Students Learn About Dental Hygiene

Northwest Elementary School in Amityville recently held numerous assembles on dental hygiene for students in grades K-2.

Kiddsmiles Pediatric Dentistry dentist Katie Neary-Paladino held a presentation on the

importance of dental health. The interactive presentation featured sad faces by the foods that are unhealthy for teeth, happy faces next to the foods that are healthy for teeth, and shocked faces at the sugar in apple juice and soda. After the presentation,

Kiddsmiles held a Q&A session on tips to maintain a healthy set of teeth.

Kiddsmiles also supplied each of Northwest’s students with a goodie bag of items to support good dental hygiene at home.

Deadline To Apply For Physical Disaster Loans Approaching

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding businesses, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters in New York affected by the severe storms and ﬂooding that occurred Jan. 9-10, to apply for physical damage disaster loans by May 10 deadline.

The declaration covers Suffolk County and the adjacent Nassau County in New York.

Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize future disaster damage. Approved loans may qualify for a loan amount increase of up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may include a safe room or storm shelter, sump pump, French drain or retaining wall to help protect property and occupants from future damage.

Interest rates can be as low as 4% for businesses, 3.25% for private nonprofit organizations and 2.688% for homeowners and renters with terms up to

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

Students, teachers and administrators throughout the Amityville School District participated in numerous activities to celebrate the solar eclipse on April 8.

Amityville’s youngest learners at Northeast Elementary School participated in arts and crafts as they learned about the rare occurrence of a solar eclipse. Middle school and high school students and teachers in the district observed the solar eclipse at 3:25 p.m. through the use of eclipse glasses. People throughout the district were excited to be a part of this historical event.

Students Get A Special Lesson In Korean Culture

Students in Ms. Santaly and Ms. Marcedo’s visual storytelling and foreign films studies classes at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School had a special visit from members of the Korean

Spirit & Culture Promotion Project on April 10.

Younhee Shin and Kyung Pak spoke to students about Korean history and culture globally, emphasizing both historical contributions and modern innovations that Korea shares with the world. Students watched a video called “Hangul: The Language of Compassion.” Created by King Sejong in the mid-15th century, Hangul aimed to democratize the written language, making it more accessible to the general population than the Chinese characters used at the time and improve living standards.

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents

Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Support Group On Zoom

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions will be held on Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom for 6 weeks from May 2nd through June 6, 2024. For more information and to register, call Nina Foley, LMSW at (516) 877-4315.

The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program offers emotional support and resources to people with and/or concerned about breast cancer.
