Sports legends, a big rooster, and community at the 1st Annual Lunar New Year Celebration No black tie or ball gowns for this fundraiser. Instead, team jerseys, scarves, and jackets reigned supreme as guests mingled with sports legends and raised $200,000 at the inaugural Keiro Northwest Lunar New Year Celebration. The Westin Bellevue buzzed with anticipation over beautiful artwork, luxury vacations, exquisite dining opportunities, sports collectibles, and up-close-andpersonal sports adventures. Dear friends and family, Happy Spring, everyone! We survived the long winter, and I hope you find yourselves walking more as the sun peeks out for a visit from time to time. First, I wish to thank all the kind support given for the first annual Lunar New Year of the Rooster Celebration last February 24. What a wonderful event to kick off the lunar new year! I just returned from Japan for a short business trip. My mother joined me on this excursion, which allowed me more time with family. My uncle in Ichikawa-shi has been under nursing care at home for over a year now. I witnessed what services the community health care programs provide. I was amazed at the service he received on a daily basis, from portable bathtubs to physical therapy and nursing assistance. It made me very comfortable with the care he was getting from the Japanese healthcare system. Eye-witnessing my uncle’s care made me realize that Keiro Northwest is on the right track. That this 5-star facility is moving in the right direction as the baby boomers are at the age of thinking about future healthcare services. Keiro Northwest has started the home care program and continues to grow the menu of services. I am proud to represent this cutting-edge organization that can weave through the various governmental regulations and policies – which directly affect bottom-line results. Keiro Northwest is the place to watch and follow as we lead the industry in healthcare services. Thank you all for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Brenda Handley Board President

Dear Keiro Northwest Family, On behalf of Keiro Northwest (KNW), thank you to all who attended our 1st Annual Lunar New Year Celebration! Thank you so much to our event co-chairs and “Dynamic Duos,” Brenda & Chuck Handley and Charlene & Jerry Lee, and to all of our generous sponsors, donors and guests for making the inaugural event a “Homerun!” I talked with a guest about the honor and challenges of being a caregiver for her 95+ year-old father. I could empathize as a caregiver for my own parents. After the event, she shared how truly overwhelmed she was by the tremendous community support and how everyone was so friendly and nice… in fact, she called me a few days later, just to say how much she was still impressed! It reminded me of how a community can be “caregivers.” With all of you, KNW can and will remain laser focused on being a trusted partner and caregiver, offering a continuum of programs and services that support the health, wellness, and lifestyle journey of our elders that engages their mind, body and spirit! Happy Lunar New Year!

Your CEO,

Jeffrey

Gary Matsudaira & Lillian Matsudaira Gary is a good son. He does a lot to look after his mom, Lillian. Healthy and happy at over 90, she finds joy in the little things, like See’s Candies Café Latte Krispys®, her favorite snack. Gary, his brother, and his sister all do their part with caregiving, but it helps to have support. Lillian attends Kokoro Kai three days a week (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), at the Seattle location. “I’d be lost without Kokoro Kai,” according to both Lillian and Gary. She loves to play Sudoku and blackjack, which she usually wins. Lillian sees her sister, Fran, and old friends from way back when. Because she no longer cooks, eating lunch at Kokoro Kai is a treat. Miso soup and ochazuke (green tea over rice) are her favorites. While Lillian is there, Gary gets time to recharge and do his own thing, knowing that his mom is having a good time. Tuesdays are “ride days.” Gary likes to drive, and Lillian likes to go along. They take daytrips all over Washington — Ocean Shores, Yakima, and Vantage, to name just a few destinations. She loves to take in the scenery and trusts Gary to keep her safe. On other days, Lil people-watches at the mall. “I just wanna keep her happy,” Gary said.

Falls are serious business Falls among older adults are a serious issue. They not only cause pain but can have long-term or dire consequences. If you or someone you love have fallen recently, or you know someone who is at risk of falling, you can help prevent falls. Wearing proper shoes (and not slippers) can make a big difference, but here are other things you can do to minimize falling risk:

Talk with a health professional to identify and treat medical problems.

Get active

Minimize safety hazards

VV Engage in regular physical activity,

VV Identify fall hazards at home

VV Discuss previous falls with a doctor

VV Improve balance, strength, flexibility,

VV Review medications with your doctor

VV Install safety equipment and maintain

and endurance.

VV Use caution around outside hazards.
