Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at Plainedge High School on Saturday, May 4th, the games will include a fullday of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes –children and adults with intellectual disabilities –have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-

style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“The Special Olympic Spring Games provide a wonderful opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of these special athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differentlyabled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and thank the Plainedge School District for their assistance in making this important event a reality.”

They’ve Got The Scoop

If you want to stay informed, check with the hard-working young reporters of the Lockhart Ledger. The fourth and fifth graders who comprise the staff of the student newspaper at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are looking to keep their classmates in the know.

The Lockhart Ledger is a digital newspaper published a few times throughout the year. Students report on events at school, conduct interviews with teachers and share their thoughts on kid-friendly topics like books, movies, toys and

video games.

There is always a lot going on at Lockhart, and the Ledger’s writers love to share this news. Lucianna Aiello wrote about the Submerge Storytelling event in school and the fifth grade financial literacy trip to Commerce Plaza. Reilly Maher penned stories about “The Little Mermaid” musical production and a pickleball unit in physical education classes.

“I like writing,” fourth grader Mario Magmanelli said. “It helps the students so they know what’s going on.”

The Ledger staff members don’t just write,

they also do the layout and design with Canva. Just like any other newspaper, they make sure to enhance their stories with photos and graphics.

Adviser Emily Bresnihan said that the Lockhart Ledger was around in the 1990s as a print newspaper, and was revived last year as a digital edition. It is sent to parents, teachers and staff, and students can also access it on their Chromebooks.

“The Ledger staff does a great job and they are very committed,” Ms. Bresnihan said. “They learn to be better writers, and learn more about their school and their community.”

Volunteers Needed For Rain Garden Work Party

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites volunteers to join the upcoming Rain Garden Work Party at Theodore Roosevelt Park, to help maintain the Town’s raingardens which help prevent stormwater pollution. The event will take place at the Western Waterfront at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay on Saturday, May 4th, and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves for the occasion.

“We welcome all those interested in native plant gardening to come join our spring Rain Garden Work Party. Participants will learn about rain gardens’ ecological impact while helping to maintain them,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We will work alongside volunteers and our environmental partners to weed, rake, prune, plant and mulch while learning about the environmental benefits

these structures provide. This family-friendly program welcomes participants of all ages, particularly those seeking to fulfill community service hours.”

Rain gardens were installed at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay in partnership with Friends of the Bay and the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District. These gardens effectively filter stormwater runoff before it reaches local waterways. Rain gardens also help alleviate problems associated with flooding and drainage, recharge the ground water supply, provide habitat and food for wildlife and enhance the beauty of local communities.

“A rain garden is a collection of native plants placed in a small depression designed to slowly absorb rain water runoff. They have numerous environmental benefits, such as filtering pollutants, reducing flooding, and providing food and habitats to wildlife,” added Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “However, they must be maintained regularly to ensure healthy soil, healthy plants, and a healthy community, which is why we’re seeking volunteers to assist with our existing rain gardens at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.” Volunteers are invited to gather at the Western Waterfront, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay, on Saturday, May 4th. The Rain Garden Work Party will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants should bring work gloves, and community service hours are offered to participants. Another High Note For Massapequa Music Program

For the 16th consecutive year and the 17th time overall, the Massapequa School District has been nationally recognized for its exceptional music education program. It was named to the NAMM Foundation’s 2024 Best Communities for Music Education list.

This is the 25th year that the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has published its Best Communities for Music Education list, recognizing hundreds of schools and districts across the country. To be considered, the district had to submit an extensive

application outlining the components of its music education program as well as the support its receives from the board of education, administrators and the community.

Massapequa’s repeated inclusion on the list reflects its strong music program, with a wealth of opportunities for students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. From general music classes, to band, chorus and orchestra ensembles, to annual musical productions, there are extensive opportunities for students.

for Music Education program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community members who have made music education part of a well-rounded education,” said Vincent Green, director of fine and performing arts. “This recognition is a testament to the Massapequa community for their continuing support for the fine and performing arts. Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Support Group On Zoom

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions
