QUICK FACTS

NKU Head Baseball Coach

TODD ASALON Todd Asalon is entering his 13th season as the baseball head coach at Northern Kentucky University. Asalon owns a 434-272-1 record in 12 years as the Norse head coach and has led NKU to the NCAA Division II Tournament eight times. During his tenure, 10 players, including nine pitchers, have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Dave Middendorf (22nd round, Royals) was selected in the 2011 MLB Draft. Middendorf was named to the first-team All-American honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last season for the Norse, while also capturing Pitcher of the Year honors for both the Great Lakes Valley Conference and Midwest Region. Last season, NKU finished its final season competing at the NCAA Division II level 36-22 overall and 25-11 in the GLVC. The 2012 season saw the Norse win 16 games in a row between March 18 and April 7. NKU ended the season in second place in the GLVC East division and advanced to the second round of the Midwest Regional Tournament. In 2011, NKU advanced once again to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament after finishing the season with a 36-21 record under Asalon’s direction. The 21-13 conference record landed the team in second place in the GLVC East division. Three years ago, Asalon returned to the NCAA Tournament on the heels of a 43-17 season and topped the GLVC East division for the second consecutive season with a 24-6 league record. The Norse saw several offensive records broken, both individually and at the team level, and led the nation in doubles and doubles per game. Asalon earned his first back-to-back GLVC championships as the Norse finished 41-22, earning Asalon his third GLVC Coach of the Year award for the 2009 season. The five conference championships over the eight-year span are equaled only by ABCA Hall of Fame coach Irish O’Reilly, who accomplished the feat while coaching Lewis between 1985 and 1992. Additionally, Asalon’s squad led the GLVC in both team hitting and team pitching on the season while 11 players earned All-GLVC honors, including GLVC Player of the Year Evan McDole. In 2008, Asalon led the Norse to a 38-24 record and their fourth Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the previous seven years. The Norse did so in dramatic fashion, losing in the opening game of the GLVC tournament before rallying back to victory. Asalon was the first coach in GLVC history to amass four titles so quickly into his tenure and only the second coach in GLVC history to accumulate four conference titles such a short span. In 2007, the Norse finished 27-26. The Norse challenged themselves early, taking on the previous three national champions – Delta State, Florida Southern and Tampa – in the first three weeks of the season. Asalon guided NKU to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in 2006 and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished 42-20-1 overall, 3611-1 in the GLVC. The 42 wins are the most for NKU since 1989, when the Norse finished 45-9. Seven years ago, Asalon led NKU to a 31-26 record. It marked the fourth time in five years that Asalon led the Norse to at least 30 victories. In 2004, Asalon guided NKU to a 37-25 record and its second Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in three years. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and featured GLVC Pitcher of the Year Derrik Moeves, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005. In 2002, Asalon led NKU to a 37-24 record and guided the Norse to their first-ever GLVC Tournament championship. Asalon was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 2002, and he guided the Norse to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1990. Asalon, who spent six years as the baseball head coach at Thomas More College prior to taking the NKU position in 2000, is a 1994 graduate of NKU. Asalon played baseball for the Norse from 1980-83, and he was a three-year starter at catcher. Asalon earned AllRegion honors in 1981 and served as team captain in both 1982 and ‘83. He later was an assistant baseball coach for the Norse from 1991-94, before taking the Thomas More coaching job in 1994. Asalon led Thomas More to a school-record 32 victories in 2000 and its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. He was named Association of Mideast Colleges Conference Coach of the Year in 1995. In addition to being the baseball coach, Asalon also served as Thomas More’s athletic director for two years.

MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS 5, NKU 3

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Northern Kentucky University dropped a 5-3 decision to Missouri-St. Louis in the third round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Saturday, setting up a Sunday showdown between the same two teams for a berth in the championship game. Trevor Nathanson and Joel Ayala knocked in two runs apiece to spark Missouri-St. Louis, which improved to 3220 and staved off elimination. The Tritons built an early 3-0 lead and rode the pitching of starter Austin Schuler (seven innings, three hits and three runs) to force another game with NKU on Sunday. NKU (34-19) trailed 5-1 going into the eighth inning, but a two-run single by Brad Clement cut the Missouri-St. Louis lead to 5-3. The Tritons, though, held on and defeated NKU for the first time in four attempts this season. NKU 6, MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS 4 NO. 17 INDIANAPOLIS 4, NKU 3

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Great Lakes Valley Conference era officially ended for Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon, and the Norse baseball team nearly brought back a championship trophy as a going-away gift. Indianapolis, however, pulled out a 4-3 victory over NKU in the GLVC Tournament championship game to deny the Norse their sixth league crown. Having announced it will reclassify to Division I status next season and join the Atlantic Sun Conference, NKU was looking to add the 2012 GLVC Tournament championship to the other five (2002, ‘04, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09) in the baseball program’s trophy case. But Indianapolis stood in the way. The top-seeded Greyhounds (42-14) survived a furious eighth-inning NKU rally to claim the championship and keep alive their hopes of being the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. NKU, now 35-20, is expected to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament when the pairings are announced Sunday night. The Norse trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, but loaded the bases with none out. Brad Clement drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the Indianapolis lead to 4-2. After a wild pitch advanced runners to second and third, Phil Smith’s grounder to second knocked in Bradley Vanderglas to make it a 4-3 game. Indianapolis reliever Donovan Drake then struck out Pat Williams to strand Max Colaner at third base. In the bottom of the ninth, Drake retired NKU in order to seal the victory for Indianapolis. Earlier in the day, the Norse posted a 6-4 win against Missouri-St. Louis to reach the championship game. Williams hit a 3-run homer to spark the NKU offense.

NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL NKU 6, WAYNE STATE (MICH.) 4

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Max Colaner had three hits and Pat Williams scored a pair of runs to lead the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to a 6-4 victory over Wayne State (Mich.) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament. NKU (36-20) advances in the winners bracket to play the winner between Grand Valley State and Rockhurst tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Norse amassed 10 hits in the contest. Brett Wagner (3-0) got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Brett Loeding closed out the game’s final 4.2 innings to earn his 12th save. The junior reliever, having already set the NKU record for appearances in a season, needs seven innings of work to surpass Dave Middendorf for NKU’s single-season record for innings pitched (109.1 in 2011). Josh Wedesky suffered the loss and fell to 6-4 on the season after surrendering five runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings. Ethan Vasiliauskas fanned five Norse in 6.1 innings of relief. Zimmerman and Kasey Koster each had two of WSU’s nine hits, all singles. Wayne State (34-20) will play an elimination game tomorrow against Indianapolis. Colaner led off the hit parade with a single for the Norse in the top of the first inning. Brad Clement followed with a single of his own before Phil Smith slapped his team-leading 17th double of the year down the left field line to plate Colaner before the Warriors could record an out. Kris Hecktor added an RBI single in the first and sent NKU starting pitcher Cody Cooper to the mound with a 2-0 lead before ever throwing a pitch. The Norse took advantage of two Warrior errors to plate three runs in the third inning and extend the lead to 5-0. Back-to-back singles by Williams and Zac Asman put runners on the corners before Kris Hecktor rolled a grounder to WSU first baseman Kyle Zimmerman, who’s throw to Andrew Ciennik covering at the bag hit Hecktor and got away, allowing Williams to score. Wayne State clawed back into the game with four runs in the fourth inning off Cooper. The Norse got an insurance run in the seventh inning with some small ball after Williams was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch got him to third for Hecktor, who lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in his 21st run of the season.

ROCKHURST 6, NKU 1

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Sean Carter had three hits and scored two runs and Josh Samuelson drove in a pair as Rockhurst University sent the Northern Kentucky University baseball team into the elimination bracket with a 6-1 win at the NCAA Midwest Regional. NKU (36-21) will take on Grand Valley State in an elimination contest on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The winner of that match up will move on to play the loser of Saturday’s early game between Indianapolis and Rockhurst. The Hawks (34-17) had eight hits on the game, including a pair of doubles from Carter. Bradley Vanderglas had two of NKU’s four hits on the game, while Phil Smith added a double, his team-leading 18th of the season. The loss fell to NKU starter Tim Clark (4-4), who went just 1.2 innings and surrendered two runs on two hits. Mark Himmelberg (8-2) got the win, striking out six while allowing just an unearned run on four hits over seven innings of work. After a scoreless first, the Hawks got on the board in the second inning after Josh Samuelson’s first hit of the day to drive in Carter, who doubled to start the rally. Back-to-back walks from Clark forced in another run and spelled the end of the day for the junior. Derrick Jones added a run in the third on an RBI groundout to score Ryan Porter. The Hawks added insurance runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings as well. NKU’s only run came in the bottom of the eighth without benefit of a hit, as a pair of Rockhurst errors allowed Pat Williams to cross the plate. The Norse will look to avenge a 9-0 loss to Grand Valley State in last year’s Midwest Regional that knocked NKU into the elimination bracket.
