2010 Administration Opponents administration 2009 Opponents ADMINISTRATION Women’s Soccer QUICK FACTS AND CONTENTS Dr. V. Scott Koerwer President of Newberry College Newberry College announced on June 11, 2010, that Dr. V. Scott Koerwer, a senior business school administrator, entrepreneur and authority on leadership and strategy, will become the College’s 21st president, effective July 1. He follows Dr. Mitchell Zais, who has served as Newberry’s president since 2000. [Dr. John H. Hudgens II has been serving as acting president since February, while President Zais has been on a planned leave of absence.] The move begins a new era for the College, which has a long tradition of providing educational opportunities for diverse populations of students from around the state and the nation. Newberry is known for the close, personal attention it offers to each of its more than 1,000 undergraduate students. In Dr. Koerwer, the board has selected an entrepreneurial leader who has closely studied the interconnections of professional, business

and liberal arts education and has developed innovative academic programs and strategic alliances across university campuses and with universities around the world. Currently Deputy Dean and Clinical Professor of Management at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, Dr. Koerwer brings a broad range of educational perspectives to the Newberry presidency. He was educated at a leading liberal arts institution, Muhlenberg College and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from a leading science and engineering university, Lehigh University. He was awarded his doctorate in education from the internationally recognized University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Koerwer is also an alumnus of the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In addition to the Moore School, he has served as an executive at two leading schools of management: the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. In accepting the Board’s selection, Dr.

Koerwer commented on his appointment. During the course of his 20-year career in business and higher education, Dr. Koerwer has established a notable track record of collaboration and accomplishment at each institution he has served. Most recently at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, he managed a budget in excess of $50M, and led numerous redesign and development initiatives including the school’s first inclusive, comprehensive strategic planning process. Continuing his record of establishing international partnerships, he forged an alliance with the University of Tikrit in Iraq, laying historic groundwork for building a new education system for the nation as it works to establish a new education and social infrastructure. Dr. Koerwer co-launched three companies including a software company focused on knowledge management and back office operations for higher education clients and a boutique consulting and training firm. As a husband and father, he enjoys spending time with his family --including wife, Christine, and two daughters, Rachel and Julia.

ing, hiring and training of sales executives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also assists with the IMI PGA Tour Player program and was responsible for the construction of IMI’s New York City office. In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, development, and construction, all venue concessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coor-

dination of bowl travel, and many other operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major financial gifts and executive suite licenses. He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic director for development in July 1999 and was named associate athletic director in October 2001. He transitioned to senior associate athletic director in July 2003. Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI championship team.

Brad Edwards Director of Athletics

Brad Edwards was introduced as Athletic Director at Newberry College on May 18, 2009. Prior to coming to Newberry, he served as vice president of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after five years as associate athletic director at the University of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate athletic director from July 2003 to March 2006. Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the National Football League for nine seasons, is currently responsible for the recruit-

he Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team enters the 2010 season with high hopes after wrapping up the 2009 campaign with a school best 13-5-2 overall record, earning their first ever trip to the NCAA postseason tournament. The team kicks off the 2010 schedule with a bang on September 3 against a nationally ranked top five opponent Columbus State before taking on 2007 national champ, the University of Tampa on September 5. Both games will be a part of the Columbus State Tournament in Columbus, Ga. “This season I have put added emphasis on our strength of schedule in hopes of preparing us for the next level in the national tournament,” said third year head coach Karrie Miller. “Our team goals this year are to win the SAC regular season championship, to win the SAC conference tournament championship, get back to the NCAA tournament and make it past the first round.” With just two seniors returning to the team in Amberly Fowler and Christen Chestnutt, Miller will depend on the underclassmen to lead the way. Miller brings in four newcomers, Kristen Stensholt, a junior transfer from Delta State University, Theresa Berman, a sophomore from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and freshman Lauren Singleton from Charleston, S.C., and Bianca Warder from Irmo, S.C. “I didn’t recruit a lot of numbers,” added Miller. “But I recruited players who will make an immediate impact. I chose quality over quantity. I also have a lot of faith in our returners and their experience.” In 2010 the team brings back NSCAA AllSoutheast Region second team and first team All-South Atlantic Conference goalie Emily Rhoades, who broke three school records this past year including goals against average in a season (0.70), shutouts in a season (9) and career shutouts (14).

“Obviously Emily had a phenomenal year last year,” said Miller of her goalkeeper. “And because of that, she has a lot of expectations on her this season. I feel very confident in her ability and leadership to exceed those expectations.” On the offensive side of things, Fowler, the Wolves’ top goal scorer from 2009 with six, will make her way back to the field as will Katie Sas who finished up the year with three goals of her own. The team will miss the offensive power of last year’s seniors Michaela Peach and Laura Mottel. Rhoades was named to the first team All-SAC preseason roster with Fowler and teammate Megan Douglas making the second team roster. The women will open up the home portion of their schedule on September 8 at 3 p.m. against Limestone. The Wolves will then hit the road for two matches against West Georgia and North Alabama before kicking off the conference schedule with a five game home stand on September 18. The home games include SAC foes Lincoln Memorial, Anderson, Mars Hill, Tusculum and Wingate. Newberry will then travel away from home for five straight matches starting on October 9 when they play Erskine. Following the game with the Flying Fleet, the scarlet and gray will take on Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, USC-Aiken and Brevard. The Wolves will return home for their final non-conference contest against Pfeiffer on October 26 before wrapping up their regular season schedule against SAC defending champ Carson-Newman on October 30. The conference championship first round of games will take place on November 2 with the semi-finals and finals November 5 and 7 at Rock Hill.

2010 2009 Opponents Season Recap 2009 season recap 2009 Opponents SEASON OUTLOOK ADMINISTRATION 2008 SEASON RECAP MEET MEET THE NEWCOMERS THE TEAM Women’s Soccer QUICK FACTS AND CONTENTS The 2009 Newberry College women’s soccer team marked a new high in the school’s record book as they put up 13 wins en route to the scarlet and gray’s first ever NCAA post season tournament appearance. The campaign kicked off with a bang as Newberry won its first six of seven contests, five of which were shut outs thanks to National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women’s Division II All-Southeast Region second team goalie Emily Rhoades. Rhoades was the first Newberry College player to receive such an honor. The All-South Atlantic Conference goalie went on to shatter numerous school records with her nine shut outs in 2009, moving her career total to a school best 14, she also holds the lowest goal against average of 0.70 and lowered her career average to 0.92, also a Newberry record. Newberry picked up its first conference win on Sept. 16 at Mars Hill with a 3-0 victory. The women went on to put Brevard away 5-0, hold Wingate to a 0-0 draw and take down Catawba 1-0, putting their early conference record at 3-0-1 before taking their first SAC loss to Tusculum 1-0. The women ended the regular season the same way they started it, with a string of wins, going 5-1 to finish out the schedule. Moving on as the number three seed in the Food Lion SAC tournament Newberry dropped its opening round game to number six seed Lenoir-Rhyne on penalty kicks. Despite the first round heartbreaker Newberry went on to play in the NCAA tourney where they fell to Tusculum in Jefferson City, Tenn. 2-1 after a come from behind rally fell short. Rhoades ended the year being named to the All-SAC first team

14

while teammates Michaela Peach and Sara Geisman earned second team honors.
