UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW There’s something special happening at Northern Kentucky University. The youngest of Kentucky’s eight public colleges and universities, NKU has matured into a prominent metropolitan institution serving more than 15,000 associate, undergraduate, graduate, professional, and doctoral students from across the nation and around the world. As the university approaches its 50th anniversary in 2018, the Norse spirit has never been stronger. Our students embrace the self-determination and work ethic that makes this a special place, and our alumni take pride in the impact they make both on our campus and in their community. This year, the university community worked together to develop a five-year strategic plan to guide us to our semicentennial. The plan infuses innovation throughout NKU’s programs and services. We’re breaking down barriers between colleges and majors in a way that ensures we continue to graduate leaders capable of making immediate contributions to their organizations, the region, and the commonwealth. We prepare students for a life of leadership and service, increasing their opportunities to attain financial security and life fulfillment while reducing the likelihood of burdensome student debt. Each new incoming freshman class is more prepared than the one before, and with a heightened focus on student success in the strategic plan, graduation and retention rates are also on the rise. Our students choose NKU because of the innovative academic programs within each of its six colleges – the College of Arts and Sciences, Haile/US Bank College of Business, College of Education and Human Services, College of Health Professions, College of Informatics, and Chase College of Law. They’re also drawn to our close-knit campus and to the personal attention they receive from caring faculty-mentors. State colleges and universities like NKU embrace a student focus that emphasizes learning and teaching. That’s why our small classrooms were designed for lively discussions within a comfortable learning atmosphere.

ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

NORTHERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS is an NCAA Division I program with membership in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Following a storied history as a DII program that included 72 conference titles, 25 regional championships and three national championships, NKU made the move to DI prior to the start of the 2012-13 campaign. Since making the move to DI, NKU has continued its winning ways. The Norse will be eligible to send their programs to all A-Sun Championships for the first time this season. MISSION The mission of NKU Athletics is to advance the University’s vision while focusing on the well-being of our studentathletes as we prepare and empower each of them for academic and competitive success at NKU and beyond. We are committed to serving and engaging the University and local community while preserving and establishing meaningful and enduring relationships with alumni, friends and fans. We will do so with uncompromising integrity and sportsmanship, exceeding the guidance provided by the National Collegiate Athletics Association and Atlantic Sun Conference. VISION NKU Athletics will embody comprehensive excellence. We will adhere to and excel in each of our core values while fostering an environment that promotes continuous learning, engagement, and fiscal responsibility.

PRES ID ENT

GEOFFREY MEARNS

Geoffrey S. Mearns became NKU’s fifth president on August 1, 2012. Prior to coming to NKU, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Cleveland State University, a public university with more than 16,000 students. He became provost in February 2010. In this role, he oversaw eight academic deans and five vice provosts. He supervised various academic support functions such as the library; student advising and student services; and faculty recruitment, reappointment, promotion and tenure. Prior to becoming provost, he spent four and a half years as dean and professor of law at Cleveland State’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. During his tenure as dean, he was actively engaged in fundraising for the college, helping to enhance its scholarship pool and overseeing an $8.8 million renovation of the law building. Under his leadership, alumni and private giving increased substantially, and the quality and diversity of the law school’s class improved. Mearns also oversaw continual improvement in the school’s bar passage rates. At Cleveland-Marshall, Mearns taught complex federal criminal investigations and prosecutions, criminal law, and white collar crime. He previously taught at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and New York Law School. Prior to joining Cleveland State, Mearns was a practicing lawyer for more than 15 years, including serving as a federal prosecutor in the United States Department of Justice. His record of community service includes serving on several judicial screening committees and serving as a trustee for several Cleveland non-profit agencies. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Yale University in 1981 and a juris doctor from the University of Virginia in 1987. After graduating from law school, he clerked for the Hon. Boyce F. Martin, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Louisville. Mearns and his wife, Jennifer, have five children.

KEN BOTHOF

On June 26, 2013, Northern Kentucky University unvieled Ken Bothof as the new Director of Athletics. Ken Bothof took over for interim director of athletics Mike Cusack on August 19, 2013. Bothof comes to NKU from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he has served as athletic director since 2002. Bothof’s tenure at Green Bay has been marked by great success both on the field and in the classroom, as well as tremendous growth in support for the school’s 16 athletic programs. Under his leadership, the Green Bay women’s basketball team has won 11 straight Horizon League titles and five NCAA Tournament first-round games; the program’s first Sweet Sixteen appearance was in 2011. Men’s basketball posted consecutive 20-win seasons and postseason appearances in 2009 and 2010, while men’s soccer, volleyball and softball each earned their first trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. During his tenure, Phoenix student-athletes have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the last 23 semesters. Green Bay is one of only two Horizon League schools to be ranked in the top 100 in the NCSA Athletic Recruiting Collegiate Power Rankings, which recognizes academic and athletic success and student-athlete graduation rates. Prior to his tenure at Green Bay, he served as associate athletic director for external operations at Saint Louis University, where he oversaw marketing and promotions, fundraising, corporate sponsorships, event management and ticket sales while also supervising three sports. Bothof served as associate athletic director and then senior associate athletic director at Idaho State University from 1990-95, where he developed corporate sponsorship plans and marketing programs, served as compliance coordinator and NCAA certification coordinator, and supervised 12 sports. He began his career at San Jose State University, where he served as assistant athletic director. The NKU athletics department is set to begin its third year at the NCAA Division I level. A member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, NKU sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports – baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field and volleyball. As impressive as any of the on-field success, however, was the fact that NKU student athletes posted a grade point average of 3.05 in the fall of 2013 and 3.03 in the spring 2014. In fact, the school’s student athletes have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater during six of the last seven semesters. NKU Athletics also launched a $6 million Go Gold fundraising campaign last year, and has raised nearly $3 million toward that goal. Bothof earned his bachelor of arts in education from Buena Vista University, where he competed in baseball and basketball. The Slayton, Minn., native is married to Carrie and has two children – Tyson and Kendra.

FACILITIES The primary mission of NKU’S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS PROGRAM is to advance the University’s vision and prepare and empower its student-athletes for both academic and competitive success, while serving and engaging the University and local community. One way to accomplish each of those elements is through top-notch facilities. Since 2007, NKU has worked to significantly improve its facilities that service its athletic programs and the surrounding community. On Nov. 8, 2008, the NKU men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Louisville to open The Bank of Kentucky Center, a $68.5 million, 9,200-seat multipurpose facility that will continue to serve the NKU athletics teams as well as the surrounding community. The facility houses a training room for NKU’s sports medicine team, weight room, study lab and film-study room. In addition to hosting Norse men’s and women’s basketball games, the venue also serves as host to concerts, plays and other sporting events. Acts such as Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Larry the Cable Guy and Cirque du Soleil have held events at the facility. In the spring of 2007, the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex opened, bringing the NKU men’s and women’s tennis teams back on campus and providing the campus community with a first-class outdoor tennis facility. NKU opened the $6.5 million NKU Soccer Stadium adjacent to The Bank of Kentucky Center, ending a 10-year period of Norse soccer playing off-campus in Wilder, Ky. The NKU Soccer Stadium officially opened on Sept. 3, 2010, as the NKU women’s soccer team played Findlay to a scoreless tie before the men’s team cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Oilers. The women’s team complied a 10-1-1 record in their first full season at the new facility and have posted a 24-9-4 overall record on their home field. The Northern Kentucky volleyball team plays its home contests in Regents Hall, which was officially dedicate on Oct. 29, 1972. Just the second building completed on NKU’s Highland Heights campus, Regents seats roughly 1,800 spectators. It also houses locker rooms for Norse baseball, softball, tennis and cross country/track & field. Baseball competes at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex at Friendship Field, which sits adjacent to Regents Hall and the Albright Health Center, which houses the student activities center. The baseball complex features a turfed infield and natural grass outfield in the 300-seat venue. The Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field serves as home to the Norse softball program. The 300-seat facility sits adjacent to both the Bill Aker Baseball Complex and Joyce E. Yeager Tennis Complex
