from thepublishers Though it’s been several weeks since we spent a week at our undisclosed location on the Chesapeake Bay, Adam keeps talking about it. “Let’s put on swim trunks, go to the bay and play in the water. And then take a nap under the fan.” He apparently didn’t mind getting stung on his stomach by the jelly fish. When it happened, he looked up at me from the waves and said, “I hurt myself!” and turned his head to his side. Sure enough, a mild rash appeared and before I could look at it more closely, Adam had seized his body board and jumped back into the water. That’s my boy. Not my girl. Little Miss Peyton, as we are beginning to refer to her, would have nothing to do with the gentle crashing waves, much less subject her body to the tentacles of a jelly fish. We take a roll out beach mat with us and that is where she stayed. Perched on a collapsible beach chair, in the shade of an umbrella, listening to the marine traffic on daddy’s scanner. One morning, Adam found several washed up crabs on the shore and began piling them on Peyton’s beach mat. Shooting him a skeptical glare from beneath those boing boing curls, Peyton observed her wild
brother and decided his activity was benign. She then went back to turning knobs and pressing buttons on the scanner, jumping from channel to channel. Tired of his body board, Adam grabs a sand castle bucket and starts collecting water for a pond. By chance, he catches a small jelly fish! “That’s what stung you!” I told him. We pour out the offender onto the sand and watch his body transform from elegant dancing prehistoric sea creature, to a gelatinous blob of venom. We bury him under a sand castle, and mark it with a crab claw. Now, to take a nap under the fan. Enjoy! Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Catching the Heart “There are many things will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.” In the language of books this might mean judging not from cover but content. In the world of wine I think it translates to forgetting what clever label adorns the bottle and learning to judge wines not only by how they taste and appeal to our senses, but also how they stand up over time and how the winemaker treats the earth without which there’d be no vine. I call certain wines, which are made sustainably and taste delicious, with layers of complexity that often evolve over the course of an evening or sometimes days, my ‘heart wines.’ It’s true that wine in moderation, especially red wine, is excellent medicine for our hearts, but what I mean by my heart wine goes beyond the medicinal to something more metaphorical, and beyond the physical to something much less tangible… that something that must be felt with the heart. Your heart wines will be different from my heart wines, but what matters is that they stir something deep within you and you feel a little bit more spontane-
ous, a little bit more sensuous and a whole lot more loving. You’ll want to share these special wines and good feelings with your friends! The love and attention that quality producers put into their wine as well as the way in which they treat the earth translates itself into the overall experience we receive from the wine. So look for wines that are made sustainably, producers who work in harmony with the earth not dumping down chemicals for maximum short-term yield. White: Moulin de Gassac, Guilhem, 2010 – As I write the temperature is 101 in the shade. I hope upon press time temps have dropped, but either way this is a wine in which to rejoice. This is the somewhat unorthodox, delicious and affordable bottling from the famous Mas de Daumas Gassac in the Languedoc. Daumas Gassac uses organic viticulture practices and has in the short thirty-some years it’s been producing become a kind of cult wine. Each year the blends differ. The 2010 is a blend of Grenache Blanche, Sauvignon Blanc and Clairette. Look for notes of fresh apples and pears combined with layers of citrus, backed

by mineral. $12 Rosé: Mas de Gourgonnier, 2011 – This rich rosé comes from another excellent organic producer in the south, this time in Les Baux de Provence. I have never tasted a wine from Les Baux I didn’t like, and this is no exception. Drive in the long drive and to one side are gnarled old olive trees, apricot trees and on the other side rows of vines. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault, it’s a rosé full-bodied enough to stand up to light meats, pastas, quiches and cheese. Orange blossom, raspberry nose and beautiful acidity. $18 Red: La Stoppa, Macchiona, 2007 – Perhaps more of a fall/winter red, but as one of my wine tasters said after I’d been featuring lighter reds, whites and rosés, “We do have airconditioning.” All of the wines from La Stoppa qualify as my heart wines, but the Macchiona, a blend of Barbera and Bonarda, is my favourite. Awoken from years of dormancy, the mill wheel in Lowesville spins once again. By definition, that’s called

First, there were veggies. Then fruits and meats and wine and beer. But the newest part of the local and organic food movement is actually one of the oldest forms of sustenance: grains. “It works really well because people have a desire today to have food that’s locally grown, but some food has to be processed. This is, essentially, a historic way of processing something,” said Will Brockenbrough, who, with his wife Sarah, is the newest owner of the historic Woodson’s Mill in Lowesville. “We use no nonrenewable resources in order to process this food; it’s not shipped great distances. Sometimes there is packaged food that you need – but it doesn’t have to come from far away.”

Sometimes there is packaged food that you need – but it doesn’t have to come from far away.” Woodson’s Mill re-opened its doors after its second extended closure in more than 200 years on June 30, 2012. Originally built (As Piney River Mill) by Guiliford Campbell in 1794, it was purchased by Dr. Julian Belmont Woodson in the early 1900s. Under Woodson’s ownership, the mill was used both as a mill and as a business and social hub in Nelson County. Finally, before Will and Sarah, the mill was actively run by Will’s father, Gill Brockenbrough from 1984 until he passed away in 2001. The only other time the mill’s grinding wheel stopped turning was after Hurricane Camille in 1969.

The water-powered mill is producing whole wheat flour, stone ground grits, and both white and yellow cornmeal.
“It’s great because you see corn and then 15 minutes later, it’s grits and cornmeal,” said Sarah, who is originally from Georgia and currently back in school – seminary school. “It happens right there in front of you – there’s nothing added to it and there’s nothing changed about it and it smells great and it tastes completely different. I love the idea that this is one of those instances in which this very old way of doing things connects with our very contemporary understanding of what we need – of stewardship, of being good to the earth, being kind to our bodies, and doing the right thing.” NCL
Will and Sarah, who both have graduate degrees in historic preservation, moved to Nelson (Will is originally from Norfolk) after Will inherited the mill and started thinking about what to do with the place. Just like he helped Will’s father, Gill, get the mill up and running in the 1980s, Nelson local Steve Roberts was around to help Will when he needed it – the Brockenbroughs said there was a lot of cleaning to do, not to mention figuring out how to run a business. All the while, though, it was very important to them to make sure that the mill was not only a historic location, but an active place. “Every historic building needs a use in order to be viable and the best use for the mill is for it to continue being a mill,” said Will. “Part of that liability is that it needs to find a way to support itself as it were – so if we can sell our product, which is locally grown corn and wheat milled in a historic and completely sustainable manner (everything is water powered), then we can connect people not only with the history and preservation of the building, but also the local food movement that’s going on as well as the historic nature of the food itself.” Right now, Woodson’s Mill is using all historic ways of making – and modern ways of marketing! – their three products: whole wheat flour, stone ground grits, and cornmeal (white and yellow). Visitors are welcome to come see the mill, which Will imagines looks the same way it did 100 years ago, and make purchases in person on Saturdays or buy online at www.woodsonsmill.com. Sarah encourages people to come take a look at the mill, though – she said the experience is unlike any other.

Known to cyclists around the world as “The Cookie Lady”, June Curry passed away July 16, 2012 at the age of 91. She began caring for weary cyclists in her native Afton Mountain more than 30 years ago. Not far from US Bike Route 76, a nearby building known as “The Bike House” became a shelter for cyclists and is today filled with bicycle memorabilia. It has become a shrine to the sport and to one of its angels. She will be missed.

Nelson County is getting to be known for lots of things – wine, beer, hiking and skiing are just a few. But the music of central Virginia has just as strong of a hold – and a longer history, too. Bluegrass and old-time music have been a staple of the area for more than a century, gaining more and more fans as the decades went on. “My interest in the music goes back to my days in high school in the late 1950s,” said Blue Ridge Mountain Music Festival co-organizer Don Burland. “I’ve been interested ever since.” So seven years ago, Don and Jimbo Cary started the festival, which is
run by Wintergreen Performing Arts to promote its love of bluegrass and old-time music. This year’s festival features Nelson County Life’s very own Tommy Stafford as the emcee (for five years running!) and a number of stellar musicians: Nothin’ Fancy, The Steel Wheels, The Virginia Ramblers (pictured above) and Pete and Ellen Vigour with Kim and Jimbo Cary. The festival will go from noon to 7 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the Evans Center at Wintergreen Resort with jamming breakouts throughout the day. The Grandma Tree STORY by LYNN COFFEY
One morning while visiting my down-the-road neighbor, Vanessa Fraser, I commented on a sapling growing in a large container on her porch. She laughed and said, “Oh, that’s the Grandma Tree.” As the story unfolded I was struck at what a triumph of survival and persistence on both the little oak and the woman who planted its part. Vanessa’s grandmother, Thelma Withrow, always had a green thumb and could identify all the wildflowers and trees in her native state of Ohio. When Thelma passed away in 2002 the family was attending her funeral and the day after decided to take the children to the Cleveland Zoo. Noticing some oversize acorns on the ground, Vanessa picked up three and tucked them in her purse. Returning

Pharsalia to their home in Melbourne, Florida, the acorns were placed on top of a dresser and for a long while, forgotten. On a whim, Vanessa decided to plant the nuts in containers to see if they would grow. Two of the three came up but in the end only one began to grow and flourish under Vanessa’s tender care. Soon the tiny tree outgrew its container and had to be repotted in a larger one. In the fall of 2003, the Frasers began noticing the tree was losing its leaves and thought it had died but Vanessa continued to water it nevertheless. It never occurred to them that the oak, although growing in Florida, was still on “up-north” time and knew it was supposed to drop its leaves and go dormant for the winter. Sure enough, the next spring the tree sprouted a new set of foliage. In 2005 the Frasers moved to North Carolina and the Grandma Tree went with them. It was brought inside the house over the winter and transplanted in a larger pot as the weather warmed in spring. By this time the oak was somewhat larger and when another move to Rhode Island happened, you guessed it ... “Grandma” went along. Because of the cooler northern weather, the oak was relocated from the deck to the dining room and remained there until 2006 when the Frasers made a move south to Vinton, Virginia. James is employed in the maintenance department of the Blue Ridge Parkway and his job required yet another move in 2009; this time to the mountain hamlet of Love, Virginia, and that is how we became neighbors. Vanessa humorously calls the winter of 2009, “Snowpocalypse” which is a perfect way to describe one of the worst winters we’ve had in ten years. By this time, “Grandma” had grown to a height of five feet or more and Vanessa deemed the mighty oak needed to be permanently planted and not just repotted. They asked if we would consider being the tree’s foster parents if we could find a suitable place to plant. That way, the oak could spread out and grow mightier in years to come and the Frasers would always be welcome to visit if another move was in their future. We found the perfect spot; away from the shade and danger of other trees, out in the middle of a field where sunshine and rain would help it grow tall. We all gathered at “Grandma’s” final resting spot and placed her root ball in the hole, watered her thoroughly and said a prayer that her Ohio roots would grow deep into the Virginia soil so that the old adage, “Tall trees from little acorns grow” will prove true … NCL Lynn is once again looking for a few remaining copies of her Backroads magazine that was published for 25 years. In a very exciting and honorable request, The Folk Life Center at The Smithsonian has requested an entire set from beginning to end. moneywise By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Derechos and Other Disasters I must admit I’m in the majority of the population that had never heard of a derecho until last month. As I write this, my spell check doesn’t even recognize the word. At any rate, I wish we had never heard of it! Summer storms and other natural disasters can be costly. Most of the cost is not covered by typical homeowners’ policies. However, if you had significant damage, your losses may meet the IRS requirements for a casualty loss deduction. A deduction is allowed for casualty losses resulting from a single event that is sudden or unusual – this would include most storms, such as derechos. On the other hand, if your house was progressively damaged by insects, this would not qualify. The most challenging part of claiming a casualty loss deduction is calculating the amount of the loss. The general rule is that you must determine the reduction in fair market value. This might be relatively easy in a few cases – if the derecho wiped out your barn, you should be able to deter-
mine the fair market value of the barn from the value of similar structures. Unfortunately, most uninsured storm damage consists of damage to landscaping and trees. Determining their fair market value is difficult, but the IRS will permit you to use the cost of restoring landscaping including the cost of tree and debris removal, pruning and other measures taken to preserve damaged trees and shrubs, and replanting necessary to restore the property to its approximate value before the casualty. You will want to document the loss with photographs and other relevant information – in most cases, you will want to have before and after photos showing the damage. Invoices for cleanup and repair work should be saved as well. Once you determine the amount of the loss, the next step is to determine the deductible portion. In general, the uninsured loss from each event must exceed $100. After adding up all of your deductible losses for the year, you must reduce this amount by 10
percent of your gross income. It is this last requirement that eliminates the tax benefit for most taxpayers. On occasion, Congress has provided relief for taxpayers from the 10 percent rule. It is possible that even our election-year representatives will consider such a provision for the June storms. Therefore, if you have a deductible loss that is less than the 10 percent threshold, I would still retain the documentation in the event that such legislation is passed. Casualty loss deduction rules are very complex. And, the rules related to losses on your rental property or other business property are different from the personal casualty losses that I have summarized here. If you have sustained a casualty loss, your first point of contact should be your insurance agent who will advise you of your coverage and how to handle any claims. Your next point of contact should be your tax advisor who can assist in determining what documentation might be needed to claim a deductible casualty loss.

There continue to be ups and downs in the Nelson County real estate market; here is a midyear summary. (Even though part of Wintergreen is in Augusta County, stats were only pulled for Nelson from Jan. thru June of 2012.) Land Countywide Summary; 28 parcels of land sold countywide. That is up from 23 parcels sold by midyear 2011. Countywide inventory is lower; there are currently 264 active land listings as compared to 287 this time last year. Wintergreen (Mountain); 7 lots sold at a median of $59,000. This is an increase over 2011 when 4 lots sold at a median of $40,250. The median in 2010 was $122,500. There are more lots for sale with 50 lots for sale at a median asking price of $89,250. Stoney Creek; 2 lots have sold compared to 3 in midyear 2011. Fewer lots have sold, and the price has also fallen to a median of
$54,000 compared to $95,000 in 2011. There are fewer lots for sale with 66 parcels currently for sale at a median of $88,000 compared to 73 in 2011 at a median of $105,000. County Properties (excluding Wintergreen & Stoney Creek); 19 parcels of land sold; the number of sales and price per acre remain relatively unchanged from midyear 2011. Residential Residential Countywide Summary; 71 homes have sold at an average price of $241,673 ($133 sq ft), median of $220,000, and average days on market (DOM) of 212; 4 of these properties sold for more than $500,000 while 33 sold for under $200,000. Midyear 2011, 92 homes had sold at an average price of $307,120 ($155 sq ft), median of $256,000 and DOM of 168. There is currently less inventory with 317 homes for sale (compared to 365 in 2011) at an average asking price of $389,160 ($183 sq ft) and DOM of 253. Attached Homes (Condos/Town-
houses); Improvements exhibited with 21 sold at an average price of $210,587 ($163 sq ft), median of $186,000 and DOM of 176. Midyear 2011, 18 sold at a median of $155,000. There are 100 condos available at an average asking price of $197,366 ($178 sq ft) and a median of $162,000. (Average price in 2011 was $232,399.) Wintergreen Detached Homes; 16 homes have sold at an average price of $347,219 ($156 sq ft), median of $329,000 and DOM of 321. Midyear 2011, 26 homes sold at a median of $383,750. There are 74 active homes with an average asking price of $501,807 ($201 sq ft), and a median of $447,000. Stoney Creek Detached Homes; 5 homes sold in 2012 compared to 6 in midyear 2011; historically the first half of the year is slower in SC than the second half. The median price has dropped from $397,250 in 2011 to $365,000 in 2012. There is less inventory with 37 homes for
sale at an average asking price of $583,005 ($188 sq ft) and a median of $479,000. (47 were for sale in 2011 with a median of $489,000.) County Detached Homes (excluding Wintergreen & Stoney Creek); 29 homes have sold compared to 42 in midyear 2011. Only 1 home sold for more than $400,000. The sold median for 2012 is $175,000 compared to $216,000 in 2011. There are fewer homes for sale with 106 homes listed at a median of $282,400. The Other Color, Green I am as guilty as the next person regarding blooms and their absolute necessity in the garden. Garden centers and nurseries (including Saunders Landscapes) have coined the phrase, ‘Color Sells’ – and indeed it does. However, within the plant kingdom resides a whole host of shade plants that do not offer the first hint of a bloom and provide me with a sea of tranquility on a hot summer’s day – the ferns. As with other plants, extensive breeding has produced many genera that different textures, heights and yes, even color (in the foliage). As with all ferns, water and shade are the key elements. Although they can stand on their own, designing with ferns is most effective when used in concert with other blooming and non-blooming genera. My favorite plants to use with ferns are an extensive list including hosta, variegated Solomon’s seal, impatiens, Aucuba, Hydrangea, Azalea, boxwood, vinca, Phlox stononlifera and Dicentra. The only real qualification is shade and moisture – at least a nice shot of water on a weekly basis to produce a thriving stand. From a hardscapes standpoint, installing large rocks with a mass of ferns around it is one of my favorite focal points/tactics with ferns since they fit the motif so well. When planting ferns, ‘think forest’ – deep, rich compost from years and years of leaves falling to the forest floor and decaying. Your recipe should include deep digging to loosen the soil, along with mixing in a nice shot of compost, high grade topsoil, peat moss and an organic fertilizer. If you wish for your ferns to colonize, it is best to use compost in lieu of heavy mulch. Without a doubt my favorite is the Japanese Beech Fern. This fern grows to around 15-18 inches
and offers a deep, rich green color. Although it is not an evergreen, it has shown, in both my landscape and those that we have installed, a tendency to colonize into a large mass of green. The Five Finger Fern is an airy fern that has 5, finger-like fronds that branch off of a single black stem at about 12-15 inches or so. The effect is a ‘limbed up’ fern with no foliage until the very top. Keep these guys on the moist side as they tend to like consistent moisture. Although I do not use this fern often, the Japanese Painted Fern brings color to the table with its maroon stems and inner fronds that move to a smoky-white at the very tips. Growing to 14-16 inches, they offer a nice contrast with other ferns and with other perennial genera – in particular rose, pink and white blooming plants. Moisture levels for Japanese Painted Fern are medium to moist. How can you talk about ferns without mentioning the great Interrupted Fern? These stalwarts of the garden grow tall and, well, consider them like planting an oak tree in your yard for future generations (and you) to enjoy for years and years to come. Growing 2-4 feet in height, Interrupted ferns take their place near the back of the border and form nice clumps over the years. Once established, these ferns are pretty much drought tolerant. My last two favorites are Christmas and Cinnamon. Christmas is an evergreen and grows to around 12-16 inches or so and gets its name from the boot shaped fronds at the end of the stem. Christmas fern typically likes moderate moisture. The Cinnamon fern grows to over 3 feet (and larger if conditions are right) and is more of a true ‘rain forest’ fern requiring moist to wet conditions. Plant it near sink holes, creeks and other consistent water sources.

Of course, I am referring to exercise. Say (or write) that word, and those who already exercise say, “good!”; those that don’t probably mutter less kind four letter descriptive words. One does not have to run a marathon per day to gain the benefits listed above. “90 minutes of moderate exercise per week” is what the US Department of Health and Human Services says can bring about these amazing effects. I would argue that for the completely sedentary ANY activity over and above the current pattern is good! I have seen in my practice, right here in Nelson, people who have gotten off of medicines and cured disease such as diabetes and hypertension through the act of exercise. Summer Shoes Bring the Foot Blues With summer here, our foot wear changes. It’s too hot to wear socks or don our heavy shoes and so flip flops, sandals, crocs and slip on shoes are much easier to bear on our feet. It feels great to wiggle our toes and we are light on our feet. We may not don our lace up shoes until Autumn. And, because it is so stylish- we’ll endure the foot pain! There are many types of foot pain that increase in warmer weather. Plantar fasciitis, heel pain syndrome, Morton’s neuroma and bunions pain to name a few. We take approximately 10,000 steps a day and each time we step, there is 1.3 times our body weight that is placed on the foot and knee joints. That is a lot of pounding and a lot of repetitive weight bearing over the years. When the foot hits the ground first, it starts a chain reaction all the way up to the low back joints and muscles are activated so you can walk. If your alignment is off at the foot, it will be off at the knee, hip and low back. It will be altered each time
you take a step. Quality shoes with adequate support help the foot and ankle alignment. There are also over the counter shoes inserts or custom shoe inserts that help with foot alignment. However, if you are wearing thin flip flops or sandals, the chances of good alignment are slim and the chances of increased foot pain are high. As one who is completely flat footed (no arch), who has plantar fasciitis and who loves to go barefoot, I have found some strategies to manage the summer foot pain. First, don’t skimp on shoes. It is the first line of protection for your joints. There are increasingly better flip flops being made that have more shock absorption and arch support. They are not the $1.99 pair and do cost a bit. It is worth it. Some sandals can even accommodate your shoe inserts. Secondly, do not walk barefoot on wood, concrete or tile floors. If you have a favorite work spot in your kitchen or work shop, place a rug or thick rubber mat under your feet to

absorb shock. Thirdly, be sensible. If you know you are going shopping or standing on your feet all day- wear tennis shoes. Or, if you will be going to an event in the evening where you wish to wear sandals then wear your

Blue Mountain Brewery, an Afton staple, has expanded once more – and this time they’re a bit further down the road. Though they’ve been brewing and distributing bottled beer since April, on July 1, the Blue Mountain Barrel House opened its tasting room for the first time at the new brewery in Colleen. “It went great; we had two bands and … maybe 100 people in and out throughout the day,” said Blue Mountain Owner Taylor Smack, who took on the role of tour guide for the grand opening.

Taylor said that their opening date was chosen carefully – it coincided with SB604, signed by Governor McDonnell, which took effect on July 1. “Thanks to the governor passing SB604, you can enjoy full portions of beer [without a requirement from the seller to also sell food],” said Taylor. “So you can get a full pint of Full Nelson, [or] a goblet of Dark Hollow.” The cafe tables set up in the tasting room (which will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) will open up to the production factory. “So on Friday’s it’ll be loud and proud and you can watch guys on forklifts zipping around doing their thing and then on the weekends (when production is closed), it will be more of a brewery piece atmosphere.” Taylor said that even though Blue Mountain is expanding its distribution outside of Virginia, they’ll always know where their hearts are – and so will all of Blue Mountain Brewery’s newest fans. “All of our bottles tell a little story about Nelson County.” NCL

there are some great things that can be done in Nelson.” Justice, who coaches high school basketball and owns and manages several properties and farms in the mid-Atlantic, said that his primary goal is to get the resort standing on its own two feet. He wants to elongate the ski season and maybe one day create some kind of golf trail between the Glade Spring, Wintergreen, and the Greenbrier. Justice said he was drawn to Wintergreen for both business – he thinks there are ways for the other Justice Co resorts to work with Wintergreen – and personal reasons. “It’s one of the last places that I played golf with my dad,” said Jim, who played golf for the University of Tennessee and was the captain of the team at Marshall University. “We played there in a tournament. We played both courses and I honestly thought their mountain course was one of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever played and I’ve played a lot of golf.” NCL

Whether people are flocking to Nelson County and Wintergreen Resort for business reasons or for more personal ones, there’s one thing they all seem to agree on: “It’s a beautiful place,” said Justice Cos CEO Jim Justice, who recently purchased the resort for both business and personal reasons. “Its beauty is breathtaking.” Following a membership vote on Sunday, June 24, Wintergreen Resort is on track to move forward in a merger with James C. Justice Companies, a West Virginia company that also owns the Greenbrier Resort (White Sulphur Springs, WV) and the Resort at Glade Springs (Daniels, WV). Justice owned several coal mines in West Virginia before selling them in 2009. “I was really pleased with the vote,” said Justice, adding that he was happy with the fact that Wintergreen Members were taking an active role in the sale of the resort. “It was a good day; I was pleased with the opportunity to meet a lot of people. The Friday before the Fourth of July, David Parr, his wife, Caroline, and his youngest daughter, Grace, were all settled in for the evening – until he saw a weather alert from Nelson County Life’s own Tommy Stafford. “Because they were calling for hail damage, I went outside to move vehicles around,” said David, who lives in Piney River. “But by the time we got to the front porch, the wind was blowing so bad and the plants and the leaves on the trees were going crazy – I knew this wasn’t just a thunder storm.” So David told 13-year-old Grace Parr to grab Henry – a strictly outdoor dog who did not appreciate being told to defy the rules by coming inside for the night – and the family (save 16-year-old Heather, who was out with friends and didn’t make it back to the house for several hours) went down to the basement to weather out the storm. A few hours later, they emerged to find themselves in a different world.
“If I hadn’t moved my truck and her Jeep when I got that email from Nelson County Life, both of [the vehicles] would have been crushed… and if we hadn’t taken Henry to the basement, he would have been killed.” Saturday morning, David woke up and starting snapping photos. He lost a total of 7 large oak trees in the storm – not to mention the damage to their house, a shed, and poor Henry’s dog house. It will probably be quite some time before David, his family, and the whole of central Virginia forget that storm – which people are now calling a derecho. “I mean, from a fear factor, it was probably number one in my memory,” said David, adding that he’s lived through hurricanes and tornadoes. “I don’t ever remember anything that scary, and especially after the widespread damage settled into my mind the next day and I saw the damage and I saw what could have happened – it was pretty scary.” NCL

There’s no shortage of beer, wine, or whisky in the valleys of Nelson County, but these days, you might start coming across a new locally-brewed beverage: Kombucha. Kombucha, a non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic tea, has a similar brewing process to beer, but instead of emphasizing yeast and de-emphasizing bacteria (like beer), Kombucha does just the opposite. Based in Afton, Barefoot Kombucha owners, Kate and Ethan Zucherman, started brewing “bucha” about two years ago and started selling it via a CSK – Community Supported Kombucha. “But we found ourselves awash in bottles,” said Kate. These days, Barefoot Kombucha is sticking to kegs and refillable models – you can buy bottles at some local shops to fill with keg bucha and take home. In doing so, you might say they’ve shrunk their carbon (bare)footprint. “We decided we really wanted to stay true to the ethos of no waste,” said Ethan. Plus, he says Kombucha is a “probiotic beverage. Much like yogurt or keifer or really tasty raw sauerkraut, for those who appreciate that component of health in their bodies. Kombucha, like beer, wine or even soda, can be flavored. Barefoot Kombucha is currently brewing fresh-pressed organic ginger root for the Ginger Bucha. Other flavors include Flower Sunrise and Plum Blossom. “You’re always trying to find the balance between sweet and the vinegar,” said Kate. “You take the mother culture, add sugar and tea and then flavor it with different herbs or spices according to the actual flavor.” Kate, who is expecting a baby in September, loves drinking the ginger-flavored non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverage. “I’ve been appreciating the digestive help as part of the pregnancy,” she said, adding that Kombucha is a raw beverage, so pregnant women wary of eating raw should steer clear. Though Kate and Ethan were both born and raised in the greater Nelson/Albemarle area, they’ve traveled around a bit before settling in Nelson which, they say, is just about the perfect place to brew bucha. “There is a long history of appreciation for local foods and beverages [here], said Ethan. “Kombucha is one more aspect to the local food movement. One thing we feel it really offers is an alternative nonalcoholic. It’s great to have it at Blue Mountain [Brewery] where they want to feel like they’re right there having a drink, but not necessarily that beer… or that second or third beer.” NCL
