record with a 4.44 earned run average, striking out 44 batters while walking just 20. Post-season Tommy John surgery ended Peyton’s playing career after just one season.

Kent Shartzer Assistant Coach

Kent Shartzer has been an assistant coach for the baseball team at NKU since 2010. He primarily works with the infielders and acts as the hitting coach. Shartzer earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bellarmine University in 2005. He coached at Holy Cross High School in Louisville, Ky. in 2006 before returning to his alma mater in 2007. He helped coach the Knight’s baseball team for two seasons. Shartzer resides in Williamsburg, Ohio, with his wife, Allie, and daughter, Stevi.

Tim Clark Volunteer Assistant Coach

Tim Clark begins his first season as a member of the Norse coaching staff and will serve as a volunteer assistant. He will add support for the NKU pitching staff along with assistant coach Dizzy Peyton. Last season, Clark helped lead NKU through its first season competing at the NCAA Division I level. He completed his final season with the Norse during the 2013 season and recorded a 4.27 career earned run average and recorded two complete games and 76 strikeouts during his three-year career. During his senior season, Clark led the Norse pitching staff with a 4.29 ERA over 14 appearances and 35 2/3 innings of work on the mound. On April 24, Clark pitched into the eighth inning against Butler and struck out a season-high six batters while allowing just two runs on three hits.

Bill Aker Baseball Complex receives upgrades

Nov. 20, 2012 HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - When the Northern Kentucky University baseball team takes the field for its home opener against Morehead State on March 26, the Bill Aker Baseball Complex will have a different look. Norse fans will see two noticeable changes to both in the infield and outfield this season as the Norse embark on their inaugural season as an NCAA Division I program and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The grass and dirt in the infield have been dug out and will be replaced with a synthetic artificial turf playing field. The only dirt that will remain will be the pitching mound. The outfield will continue to be natural grass. The addition of the turf will benefit the team during practice and the regular season. When rain threatens, teams will not have to worry about long delays and rainouts due to the condition of the infield. "During the season, if it pours down rain, we will come off the field, obviously," associate athletic director of operations and event management Chris Hafling said, "but we can go right back out and avoid massive rain delays, which is an advantage over the natural infield we used to have." Additionally, the Norse will be able to practice on the field in certain conditions when they would not have been on the natural grass and dirt. "Being the northern-most school in the Atlantic Sun, we are at a little bit of a disadvantage in regards to the weather. Even in the dead of winter, if the ground is frozen and hard as a rock, they will still be able to get out on the turf," Hafling said. "That will be a big benefit to the team because they will be able to be on their field more." Previously, the team has been forced indoors to practice in Regents Hall or on the turf at the NKU Soccer Stadium when the field was not in shape for practicing. "Our on-field practice time before and during the season will be increased immensely," NKU head coach Todd Asalon said. "Since we don't have a true on-campus indoor facility, there will be days that we can get outside on the turf as opposed to going to the soccer field." The infield is not the only part of the Bill Aker Baseball Complex to see changes. The old outfield fence has also been removed and a new one will be installed, which will push the field out a little further than it has been in the past and provide more security to the complex, according to Hafling. New foul poles will also be added as the fence in put into place. The new turf and fence are the visible changes fans will see when they visit NKU for the 2013 season, but there is one change they will not be able to see. A new drainage system is also being added in both the infield and outfield. Previously known as Friendship Field, the baseball complex was renamed in honor of Bill Aker, the founder of the baseball program, in 2001. Aker led the team from its beginning in 1971 until he retired in 2000 and compiled an 807-572-1 record. He will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 4, 2013. 22 • NKU Baseball (@NKU_Baseball on Twitter)

2013 HIGHLIGHTS

Conor Ledger

Feb. 22, 2013 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Northern Kentucky University capitalized on three costly errors by Saint Louis to earn a 5-3 victory in extra innings on Friday afternoon. It marked NKU's first victory as an NCAA Division I program, and the Norse improved to 1-4 on the season. After the Billikens jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning, the Norse climbed back into the game with a run in the fifth inning. An error by Alec Sole allowed Josh Myers to reach base and Pat Hyde to score, cutting the Saint Louis advantage to 3-1. NKU followed that with a two-run sixth inning to tie the game. Zac Asman got the offense going when he reached on Sole's second error of the game. Conor Ledger, playing in his first collegiate game, reached base on a fielder's choice that saw Asman getting out on the play. Cody Kuzniczci singled to right field to advance Ledger to second, and Hyde followed with a double to bring home Ledger and Kuzniczci to even the score. Over the next seven scoreless innings, both teams had chances to take the lead or win the ballgame. Saint Louis left eight runners on base over the final eight innings, while NKU stranded five. The Norse offense came alive in the top of the 14th inning. Myers singled to right field with one out, and proceeded to steal second base. Brad Clement followed with a single to left field, advancing Myers to third. With Ryan Hinz at the plate, signals were mixed up and Myers attempted to come home. Myers slipped trying to return to back to third base and appeared to be trapped. Braxton Martinez lost control of the ball, and Myers came home to give NKU its first lead of the game. After Hinz struck out, Asman drew a walk. Asman advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Clement advanced to third. Ledger singled up the middle to bring Clement home and seal the victory for the Norse. Saint Louis was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning. The Billikens' best chance to earn the victory came in the bottom of the 12th inning. Saint Louis had two runners on base with one out, but NKU held on to extend the game. Hyde went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two doubles and a run scored for NKU. Brett Loeding earned his first victory of the season after pitching 6 2/3 innings of relief. He did not allow a run and scattered five hits. Follow NKU Athletics on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest!
