from thepublishers If we can make it through the holiday season without losing the whisk Adam is playing with in the picture, we will be amazed. When daddy’s making french toast, Adam insists on beating the eggs with his “whiskers.” Peyton likes cups. She likes to put things in her cups. She likes to pour things into cups. There have been times the only way she has eaten the food on her plate is if she puts it in a cup. Dump the hot dogs in a cup. Now dump them in the other cup. Back again to the other cup. “Mommy, ice please?” As the kiddos entertain themselves with “whiskers” and cups, mom and pop have been working like busy elves on their next project. We launched this magazine in 2005 when it was just me and Tommy and the pets. Nearly 8 years later, we find ourselves blessed with a wonderful family and a work-at-home business and lifestyle we truly love. We’ve kept getting nudged over the years to launch sister publications in neighboring counties. Under our mom & pop business model, undertaking such an expansion without it weighing a toll on our family life would have been difficult. And at the end of the day, we are parents first, and business owners second. Plus, there’s a way to expand organically,

without reinventing the wheel. Since year one, we’ve been constantly turning down wonderful stories outside of Nelson County because they’ve occurred beyond a geopolitical boundary. And let’s be honest: that just felt wrong. Starting with the January 2013 issue, Nelson County Life becomes Blue Ridge Life™ (Well played, Mayans). Full color. A wider distribution and circulation. We’re not reinventing the wheel. We’re adding to it thanks to the readers, advertisers and contributors who make these pages what they are. Same look and feel, with a few updates. Here’s looking at you Today there is really no agreed upon toast except perhaps eye contact when toasting. Clink glasses…don’t clink…but always look each person in the eye as you do. Toasting probably dates to ancient Greece, its provenance fueled by practicality—to ensure one’s wine wasn’t poisoned. Spiking wine with poison had become an all too common means of dealing with personal problems: disposing of an enemy, a political opponent, a mother-in-law. To assure his guests that the wine wasn’t poisoned, a host would pour wine from a common pitcher and drink it before the assembled in a symbol of friendship. When guests saw he didn’t keel over, he’d then raise his glass to all to do likewise. The Romans who admired the Greeks, and tended to handle their social problems by similar means, also adopted the tradition of toasting. The term itself comes from the Roman practice of dropping a piece of burnt bread into wine. This tempered some of the less appealing wines the Romans drank since charcoal reduces acidity in

bad wine making it more palatable. In ancient Rome, bits of toast were floated in goblets of wine. One story tells of a rich man who threw quite the lavish party and filled the public baths with wine. Cheers. Beautiful young women were invited to swim in it. When asked his opinion of the wine, a guest responded: “I like it very much, but I prefer the toast.” And in the 18th century partiers got so caught up toasting, they toasted even to those not present. A woman who became the object of many such toasts came to be known as the “toast of the town.” You don’t have to wait till December 31st to drink champagne and make a toast. Raise a glass to life and all it offers. Toast your health and the health of your friends. Toast if you love deeply and toast if you’re loved. Life goes by quickly. Give gratitude that you didn’t become toast. Happy New Year to all and may you know much peace and joy. The following grower champagnes are my top picks for bubbly: Voirin-Jumel, NV Brut – From the Premier Cru vineyards of Cramant, Voirin-Jumel has beautiful floral and min-

eral characteristics. Notes of poached pear, meringue, dried fruits and apple. Pair with lemon-flavored scallops, sole or Carpaccio of salmon. $39 Diebolt Vallois - A Blanc de Blancs, which means all white grapes, and in Champagne this means all Chardonnay. This was my top pick last year and I continue to love Jacques Diebolt’s wines. A rich, medium-bodied champagne with grapes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vines. Round, elegant, creamy with notes of honeysuckle and chamomile. $52 Roland Champion, NV Brut – Another Blanc de Blancs, from a small, family-owned producer in the village of Chouilly with only Grand Cru vineyards. Fourth-generation daughter, Carole, has even made the trek to Nellysford. This is what one reviewer writes: This Champagne offers ethereal grace and poise and harmony; if I were fighting a duel tonight, I would ask for this Champagne as my last beverage. Thirty years ago, these hands belonged to an auto mechanic. But thanks to a back surgery that forced Allan Sandy to rethink his career, he now uses them to make flint lock rifles. “It’s therapeutic. Most of the time I am here by myself. I spend a lot of hours here at the bench. And I’m content.” And who wouldn’t be? Allan’s shop is tucked away on a farm in Afton at the end of a gravel road. Inside the poplar paneled building is a corner dedicated to the tools of the trade. Clamped in the vice is the piece he’s working on: a Revolutionary War era long rifle with a sliding wooden patch box. “There is a great mystique that you feel,” Allan explains. “It kind of takes you back 250 years. Especially when you’re taking meat for the family.” Most recently, Allan took down a 6-point buck with his 45 caliber maple stock Lancaster, Pennsylvania rifle. Today, the target is a pine tree in the woods. Aiming at it, Allan pulls back the trigger on the gun he built for himself 25 years ago.

For a split second, you hear the crack of the flint sparking the blast that shoots a hand-loaded pellet through a thick cloud of smoke. And it’s that smell, the one of burnt sulfur, saltpeter and charcoal – the main ingredients that make black powder – that flint lock enthusiasts find so intoxicating.

“There’s just something about that big cloud of smoke that comes out in front of you. Once you touch the trigger, a lot of times you don’t see your target anymore. Whatever game you’re shooting at, it’s hidden behind a cloud of smoke.”

Building and using these weapons demand patience. Though many of Allan’s pieces are commissioned as collectibles – his waiting list is currently about a year long –– some are meant to be fired. “It’s much like bow hunting. You make that one shot count. Typically you’re not shooting as far as you might be with a modern gun so you change your hunting tactics slightly. You hunt in the deeper woods which actually improved, my hunting skills tremendously.” Allan recently opened his shop to dozens of people touring the Monticello Artisan Trail, an annual event organized by The Artisans Center of Virginia. Allan said he was excited to expose people to a time-honored craft that is sometimes overshadowed by violent news events involving modern weaponry. “They’ve never seen this before. It was so neat to see the expressions on many of these people’s faces,” Allan beamed. “I had one lady who was not a gun person at all but she said ‘I would love to have one of these hanging on my wall just because of the artwork.’” The polished Valley rifle with the sterling silver is one of those show pieces. To be clear, the original guns the Colonists used to fight off the British were far from ornate. But in judging the form and function of those civilian-type weapons, Allan is pretty blunt and proud about the tradition he keeps alive on his Afton farm. “Our Early American long rifles were art. These are the guns that won the American Revolution.” NCL

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. The Christmas season always brings back a fullness of heart when I think of the holidays I’ve spent in Love, Virginia. I have celebrated Christmas in a variety of houses here on the mountain but the ones that stick in my mind the most were the years spent in the little green hunting camp I called home from 1980 to 1983 and again from 1990 until 1993. When our family first started coming to Love in the 1970s the camp belonged to Dr. and Mrs. Saunders. Prior to that it was owned by a number of other people. Jesse Bridge once told me the camp was there when he came to the Snead School as a child. Jesse just passed away at eighty-eight years of age so the camp may be close to a hundred years old, or older.

Christmas at the Camp STORY by LYNN COFFEY The first Christmas there was the most exciting for me because I was living the mountain life I had dreamed about since childhood. If the camp lacked modern conveniences I never paid much attention to it. I was too enamored with living in the Blue Ridge to notice that my new digs didn’t have one bit of insulation so when the wind blowed … so did the curtains! It did have an indoor bathroom, of sorts. The room was so small that one could sit on the potty, stick feet in the shower and wash hands in the miniscule sink without having to move. The kitchen was kind of a one-person room as well. Literally, you could stand in the middle of the isle and open the ‘fridge door, stir something on the stove, chop onions on the counter and wash the dishes without ever moving your feet! But if those rooms were tiny, the rest of the house made up for it. It had four bedrooms and an enormous living/dining area in the front of the house. There was a bar on one end and a ten foot table that could easily seat 14 on the other. Boards were nailed onto the rafters providing a cathedral ceiling, making the room look even larger. And because there was no ceiling, our first Christmas tree was a monster. Gladys Coffey said I could come over and top off a huge

blue spruce growing on their property. The tree had to be cut three more times before it would fit in the house! I never was much good at eyeballing measurements. Once the behemoth was in place, my daughter Heather and I strung popcorn and cranberry garlands on it, standing on chairs and the bar to reach the top. The only other decorations adorning it were white lights, red plaid bows and pinecones sprinkled with glitter. I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and with an old quilt spread around its base, it looked like something right out of a Laura Ingalls novel. When the holidays were over we drug the massive tree outdoors for the birds to feast on. When my first marriage ended, I found myself living back at the camp, sad but determined to be happy in the future. That first Christmas was frugal to say the least. I went to a co-worker’s farm, cut a cedar tree and loaded it in the back of my ’51 Ford pickup and drove home. I dug out the candles with white lights and put them in every window. I hiked up the mountain and pulled garlands of running cedar to place on the fireplace mantle. Turning to come back I remember looking down and seeing the candle’s soft glow in my cabin against a backdrop of evening sky and dark blue mountains and my heart filled with a joy I hadn’t known in quite some time. Suddenly the lack of material goods seemed trivial compared to the richness my heart felt. As I stepped through the door the aroma of cedar filled the camp and I put a pan of water on to boil for cocoa, turned on some Christmas carols and threw a few logs in the woodstove. I filled an antique trunk with wrapped presents for my daughter and strung colored lights in the antlers of a deer head mounted over the fireplace. The whole effect was cozy, especially when I turned out the lights and lit a few oil lamps. The dim yellow glow of their flames cast long shadows about the room and set the scene for simplicity. Heather came in and we ate our Christmas meal, attended a candlelight church service, drove around to see the holiday lights, and came back to open presents. I celebrated two more Christmases in that fashion and although I was alone, I was never lonely. Then the unexpected happened. My family of two turned into a multitude of blessings as December 1992 rolled around. My mother, whom I hadn’t celebrated a Christmas with in twenty-five years, moved to Waynesboro, just a hop, skip and a jump from where I lived. A month before, I began dating a man who just happened to be my “up the road” neighbor and the miracle of love unfolded as Billy Coffey and I began to plan our future together. Although we’ve had many a happy Christmas in our own cabins since, the one spent at the Saunder’s camp will always remain the dearest. For it was there I received the greatest gift one could ever acquire; peace of mind, hope for the future and a heart full of love. For the first time, the Bible verse of Jeremiah 29:11 that I clung to during the hard times, became a living reality as its timeless words spoke to me. “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil; to give you a future and a hope.” May each of you, regardless of your circumstances, be thankful this Christmas season for the simple blessings God gives as well as the greatest gift a loving Father can bestow; the gift of His Son ... Tis the Season! Share the Joy with your Favorite Charities

By Julia Rogers Julia Rogers is a licensed CPA residing in Nelson County Tis the Season Although charitable organizations have year round needs, statistics show nearly half of individual donations occur between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This roughly aligns with the Christian season of Advent – the time period leading up to Christmas Day devoted to thoughtful preparation. Thoughtful preparation should be the first part of your charitable giving plans. Rather than react to the many appeals that you receive, take some time to plan your gifts and evaluate the true benefit to the particular causes that you support. Start by reviewing your giving history – make a list of your gifts from the last few years and consider which organizations are truly important to you. Use this as a starting point for developing your long term giving plans. Now it’s time to research your list of charities. Well-managed charitable organizations usually spend at least 80 percent of their receipts on program services. Several internet sites provide helpful ratings on larger charities and verification of their tax-exempt status - try www.CharityNavigator.

org. Other organizations, such as the Community Foundation or your Church, can provide information on local charities that have the greatest needs in your community. Next, pare down your giving to the better organizations. Giving small amounts to a large number of organizations will only serve to clutter your mailbox with additional appeals and waste funds on mailing and administrative expenses. One or two larger gifts to the best organizations will put more dollars to work in program services. Consider disaster appeals carefully – you may wish to leave room in your annual budget for emergency appeals – but do not respond quickly to emergency appeals. Areas that suffer from a significant disaster often take months or years to define their rebuilding plans, and you may wish to set aside your funds for those purposes. The first appeal that you receive in the wake of a disaster may not be the best use of your funds. Hang up the phone. Do not respond to telephone solicitors. Most telemarketers charge large commissions for

their work and only a small portion of the donation actually makes its way to the charitable organization. In addition, you have no idea how carefully they will handle your credit card and other personal information. If you normally itemize your deductions when you file your tax returns, your donation to an IRS approved charity or religious organization will be deductible if you have the proper documentation. Retain copies of your canceled check or credit card receipt. If the donation exceeds $250, you must also have a written acknowledgement from the charitable organization. If the organization provides a product or service in return for your donation, this must be shown on the receipt as a reduction of the donation. You may wish to consider discussing your charitable plans with your tax or financial advisor. They might recommend spreading the gift over a number of years or using donations of stock or other assets to make the best use of your gift. We have much to be thankful for this holiday season. Don’t slam the door on a buyer!

Are you being flooded with prospective purchasers? Chances are that is a resounding NO! In the past, 10 home showings should have generated an offer to purchase. With greater inventory and more options, it may now take up to 15 showings (and a current average of 215 days on market) to generate a ready, willing, and able buyer. Sellers, be prepared when opportunity knocks, and avoid these major “turn offs” for home buyers. Dirt: Nothing turns off a buyer quicker than a dirty home. Roll up the sleeves and get to work to eliminate dirt and grime. Go the extra mile from scrubbing to steam cleaning. Cleaning may take a lot of effort, but very little financial investment. Cleaning is time well spent! Odor: Homes are bought on hearing, sight, and smell! Avoid cooking fish and other odorous

foods. Make necessary lifestyle changes such as only smoking outdoors. Eliminate pet odors and conceal pet paraphernalia. Half of the population doesn’t even like pets and will immediately be turned off if your home has lingering pet odor. Clean carpets and upholstery; if the odor persists, consider replacement. Clutter: Less is more! Clear from countertops to closets. Room to room, make sure furniture and accessories are minimal; leave items that accentuate a room and remove all obstacles to pathways and focal points. Personal items: Decorate to sell not live. Remove eccentric décor and colors, including paint. In addition, don’t distract buyers with walls and tables full of family photos. Buyers should envision them, not you, living in the home. Old fixtures: Dated fixtures can be left for the buyer to change, but

they may impede you from getting the best possible price. Fixtures are inexpensive relative to the return on the investment. Change dated cabinet hardware, light fixtures, and even extremely old kitchen appliances. Wallpaper: Today’s buyers want no part of wallpaper! Wall paper is extremely personalized and can be a pain to remove. Most buyers want to enjoy the high of owning a “new to them” home and not have the immediate buzz kill of another item on the move-in to-do list. Popcorn ceilings: From floor to ceiling the home needs to be appealing. No buyer will look up to admire that popcorn or cottage cheese ceiling. It may have been fashionable in the 60’s or 70’s, but it is no longer hip. Restore it to a smooth surface. Curb appeal: Curb appeal is that critical first impression. Buyers will judge a book by the cover.

Weed, edge, trim, and mulch the flower beds. Make mildew, dirt, spider webs, and other debris disappear, so that the buyer won’t. Misrepresentation: Beauty or the Beast? Don’t misrepresent the home in a manner that the buyer will automatically be “let down” upon arrival. Sellers: Run errands, go for a walk, or just vacate the premises. Allow buyers the freedom to see and discuss your home with their agent. Attract the buyer with marketing. Wow the buyer with price AND condition. Here are some options to make Thanksgiving, Christmas and that long winter stretch a little more enjoyable – even if its just from the inside of your warm home looking out! 1) Berries - Winterberry, Sparkleberry, Blue Hollies and American Holly cultivars. Wonderful dime sized red berries starting to show themselves in November on the Winterberry and Sparkleberry while the Blue Holly and American Holly cultivars, with slightly smaller berries, add in a nice green backdrop while their berries are on display. Plant in sun and avoid excessive nitrogen to get maximum berry production. 2) Bark - River Birch, Natchez Crape Myrtle and Paperbark Maple. Even without the foliage trees can have a ton of interest in their bark. Exfoliating bark is a must in the winter garden and all of these will not disappoint. The three of these show off their bark with the Natchez Crape Myrtle giving a bonus to the summer’s garden with its white blooms. Plant in full sun and in areas where water is adequate for these specimen, medium sized trees. Keep limbs up to at least shoulder height (over time) so the bark can be seen easily. 3) Deep, deep evergreens - Boxwood (American, Justin Brouwer’s, Jensen, etc.), Norway Spruce, Southern Magnolia, English Laurel, Japanese Aucuba. If your winter garden is, well, brown, you must

reconsider some of your corner, foundation or specimen plantings with these options. Deep green is an absolute joy in the winter garden when the first snow hits the ground <fingers crossed>. When snow is excessive, take a photo and then beat the snow off of these so as to avoid severe breakage. The Japanese Aucuba (variety ‘Gold Dust’) adds in blotches of canary yellow accents on their foliage and is great cut flower (spring, summer and fall) and winter decorations. 4) Hellebore - If you don’t have Lenten Rose in your garden right now, stop reading, go to your nearest garden center and BUY! Yes, garden readers, they ARE that good and no garden is complete without their winter foliage and early blooms (think January/February) to remind you that spring is just a few months out. 5) Arum italicum – this perennial has an arrow-shaped leaf with mottled variegation. Unlike most perennials, Arum is dormant in the summer but emerges in the fall and stays up and green all winter long. 6) Japanese Umbrella Pine - one of my all-time favorites. Although it can be difficult to grow, it is one of those trees that will catch every plant connoisseur’s eye and add a wonderful accent in the garden. With 3 inch long evergreen needles in whorls on a pyramidal, upright tree, this plant is worth the effort. Plant this specimen in moist, partly acidic soil, in full sun on the east side of your home as it likes protection from winter’s western winds. 7) Pansies – and finally, while many people associate pansies with fall seasonal color they are actually a tough winter hardy plant. In a mild winter pansies can show great color all the way through and even after a cold and snowy winter they always perk back up in the early spring. We have discovered a particular hardiness in the Frizzle Sizzle series.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, My nerves are shot. What can I do? The above is a very common phrase for me to hear when I sit down to listen to a patient. There are a lot of folks who feel anxious, nervous, jumpy, irritable, or panicky to the point where it interrupts their lives. If this describes you, then take heart that you aren’t alone. Anxiety is a normal human feeling. In fact, in the right context it is a helpful function. For instance, if someone is robbing your house you might sense fear, sweatiness, and a racing heart. That fear might motivate you to yell, run, or call 911--all reasonable things to do at the time. Hopefully, these feelings pass when the situation is over. For some people, however, they start to invade every day life for no reason. Anxiousness, fear, chest pains, sweats, nervousness, inability to concentrate, dizziness, and muscle tension all without a good reason are signs of unhelpful anxiety. If anxiousness is building inside of you, it is time to take action. First, examine what you are putting into your

body (you are what you eat). Caffeine, alcohol, diet pills, decongestants, and illicit drugs all can make anxiety worse. Second, get some fresh air and exercise. Raising that heart rate and sweating a little every day is probably the best treatment for anxiety available. Also, you have got to actively try to calm the mind. Some methods for achieving this include prayer, meditation, yoga, reflection, and discussion with a friend. Simply setting aside 20 minutes per day to think about what real worries you have and what things you really don’t need to worry about can be enormously helpful. At times, these suggestions aren’t enough. If that is the case for you then it’s time to seek out your doctor. He or she can help decide what the next step should be. 10 Step Program for Surviving the Holidays By January, we have had enough. From Thanksgiving through New Year’s, we revel in the holidays: eating, shopping, eating, drinking, celebrating, eating and staying up too late. Then we repeat it the next day. It is an annual ritual that we tell ourselves won’t happen next year but it does. It is challenging to break patterns as we are creatures of habit and the food and festivities are so delicious. It is possible to celebrate without the weight gain. I offer some gentle reminders for you to post on the refrigerator this holiday season. 1) Sleep. Notice your sleep patterns and learn how much sleep your body needs in order to function well without a lot of stimulants. Lack of sleep lessens the body’s ability to fight colds and germs. 2) Stay in the habit of exercise. Regular exercise boosts your immune system. Bring family with you to exercise.

3) Exercise with a friend and make a commitment to each other for support. It keeps you accountable so you don’t fall off the exercise wagon. It is too easy to get out of the habit of exercise so avoid more than two days between exercise sessions. 4) Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. 5) Eat slowly savoring the flavor. It reduces the desire to go for seconds if you slow down. 6) Limit the number and portion size of desserts. 7) Know that the sun will still rise tomorrow if you don’t get everything completed on your “to do” list today. 8) Don’t beat yourself up over anything that you think you “should have done”. Each new day, you are given a whole new 24 hours to celebrate. (words by Thich Nhat Hanh). 9) Laugh a lot – it is the best medicine. 10) Treasure the moments with family, friends and community.

Chris Barksdale has been told he’ll never have another bad day in his life. Unfortunately, it came at quite a cost: Chris spent Hurricane Sandy first on the HMS Bounty (built for the 1962 movie Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando) and then in the cold, choppy waters of the Atlantic. Chris is not a sailor by trade. He ended up on the HMS Bounty after a friend asked not once, but twice, for him to come on board as the engineer. When his good friend, first mate John, asked the second time, Chris couldn’t turn him down. “I told myself not many people get this chance in life,” said Chris. “And if I don’t go he’s gonna keep calling me, so I felt the need and desire to go.” Chris, John, and the rest of the 14-person crew started their trip in September at Booth Port Harbor in Maine and starting heading toward their final destination of Galveston, Texas where the ship would be overwintered. But on Sunday, October 28, things stopped going according to plan. The captain of the ship called everyone together and told them he wouldn’t blame anyone if they wanted to get off the boat before the storm hit. When no one opted to get off, he steered the boat in the south/southeastern direction thinking he would avoid the worst part of the storm. “There was a little apprehension initially, but once I started listening to him and what he described he intended to do, it seemed like he had a pretty good handle on it,” Chris said. “We didn’t know at that time that it was going to grow to the size and intensity that it did.” Late Sunday morning, Chris knew they were in trouble when the boat started taking on more water than the crew could pump out, but the crew continued to try everything in

order to keep the ship afloat. “There were very competent people all around me,” he said. “I had a lot of admiration for [these young men and women] – not only for their knowledge, but for their work ethics.” By late Sunday evening, the crew had contacted the coast guard, readied the immersion suits and life preservers, and packaged dry bags full of flares and drinking water. They hoped they’d be able to stay on board until at least morning, but they donned their immersion suits when the boat starting listing heavily to the starboard side. And then they hit the water. “That was the scariest part,” Chris said. “The part when I was really concerned whether I was going to live or die.” He, like many others, was tangled up in the masts and rigging several times before finally spotting a group of crewmen and women and eventually deploying a life raft. After he and the five others on the raft – including one man with compressed vertebrae, a dislocated shoulder, and 3 or 4 broken ribs – spent several hours listening to C130s deployed by the Coast Guard until it was safe for helicopters to rescue them. He and most of the crew were eventually saved. But the captain, Robin Walbridge has not been found, and crewmember Claudene Christian was found but pronounced dead at the hospital. Chris said he will miss those two – on the boat they became something of a family. But when asked if he would every do it again? “Yes. In a heartbeat.” NCL

Daughter of late Lovingston vet continues family tradition

When Jessica Ligon was 12 years old, she accompanied her father to Cherry Hill Farm to see a cow calving in a creek in the middle of the night. “It was probably raining or snowing; I remember being cold,” said Jessica, now fully titled Dr. Jessica Ligon, DVM. “And I just thought it was the coolest thing; Dad pulled a live calf and everybody was happy.” The young Dr. Ligon is now walking the footsteps of her father, Dr. Steuart Ligon, who passed away just a few short weeks before Jessica turned in her application to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, where she also studied Dairy Science as an undergraduate. “I actually applied a year early,” said Jessica. “Dad got pretty sick in 2007 and I was a junior in college and trying to get in [the application] before he passed away.” While Jessica is the only one of her siblings

that ended up in the veterinary field, her sisters have since told her that their dad expressed interest to them in one of his five children taking over the family practice. Jessica starts the transition process this month in taking over her father’s old practice, which will be her practice starting January 1, 2013. “Experience is a lot and it would have been cool to learn from him; he did some stuff we didn’t learn in school and it’s unfortunate I didn’t get to learn those things from him,” said Jessica, who added that the first time she set foot in her dad’s office knowing it would be hers, it was bittersweet. “I wish dad were here.” A few people who worked with the senior Dr. Ligon have stayed on and will continue to stay on as the young Dr. Ligon transitions into her full-time practice for both small and large animals, sometimes hearing the tricks of the trade in her father’s voice.
