The right health & wellness options As you look forward to retirement, you want to age gracefully and feel young at heart (if not-so-young in body). Big and difficult decisions about your parents’ wellbeing can hit you all at once, and you don’t have the luxury of time to thoroughly research all of the options. Maybe you could use some help, a support system to enhance your lifestyle on your health & wellness journey. Let Keiro Northwest be your guide. My mom is suffering from dementia, and I am unable to take care of her needs. The doctor says she doesn’t meet “medical necessity requirements” for skilled nursing. Your mom can still thrive and be happy at home, even with dementia. With assistance from Keiro Northwest’s Home Care program, she can be safe, and you Ooey gooey pizza is the best with Nikkei Horizons Lunch Bunch friends

Dear friends and family, I hope all of you are enjoying the holiday season as we approach the time to flip the calendar to 2017!!! We have had quite a ride with election turmoil and uncertainties in the market… regardless of politics. This kind of uncertainty makes me think about those of us nearing retirement age. Are we ready for the next chapter in our lives? We do have some control over our own destiny. How do we want our healthcare needs serviced? What type of services will we want or need? Keiro Northwest can help you with your health & wellness questions. In fact, if you stop by our 5-star facility, Keiro Northwest Rehabilitation & Care Center, you can discuss your needs and concerns with our friendly staff who can help identify your next steps. As we prepare to turn the calendar to 2017 I urge you to think of the future and support Keiro Northwest as we care for the Asian community. The first annual Lunar New Year Celebration takes place on February 24, 2017. Please save the date and join in the inaugural fun!! Wishing you and yours a safe and happy holiday season!

Sincerely,

Brenda Handley Board President

Dear Keiro Northwest Family, It wasn’t too long ago that the notion of retirement was a distant reality for me… today, I belong to AARP, eat healthier, and accept that my mind says “yes” when my body says “no.” I am much more appreciative and nostalgic about being a parent, and financial planning goes beyond budgeting for this year’s Christmas presents! As we age and evolve as individuals, our priorities and life circumstances change… at Keiro Northwest (KNW), we also experience evolution based on: VV The “Baby Boomer” generation soon becoming the primary customer of senior health care (10,000 turned 65 every day since 2011!) VV Asians as the fastest growing elderly population in King County VV Technology that transforms healthcare at all levels VV Healthcare reform and other policies that radically and quickly change service delivery and business models KNW incorporates these environmental changes by reorienting our services and programs to support your health, wellness, and lifestyle journey… to be a trusted partner as you prepare for, enter, and enjoy retirement. Please share your thoughts and ideas on the support you need… for you have been and continue to be our top priority! We extend our deepest appreciation for your tremendous support throughout 2016 and wish each and every one of you and your families the most joyous and wonderful Holiday Season. We hope to see you at our 1st Annual Lunar New Year Celebration!

Your CEO,

Jeffrey

Resident Spotlight – Antonio Mingaracal Soft-spoken Antonio Mingaracal has dreams. He wants to play with his grandkids, attend a Seahawks game, travel to the Philippines, and try some casino therapy at Tulalip “University.” After his stroke and resulting paralysis, those dreams seemed impossible. Keiro Northwest’s Rehab changed all of that, and he knows his dreams can come true. In his previous skilled facility, Antonio was stuck in bed for months, with little improvement and no true physical therapy. After only a month of Keiro rehab and care, he was out of bed, diligently working with his therapy team to get better. What did it take? He cycled on the stationary bike and took self-propelled wheelchair laps around the gym. Strengthening electrical stimulation therapy helped him with transfers from his wheelchair to bed or car. Intense parallel bar walks and a support brace improved his standing and walking. Antonio loved rehab. He believes that the staff are the best. Gentle and energized, they spoke to him in both English and his native Ilocano, which helped him understand and feel included in his recovery. They customized his rehab and cheered him on. He was happy with the nursing staff, too. Antonio’s close-knit family is thrilled with his progress. Now that he can transfer from his wheelchair into the car (with some help from his sons), it opens up possibilities. Antonio’s previous facility was closer to home, but the additional distance was worth the quality of care that Antonio received at Keiro. They see results, and that matters. Antonio went triumphantly home. He will continue his recuperation with in-home therapy and looks forward to getting back to his old self. After all, he needs to be 100% to take on his beloved grandkids!

Playing the front nine 15th Annual Founders’ Golf Benefit This year’s front nine, back nine, and after-party made the golf benefit a great event for golfers and non-golfers alike. Great golf, combined with good eats and activities, helped raise over $128,000! Many thanks to our golfers, guests, sponsors, volunteers, and donors whose participation adds fun and uniqueness to the event. Our kudos and appreciation go to event co-chairs Debbie Nagasawa and Jay Deguchi, and the Golf Committee. Their joint genius and unflagging work planned and carried out this huge event. They have big ideas to improve and grow this event, so stay tuned!

Competition was fierce, but Team Kessler (Steve Byers, Captain Greg Kessler, Scott Sullivan, and Paul Giralmo) won the honor of Grand Champions, with a score of 57. Scott Sullivan’s hole-in-one on Hole 5 helped make that happen. Their names will forever grace the perpetual golf trophy, and gold medals added to the glory.

29 luscious desserts tempted, teased, and tested the commitment of the golfers and partygoers for the evening’s Dessert Dash. Tables bid on dreamy concoctions from popular bakeries and homemade masterpieces, with top bids in the hundreds! Guests charged the dessert tables, filled with eagerness, but knowing that any dessert would be worth the effort. Our coveted Domo Arigato Award honored two companies close to our hearts, Bainbridge Island ACE Hardware (Community Award, Steve Mikami pictured here) and Consonus Healthcare (Corporate Award). The people behind these companies have been vital to Keiro Northwest’s growth and success.

Despite soaring temps in the 90s, 38 foursomes took to the greens at Fairwood Golf & Country Club for a fun day of golf. They prepared for every situation with mulligans, raffle tickets, Keiro Northwest cooling towels, and water bottles. The drive to win motivated some teams, while others were out to have fun.

Activities and goodies at 17 of the holes made the Founder’s Benefit unique and special. Waiting for play to continue was fun and pleasant thanks to KP, Long Drive, and Hole-in-One contests; whiskey, sake, and beer tastings; mochi ice cream, Pink’s ice cream, Golden Peacock Garlic Chicken Wings, Keiro Northwest Catering riblets, and lots of other snacks and plentiful beverages.

Almost 90 volunteers powered the event with their helping hands, bright smiles, and keen eyesight. Easy to spot in their bright red visors (on course) or t-shirts (at the party), we loved their enthusiasm and dedication.
