The World Needs an Italian Hero The cover of “The Best of Broadcast&Production, Made in Italy 2012/2013” is dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi (pronunciation: [dʒuˈzɛppe ɡariˈbaldi]), the Italian hero who fought for the Unification of the Italian State and also for the freedom of people in Latin America Giuseppe Garibaldi (July 4, 1807 – June 2, 1882) was an Italian military and political key figure. In his twenties, he joined the Carboneria, a clandestine group of Italian revolutionary patriots aiming at reunifying the Italian state, at that time split under a number of dominions (PiedmontSardinia, Papal State, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Austrian Empire and some minor Duchies and Principates). After an unsuccessful insurgence, Garibaldi fled Italy and participated to the War of the Ragamuffins and to the Uruguayan Civil War as the leader of a legion of Italian volunteers. Then he moved back to Italy, where he acted as a commander in the various battles of the Italian Risorgimento, the political and social movement that merged the different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of Italy . He was called “the Hero of Both Worlds" as a tribute to his military successes in both Italy (thus Europe) and in South America. He is considered an Italian national hero. Garibaldi's popularity, his skill at rousing the common people, and his military exploits are all credited with making the unification of Italy possible. He also served as a global exemplar of mid-19th century revolutionary nationalism and liberalism. Garibaldi, along with Giuseppe Mazzini and other Europeans supported the creation of a European federation. Many Europeans expected a unified Germany to become a European and world leader and to champion humanitarian policies. This is noticeable in this part of the letter written by Giuseppe Garibaldi to Karl Blind on 10 April 1865. "The progress of humanity seems to have come to a halt, and you with your superior intelligence will know why. The reason is that the world lacks a nation which possesses true leadership. Such leadership, of course, is required not to dominate other peoples, but to lead them along the path of duty, to lead them toward the brotherhood of nations where all the barriers erected by egoism will be destroyed. We need the kind of leadership which, in the true tradition of medieval chivalry, would devote itself to redressing wrongs, supporting the weak, sacrificing momentary gains and material advantage for the much finer and more satisfying achievement of relieving

the suffering of our fellow men. We need a nation courageous enough to give us a lead in this direction. It would rally to its cause all those who are suffering wrong or who aspire to a better life, and all those who are now enduring foreign oppression".

BLT ITALIA

BLT Italia: over 50 years of experience in television technology BLT Italia was founded in 1959 by Leonardo Bartelletti to design and manufacture professional TV equipment, nowadays used by major broadcasters worldwide BLT is proud to have more than half a century of experience ranging from the electronic tube age to the present HDTV and stereoscopic 3D-HDTV days.

The new BLT Media Server SMS “U” series Family BLT has been designing and manufacturing video servers for the broadcast television industry for many years. The latest product developments allow BLT to offer solutions ranging from 2 channels up to 8 channels in a single unit, featuring simultaneous recording and playback. The material coming from any recording channel can be shared by all playback channels in real time. Each server can be connected with other units via a Gigabit Ethernet network to share live and recorded content as well as clips. The diagram shows a typical OB-van configuration: two server SMS-4U networked with one server SMS-2U and multiple RUS-Color and RUSColorPLUS Control Panels, via LAN connection, in a flexible and easy to set-up system. Each operator panel can be assigned to a server through a set-up menu, with no need to change the cables or hardware layout. In this diagram, the 8 input channels of the two SMS-4U can be used for the live replays, while the SMS-2U with a dedicated RUS-Color controller can be used either for the replays and contribution playout or to compose highlights. The SMS-2U clips are sourced 20 T H E

from the content recorded in the other servers. The contents exchanged between the servers are in native JP2K format and can be exported and reimported in MXF/MOV/AVI formats for third party NLE systems. With the RUS-ColorPlus, a BLT remote controller with an integrated graphic user interface, the above system can manage up to 300,000 clips. The video client control software includes a user friendly playlist creation system where each clip can be associated to the relevant metadata. When connected to an highspeed camera, the SMS-4U server can perform super-slow motion with HDTV at full native resolution, capturing up to three times more frames than conventional systems (150/180 frames/sec).

&

All BLT media servers from the SMS-HD family support both full HDTV and SDTV. The compression engine is based on the advanced JP2K technology which meets all production quality requirements — 4:2:2 process, 10-bit precision, full HDTV resolution and no motion artifacts. Simultaneous recording/playback, random and non-linear access, continuous loop recording with real time clip protection are native SMS-HD features.

The BLT Technology BLT products comply with all international broadcast specifications providing a singleunit solution to most production needs. They are used everyday into OB-VANs and studios worldwide. BLT offers media server solutions for live and sports production events thanks P R O D U C T I O N

DB BROADCAST

DB Broadcast Group: Growing up every year DB Broadcast Group, founded as DB Elettronica features an international presence and a wide range of products A garage story The company was founded in 1975 by a young electronic components salesman, Luciano Ditadi, and a client of the electronic components company, Franco Bertella,. Ditadi was already a local radio enthusiast with a degree in electrical engineering, providing technical assistance and maintenance services to the first local broadcasters in the Venice region, north-eastern Italy. Ditadi and Bertella decided to launch a business together, offering solutions and equipment to meet the needs of the new radio stations. Ditadi provided the engineering knowhow and a healthy dose of youthful enthusiasm; Bertella, with 15 years of experience behind him, was able to provide financial discipline and a keen entrepreneurial eye. As often happens in business success stories, Ditadi and

Bertella’s adventure began in a garage, Bertella’s one. This was the cradle of the DB Group, and the site where the first lowpower FM transmitters were built. At that time, with the FM spectrum being still a largely unexplored territory, these units were likely adequate to get you on the air and tolet your station to be heard even at a remarkable distance. A sudden market success brought a surge in demand. Customers queued outside the garage to get home the equipments as soon as they came out from the production line. This story, told with some nostalgia, points out one of the key factor of the business model that today, on a very different scale, characterizes the DB brand: good value for money is the key to success. It is a success that in 1976, just a year after Ditadi and Bertella joined their efforts, led to establish their

designer and moved up to manage the technical department, also becoming a partner in the company in 1996. In 2000, with the retirement of Bertella, Feliziani had the opportunity to increase his stake to the same level as Ditadi’s. This was not a case of acquiring a “silent partner”, but a young, new partner fully invested in the company. The idea of Bertella and Ditadi, to take a forwardlooking decision for their company, was perfectly clear.

Growing up

EBS Srl was set up by DB Elettronica in 2004, thus creating the DB Group (later ETT Srl was added to the group, too). The move also involved acquiring some of the technical staff of the Abruzzi-based company ABS, including Massimo Rossi, an EBS partner who is currently technical chief at EBS. Although EBS operates in the same markets as DB, it is positioned as a “luxury brand,” offering complex, customized solutions to a more demanding customer base. EBS clients include leading national public and private broadcasters from both Italy and abroad.

In 1986, DB began evolving beyond the FM radio sector. DB invested significant resources in television R&D and hired a team of specialist engineers. Within a year, DB was able to publish its first catalogue of TV technology. By 1990, the range of DB solutions was complete. In 1993, DB recruited Guglielmo Feliziani, a justgraduated telecommunications engineer. He started as a

company. They resigned from their previous jobs and officially set up the DB Elettronica Telecomunicazioni Snc partnership. The partnership became a joint-stock company in 1982, with the DB parent company remaining such ever since. Rossella Giuliato, who joined DB while very young and now is a source of company history, and Ilario Giacomini, who has worked on the technical side of the business since the dawn of the DB Group are still a key presence in the company..

Sales Team

The overview of the DB management team would not be complete without mentioning the gracious presence of Elena Ditadi, who has stood out at the DB stand at trade shows around the world since the 2000 NAB Show. On 4 July 2006, just ahead of her graduation in Communications Sciences, she officially joined the company. Her first task was marketing, with a special focus on Western Europe, francophone Africa and the Americas, as well as sales network coordination duties.

Present and future Today, DB Elettronica has hundreds of authorized dealers worldwide, featuring a global market coverage. Nearly 80% of the markets covered are structured with direct B2B relationships, and only a few are handled via second-level commercial relationships. This close contact and friendship with clients helps DB maintaining the original philosophy of the company early ages. On the commercial side of DB, three managers work alongside Elena Ditadi: Beatrice Martin, who covers the same areas as Elena; Luisa Finetti and Elena Imhoff, who together are in charge for the Asian and other Eastern markets. The entire staff is directly coordinated by Luciano Ditadi and Guglielmo Feliziani. Further boosting the commercial staff is Ilaria Cavinato; as head of after-sales assistance, she is a key figure for the company. MS. Cavinato takes care of various technical aspects of the company T H E

life: from tender projects to customized manuals. DB is particularly proud of its customized equipment manuals that provide Customers with specific, clear and direct assistance tailored to the design of their systems. Andrea Targa is in charge of the technical aspects of design and production, managing a team of seven engineers..

Walls that speak The continuous corporate evolution of the DB Group is evident in the opening its new premises in Padua: Riviera Maestri del Lavoro, 20/1; Tel: +39-049-870-0588; Fax: +39-049-870-0747; website: www.dbbroadcast.com. Within the 5,000-square-meter facility there are 1,200 square meters of stylish office space for the company’s commercial, technical and administrative management. The remaining space is used for production, testing and warehousing. DB, taking into consideration both the headquarters staff and the other group companies, has a total workforce of about 60 people, two-thirds of whom are involved in production. The new Padua facility was made possible by the sales of 2008. That year, the DB Group generated a turnover of more than €10 million with an excellent profit margin. Not used to rest on its success, the DB Group continued with its established philosophy of investing profits back into the company; a move that points out O F

the optimism and confidence DB sees looking forward. In terms of international activity, other than the branch offices in some strategic places, DB is re-organizing all the distributors ‘network all over the world. The group responds to the evolution of the times by exporting not only products but also an all-Italian style of business, a style born of creativity, competence and enterprise.

The family now is growing The DB family is increasing every year: in 2012 DM Broadcast joined DB Group. DM Broadcast is a company focused on turnkey solutions, for FM and TV applications. Thanks to the diversified and extensive experience of the two partners, Marco Giovannini and Didier Muragwabugabo, this new born seems to be launched to success.

DB Group: Three companies and hundreds of solutions for broadcasting The DB Group constantly invests in the development of design and technology with a highly skilled staff that delivers continuous input in terms of cutting-edge solutions. Flexibility Governed by the aim of matching the machine to the specific client needs, DB offers a wide range of easy-to-install and easy-to-set-up options. Moreover, user interfaces with advanced local software or remote control functionality (SNMP, Web, GSM, SMS and e-mail messaging) assure simple and comprehensive system management and configuration. Adaptability From the frozen tundra of the Arctic to the scorching deserts of Africa, DB technology is designed to suit any climatic conditions thanks to reliable, innovative liquid cooling, which DB first introduced in 2004. Cutting-Edge Technology The DB Group policy is to invest in emerging technologies ahead of their time. For example, in the late-1990s, DB committed itself to the development of technology for DVB-T, DVB-T2, ATSC, ISDB-TB transmission and to fixed and portable digital systems required for STL setups. Reliability Investing in new technologies results in advantages that last in time; market experience begins to accumulate earlier, enabling more prompt optimization of products to remain at the forefront of innovation and to assure high levels of reliability and performance. ELBER

Elber on the worldwide market The highly specialised staff, the attention paid to each and every single phase of the production from the design to the realization of the product and the use of high quality components form the benchmark of Elber’s philosophy From its very beginning in 1978, Elber choos to work in the microwave radio link field for the broadcast industry. The company changed several times its location in the Italian Riviera in the north of Italy near Genoa, in order to adapt its structure to the needs of an always expanding market. Today in fact, due to the constant presence at all major international trade shows regarding the broadcast industry, Elber can rely on a widespread diffusion of its products in every part of the world: Europe, Central and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The highly specialised staff, the attention paid to each and every single phase of the production from the design to the realization of the product and the use of high quality components form the basement of Elber's philosophy. The increasing expansion of the company has never kept Elber from maintaining a personal contact with its clients, from the smaller local broadcasters to the main television and radio networks. This philosophy, together with the high reliability of the equipment, allows Elber to offer

a five-year guarantee on its products. Important and continuous investments into the Research & Development Department reflect the ambition to keep the leader position between its competitors as well on national as on international level. An organized and fully-assorted supplier allows a fast procurement of every kind of electronic item, from the basic discrete ones to the most complex IC's, from PCB to mechanical modules. Equipped with an etching machine, all circuitry on PCBs (both on FR4 and Teflon materials) are produced inhouse. department for testing and design check. Elber also broadens its activities to the DENG device market which is the newest and most fascinating challenge at this moment that will allow Elber to design personalized solutions and exceed the nearly 10000 links mounted all over the world. Over 20 years of experience, the care for details and the research for innovation are the keys for high quality and reliable products, characteristics that distinguish Elber on the worldwide market. The founding craft tradition in the production is maintained linked to the actual production philosophy of entirely manufacturing all the products within the company’s premises. From September 2008 on, Elber is fully operational in the new head office in Carasco (GE) in Via Pontevecchio 42 W, 16042 Carasco (GE). The brand-new building on two levels, situated near the former office, covers up to 2000 square metres and represents the best of flexibility and technology. brings the overall company surface to a total of 3000 square metres. This important goal, result of an accurate planning strategy, represents an important confirmation of the mid and long-term ambitions that Elber has established.

Product Line To satisfy the needs of the always growing number of clients and to be competitive in different applications, Elber has a wide range of products in continuous evolution. The products can be distinguished into: fixed radio links (STL systems), mobile radio links, DENG systems and FM links for radio broadcasters. The fixed radio links product line have always been Elber’s selling force. Superior performance and the simplicity of installation are the main characteristics of these products that bring Elber to the world leadership in this market segment. However, to respond to the constant evolutions of the market, it is necessary to develop equipment that require fast installation and have small dimensions. Such characteristics I N

M-THREE SATCOM

M-Three Satcom highlights: the new Teleport in Rome, GbE network and the Tooway service The company managed by Michele Magnifichi, Carlo Morelli, Carmelo Mallia and Edoardo Bernardi is ready to introduce you to a load of innovations. On display: new projects and continuous improvement M-Three Satcom is in the business of broadcast services since 2004: in the same year the company Teleport in San Giuliano Milanese started its operations, and now a new facility in Rome is ready to be launched. The strategy pursued by the company, strengthened by this new project, is very sound, and is focused in two main directions: on the technical side, continuous investments and improvements on infrastructure, on the customer side, high level of attention to the customer and wide flexibility in providing tailored commercial and technical solutions. M-Three Satcom operates one of the digital platform for DTH satellite services on Hot Bird directly from Italy (a rare and valuable asset), and, in the past few years, has built a number of satellite transmissions services around this asset, which became the core of the system. The services provided by the company include turn-key solutions (on a regular or occasional basis) for satellite or radio-link transmissions and optical communications. All this, plus the synergies with fellow companies Telsat end Elber and , recently, Onetastic, have made M-Three Satcom a landmark in Italy.

28 T H E

The new Teleport in Rome

The new teleport in Rome

M-Three golden asset is the Milan teleport, which has developed and grown services around this facility in its 7-year life. The teleport is a real hub, connecting different trasmission technology just as a port is the hub for sea, vehicle or rail transportation; inside the teleport satellite, radio links and optical technologies are matched and used in the best configuration for a specific company or area. Milan teleport also hosts the company fleet of vans for recording and broadcasting, the research lab, the support service for the system integration area and obviously the monitoring system and customer service, both working 24 hours a day. With both knowledge and core operations centralized, M-Three has the required know-how to provide turn-key solutions for every broadcast need; the technical staff blends practical experiences and theoretical knowledge, thus becoming a centre of excellence in Europe. M-Three Satcom teleport is connected to Interoute optical network: with the appropriate mix of all the resources (Interoute capability and diffusion, recording and broadcasting vans, radiolink and teleport satellite connections), optimization of services and cost reduction can be

B E S T

O F

achieved at total ease. M-Three do not rely only on Interoute network: a proprietary network GbE (GigaBit Ethernet) is linking primarily the two teleports of Milan and Rome, and reaches also the company most important customers (Italian and European broadcasters): EBU (Eurovision) sites of Geneve and Rome are connetcted to this network too. All the services provided by MThree (from point to point link to multicast diffusion for IPTV and OTT) are provided on a turn-key basis with all the relevant compression technologies (thanks also to the VAR-Thomson Networks agreement)

The Rome teleport is now operating The new Rome teleport started operations on September 2011. It has been located in the same facility where the main node of Interoute in Rome is (via Cornelia, in the via Aurelia area), and it is a direct expansion of M-Three Satcom services in the Rome area. The proximity with valuable clients and the detailed diffusion of the service are the key issues which drove such an &

P R O D U C T I O N

expansion. The Rome teleport hosts an office area and a technical area (both inside and outside the main building), and its structure has been built with the same accuracy in detail and quality, as the San Giuliano teleport. The organization (teleport, veichle area and area system integration) is also modelled on the same site.

A very important step ahead “We have good relationships with our clients; from these we learnt about their needs and invested in this new teleport that will fulfill their expectations.” says Michele Magnifichi. “Also, Central and South Italy are key areas in the broadcast panorama and we wanted to take full advantage of a local installatiton in these areas. This facility allows us to increase our distribution capability, to achieve geographic redundancy inside Italy both for M-Three Satcom and our partner teleports, to guarantee our clients to reach quickly both our recording and broadcasting vans and our techincal personnel in case on-situ assistance is needed (e.g. VAR Thompson for system integration and action). KA-SAT was launched by the Proton rocket from Baikonur on December 26th, 2010, and is equipped with four groups of multifeed antennas, with the highest pointing precision and wide customization available. To focus on a specific geographic area (small in size, if compared with actual satellite standards), 82 spotbeams are available: this feature entitles the KA-SAT as the most advanced multi-spot satellite currently in operations, worldwide. Each spotbeam is associated with a 237 MHz transponder, and provides a 475 Mb/s band. The multispot design allows to re-use the same

frequency on different antennas, each serving not confining geographical areas: with this feature, KA-SAT uses the same frequency on 20 different antennas, thus enhancing the actual band of the satellite up to70 Gb/s (definitely a cosmic value). Main uses of KA-SAT includes Internet nomadic access, company networks, IP telephone services or medical services. Innovative broadcast services can also be carried out. M-Three exploited the most advanced features of KA-SAT to design and launch an innovative service on the broadcast market. A new compact van, with low costs in fitting and operation, with a high degree of modularity has been designed and built. The van relies on Fiat Ducato mechanics, fitted with preconnected modules (“cases”) , ready for plug-and-play. Each “case” can host a complete production system focused on a defined environment: video SD, video HD, audio, terrestrial or sat receiving system, or any combination of the previous according to the needs of the customer when working on the field. The most important innovation is the connection between each case and the remaining devices stably fitted on the van: a simple RJ-45 cable will do the job. This van has a complete IP architecture, and this completes KA-SAT features very smoothly and efficiently. Time by time, according to the production to perform, the van can be equipped just with the modules specific for the job. After the connection with the inP R O D U C T I O N

board devices has been made, with the RJ-45 cable, all “case” devices will automatically set-up to operate together with the van devices. KA-SAT also exploits online booking for the satellite space, no more operatorconducted booking will be necessary: personnel working on a production in the field may book their space on-line, saving time and with a ease in connection up-to-now unknown. High speed in data transmission (allowed by the particular design of KA-SAT) allows a very cost-effective way of work even in HD-satellitenews-gathering. The Tooway terminal device has a maximum speed of 40 Mbps (for downloading) and 10 Mbps (for uploading). A further upgrade, available in a short time, will increase these values up to 50Mbps (download) and 20 Mbps (upload)

POWERBOX ITALIA

Powerbox: in business for more than 25 years Powerbox has been in business for more than 25 years. We have designed thousands of different power supplies in power ranges from 1 W to tens of kW in all quadrants AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC and AC/AC converters The target of any development process are the customer’s need, priorities and requirements and based on these we utilize the technologies, components and topologies that best fit the product. Of course, we take full advantage of earlier designs to fully benefit of our previous experiences and our knowledge. However, for some developments this is not enough and we have to stress the matter to find the optimal solution. During the development process, we continuously check that the result will meet applicable laws and standards as well as the required certifications and environmental constraints defined in the design specification. Each market segment has its own set of requirements that must be considered and fulfilled. The relevant requirements are not of course the same, but they all have one thing in common:They all have precisely defined demands for voltage, current, power, and performance to ensure reliable and continuous operation. In selecting the optimal power supply it is essential to ensure that the

characteristics of the power supply are correctly matched to the application needs. For example, in the medical sector, where the continuous operation of a power supply can be a matter of life or death, both safety and reliability issues are major concerns. Our long and very broad experience in power supply development enables us to offer youccustom designed products for a wide variety of electronics: from small to very large, from one input to many inputs, from ultra low voltage (few V) to high voltage (10’s of kV), etc. Our top skills are in complex designs with many output voltages, high isolation and tough environmental conditions. With many years experience in designing power supplies there is practically no application beyond our capability. We are able to offers a wide range of power supplies mainly developed for equipment for the transmission of analog and digital television signals or FM transmission. Serving an ever increasing number of new customers and products, Powerbox Italy has developed extensive skills in providing power supply products for the Broadcasting market. In 2010 Powerbox Italia moved to a new location. The new offices are in Camparada, around 30 km north east from Milan success is the Italian design team's skills in the unique designing aspects for this specific market. Powerbox offer advanced and reliable technical solutions in line with the company's strategy. Examples of the broadcasting applications include: l High power analog /digital TV transmitters l MMDS modulator l TV Exciters l Audio Mixers l Compact high power amplifier l FM Transmitters For all of these applications, reliability of the power supply is mandatory. Down time is very expensive and any failure or misservice may also be costly due to

remote locations and tower mounted equipment. The design, the pre-series assessment and the precompliance tests of the units are directly performed by Powerbox whereas the manufacturing is taken care of qualified partners. The co-operation is very close, allowing easy and fast feed-back from the factory to the R&D department. The design is then refined to best suit the production criteria The manufacturing partners are located both in Italy and in Eastern Europe. The Eastern European partners are mainly involved in the manufacturing of mature products and high volumes.

Specifically, the cropping rectangle has been adopted in 3D video broadcasting applications. The purpose was to insure the backwards compatibility with existing 2D video apparatus, especially during the ongoing transition phase of TV services. In other words, the cropping window is a method for transforming a frame compatible 3D picture into a 2D service compatible picture.

VECTOR

Vector: from broadcasting to microwave design The reliable radio planning and optimization tools

The WinRPT suite is thought to manage a comprehensive radio network design: from the antenna systems building to the main coverage and interference prediction maps. Thanks to the new measurement management, analyses can be tuned and hence optimized to come as much as possible close to the real values. Finally, WebRPT is the overall application which immediately allows to look-up the database, display all database elements, produce statistics analysis and detailed reports.

RD Editor Always bearing market needs in mind and putting broadcasting advices to good use, Vector has developed a new tool to make even easier and faster the design process. The 3D editor for the geometric synthesis of radiating systems is a new concept way to create and edit an antenna system directly from its graphical interface with an extreme ease of use. Two steps are enough to build a complete antenna system starting from 38 T H E

scratch. The great benefit derived from the simplicity of antenna systems creation and editing, as well as the ability to simultaneously display both irradiation-solid and 3D system plant, undoubtedly will be appreciated by all those who daily deal with antennas construction, installation and systems’ simulation. Copying, pasting, duplicating antenna arrays, changing data panels or the entire group, as well as adding offset in any direction, always controlling the resultant radiation pattern, has never been so practical and friendly. From today on, coverage and interference analysis performed by WinRPT Broadcasting will be even faster.

suitable to be imported in the measurements’ database. In this way, it is simple to build up a wellorganized historical archive of measurements with measurement campaigns recorded and collated according to data, name, channel, region, etc... For each record, where a measurement is archived, the most significant values (BER, MER, QSA and em field) are able to be graphically represented with different colors. A so structured archive based on the same GIS engine where coverage predictions are performed gives one of the most competitive advantage that a customer can ask: feasibility of making comparison between measurements and simulations values.

tools for lookingup WinRPT database without needing a client of WinRPT and hence its required technical proficiency. Beyond surfing inside your RDB and displaying search results as a list in the webpage, in CSV and PDF files and still on Google Maps, it allows to perform several statistical analyses for all the elements in the database producing techtrends for studying the deployments of radio networks as well as producing historical or annual reports. Amongst the elements that can be looked-up in the RDB are: locations, pointto-point and point-to-multipoint links, satellite stations and broadcasting systems.

Microwave Microwave radio links for broadcast industry, as well as the recent transformation process that involves network adjustment for high capacity links in order to handle the expected increase in traffic data, need qualified and reliable tools. In fact, the new engineering of a transport network is an extremely complex process that cannot be achieved without the aid of specialized planning tools. WinRPT – Point to Point is the solution thought to manage microwave networks from early planning to automatic frequency assignment, topological network analysis and report generation. Features such as analysis and verification of a radio link, link budget evaluation, I N

availability, quality, margin, losses and, finally, interference calculations are of course standard features included in the software.

The Team of Vector company

Radio/TV Broadcasting In the same GIS environment where the WinRPT suite works, the WinRPT – Broadcasting module allows user to perform the most accurate coverage and interference maps. The proven results let the software introducing by itself. The high level of reliability is guaranteed by a particular attention to evaluation methods, ITU/ETSI regulations and implementation of propagation models specific for broadcasting technology. Actually, the real strength of the tool is the very strict adherence to operators’ demands. The need to prevent networks from interfering is a real example of Vector’s listening to the industry. Through this module Vector’s customers are now able to optimize timedelay of multi-transmitters in SFN networks simply analyzing the critical areas and “moving” the interference where more convenient. The analysis is strengthened by the ability to compare graphical and analytic results. Elaborations produced by WinRPT – Broadcasting or, alternatively, obtained from outside can be merged with the aim of assessing which of the analyzed coverage maps satisfies the requirements.

Which are typically the percentage of served area and population density maximization.

Activities Vector has focused its attention on the following subjects: software solutions, territorial data and radio planning services. Vector operates specifically in radio network planning and design, providing software tools for the design, evaluation, management and simulation of radio frequency networks from broadcasting to microwave and point-to-multipoint networks, from broadband wireless access to

environmental impact and very low frequency magnetic fields generated by the distribution of power lines. The current tool structure is highly modular and divided into configurable modules to meet every need. Vector offers its customers a fully integrated cartographic management. Beyond the DTM (Digital Terrain Model) available at different resolutions and accuracy, multimap layers can be used: land use clutter for ground occupancy description, borders, population clutter, vector and raster data for all the countries in the world.
