2010-11 SEASON IN REVIEW The Newberry College men’s golf team continued a dominant run in the South Atlantic Conference in the 2010-11 season, as the Wolves picked up their third conference championship in the last four seasons on the way to the fifth regional bid in program history. The season started with two impressive wins in the fall’s first two tournaments. The Wolves headed to New Jersey to start the season and give local seniors Ben Lown and Daniel Stanley the chance to see parts of the country they hadn’t yet experienced. Newberry came away with that experience, as well as a 19-stroke victory over Seton Hall in the Rutgers Invitational. Matthew Killen fired a then-school record 65 in the very first round of the season, as Newberry dominated a field of 15 northeastern Division I schools. The Wolves returned home to host the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic and earned a 10-stroke win over UNC Pembroke on the Wolves’ home course at the MidCarolina Club in Prosperity. Matthew Campbell and Ben Lown each carded 4-under 140s to lead the tournament, while Chandler Gruenemeier had a 2-under par 142 for the Wolves’ B-squad. After the two straight wins, the Wolves finished fourth at the Clayton State Laker Collegiate Invitational just two days after the win at Mid-Carolina. Daniel Stanley shot under par in all three rounds of the tournament, carding a team low 212 (4-under par) to tie for fourth in the tournament. Following the Laker Collegiate, the Newberry B-squad finished fourth at the Tusculum Fall Classic with a 6-over 574, ahead of five A-squads from the South Atlantic Conference. The fall season was closed out with the Wolves’ third tournament victory of the season, as Newberry shot a 21-over par 861 in three rounds to claim the title at the Will Wilson Southeast Regional Preview in Clemmons, N.C. Stanley was the tournament medalist, shooting a 1-over par 211 for the three rounds, closing out the tournament with a 4-under par 66, which tied his career low round. His 211 was the fourth-lowest 54-hole total in school history and is currently the lowest tournament score by a Newberry golfer this season. Four of the Super Regional participants joining Newberry finished behind the Wolves in the Regional Preview. Spring began at the Matlock Collegiate against the 2

toughest Division II field Newberry would see in the course of the season, as Newberry finished fifth, 11 strokes behind champion West Florida. Stanley once again led the Wolves, finishing in a tie for fifth with a 4-under par 212 through the three round tournament. Another tough test came at the Charleston Shootout, a Division I tournament, where the Wolves carded their worst scores of the year and still finished in 11th. Campbell’s 3-over par 219 tied for 12th in the field to lead Newberry. Newberry finished fourth at the Richard Rendleman Invitational the next week, led by an even-par performance from Lown to finish tied for fourth in the field. A tough field at the Lander Bearcat Golf Classic saw Newberry finish ninth, following another great performance from Lown. His 4-under in the tournament tied him for second in the Wolves’ final full tournament of the season. A program record fell as seven individuals competed at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate, where Gruenemeier finished the tournament tied for seventh with a 2-under par score. Most impressive though, was after a first round 78, the sophomore came back and fired a school record 64 to cement his spot in the postseason lineup. Prior to the SAC Championships, the conference announced the league’s annual awards, with the Wolves dominating once again. Campbell claimed the SAC Golfer of the Year award, the first in the program’s history. Lown earned the SAC Scholar Athlete award, which is awarded to a player who is a leader on the course, in the classroom and the community. Three Wolves - Campbell, Lown and Stanley - earned first team all-SAC recognition, and head coach Brian McCants earned his fourth consecutive SAC Coach of the Year award. At the SAC Championships, the Wolves earned their third title in four seasons with a five-stroke lead over Tusculum. Stanley won his second consecutive SAC title with a 3-over par 219. Gruenemeier tied for seventh with an 11-over 227 and Lown’s 13-over 229 tied him for 19th. All five Newberry competitors finished in the top 20, the only team in the league to do so. Coming off of yet another championship, the Wolves are primed and ready, looking to finish in the top five and advance to the College’s second national tournament. Newberry College Men’s Golf

HEAD COACH BRIAN McCANTS in his seventh season at Newberry • A 1994 graduate of Ferris St. South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year - 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011

Brian McCants is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Newberry College men’s golf team. He was promoted to the head job in July of 2005 after serving as the team’s assistant coach during the 2004-05 season. In 2010-11, McCants claimed his fourth consecutive South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honor, as he led the Wolves to their third SAC Championship in four years. The Wolves earned their first SAC Golfer of the Year award (Matthew Campbell) and Daniel Stanley was the SAC Champion for the second straight year. Newberry won four tournaments in the season, and the school record for lowest individual 18 hole round fell twice. Newberry qualified for the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons. The Newberry men’s golf program enjoyed another strong season in 2009-10 with the scarlet and gray qualifying for the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional for the third consecutive season. In nine tournaments during the 2009-10 campaign, Newberry picked up five top-5 placements, eight top-15 placements, and two tournament victories. The scarlet and gray finished in second place at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships and were consistently ranked in the top-25 nationally in the Golf World/Nike Coaches’ Poll. The 2010 season saw Newberry break every 18-, 36-, and 54hole low for both the team and individual records. Senior Sean Collard and junior Daniel Stanley each shot a 66 to hold the 18-hole low. Stanley also owns the school record for a 36- and 54-hole low with stroke totals of 135 and 207 respectively. Newberry crushed the school record for a team low for 18 holes with a 273 in the second round of The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic in mid-September. The seven best team 18-hole rounds of golf in Newberry history have come during the 2010 season. The scarlet and gray also set the team record for a 36-hole low at The Honda of Columbia Fall Classic with a combined stroke total of 551 which bested the previous low by 23 strokes. A new 54-hole low was set at the Bearcat Classic in late March when Newberry totaled 844 strokes, 28 lower than the previous mark. McCants’ squad placed two on the All-SAC first team and one on the second team. Six Newberry individuals earned all-tournament honors throughout the 2009-10 season. In his time as head coach of

Newberry College Men’s Golf

Newberry men’s golf, McCants has guided the scarlet and gray to 35 top-5 placements and seven tournament championships. Newberry individuals have placed first in McCants’ tenure including two SAC Championship winners in Ben Lown (2008) and Daniel Stanley (2010, 2011). McCants has placed 13individuals on all-conference teams and coached three consecutive SAC Freshman of the Year award winners; Ben Lown in 2008, Matthew Campbell in 2009, and Chandler Gruenemeier in 2010. McCants coached 2011 SAC Player of the Year Matthew Campbell and has had two GCAA AllRegion selections, three GCAA All-America Scholars and one GCAA All-America Honorable Mention. As an assistant during the 2004-05 season, McCants helped direct the men’s team to four top-five finishes and a fifth place in the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships, shooting 306-304-294. It was the lowest 54 hole total at the SAC Championships by a Newberry team. McCants came to Newberry via Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was a sales representative at Golf Dimensions. McCants was previously the head men’s golf coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. During his year at St. Andrews, McCants coached a pair of players to the NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional. His year at St. Andrews also saw Josh Nahm become the first St. Andrews player to be named to an All-CVAC Conference team. Nahm, a junior on that team in 2001-02, is now a lead golf instructor at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. McCants also served as a caddie at legendary Pinehurst Resort, home of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championships. While in Pinehurst, McCants caddied for Eric Jorgensen, the 2002 Men’s North/South Amateur Champion, and Elizabeth Burden, a 2001 North/South Women’s Amateur Quarterfinalist. McCants is married to the former Lauren Ressler, who is the Wolves’ women’s golf coach. The pair have each been named the SAC Coach of the Year for two straight seasons.

Newberry College Men’s Golf

South/Southeast Super Regional

The Newberry College men’s golf program has qualified for the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional tournament once again in 2011, marking the program’s fifth all-time appearance in the last six seasons. This year’s South/Southeast Super Regional Tournament will be held at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla.

The Ron Garl-designed golf course located in the Victoria Park community, owned by Kolter Homes, preserves the natural flow of Mother Nature while providing golfers with her challenges. Rolling hills, spans of flowing greens, buffers of oak hammocks, Augusta Pines, historic oaks and sandy terrain of natural wetlands are the visuals a golfer can expect at Victoria Hills Golf Club. These visuals also surprise, challenge and tease a golfer’s skills throughout its eighteen holes. Victoria Hills’ course record is a 65, set by PGA Tour player Chris DiMarco. The par 72 course measures 7,149 yards in length from the Championship tees. The South and Southeast Regional tournaments take place simultaneously, with the top five teams and top two student-athletes not with one of those five teams (regardless of region) advancing to the National Tournament on May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Florence, Ala. Twenty teams are participating in the Super Regional. Southeast Region: 1. Georgia College 2. Barton 3. Armstrong Atlantic State 4. Columbus State 5. Newberry [South Atlantic Conference] 6.
