from thepublishers Some nights we are so exhausted, we halfway pass out on Adam’s bed as we tuck him in for the night. Actually, part of that is a lie. We don’t tuck him in. We tuck in Biscuit, Herbert and Kringle. Once those guys are under the covers, I mentally cue up a House of Pain song as Adam commences to Jump around! (If you are over 45, you can skip this part.) Jump around! (crazy beats) Jump around! (more crazy beats) Jump up, jump up and get down! It’s how he learned to count. To think I would have stunted his learning if I had told him to behave and quit jumping on the bed! Though we may live to regret it, this routine works for now. Once he’s done with the counting, he asks for Mother Goose and so we bust a few of her rhymes. An observation: Little Muss Muffet eats the breakfast of champions. Curds and whey? The woman’s gone paleo and could probably jump over the cow jumping over the moon. So why is she so scared of a itsy bitsy spider? Meanwhile, Little Miss Tuckett, who is eating peaches and cream (des-
sert), threatens an innocent grasshopper. There would be peace and balance in the world if Muffet and Tuckett swapped seating arrangements. This evening after Mother Goose, Adam released more energy twirling his finger in my hair as he walked over and around me in a circle saying his ABCs. When we got to about “T”, the twirling stopped. The boy had managed to tangle a digit so tightly to my scalp, we both were stuck in bed for a few painful seconds, his little finger presumably turning “little boy blue.” Mother Goose knows her stuff. Breathing, Part II Barbera and Bonarda, Thanksgiving and Christmas jumped their way into this column, but I return now as promised to the notion of breathing a wine. Generally speaking red wines benefit more from aeration than whites. A traditionalist, I prefer real corks yet understand the advantages of Stelven screw caps, especially for whites. With red wines, particularly those that will age, natural corks are ideal because they allow in imperceptible amounts of air which over time alter the wine…we hope for the best. A rule of thumb is that the younger and more tannic a wine, the more time it needs to breathe. If a wine is tight, aeration will often help. Be careful, however, with those old vintages that have been aging in the cellar. Air does not always benefit fragility and old age. Many people deliberately open bottles a few hours before serving because they wish the wine to breathe. While this will usually do no harm, there are a couple reasons why you might wish to reconsider. Part of the enjoyment of wine is to see how
it evolves from beginning to end. In my wine tastings I often do not open bottles and decant beforehand even when such action would improve the wine, wishing instead for my tasters to catch the initial nose of a wine. Also consider that the surface area of a wine in a bottle-neck is so small relative to its volume, this sort of bottle breathing is likely to do little. Try this experiment. Take a decent bottle of wine and pour out into a nice sized balloon glass. Let stand for 15- 20 minutes then pour from the opened bottle a second glass and taste side by side. See if the first glass poured doesn’t taste a bit smoother and mellower, having had that much more surface area with which to react to the air. One reason we swirl a wine is to maximize the surface space that can react with air and to release the esters, ethers, and aldehydes which, combined with oxygen, yield the bouquet of the wine. Decanting a wine is traditionally done to separate the wine from the sediment which can impart off odors or textures. But decanting a wine also serves to maximize its contact with
air and is, I find, a lovelier way to aerate than using a plastic device. I will even decant full-bodied whites which don’t throw any sediment simply because they look so beautiful in that crystal decanter. Quickie rules: Decant Bordeaux, Barolos, California Cabernets. Note: the thicker the skin on a grape (Cabernet Sauvignon), or if a wine is vinified with stems and is particularly dense, the more time it will need to breathe. Château Cantemerle, 2007 - Many Bordeaux, especially if the Cabernets dominate, can benefit from breathing. Here Merlot plays an equal role, so decanting for aeration an hour prior to dining will suffice. Look for ripe red cherry aromas and some musk. $19 Mas de Daumas Gassac, 2006 – An all time favourite from an organic property, this is an incredible blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7%Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Pinot Noir and 3% Syrah. $49 Provence and the French Riviera, Oct 2012. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack it was such a big heart pain,” Nelson music man Bennie Dodd says of the day he thought he’d play his last song. He was in between gigs when he grabbed his chest. Though it felt like his heart was going to go, his doctor – who, in his days as a University of Virginia med student, frequently saw Bennie Dodd play – diagnosed the musician with a perforated ulcer in the upper intestine. That meant surgery. “He operated on me and did very well. But the bill was like, really, really high,” Bennie said. “We got approved for Medicaid and we’ve still got medical bills we’ve got to pay.” Perched on a stool at Coupe DeVille’s, a restaurant near UVa where Bennie’s played for more than 20 years, students taking a break from exams enjoy a few pints and the sounds of Bennie and his
friend, Tony Fortune. Though Bennie is a Nelson County boy, this Charlottesville joint is like a second home for him. “I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar… bass guitar – both electrics, the 4 and 5 string and also the acoustic bass… I do play some piano, I play some mandolin, some light banjo,” said Bennie. Just to name a few. And he sings. Boy, does he sing. Classic country, 50s, 60s, and 70s music, some George Jones and Johnny Cash, lots of church music and, of course the Beatles. He attributes his love of singing (and music) to many people – including his parents, aunts, and uncles – but says Ms. Trusdale, the choir director at Nelson County High School when he was there started his career in music. Plus, that’s where he met Jimmy Fortune (of the Statler Brothers), who
Bennie says is the twin he never had. “Bennie and I go way back,” said Jimmy. “I got to know Bennie because we had chorus together with Ms. Trusdale. I heard Bennie sing and I really liked his talent and we picked together back in the high school days and it led on into bands for years. We were great friends and Bennie had so much talent it was unbelievable.” And this is where the magic comes in. Since Bennie’s health scare, the bills have been racking up. He and his wife haven’t been able to make a house payment in months. The goal now, he says, is to “pay down the medical bills and get us a little cheap place. We certainly cant’ afford the $1200 a month we had because we’re on a fixed income. My wife hasn’t been employed in several years. We’re going to have to buy a place, somehow, a cheap place.” continued on page 14

Welcoming the Winter Wonderland A gleaming blanket of snow is beautiful, but how can I temper its harsh glare? The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your beautiful winter views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you eliminating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright? I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furniture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. A Winter’s Day at the Cabin STORY by LYNN COFFEY
I happen to be one of those people who loves winter. At this announcement most people start with the hissing and booing but no argument of sleet, slush or freezing temps can dissuade me. Maybe it was all those years growing up in south Florida when the only exhibit of winter we witnessed was on the front of Christmas cards. I longed for snow, much to my father’s dismay since that was his main reason for leaving Ohio. Upon moving to Virginia I remarked to someone how beautiful everything was (and this was before it snowed!). They chimed in, “You think this is pretty? Just wait until spring when the dogwood blossoms and the tulips pop up.” Sure enough, next spring was lovely, but I was still sold on winter, slush and all. Maybe it was the stark beauty of the woods, leafless and grey, that appealed to me. Or how you could see animal tracks in the snow or a deer running through a thicket without any foliage to hide them from view. Or the way the heavy-laden clouds promising a snowfall rolled overhead. The crunch of snow underfoot. Whatever it was, I liked it and have continued to do so for the forty three years that I’ve made Virginia my home. I am always excited when the first snow starts to fall, especially when the flakes are huge and lacey. I call them “Linda Patrick” flakes, after our local artist whose paintings depict many rural winter scenes with those large snowflakes drifting down. Up here in Love we get the wind full force so the snow doesn’t slowly drift as much as it violently swirls around the cabin as the wind changes its mind and spins in every direction. On a winter day I love to hunker down and stay home. Billy and I get up early, and I fix a pot of fresh brewed coffee while he throws a few logs on the fire. Then we sit in our bentwood rockers on either side of the woodstove and chat about what the plan is for the day. We look like Ma and Pa Kettle and are starting to act like them, too. Our granddaughter Peyton, who is now twelve, was talking about some old, OLD, woman she knew.
When asked how old she thought the woman was, Peyton replied, “Oh, I’d say she was at least sixty!” I burst out laughing, wondering when I’d start falling off my rocker at my advanced age of sixty-five. When light begins to creep over the mountain, we head to the barn to feed the horses and muck out their stalls. The smell of hay surrounds you as you enter and the horses paw the ground in anticipation of their morning ration of sweet feed. When turned out for the day both geldings run across the field, bucking in the cold air. If there’s snow on the ground they drop down and take a good roll before starting in on their hay. A cold winter day is a perfect time for putting a pot of homemade soup on top of the woodstove and letting it simmer until lunchtime. A trip to the pantry where I’ve stored all the vegetables canned from last summer’s garden reveals the ingredients needed to make a thick, hearty meal. Especially if I knead some yeast rolls to go along with it. The never ending task of putting firewood on the porch is a daily ritual and I dress for the occasion in long johns, boots and coveralls, my standard winter ensemble. It may not be a fashion statement but we’re talking comfort and warmth, not fashion, here. In years past, I would strap on my cross country skis and go for a slide up the Parkway for a mile or two. I remember one night in particular when the snow was heavy and the traffic nonexistent I stopped to take a breather at milepost 18 and noticed movement off to my left. Turning to look, a herd of deer had been silently following after me and now scattered off into the dark woods surrounding me. It was one of those neverto-be-forgotten experiences that I will always treasure. So call me crazy for taking winter over the hot summer weather but that’s why God didn’t create just one bird. He knew the value of having different birds with a variety of songs within a species. My song just happens to be, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!” NCL

News of his financial troubles spread quickly from a Facebook post. Lifelong friend (and his wife’s cousin), Lyna Watson, started contacting all of Bennie’s 1,400 Facebook friends and asking them to give a couple dollars to Bennie to help him out. “I posted a note that said if everyone donated $2 for all the love and fun Bennie has given us, we could at least save the house,” said Lyna. “And I just said, ‘OK, guys, it’s time to rally.” From just small messages like that, she found several very generous locals – mostly Nelsonians, she said – and raised about $500. That’s when she was able to get in touch with some other local musicians and started working on the Bennie Benefit or, as it’s come to be known – the Big, Big, Bennie-Fit. The Bennie-Fit, according to its website (www.bdoddbenefit.com), will feature “Friendship, Fun + Great Music: Helping our buddy Bennie to get a new start.” The Jan. 7 event will feature several local musicians plus Jimmy Fortune, who said he didn’t think twice about helping Bennie – despite living in Nashville and travel-
ing frequently these days. “The called and said they were going to do a benefit and I said, ‘Count me in!” said Jimmy. “I wanted to be with him and to try to help him out, if we can. I think friends are coming out of the woodwork; friends he didn’t even know he had. He had no idea how many people loved him – we all love him and care about him so much. I’m just thankful we’re able to do this thing for him.” Other featured musicians include Shannon Branch, Jan Smith & Jeff Vogelgesang, Jamal & Jamie, Sierra, Soul Transit Authority, Hartwell Woody, Gladstones, Duke Merrick, and Danny Beirne Trio and the music will go from 6 p.m. to past midnight and nearly 100% of the proceeds of the event will go directly to Bennie’s medical bills. Both Lyna and Jimmy mentioned the numerous benefits Bennie has done for others. “He is very generous with his time,” said Lyna. “I’ve seen him go from one gig to another and some of them he isn’t even paid for. The way I feel, he’s helped so many people, it’s time for people to come back and help him.” NCL

How long do you retain your tax & financial records?

New Year’s Resolutions… Last year I had a great plan to go the fitness center every day. I even made an unflattering picture of a person lifting weights to put on the refrigerator as a reminder. I finally took it down during Thanksgiving Week…I had not been once this year! You might have just as much trouble with these resolutions as I do. However, January is a great time to organize your records. It’s cold, you can’t ski every day, and your friends are in Florida emailing you with weather updates. Let’s start with how long you need to retain your financial and tax records. For a complete list of what records to retain, visit our website. However, here are a few general rules. The statute of limitations – that is the period of time that the IRS can adjust your returns – is 3 years from the filing date of your return. However, if they find significant errors, they are permitted to go back 6 years. So, generally, most financial records related to your tax returns should be retained for 7 years. Sort them by
year and put them in labeled envelopes for easy disposal later on. Other records, such as completed tax returns, estate planning documents, and other legal documents, should be retained permanently. Documents related to the acquisition of property or investments should be retained for at least 7 years after the date of sale. Any of these documents can be converted to electronic format rather than retaining paper versions. This is highly recommended for permanent files. For security, be sure to make a semi-annual backup to store in another secure location, such as your safety deposit box. Many of us choose to receive monthly statements electronically. You should be careful to save these documents, in a pdf or similar format, to your own computer. Most institutions do not provide statements beyond two years. And, if you terminate the account, access to the prior statements is immediately terminated. Add these documents to the semi-annual backup stored offsite. And, pictures…yes, I know this
has nothing to do with finances... add those wonderful picture files to your offsite backup routine. Do you really want to lose all of those goofy holiday photos? The second most important step to organizing your records is the proper disposal of confidential records. The cost of a good quality shredder is far less than the cost of recovering your identity from an unscrupulous individual. Anything that contains your financial information, social security number, account numbers or other sensitive information should hit the shredder. Finally, 2012 should be the year that you consider using a software application to manage your financial records. Once established, it becomes an easy routine. This is particularly important if you maintain rental properties or have a small business. At year-end, everything will be well organized for tax time. The total assessment value is broken down into values and descriptions for building, other improvements, and land. *I believe the site is still under development for Nelson as much of the information is incomplete with descriptions of “unknown” or “not on file”. In addition the acreages are not accurately reflected; for example, a 1.05 acre parcel is currently reading as a .105 acre parcel. When this site is fully operational it will be a very
handy resource! NelsonCountyGIS.org Geographic Information System (GIS) site provides public access to tax and mapping information. The “Find” feature allows you to pull up a tax map or parcel number to see an aerial view of the land. The “Layers” function enables the user to overlay maps that distinguish features such as boundaries, structures, roads, streams, flood plains, and more. Information and maps can be exported into Excel and PDF formats for saving and emailing. Nelson.k12.va.us School contact information and calendars are easily accessible. Statistical data can also be found for total enrollment, class size, attendance, student/teacher ratios, and average SOL and SAT test scores. Jaw Dropping Fruit for Two From my childhood days I can vividly remember the harvest months of blackberries, cherries, strawberries and of course peaches and apples. Although my recollection of some of the harvest was more a chore than a delight (I mean who looks forward to picking acres and acres of peaches and apples), looking back I can still taste the tree or vine ripened fruit on a hot summer afternoon or evening. That’s the key – tree or vine ripened. The absolute apex of sugar content in the fruit. So how hard could it be to do this on your own? Easier than you may think if you prepare the soil, choose proven varieties and control the varmints that have your fruit in their cross hairs. Start with two that are on the easier side – strawberries & blackberries. One of the easier groups to tackle is strawberries. First remember they are just perennials so you can take some of the knowledge that you may have gained in these columns and apply it to these plants. Soil prep is an absolute must and your ‘Sam Dirt’ (or the recipe that we use for landscape beds) can handle ALL of the nutritional needs the first year. The timing of the planting is in the fall, not spring, on slightly raised beds (about 4-6 inches taller than the surrounding area) that drain properly. Low lying areas should be avoided at all costs as they freeze or frost out too much. You should mulch with straw both upon planting AND in the spring just before they break out with new growth and their runners – fall to protect the roots; spring to protect the fruit from touching the ground. Yes, you can get into sprays, drenches and a host of other insecticides if you like but here, we don’t spray at all. The key, again, is soil prep on a NONlow lying area with proper mulch, 2 times a year. The rest is jaw dropping strawberries with minimal, if any real pressure from animals (I am sure that
deer would love to get into my orchard but three German Shepherds keep them at bay). Your pH should be around 6. About 10-15 plants will give you plenty of berries for two. No summer is complete without blackberry cobbler and with all of the newer varieties on the market, it will not take long to find just the right mix. Don’t overdue your research; pick a couple of early, mid-season and late varieties and move on. You should prep your soil in the fall for an early spring (March) planting and, again, if you prep the soil properly, many of the headaches can be avoided - in the least, till the area. Install the berries on about 3-4 foot centers in a straight line since they will need support to carry the weight of the berries in the summer. Mulch as you would your landscape plants. The key to blackberries is food, and I mean the same amount that you would put on sweet corn. Feed heavy in March, April and May in a similar fashion as to how we feed grass in October, November and December. By spreading out the feeding, the plant has numerous opportunities to capture the maximum amount of food and then ‘translate’ this into both higher fruit sets and larger berries. Water as you would any landscape plant during the summer – preferably with soaker hoses so as to prevent foliar and fruit diseases. During the first year it is optimal to NOT allow any fruiting to occur. You can achieve this by pruning off the flower buds in the spring and early summer. Every year, prune heavy in the late winter to select strong canes that will carry the largest fruit for the year. If you Google pruning blackberries, many resources are available to aid in this process. Put down your sprayer – this group is also pretty resilient to most diseases and insects. Your pH should be around 6 or so. About 6 plants is all you will need for 2 adults. Happy New Year!

asktheDr. By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I am having terrible heartburn. What can I do to help? I really don’t like taking medications. Heartburn is a common problem which affects about 20% of people at least once a week. Heartburn is a burning sensation in the front of the chest that is usually worse when you lie down or bend over. When food moves into the stomach it passes through the lower esophageal sphincter that acts as a one way valve. Once in the stomach the food mixes with acid. The problem occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter is not working and food moves back into the esophagus. The stomach likes acid – the esophagus does not! Most people have certain triggers that cause their heartburn. Caffeine, tobacco and alcohol are frequent triggers, as are spicy foods, tomato based foods, sodas, mints. When heartburn is severe enough to be disruptive to your routine it is called Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. Risk factors for GERD include pregnancy and obesity which raise the pressure in your abdomen and push stomach contents
back up into the esophagus. There are a lot of medications for heartburn. Over the counter medications can be safely used for occasional symptoms. There are many different prescription medications available that usually work very well. Having frequent heartburn can be a risk factor for esophageal cancer. Sometimes people have heartburn that is actually due to heart problems. It is best to be evaluated if your symptoms are frequent or severe. Before turning to medications on a regular basis I encourage you to try some other treatments. Avoid known triggers. Eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. Stop smoking. Lose weight. Elevate the head of your bed several inches so that gravity can prevent the reflux. Eat smaller meals and don’t eat for several hours before lying down. A New Year Usually this January column is filled with ideas for New Year’s resolutions. Not this year. Perhaps, it is because my mind is on other things this season, perhaps I’m wising up a bit as I get older, or perhaps it is because most of the time, the resolutions are nearly impossible to keep. So why all the fuss each year? It is a time of year when one reflects on the past year and yearns for better things in the New Year. A time for optimism; turning the page for a new beginning and letting go of the past year. A time of hope. Thich Nhat Hanh writes: “Every morning, when we wake up, we have twenty-four brand new hours to live. What a precious gift!” That is true. So this year, my recommendations include being kinder to yourself when it comes to your health. Do try to exercise five days a week but don’t criticize yourself for missing a day here or there. Sometimes, when clients see me out in the community, I evoke some horrible guilt reaction
about exercise because folks often apologize to me for not exercising. No apologies are necessary- life happens! We are human. We tend to be our own toughest critics. The important thing is to keep exercise a regular part of your routine over a lifetime. No crash diets this year- they rarely are successful long term; you’ll lose weight then gain it back and more. Try eating slowly appreciating each bite of food as it if were your last morsel. Savor the flavor. Over time, you’ll notice you’ll eat less food. Choose and prepare delicious meals so that each meal is a celebration. This is possible with quick meals also. I served my kids a dinner of leftovers in several colorful small dishes to make if fun for them and my eight year old son exclaimed, “This is a feast!” Strive for five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. You will have less room in your belly for junk food and you will feel better. Wellness and health are a combination of many factors: nutrition, ex-

Cheryl Tompkins ran the Stoney Creek Pharmacy for years and years – it wasn’t just her job, it was her passion to provide a listening ear and a helping hand to the Nellysford community. But earlier this year, Cheryl had to put her health first and cut back the pharmacy’s hour – something she didn’t like to do. So, after a while of running the pharmacy herself, Cheryl decided to sell the shop to some former colleagues: Dave Garber of Waynesboro and Joe Yeager of Fishersville. The three met years ago at a CVS and Dave and Joe are both pharmacists who already own several pharmacies in the area. ack in 1975, as a ski instructor at the newly developed Wintergreen Resort, Jeffery Caudill was living the college student’s dream. Thirty years later, his life has taken many turns, and now brings him home again to the mountains of his youth to discover his calling through Winterwoods Homes. The vision for Winterwoods Homes came to him one night in a log home on a 23 acre farm covered with snow. When he returned to Wintergreen, the vision came back with clarity. Back in May, Bryan Ferren talked to this magazine about putting together a girls’ team for the Nelson Express Travel Soccer (NETS) club. The U-14 Girls’ NETS Team had no trouble coming together and definitely had no trouble playing together – the team went undefeated in their league this fall. “I think this year they really came together as a team,” said Coach Bryan. “They started playing together as one unit and they worked very hard from the standpoint of how to support one another on the field.” Even though the team is U-14, Bryan coaches girls as young as 11 and as old as 15. There are also three boys’ NETS teams. They play again in the spring when Bryan is hoping to have more girls – maybe even enough to have two teams by next fall. Soccer, said Bryan, is a great way to help both girls and boys to be part of a team and to work together to accomplish something. “As they continue to get older, they can build on [those accomplishments] and build relationships,” he said. His players, including 14-year-old Sakaya Perrie and 11-year-old Mackenzie Ladd, definitely agree. “It’s really good teamwork because the older girls always help us a lot with our strategies,” said Mackenzie, who played recreational soccer for a few years, but enjoys NETS (a travel league) quite a bit more. “It’s a lot more complicated, I would have to say,” said the Nelson Middle School 6th grader. “Because in travel, you’re going against a lot of teams different than in rec. I love playing travel soccer.” Sakaya, who is in 8th grade and is homeschooled, had only played rec soccer before NETS, too. She joined the team to work on her soccer skills while meeting new people. She said that winning all those games in the league was pretty awesome, but that even losing – which they did only twice at a tournament in Virginia Beach, where they placed 2nd overall – wasn’t that bad. “One thing that made it amazing and that I love is that everyone on the team is really great and our coaches are awesome,” said Sakaya. “It was nice to have a more challenging division to play in and it was really just amazing to be part of the team and always go to the games.” Both girls plan on playing on the NETS league again in the spring and encourage any other soccer lovers – boys or girls – to think about it, too. Their goal for the spring? “To come in first if we go to the beach,” said Mackenzie. “I think we could beat that team.” NCL

“Boomie and Peter, it’s like they own some huge ship there in the theater and they set out each year to explore all sorts of exotic ports and all kinds of challenging ports: classic plays, new plays, exotic plays,” said Earl Hamner, writer of the hit TV series, The Waltons, which is based on his Great Depression-era Nelson County Upbringing. “But they always come to home port with The Homecoming,” he said. The Hamner Theater, run by co-artistic directors Boomie Pedersen and Peter Coy, began its run of live theater in 2005 with a production of The Homecoming, a 1971 CBS Christmas special that eventually led to The Waltons. In this, the 40th anniversary year of the television special and the five production of the show at The Hamner, every show sells out. “What comes through is a great story,” said Boomie, the show’s director, “What comes through is the value of family. There’s something about this story that just makes you say, ‘What I have now is pretty good,’ and that everyone is essentially human.” Plus, said Boomie, this play has a special place in the hearts of Nelson County natives. “This is their play,” she said. “And it’s not just for the people to come watch; it’s for people to participate.” Earl said the participation of locals is what makes this production so special for him. A few years ago, he got to experience his words come to life in a very special way.

“I was there once and as a special evening, Boomie and Peter put together a special reading,” he said. “I got to hear my words being said by Nelson County children, which was very special.” In this year’s 32-person cast (the 21-character play is double cast for most children’s parts and few of the adult roles, as well), the vast majority are played by locals. Dad Michael Manthey has a daughter, nieces and nephews in this year’s production. His daughter Ella plays Pattie-Cake Spencer in the “Curly Hair Cast” while his niece, Savanna Averitt, plays the same role in the “Straight Hair Cast.” “I got a really neat perspective because I’ve seen both casts,” said Michael. “It was a totally different show both times with the same meaning… the overall story is just great and I really enjoy the fact that Ella got to learn about the 1930s and that there wasn’t always an iPad sitting there.” Michael, who has been in productions himself, said it was much more nerve-wracking to watch his seven-year-old get up on stage. “It’s scarier, but it turns out this is really her niche,” said the proud papa. “Most of the people were walking out crying because of how meaningful the play was to them, but I think I was crying because of Ella.” NCL
