February 2017 marked the opening of an important new exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, highlighting the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066. The exhibit has been extended through December 2018 with new title of “Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II.” Join Nikkei Horizons in September for a guided tour of Washington, DC. Vashon Island was home to a significant Japanese American population and we will visit the Mukai House and Garden, learning about the early immigrant and agricultural experience through the preservation of this property with a docent tour. Lunch will be on your own at a Vashon Island eatery. Following lunch, you will enjoy a docent led tour at the Vashon Heritage Museum, which is currently exhibiting 悲喜

こもごも (Hikikomogomo) or Joy and Heartache, which tells the story of Japanese Americans on Vashon through the decades. TWO-GARDEN TOUR IN SOUTHWEST SEATTLE (VICINITY) Highline Sea-Tac Botanical Garden is a hidden gem just north of the Sea-Tac Airport, and includes the Seike Japanese Garden, recreated from the memorial at the Seike’s Des Moines Nursery, which was closed to make way for the 3rd runway. The original commemorated family member, Toll, who gave his life during WWII as a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Lunch will be on your own at the Culinary Art program dining facility at South Seattle College Campus or TBD in West Seattle. Then, visit the Seattle Chinese Garden on a docent-led tour at the north end of the campus, with its white-walled, Knowing the Spring Courtyard, the Song Mei Pavilion and viewpoints of the city. WALKING POLES FOR BALANCE AND MOBILITY Proper use of walking poles gives you a boost with every step. Build core strength and burn 40% more calories compared with just going for a walk! LIVING INDEPENDENTLY AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE 2018 Attend this two-day classroom workshop and become a better, safer driver and reduce your risk of an accident. Learn about new vehicle safety features. Course participants over the age of 55 will receive a multi-year discount on their auto insurance premiums. Two driver households may need both drivers to attend to get the maximum discount. Pre Course Assignment: Review your auto insurance policy. CHAIR YOGA This Chair Yoga class which is designed for seniors, and physically challenged is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair, or standing using a chair for support. YOGA FOR HEALTHY AGING Throughout the quarter we will practice Yoga for Strength, Flexibility, Balance and Agility; important physical skills for staying healthy and independent as we age. We will use these skills to cultivate cardiovascular health, brain health and reduce chronic stress. All classes will consist of Asana (yoga poses), Pranayama (breath practices) and Meditation. Nikkei Horizons has four ukulele bands- Kimochi, Niko Niko, Na Aikane and Hana Ho, focusing on improving playing skills in a warm, fun, and nurturing atmosphere.
