from thepublishers We’ve come to the conclusion that it’s going to be a while before we have a decent family picture to run. Peyton insisted on holding Pinky bear, her water and Adam’s hair brush. Adam insisted on changing the photo location from the field to the log. And he had to have the camera remote. So, there you go. Just an hour before this shot was taken, Adam was planking over a bloated, wiggly worm on a wet parking lot, hovering over it as if to say, “Nobody touch him. This one’s mine!” Since the worm was still alive (and we still needed to get back to the car), I suggested we pick him up with a twig and take him back to his home on the grass (near the car). You would have thought I had given a 16-yearold the keys to the sports car. On any other day, we probably would have dedicated a page in his journal to that worm. The first page was devoted to a snail we found in the driveway. Another, to a magnolia pod. A sweet potato. The berries off a holly bush. And a skeleton. Not a plastic Halloween skeleton, but a real one we saw while hiking at the creek behind our home. Excited to find the remains of a snake, Adam kicked off his shoes and started

splashing in the creek, pretending to float the snake downstream. Then we saw what used to be the head. The skull was bigger than the size of my fist which meant we had been playing with the backbone of an animal that had legs. My mind immediately turned to Angelo, our cat who had disappeared last year. After counting the teeth, we determined this was not Angelo, but likely a fox. But even if it had been Angelo, we were ready to honor him. Either with a belated burial beside Jerky and Millington, or stored in the shed for a future biology lesson. Come to think of it, Jerky and Millington are resting in peace right behind this log. A family reunion. Happy Thanksgiving! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Present moment perfection In late-September a friend gave me a single fig from her tree. I ate it, tasting in that moment a moment so true and pure it was better than riches… just quiet joy. Local, seasonal fruit. One sunlit moment in time. Completely ordinary, yet unaccountably beautiful. A very simple, yet very thoughtful gift, which is always the best kind. Time being what it is, that now seems a long time ago, but the sensation remains vivid. As time rushes forward— scientists proving the earth’s velocity truly has increased, it’s not just our crazy lives—we humans rush about striving for mindfulness, single moments whose purity or beauty breaks through the chaos for seconds and leaves us without words. These moments, like the fig, fill our lives, many perfect moments becoming one beautiful whole. And yet so many of them are lost, forgotten, washed away by the afternoon tide while others stay etched in our minds over the long years ahead. In this month’s column, I’d like to propose wine as an anchor that grounds us, connecting us to what is good and real and lasting. Wine’s history stretch-

es back thousands of years, lending continuity and perhaps credibility, but think also about those occasions when we most imbibe: long meals with family and friends, shared laughter, tears, confessions and sometimes downright hilarity. Wine gulped without tasting, or drunk to get tipsy is not the same as wine sipped, savored and used to enhance a consciously prepared meal. And so the moments pass, one ephemeral instance after another, constituting our lives. We may never end the constant barrage of chores, work and obligations we feel compelled to complete, so perhaps the best we can do is to go through life awake with eyes opened in reverence, grateful for this blink we’ve been given on earth. “Our traffic has tripled from approximately a year ago at this time,” said David Pounds, as he caught a break behind the counter of his gift shop at the Walton’s Mountain B&B and General Store. It’s been decades since The Walton’s first aired on television and though it went off the air years ago, reruns have kept the series alive. “When they are watching the program, it gets the idea in their head that they want to find Walton’s Mountain.” In real life, there is no Walton’s Mountain but there is a Schuyler, Virginia, which is where the show is set in the mind of its creator, Earl Hamner, Jr. More than 200 members of the Waltons International Fan Club gathered in Los Angeles recently to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hamner’s most famous contribution to American popular culture. “When the show was on, people asked, ‘Why would anyone want to watch a poor family in Virginia during the Depression,’ said Hamner. “The answer was you – you, the audience.” “CBS stayed with us (and the audience kept increasing). For each one of us involved in the series it was a life-changing event. We were involved in a landmark TV series telling credible stories about credible people. The stories were about enduring values. And the cast was just like a family, with relationships that continue to this day.” The Waltons family was based on Hamner’s own and the setting was Schuyler, where his parents had raised him, his four brothers and three sisters in the 1920s and 30s. The show is set during The Great Depression leading into World War II. “The show had an impact.” said Hamner. “Schuyler became a tourist destination. People came to Schuyler looking for Drucilla’s Pond and Ike Godsey’s store. I once was on the phone with my mom and she said, ‘I can’t talk for long. There’s a couple here from Ireland and they just love the show.’” Jopie and Ken Donnelly are devoted fans who rolled into town in a car bearing Ontario license plates.

“It’s the story. The family. The struggles. Everybody goes through it. And family means a lot to people. I enjoy it because it’s wholesome. It’s the trial and tribulations that everybody goes through. Not the spectacular things everybody goes through.” Dorothy Brown and Richard Ball, a couple from Wisconsin, say visiting Hamner’s home town is like “being in another world.” “He’s always wanted to come,” Dorothy said, referring to Richard. “He got goose bumps the closer we got.” More than 20 cast members and writers were on hand for the celebration in Los Angeles and many of them spoke of the impact Hamner and the show had on their lives. “What’s special is the sweet energy he embodies. A Virginia gentleman,” said Kami Cotler, who played Elizabeth, based on Hamner’s youngest sister Nancy. “Earl is one of the sweetest men I’ve ever met,” said Eric Scott. who played Ben Walton. “I had been in the business for five years when I met him. I didn’t know I would ever meet a good old boy who made eye contact. He called me ‘uncle.’ I said, ‘No, we’re brothers.’ I was playing two of his brothers, (who were combined into a single character for the show). He’s a warm and nurturing guy, and he reminded us all we were playing his family. But he gave us a lot of freedom to play the parts. He didn’t want us to consider what his brothers might have done in a situation.” Several of the cast members talked about visiting Schuyler. “Schuyler is a wide spot in the road,” said Joe Conley, who played country store owner Ike Godsey. “Earl made it famous. It’s beautiful there in the summer. I’ve been there a lot. The first time was in 1975. I had been making speeches for the American Cancer Society and I ran into a minister down in Williamsburg who offered to show me around. I drove to Charlottesville and met up with him at the Boar’s Head Inn. He took me in his car to Schuyler and showed me around and introduced me to Mrs. Hamner and we had tea with her. Sweet lady. We visited an orchard and I brought apples home from Virginia. Louise (his wife) brought moonshine.” “I try to visit Schuyler every five years or so,” said Eric Scott. “When I was 17 and the show was on, I went back East with Jon (Walmsley) and we stayed at the Hamner house. Mrs. Hamner put us in the girls’ room. Someone knocked on the front door and Mrs. Hamner said go answer it, it will be a nice surprise for someone.” Said David Harper of Schuyler, “It hasn’t changed very much visually. It’s kind of typical of mountain towns in Virginia…small houses…it’s like a time machine, seeing where Earl grew up.” Kami Cotler came to Nelson County to teach for a few years and has been to Schuyler many times. “I was thankful to be in Nelson. I didn’t really understand (everything about the show) until I went there and lived there. It encapsulates something Americans don’t always celebrate but do value…a caring community.” NCL

Hogs I Have Known Personally STORY by LYNN COFFEY Here in the Blue Ridge, the early winter months mark the time people traditionally butcher the hogs they have been feeding since spring. Hogs have been kept on the homestead ever since people inhabited these mountains. In earlier years, when the chestnut trees were still bearing, hogs were let out to free range so they could fatten on the multitude of nuts falling from the trees. When folks asked how we could kill the animals we had kept from spring until fall I always answered, “Here’s the deal: We feed the pig for six months and the pig feeds us for six months!” For anyone who has kept swine, they know that a cute weanling pig soon turns into a large hog that grows and grows and GROWS! But hogs are one of the most curious, social and intelligent animals on the farm. My first encounter with hogs came in my 10th grade agriculture class. Each student had to have an animal project to raise during the year and sell at the end of the term. Most of the boys

16 NELSON COUNTY LIFE NOVEMBER 2012

chose steers but I zeroed in on a purebred Hampshire pig I named “Zeke” that was bought with babysitting money. My dad helped me build a pen and soon Zeke became so tame that most days I let him out to graze with the cows. One whistle at feeding time was all it took for him to come barreling across the pasture, snorting his way to the wooden trough where I fed him. On the weekend I’d sneak my mother’s Prell shampoo and give Zeke a bath. I’d scratch his soft belly and he’d plop over on his side, grunting in piggy ecstasy. Hog heaven, so to speak. I sold him for a whopping $35.00 to the farmer bordering the Ag farm and thought I’d struck it rich. Emboldened by my sudden financial gain, the next year I bought two Spotted Poland-China pigs and raised them up to the optimum 240 pounds apiece. The evening before I was to sell them I perched on the pig pen admiring their looks. Apparently someone else had taken notice of their good looks, too, because in the morning the only thing left in the pen was a swinging gate and a fuming sixteen year old girl. I never caught the swine thief and questioning the Ag boys was a useless endeavor which only resulted in snickering behind my back. The next year I got wiser and bought a combination lock for the gate, thus insuring sales profit in my senior year. A span of fifteen years was between me and my next big pig adventure and my affection for the animals must have rubbed off on my young daughter because when we moved to the mountains Heather decided to raise some piglets of her own. “Millie” was bought as a tiny weanling and became part of the family until she reached vast proportions. She had a sweet temperament and loved Heather without reserve, following her around like a puppy. Some years later we decided to go “whole hog” (so to speak) and keep a large herd of swine. By then Heather was a perpetually embarrassed teenager who would beg me not to be in the field with the animals when the school bus came up the mountain. So it was a good thing the bus was not on its daily run when I trudged out to feed the hogs one particular afternoon. With two five-gallon buckets full of garden produce, I stepped inside the fence to spread it on the ground for them but before I could empty them, twenty-five hogs surrounded me, trying to nose the buckets. Suddenly I lost my footing and fell, still holding the buckets aloft. The next thing I knew, the hogs, packed tightly together, stampeded across the field with me lying across their combined backs still holding the buckets in the air. I must have traveled a good fifty feet in this hilarious manner before the sea of swine parted and I fell through the cracks. Hitting the dirt, the porkers were upon the tomatoes, cukes, squash and me, squealing with delight at the food frenzy that had ensued. All I could do was laugh and try to regain my composure along with my balance and head home for a shower. When I told Heather, she was eternally grateful the pig fiasco didn’t happen on her watch so her peers didn’t think we were any weirder than we were. After that incident, we gave up raising our own hogs and started buying ham and tenderloin from a neighbor down the road who butchered each fall. But I continue to have a special fondness for the porkers that provided many days of entertainment ... and sausage! NCL

moneywise By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County The Eleventh Hour Congress seems to love Eleventh Hour “fixes”. On this list, is the annual legislation to “fix” the problems with the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). So, what is AMT? The AMT is the federal flat tax. It was created in 1969 to prevent the super-rich from avoiding taxes with the use of special deductions. The calculation starts with regular taxable income and adds back or adjusts certain deductions. If the calculated amount exceeds the AMT annual exemption, you will pay the tax. So, I’m not super-rich – why does it matter to me? Unlike other exemptions, the AMT exemption is not adjusted annually for inflation. Without a fix this year, married couples with AMT income exceeding $45,000 will pay the tax. Taxpayers most likely to be affected by AMT include those with child tax credits, work related expenses, taxes and medical deductions. Other deductions that are modified or adjusted for AMT purposes include depreciation expenses for business assets, certain types of tax exempt interest, and inter-

est paid on certain home equity loans. So, what can I do? This is America’s flat tax, and it can’t be avoided. More taxpayers are hit by it every year. So far, Congress has passed legislation each year that prevents most low and middle income taxpayers from paying the tax. But, we never know until the Eleventh Hour, what the fix will be – which makes tax planning difficult. The AMT creates additional complexity for taxpayers. If you are subject to the tax, there are adjustments that can be made when filing that might reduce the impact. If you are completing your returns manually or with basic tax preparation software, you may not be aware of these adjustments and consulting a professional might provide some relief. The AMT also increases the federal spending by increasing training and examination expenses of the IRS. In addition, each tax form and schedule mandated by Congress must be designed by programming staff, with appropriate instructions developed, and then incorporated into their database system.

The AMT creates additional costs for tax preparers by increasing tax program costs and preparation time. These costs, of course, are passed on to taxpayers in the form of higher fees. Obviously, the long term answer to the problem is Tax Reform – not ongoing Eleventh Hour legislation. A flatter tax with fewer overall preferences would simplify our tax system and eliminate the need for the AMT (and other equally ridiculous tax provisions) altogether. Let’s hope that the 113th Congress will take this seriously. The Eleventh Hour, the title for this article, also has another, very important meaning. The end of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I officially occurred on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Veterans Day occurs this year and every year on November 11th. Veterans Day 2012 has a special meaning for me. 16 years and 5 months ago, my older son volunteered to serve our country. November 11, 2012 will be his final day of active duty. Thanks Christopher - job well done.

A real estate market update for Nelson County

Woo-hoo! According to the most recent Charlottesville Area Association of Realtors (CAAR) market report Nelson County real estate is headed in the right direction. Overall sales in the Greater Charlottesville area (Charlottesville and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Orange, and Nelson) are up 23% when compared to the 3rd quarter of 2011 and Nelson experienced the highest percentage of growth of any of the CAAR areas. Nelson was also one of the few counties to experience an increase in median price with a 25% gain from 2nd quarter 2012. Recent occurrences in the area may have influenced the positive movement. In late June the acquisition of Wintergreen Resort by the Justice family, owners of Greenbrier Resort, was approved. As a result of the transition of ownership, a great deal of capital, more than 12 million dollars, is being invested in facility and infrastructure improvements. There is no doubt that this renewed focus on

Wintergreen has had and will continue to have a positive impact on our real estate market. However, I am hesitant to proclaim a major market victory because year to date figures are not as positive as the most recent quarterly statistics. Here is a broader analysis of the Nelson County real estate market. Nelson County 3rd Quarter (Q3) 2011/2012 Residential Sales Comparison Q3 Synopsis: In comparing Q3 2012 with Q3 2011, the 2012 market improved on all accounts. More homes sold (67% increase) at a higher average price (12% increase) and at a higher median price (25% increase). While the number of sales and price increased, the time it took to sell a property decreased by 24% from 263 to 201 days on market (DOM). The greatest growth was in resort sales with a 74% growth. County homes or non-resort homes saw a 50% increase in sales. Nelson County Year to Date

(YTD) Q1-Q3 2011/2012 Residential Sales Comparison Q1-Q3 2011; 120 homes sold at an average price of $288,350, price per sq ft of $146.89, median price of $226,500, and DOM of 189. A total of 69 homes sold within Wintergreen Resort on the mountain and in the valley. Specifically in the Wintergreen Mountain Village, 31 detached homes and 28 condos sold. In the valley within Stoney Creek at Wintergreen, a total of 10 homes sold. Within the county, excluding all resort homes, a total of 51 homes sold from Q1 thru Q3. Q1-Q3 2012; 116 homes sold at an average price of $251,373, price per sq ft of $136.79, median of $230,950, and DOM of 208. A total of 75 homes sold within Wintergreen Resort on the mountain and in the valley. Specifically in the Wintergreen Mountain Village, 29 detached homes and 35 condos sold. In the valley within Stoney Creek at Wintergreen, a total of 11 homes sold. Within the county, excluding all resort

homes, a total of 41 homes sold from Q1 thru Q3. Q1-Q3 Synopsis: Countywide, including resort and non-resort sales, fewer homes have sold (3% less) in 2012 compared to the same time period in 2011. The average price has decreased (13%), while the median has increased (2%). The days on market has increased from 189 in 2011 to 208 in 2012. Overall sales at Wintergreen increased by 9% predominantly due to condo sales which increased by 25%. While the overall Wintergreen market improved, non-resort sales have declined by 24%. Stepables For quite some time, I have experimented with methods to dress up ‘dry lay’ patios with plantings between the stones that could survive the foot traffic. These plants have to be able to withstand light to heavy traffic (depending on their location in the landscape) and, in most cases, drought. Although there are several specific plants for similar strategies, a company out of the Pacific Northwest has already done the homework for us by assembling a group of plants that are known and grown for this exact application. The premise is that the walking acts as a pruning agent for the plant, thereby forcing it to re-root at the point where it was broken off. Basically the more the traffic they receive, the better fill-in and ‘lusher’ growth that they attain. After much research, I have been introduced to a whole new method of not only adding interest to a walkway or patio, but also potentially establishing a small ‘lawn’ of these plants in unique areas of landscape – the approach to a patio, an area surrounding a water feature, a shady spot that won’t grow grass, etc. This selection of vigorous low growing (only 1-2 inches tall max) perennials includes plant varieties that can envelope areas in very short time due to the nature of the plants used. As a bonus to their nature, these plants control the growth of non-desirables (weeds) in the locations that they are planted and some of the varieties even bloom. They are called ‘Stepables’ (www.stepables.com) and at Saunders Landscapes we intend to not only use them in our landscaping, but grow them here at the nursery. of Stepables available allows us to create either a solid mat of one type of plant, or, better yet, to create an amorphous, non-linear grouping of plants in random fashion. The end result is blooms and unique groupings of foliage scattered all across the walk and patio – easily able to withstand traffic and daily wear. Establishment is best in early spring or fall. Once they are planted, it is best to allow them 2 weeks or so of limited traffic to get established. That shady area that seems to be an eye-sore (since grass just won’t seem to grow) every year has a new weapon. These plants create a mat of dense, drought tolerant foliage that hugs the ground and eliminates the need for grass. The best part about this is that we can get deep green colors in them allowing a continuation of the yard look into this shade area. As a bonus, most of these items bloom. Obviously proper soil preparation is needed in order to assure success. Stepables also offers groups of plants can also be planted in sunny areas in the lawn, creating a deep green, maroon or other color ‘carpet’ to accent a specific area. Parts of the landscape that we target are near patios, hardscapes (a retaining wall, patio, etc.) and at the end of a ‘cul-de-sac’ type of area in the lawn. Imagine the look of an area in your lawn that maintains a very low profile, that can be walked on AND blooms. Again, depending on the soil and site selection involved, there are literally dozens of plants to choose from. One important part about this is that since they are snugged up against fescue, there are specific chemicals to target and kill only the grass and equal chemicals to control the movement of the ‘Stepables’ into the lawn. Overall you get a very unique look in an otherwise humdrum area of the lawn.

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, My father had an aneurysm in his stomach. How do I find out if I have one? An abdominal aortic aneurysm, or AAA, is when the large blood vessel in your abdomen gets abnormally large. Aneurysms develop slowly over years and usually have no symptoms. The larger an aneurysm, the more likely it is to rupture. Symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm include pain in the abdomen or back, clammy skin, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, rapid heart rate and shock. Less than 80% of people survive a ruptured abdominal aneurysm. The goal is to find an aneurysm before it ruptures. An abdominal aortic aneurysm can develop in anyone, but is most often seen in males over age 60 with risk factors. These include emphysema, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and smoking. Having a family member with an aneurysm increases the risk of having one. Many abdominal aneurysms are found incidentally, such as during a test for another reason. They might

be found during a routine physical exam when a pulsating mass is noted in the abdomen. People at high risk should be sent for an ultrasound of the aorta. It is recommended that anyone over 65 who smoked at any time in their life be screened once. To reduce the risk of developing aneurysms you should make healthy food choices, exercise regularly, stop smoking and lower your blood pressure and cholesterol if they are elevated. If the aneurysm is small it may not need to be fixed, but you will need to have the aneurysm monitored to check for growth. If the aneurysm is growing quickly, or is bigger than 5.5 cm surgery will likely be indicated. The outcome is usually very good when an aneurysm is repaired before it ruptures. If you have a family history of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, or are over 65 and have ever smoked, be sure to see your doctor to discuss screening. Tripping Over Our Toes We’ve all done it. Walking along and unexpectedly, the toe of our shoe catches on something and we trip, possibly catching ourselves and regaining our balance or worse, falling on our face. Then we quickly look around to see if anyone saw us. We might catch the toe on a curb, a step, the carpet or just the ground. Usually, it is not a graceful loss of balance and can lead to a serious injury. There are a few scenarios that could be occurring. You may not be lifting up your foot high enough to clear the ground when taking a step. The knee may not be bending enough when you swing your leg forward. Perhaps, you are shuffling your feet and taking small steps when you walk. Or your ankle joint is not bending upward fast enough for the foot to clear the ground from the point you lift the foot off the ground to the moment you place it in front of you. The research reveals that if you walk with a shuffling pattern, you tend to fall more frequently than others. If you walk at a very slow pace,

you may also be at risk for falls. These are signs of weakness and loss of flexibility in the legs. They are also signs of a decrease in confidence in your walking ability; when you lose your confidence in walking, there is a good likelihood that you will become more sedentary, thus becoming weaker, which leads to loss of function and a decline in the quality of life. There are easy tips that you can try. Pay attention to your walking as you walk. If you simply pay attention to lifting each foot up and taking a step, research shows there will be a decreased risk for falls. It also means you shouldn’t walk and talk at the same time because talking can be a distraction and you may not see that curb. Be aware of your surroundings. Inside the home, ensure that there is adequate lighting especially on stairs. Use a cane if you are a little wobbly walking. There are many factors that lead to good balance which I’ll discuss in future articles; this is a good place to begin.

For the last 29 years, students at North Branch School in Afton have presented the mummers’ play St. George the Dragon in December. The dragon was made by former North Branch parent, Rowena Olwell, of shiny turquoise and black material that shimmers on stage. Every year, it needs a little bit of TLC, which is what the students in Primary II Class (ages 7-8) are providing. Working with North Branch teacher and alumna, Genevieve Dennis, the group put their newly acquired finger knitting skills to good use as they created new yarn hair for the giant, who was looking a little thin on top. The Rockfish Valley Community Center will be holding two shows December 21, one at 1:30 pm and the second at 7 pm.

“I was in the best shape of my life, and then 10 years went by,” Tammy said. During the break, Karen had sold her previous gym, Five Star Health and Fitness, and had taken a break of her own before re-emerging at RVCC. “I was very nervous because I had gained a lot of weight over the past 10 years. Karen made me feel very comfortable. It just felt right to be back in the class.” Carolyn Fraham of Nellysford just started attending the classes and has no plans on stopping. “I have learned over the years I can’t do it on my own. Karen makes it fun. I feel energetic and I feel great after the class,” she said. Denise Harvey, a longtime client of Karen’s, is game for the butt kickin’. To say she was sore after her first class, is an understatement. “I was whooped! I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I really found out how out of shape I was. Now my goal is to be stronger than my 13-year-old son.” And she’s getting there. NCL

Back when Room 10 was a classroom in what used to be the Rockfish Valley Elementary School, you probably would have gotten in trouble for jumping and moving about. Now a newly renovated fitness room at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, the only moment you get to sit still is during cooldown. “RVCC has incredible energy. I love it here,” says Karen Cooke, owner of Core Fitness Synergy. “I loved the opportunity to bring this program here to the community. When I started back in this practice, I wanted to be able to offer something to the community at a cost effective rate, still using the skills that I have.” Cooke entered the fitness industry after coaching gymnastics. In those days – some 35 years ago – instructors wore big hair and tiny leotards. That’s when she met Nelson County native Karen Rogers while working at Piedmont Virginia Community College. Rogers was the reason Cooke moved to Nelson County and ironically, one of the places she taught classes was here, at the old elementary school. “When I started these programs here at the RVCC, Karen came here with me. It’s been a wonderful journey to be with her throughout this whole path,” Cooke said. “The energy. The people. I love the people,” said Rita Chatman of Stoney Creek who began taking Core Fusion classes in the spring. Since then, she’s added CoreFit and a Zumba class to her schedule, effectively ending a 6-year hiatus from working out. “I just feel overall better mentally and physically.” A familiar face to those who get their hair cut at Beech Grove Salon, stylist Tammy Huffman’s history working out with Karen began more than a decade ago.

Move over Jacki Sorenson and Jane Fonda. Core Fitness Synergy owner Karen Cooke may no longer rock a leotard (below) but she’s still making people sweat inside a newly renovated fitness room at the Rockfish Valley Community Center. The timing was right for Mary Coy’s chance discovery of Spine – a play by British playwright Clara Brennan – which will be performed at the Nelson Memorial Library in Lovingston Tuesday, November 13 at 7 pm. Coy, an actress and drama teacher, is directing the piece. The play is about a young girl and her growing awareness of poverty and suffering through her relationship with an elderly woman who loves the public library. Our very own Marcie Gates gets to play that young girl. Because of the play’s strong language and one sexual reference, Coy says parents probably wouldn’t want to take children younger than 12 to the show. Though admission to the play is free, donations to the library are welcome. A discussion about the local library system follows the performance. NCL

Rick Miller of Logs to Lumber has never been one to simply throw another log on the fire. Instead, he teaches with it. “I’ve been teaching, in this format, for about three years through the community college in Charlottesville,” said Rick, speaking of Piedmont Virginia Community College. “People are coming in and they’re learning to draw their imagination, or designs, so to speak. We’re starting with unfinished lumber, and we’re dressing and dimensioning everything. So, they’re learning about machinery, they’re learning about the design, learning about joinery. They are finishing these projects, so that when they are done, they’ll have a piece that they will have at their home. Teaching gave me a chance to revitalize what I had spent so much of my life doing. So, this has been a ball; having new people enjoying and seeing a dream.” When Rick’s not living out his own dream, he’s helping someone else create theirs. “Gail Hobbs-Page recently approached me about this project that they were doing as a promotion for her farm,” said Rick, referring to Esmontbased Caromont Farm and Creamery. “She needed a cutting board for a little package that she was going to be shipping to people that were interested in the project.” “There is an internet site, KickStarter.com, that is a way to alternatively fund creative projects, and they just added a new category for food,” explained Gail, one of the owners and cheese makers at Caromont. “You put together an incentive package, so when people donate, you send them this package. The boards were part of a package; a board, two pieces of cheese, and an insulated cooler with Caromont Farm on it. Rick totally got the mission behind the project. He got the idea that they were meaningful to the people he was making them for.”

This little package was no small feat, but having worked with wood since 1997 out of his shop in Faber, Rick knew just what to do. “We got together wood that would be considered scant, or a little bit thin, for normal furniture work,” Rick explained. “We took a mixture of sassafras, ash, cedar and some cherry. And we just started cutting out all these weird little shapes. And she wanted a hole in it, so we drilled a hole in them, and we’ve sanded them and saturated them in a mineral oil, to make them food safe.” Although the project only started a few months ago, the reaction has been quite positive, resulting in the need for a bigger order. “We originally talked about sixty or so boards, and now we’re at about a hundred and ten,” said Rick proudly. “We’ve finished with the initial order, but we’ve had a lot of requests to do these cutting boards. So, it looks like there’s potential to keep the product moving.” Having worked with Gail on projects in the past, Rick is happy to further their working relationship. “When people have that connection, like Gail does, to their projects; that’s where I gravitate,” said Rick. And Gail is more than happy to provide business and encouragement for Rick’s local trade as well. “We are a local producer,” said Gail, “So we try to support other local producers. If this is who we are, in this stand that we are taking in our community, then these are our choices. We’ve known each other for a long time, and he’s done several small projects here, but mostly repairs. Now he has sort of found his calling. He’s a creator. There’s even a pizza named after him at Dr. Ho’s - now that’s local.* He’s a real treasure. I wish more people knew about him. Now maybe they will.” NCL

That particular pie isn’t currently available, but when it is, it’s topped with walnuts, figs, mozzarella, bacon, blue cheese and a balsamic glaze!
