2010-11 SEASON IN REVIEW After a dominant 2009-10 season, the Newberry College women’s golf team knew it would have high expectations, and the challenge would be to meet them. While a much stronger schedule did not result in tournament championships, the Wolves’ lowest-ever stroke average propelled them to the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament for the second consecutive season. The season started at the Pfeiffer Falcon Cup in Badin, N.C., where after a first round 316, the Wolves responded in the second round with a school-record 295 to finish in second place in the tournament. The 26-hole total of 611 tied the school record as well. Newberry carded another solid performance at the Boscobel Invitational in October, finishing in third in a field mixed between Division I and Division II programs. After a shaky first round 322, the Wolves shot a 302 in the second round - the third-lowest round in school history - on the way to a 624 for the tournament. Defending NCAA Division II National Runner-Up Maria Besio shot a 149 to tie for the seventh-lowest 36 holes in school history and finish tied for second in the Invitational. At the Patsy Rendleman Invitational, the Wolves tied for third place after shooting a 625, yet again finishing in the top 10 of the Newberry records. While competing as an individual, sophomore Julia Daneshfar shot identical 73’s and finished in second place. Daneshfar’s 73 marked a career low for her, and would stand as two of the five lowest rounds shot by a Newberry player in the season. The Flagler Fall Slam in St. Augustine, Fla., was next on the schedule, and the Wolves earned another third place finish in a field with regional competition. While the team scores were not as low as in previous tournaments, Newberry kept pace with the competition. Daneshfar was once again Newberry’s top individual with an 11-over 155 to finish in a tie for sixth place. The spring semester got started at Newberry’s home event, hosted at the Moss Creek Golf Course on Hilton Head Island. The Wolves finished in second in an all-Division II field, mere strokes behind fellow regional tournament competitor UNC Pembroke. Barbara Castro finished second in the tournament with a 10-over par 158 to mark her highest career finish in any tournament. Newberry’s top four golfers on those two days finished in the top 10 of the tournament. 2

Newberry’s most impressive tournament came with its lowest relative finish, as the Wolves came in 13th at the DIvision I Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. Of 33 teams in the tournament, the Wolves were the only non-Division I team to make the top half cut for the third day. They improved their scores consistently and were just six strokes out of the top 10. Daneshfar shot an 11-over to earn the best Newberry score in the tournament, as the Wolves’ 922 over 54 holes set a new school and conference record. The season took an unfortunate turn at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitation in central Florida, where the Wolves went against the top teams in the nation. Newberry was disqualified after an improper start on the shotgun start of the third and final round. The regular season closed with one of the Wolves’ tightest finishes yet, as they finished third at the Pinehurst Challenge, just two strokes behind Saint Leo and UNC Pembroke. Those two schools are seeded just ahead of Newberry ath the regionals. Consistency was the name of the game at Pinehurst, as Besio, Castro and Daneshfar all tied for sixth at 13over, with Lisa Brandl just one stroke behind them. Based on their strong regular season performance, four Wolves were named all-South Atlantic Conference, with a conference record three players on the first team. The trio of Besio, Castro and Daneshfar were all named to the first team, while Natalia Perez earned second team honors. Head coach Lauren Ressler McCants was also named the SAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. At the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships, the Wolves aimed for a second consecutive league title, but fell painfully short. Leading after 36 holes, Newberry could not hold on and were bested by two strokes by Carson-Newman College. Daneshfar led the pack in third place with a 232, the ninth-best 54-hole performance in school history. Besio was in seventh with a 238 and Perez tied for ninth with a 241. Newberry was the only school with all of its players in the top 20 of the tournament. The Wolves now know their capabilities this season and will head to Eaglebrooke with their eyes on yet another prize - their first chance at a national tournament berth. HEAD COACH LAUREN McCANTS in her fourth season at Newberry • A 2006 graduate of Yale South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year - 2010, 2011

Lauren McCants is in her fourth season as head women’s golf coach at Newberry College. In 2010-11, the Wolves have earned their second consecudtive berth to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The Wolves became the first women’s golf team in South Atlantic Conference history to have three players named first team all-SAC, as Newberry finished as the tournament runners-up. A total of four Wolves earned all-SAC honors this year. The 2009-10 season, McCants’ third with Newberry, could be considered the best in the history of the scarlet and gray women’s golf program. Claiming the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship in April, Newberry completed an unprecedented run of four consecutive tournament victories and six overall tournament wins in nine competitions in 2009-10. The scarlet and gray qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional as a team and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Golf World/NGCA Division II Coaches’ Poll throughout the season. Newberry individuals won four tournaments including three from 1st Team All-SAC selection Maria Besio. A sophomore, Besio was crowned the champion of the SAC Tournament while shooting a conference-tying 225 over 54 holes. The score also broke Newberry’s individual school record for a 54-hole low. Before the SAC Championships, McCants was named the 2009-10 SAC Coach of the Year. Newberry also featured the SAC Freshman of the Year for a second consecutive season in Josefine Mensner. The scarlet and gray placed two members on both the first Team and second Team All-SAC teams. Earning a bid to the 2010 NCAA Super Region 2 Tournament, McCants and Newberry finished in 8th place at the par-71, 6,839yard Country Club of Salisbury, N.C. Despite Newberry falling short of making the NCAA National Championships, Besio tied for 7th place and advanced as an individual after a four golfer, four hole playoff. Besio would head to the Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. and lead the national tournament field through three rounds before eventually taking 2nd place. McCants became the first coach in Newberry women’s golf history to advance an individual to the national tournament. Newberry broke team records for an 18-, 36-, and 54-hole during 2009-10, nine top-10 placements, and eight top-5 placements. Individually, the scarlet and gray had 32 top-20 placements, 22 top-10 placements, 17 top-5 placements, and 16 all-tournament team selections. The scarlet and gray’s overall win/loss record of 107-10 and consistently ranked in the top-10 in the Golfstat Inc. head-to-head

There she was responsible for the delivery of The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum to participants ages 7-18 as well as assisting the Houston Golf Association with the 2007 Shell Houston Open. McCants graduated in May 2006 from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. At Yale, McCants was a member of the Ivy League Championship team in 2003 and 2006. Individually, she captured medalist honors at the 2003 Harvard Invitational at the Dunes Course at Country Club of New Seabury in Massachusetts. McCants served as captain in 2004 and 2005 and was awarded the Widdy Neale Most Valuable Player award three of her four seasons. While at Yale, she studied Political Science and American Government and was President of the Epsilon Tau chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta.
