Whoever coined that phrase to describe the typical human life cycle nailed it.

If I become like baby Peyton when I’m old and pruny, it won’t be so bad.

I’ll have two bottom teeth I am very proud of. First in, last out.

With those two teeth I can eat bananas, french toast, scrambled eggs, Asian pears, rice, black beans, cherry tomatoes, pork meat balls, and salmon.

When I open my mouth revealing what I’ve been working on, strangers will look at me and smile.

I’ll demand real milk. None of that chalky stuff they make ol’ geezers drink. And if I don’t get it, I’ll pitch a fit and throw my cup to the floor.

I’ll go to bed early, at about 7:00 PM, waking up in the morning with nice drool stains on my sheets.

We can see Daddy aging into a young Adam. Whereas Adam’s current mission is to memorize the lines in The Muppets Take Manhattan, daddy will move his lips to On Golden Pond.

He’ll surround himself with cute little baby sitters and ask to be held.

Probably because mommy will be too busy showing people what mashed

up rice and beans looks like in her mouth.

Like their children did in 2011, they’ll hang out in the den after dinner talking to each other in a language only they understand. Then maybe one of their grand kids will toddle into the room, tug on a pant leg and smile at them with a tooth or two.

Debunking Sweet Wines Thomas Carlyle said that if changes and contradictions didn’t occur within us, we stagnated, and I have to agree with him (and would regardless…even if I didn’t…to justify my own capricious contradictions throughout life.)

When learning about wine, the novice often begins with white wine or sweet white wine and after a while, if persevering with this course of study, discovers the wonderful and nuanced world of red wine. Here many wine drinkers can linger, spending decades (3 1/2 in my case), practically disdaining any other wine: white, rosé, sweet, sparkling, until a time, often well into middle-age, when the palate reawakens to white wine and even sweet white wine. My friend Jim shares my palate and preference in wines and this pattern has befallen both him and me. Another friend and great oenophile always answers the same way when asked his favourite wine. “TBA,” he will say with alacrity, which is the easy way of saying Trockenbeerenauslese, the sweetest, richest and most luscious German

botrytized wine. For years in Paris I would order red wine with any meal.

If I ordered a flaky fillet of sole, the waiter tried to persuade me into a beautiful Chablis and I’d shake my head, knowing what I preferred, and order Pinot Noir. Obstinacy and ignorance can, if not necessarily, go hand in hand with youth and exuberance; I’m now older and, I hope, wiser and more flexible in my opinions. While I still prefer red in most instances, I’m open to the possibility of white with many dishes, for white wines have the benefit of often higher acidity which can mean beautiful pairings with a variety of foods.

So, sweet wines, once the domain of the beginner, come full circle.

The French have long revered sweet white wines and often serve them as an aperitif because the alcohol and sugar stimulate the digestive juices preparing you for dinner and helping you to digest. Note, too, that some of the most age-worthy wines are sweet whites, such as Riesling or Sauternes.

Point in case, last week I was given a bottle of opened and re-corked 1959 Château d’Yquem (!) and it was still

Monmousseau Vouvray, 2009 – Vouvray is a versatile wine, made from the Chenin Blanc grape, called Pineau in the Loire, and can be dry, demi-sec, (‘off’ or ‘half’ dry) or moelleux (sweet). The days sometimes begin an hour after midnight and a work week is typically six days long. Everything from baguettes to hamburger rolls are baked from scratch and fill the rooms in the farmhouse the Hellermans use for a home and bakery, but more often than not the goods are sold faster than they can restock the shelves.

“We rarely have product just sitting there. People know us and they recognize the bread,” Nancy said. “Customers ask for things and we try it out. If they like it, we keep going.”

In addition to the constant baking on the farm, the Hellermans themselves have experienced some of nature’s goodness recently when they were blessed with their own little bun in the oven. The newest addition to the farm, David J. Hellerman, has

given a whole new meaning to term “locally made”.

“He’s been a lot of fun, just happy all the time. And we are with him all the time. He’s in here [in the bakery] and out there [on the farm] walking with us. We’ve even noticed that his energy feeds off of the farm,” said John.

David isn’t the only surprise the Hellermans have encountered on the farm, however. The couple purchased the farm in 2005, but it wasn’t always a bakery.

“We actually started with produce, but then we had problems with deer that we didn’t expect, so we started selling muffins at the farmers market with the little bit of veggies we had left,” Nancy explained.

Being the main mixer and shaper, Nancy takes full credit for the idea that rose to the challenge.

“Baking was actually my idea,” said Nancy who has a family history of baking. “My great grandfather had a chain of bakeries in Chile. I remember hearing about him growing up from my mom who told me stories about how popular his breads were. It’s kind of fun. Maybe it’s something that’s in my genes.”

Nancy isn’t the only one with natural talent running through her veins, though.

“My mom’s side was all dairy farmers,” John mentioned. “We spent a lot of time on a remnant of the farm.”

Aside from dairy and helping out with her new grandson, it turns out John’s mother also has a knack for baking. Not only does she wake up as early as three in the morning to help Nancy bake, she also has some recipes of her own.

“My mom had recipes that she made when I was a kid like chocolate zucchini muffins, spiced pumpkin muffins and carrot muffins. We’re thinking about getting them going again. All veggies, things we can grow in the garden,” said John who spends his time keeping the farm under control, and coordinating deliveries to area groceries and eateries.

Cutting the 30 acres of pasture on the farm is no small task, but John would also like to have the garden back in business before the end of the year.

“The biggest thing for us is that we are trying to do an alternative to factory products. Bread in grocery stores is engineered to last for months, which is pretty unnatural. Ours is just a genuine, natural product,” John said. “And it’s exciting that we have so many people interested in this local thing.” NCL

When Bill Bonilla was in high school, he ran track all year long.

“I wasn’t the most gifted distance runner, but I did it for the foundation – the aerobic foundation – so that when I ran indoor and outdoor track, the sprints, I was able to do a work out that would be fresh.”

The young, athletic man from New Jersey was into some other sports, too, but after high school he – like many former athletes – found it difficult to stay in the routine of exercising.

“The older I get, the better I used to be,” Bill jokes.

Bill, who lives in Woods Mill and does residential architecture, is like many people who work and grow up and fall out of sports. But unlike many other people, Bill suffered a hunting injury at the age of 35 that resulted in paraplegia.

“My quads work somewhat and I have a little hamstring,” he explained. “No gluteus, nothing below the knees.”

Bill remembers being in the hospital and wanting nothing more than to get back to exercising and, despite all the obstacles he has to face, he certainly has gotten back to it. And he is now one of the community’s strongest exercise advocates.

“I just want to see more people doing things,” he said. “Everybody has a goal – just go forth and do it.”

Bill built his current home in 1994 and for a long time, one of the biggest obstacles to getting to the gym

regularly was getting all the way into Charlottesville and making time for a work out. Then he started going to the Anytime Fitness in Crozet and now that there’s one open in Lovingston, he couldn’t be happier.

“This one here in Lovingston really fills a vacuum,” said Bill. “There’s a definite need. What a great place for a gym. It’s going to do a world of good for the community.”

Bill says that since there hasn’t been a gym in the community for quite some time, many people might have felt as though it was too difficult to make time for a workout. But the new facility, he says, will have a really positive influence on people who live nearby.

Bill says that it’s important to acknowledge that as we age, we’ll never be as healthy or as fit as we were as teenagers, but setting goals and working toward them will never cease to be important.

Nick Harris, the owner of the Lovingston Anytime Fitness has been working out with Bill for many years (and claims that Bill can do nearly 350 pull-ups in 30 minutes).

Nick definitely agrees with Bill that exercising is key.

“It’s just important overall to quality of life,” he said. “Each day you wait, you’re one day older when you finally do [get back to exercising].”

“Seventy-five percent of it is just getting there,” said Bill. “Once people get in there and work out, they’re always glad they did.” NCL

The last few months at Blue Mountain Brewery have been madness, says owner Taylor Smack.

“Of course we have two projects going on right now,” he said.

“I’m standing in our new 5,000 square foot restaurant expansion.”

In addition to the two-story restaurant that Taylor hopes will open in September to give the brewery a whole lot more space, Blue Mountain is also working on a 10,000 square foot production facility in Colleen to open sometime next year.

Both are something that Taylor says he and his wife, Mandi, “realized early on was going to be necessary – it was a no brainer.”

The restaurant expansion will also allow the brewery to host special events like weddings, parties, and a Tuesday night movie night – a “Brew & View.” They’ll also be expanding the menu, but definitely staying big on the local.

DEVILS BACKBONE’S NEW FRONTIER: THE OUTPOST This year, Devils Backbone Brewing Company will brew 800 barrels (that’s 1,600 kegs). Next year, that number will climb to 10,000 barrels.

“In craft breweries, there has been a lot of growth across the country,” said DBBC owner Steve Crandall on his way to their new 15,000 square foot production facility. “In this down economy, one of the bright spots has been craft breweries – it’s all about local.”

Steve says they’re not aiming to ship across the country, but the response to the DBBC beers has been “phenomenal” so they definitely need another brewing outlet (that’s where Rockbridge County’s “Outpost” comes in), though the Nelson County “Base Camp” will definitely still be brewing.

In addition to bottling, kegging, and canning, the new DBBC facility will boast daily tours, merchandise, and a tap room. Steve said he hopes to start brewing the first ale in early December. NCL – JENNIE TAL WILLIAMS HEIDI CRANDALL

Before you jump into the rental pool, you’ll want to consider the tax issues involved.

Just a Few Days – If you rent your property for 14 days or less per year, no reporting is required and any rental proceeds are tax free! If your property otherwise qualifies as a second home, you can usually deduct the mortgage interest and taxes on Schedule A. Vacation Home Treatment - If part of the home is used by you or your relatives personally, you must maintain records of the number of rental days and the number of personal use days. The expenses will be prorated between the two.

Mortgage Payments are Not Deductible – Instead of deducting the principal portion of the mortgage payment, a deduction is allowed for depreciation of the building and improvements. In addition, you may deduct the interest, insurance, and taxes.

Tax Losses May be Limited – Rental property is normally considered a passive activity – that

Qualifying for a USDA Rural Housing Loan with NO Down Payment

Nelson County has so much to offer, and just in case you needed yet another reason to call our area home, here it is. Nelson County is a qualifying rural area within the USDA government insured loan program helping rural communities by making real estate more affordable. Even though the “everybody buys” approach to lending is a thing of the past and lending practices and standards have become more stringent, there is hope for many cash-poor home purchasers. With a USDA loan, qualifying buyers can buy a home with no money down.

Even in this day and time, it is 100% possible to get 100% financing!

If you would like to own a home, but thought you may not qualify, this may be your “window of opportunity” to literally get your “foot in the door”! Here are the specifics of the loan program and qualifications:

Advantage: No down payment required, competitive 30 year fixed rates, can finance closing costs, no mortgage insurance, no cash contribution required from borrower, gift funds permitted, no maximum loan amount, etc…

Requirements: Applicant cannot own another dwelling, must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident or qualified alien, must be of legal capacity, and must use purchase as primary residence.

Credit History: Credit history must reflect a willingness to pay debt obligations upon due date. A minimum credit score of 620 is typically required.

Income Limits: Applicant must not exceed the moderate income limit established for the area. In Nelson County the annual income cap is $83,750 for a 1-4 person household and $110,550 with a greater than 4 person household.

Qualifying Ratios: While other

Property Requirements: A property within a qualifying rural area can be modular or stick-built, as well as resale or new construction, and in all cases must meet USDA standards to include local and state codes.

Condos, townhomes, and some new manufactured homes may qualify.

Not allowable: previously occupied manufactured homes, construction draws, furniture and personal property, income producing property, non-essential buildings and land.

Closing Costs: There is a guar-

antee fee of 3.6% of the final loan amount. Fee is typically financed along with other closing costs. There is no cap on seller concessions.

(With a properly structured purchase contract which included seller paid closing costs, one local lender had a qualified home purchaser only bring $5 to the closing table!)

Other Considerations: purchase contract will most likely require seller paid closing costs, property must appraise, 40+ days to close, potential seller repair expense if home does not meet the USDA standards, etc…

Of Broken Bones and Tough Mountain Women STORY by LYNN COFFEY

Originally I had something else for my September column but because of a slip on our porch that was wet from a sudden rain, a broken foot resulted. I am currently weaving around on a pair of crutches and a homemade wheelie machine that my thoughtful husband made for me to scoot around the cabin on. I got to thinking about another column I wrote years ago for the Backroads about how tough the mountain women are.

My up-the-road neighbor, Peggy Campbell is a prime example. Peggy hit an icy patch on her tree stand and took a long fall to the ground.

She was hunting by herself and broke all kinds of bones yet managed to crawl down the mountain to her home before calling her brother to take her to the ER. Long before she was fully mended, Peggy was out feeding her chickens and hauling in wood for the woodstove.

Or Gladys Coffey, an exceptional woman in her 80s who took a spill down the basement steps one night. Her fall couldn’t have happened at a worse time. The blizzard of 1997 was one of the deepest snows we’ve had for decades and when her daughter Judy called to ask if we’d go up and check on her mother because “something just doesn’t sound right” after talking on the phone with her. The normal 10 minute trip to Reed’s Gap took us 45 minutes that night and the snow had drifted so high we had to walk up her steep lane to get to the house. Amid protests, we finally persuaded Gladys to make a trip to the hospital. Trudging over hip-high drifts, Gladys, ever the trooper, leaned on Billy and me as we walked down to our truck, commenting on how beautiful the stars were that night! X-rays revealed three broken shoulder bones that the doctors were doubtful she’d ever recover from. Less than a year later, Gladys was building shelves in her closet and repainting her bedroom a different color.

Then there’s Jerry Lou Hanger, a girl who lives just down the mountain from me. Jerry was working in her garden one summer and skidded down a slick embankment and broke her leg. Like Gladys’, her lane is a long and winding path full of rocks and ruts that’s hard to traverse even on a good day. But Jerry Lou climbed in her truck and drove herself to the hospital where a walking cast was put on the offending leg. If you don’t think this was such a big deal, try driving a stick shift and pushing in the clutch with a broken leg!

And then there’s my late mother-in-law, Annie Coffey. Annie took a spill outside but never told anybody. When I commented on her swollen ankle, she confessed she’s sprained it. She never went to the hospital but continued to soak it in Epsom salts every day. Six weeks later she went for her regular checkup and told the doctor her foot was sore. X-rays were ordered and I remember him coming back into his office laughing and shaking his head saying, “Mrs. Coffey, you’ve had a broken ankle.”

When she asked if he was going to put a cast on it he told her no, the bone had already healed straight. What he did say however was, “You women on that mountain are sure tough!”

I’ll finish by telling the story of Becky Hite who lives over in Chicken Holler. Becky works the night shift at Hershey and one night her truck stopped at the top of the mountain so she decided to walk the mile home. I commented to her husband Mark, that at least it was a clear night with a full moon. His reply? “Yeah, but she said she would have enjoyed it more if she hadn’t been wearing clogs!” NCL

likened to a runway at an airport – all of those that ‘approach’ must follow these lines, typically in an ebb and flow pattern. It is imperative that the lines you create, even as simple as the border of grass to your landscape beds, be long flowing lines and not zig-zags - my rule of thumb is that if you can drive them with your SUV, they are good lines. Without grass, these lines are still easily maintained by either a ‘groomed’ groundcover, a carefully placed path, a stone border or any landscape item or plant that aids in creating a long and flowing line. When one of these borders, whether stone, grass or groundcover, turns sharply a potential room is created – the best of which is the landscape ‘cul-de-sac’ which only has one way in and one way out (similar in structure to that of a subdivision).

The walls of the ‘room’ are typically a structure (shed, pergola, etc.), 3 trees nested in the bottom of the cul-de-sac in a triangular pattern or a grouping of shrubs that accentuate the entire turn. No matter the setup, one common thread must take you into and out of this area. As you now seek to place your hardscape, the focal point for the entire room, pay attention to how your eyes follow into and out of the area. The key is that as you follow the ebb and flow of your landscape edges, the eye naturally moves to your hardscape – typically found at or near the base of the cul-de-sac. Incorporating a seat into an area serves as a wonderful focal point, even if it is never used for sitting. I find that destination gardening really elevates the landscape to a new level no matter the season.

Locating hardscapes can be fun.

My favorite place to locate these focal points is auctions, flea markets and antique stores. ‘The find’, which is always accompanied by a story, is part of the mystery and magic of my landscape!

Destination Gardening This time of year it is easy to be feeling a little discouraged about your yard and garden. After a hot, dry summer the lawn can be brown and your flowers colorless. As a landscape designer I am particularly self conscious about my yard and like to keep it looking good for any potential visitors, so August can be a depressing month. However recently I had a visitor that helped me see my landscape through new eyes and look beyond that brown patch of grass and tired coneflower. This visitor was immediately attracted to our property and the many different ‘rooms’ found within. I really stood back and examined the ‘whats’ and ‘wheres’ of destination gardening and their value to your home landscape.

When you look out and see your landscape, what is the first thing you see? For me it is instant and is always a hardscape; a stone rooster sitting amidst the hydrangeas, a birdbath surrounded by hosta, a stone wall bordered by fescue, a birdhouse in the perennial border. These hardscapes are the focal points of my garden and are the foundation of the room that I try to create. Without these landscape items, my landscape becomes a sea of amorphous color and subdued textures and lines that cannot control the wandering eye. Subconsciously your eyes search for definition and hard lines – something to focus on. Once the focal point is added, add sweeps of color and greenery to complement the hardscape. During a European jaunt in 2001, I visited Giverny, Monet’s personal garden in France, and was captivated by ‘the bridge’ (hardscape) sitting above a sea of blooming water hyacinths (color) – an image that still decorates my mind. Build your landscape around similar images and concepts.

By Dr. Charles Cole Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Cole, I have been hearing about local cases of whooping cough. Should I worry about this?

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious infection and there have been cases in the area recently.

It can affect people of all ages, but the most serious complications are seen in children less than 1 year of age.

Pertussis is a bacterial infection.

The early stage is similar to a cold with nasal congestion and a mild cough.

After 1-2 weeks the coughing really begins with fits of rapid coughs that may be followed by vomiting. The fits are sometimes, but not always, followed by a deep intake of air – the ‘whoop.’ This stage lasts 6-10 weeks.

In the third stage the person gets better, but may still have coughing fits.

Pertussis can cause serious complications. About half of children under 1 year old need to be hospitalized.

They may get pneumonia, have seizures, stop breathing or die. In older persons the complications are usually related to the cough. They may break ribs, pass out or develop hernias from coughing so hard.

Pertussis is treated with antibiotics which work best when given early.

Treatment may make the illness less severe, and may prevent the spread of infection to others. After 3 weeks of illness, antibiotics are of little use as the bacteria are gone. Treatment is also recommended for close contacts to prevent the spread of illness.

The best prevention for pertussis is vaccination. The pertussis vaccine is combined with diphtheria and tetanus (called DTaP) and is part of the usual childhood series. A booster called tdap is recommended for children entering middle school, or for older children and adults who have not received it previously. Anyone who will have close contact with newborns should have the tdap vaccine. If you have not vaccinated your family against this serious illness, please talk to your doctor. This is one time you do not want to ‘whoop it up!’

Diabetes and Exercise Joyful moments arise often in my profession but I really get excited when clients see the connection between exercise and health. What I mean about the connection is that folks realize that exercise can have a profound impact on wellness which is not the same as just looking good or losing weight. It happens when individuals with osteoporosis increase bone mass or those with arthritis reduce the joint pain or those who have heart disease gain endurance and energy. Recently, Betty Penn has become a believer in managing her diabetes with exercise. Betty arrives cheerfully three days a week for a combination of cardiovascular training and strength exercises. Not only did her blood sugar levels improve but she has improved mobility and has a higher energy level.

Regular strength training and cardiovascular exercise improves many aspects of diabetes. It regulates your body’s use of insulin, it helps to decrease weight and reduces body fat, increases bone density

and strength, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation, reduces risk for heart disease, reduces stress and increases energy level.

I often recommend walking as a form of exercise because it is inexpensive and the scenery is beautiful in Nelson County. The hot and humid weather can deter anyone from exercising outside so try walking for thirty continuously ( this means no stopping to shop) minutes at a Mall or department store. If you can handle the outdoor temperatures, walk in the parking lots of the local schools, the Rockfish Valley trail or RVCC parking lot for a safe and level ground.

If you are not able to walk, there is device called the “Pedaler” which is available in many catalogs. The price varies from $39.95 to $89.95.

The Tillman family – Kathy and Shannon and their three kids, Caroline (14), Violet (5), and Holden (8 months) – spent this year’s family vacation at the Outer Banks with Kathy’s family. It was a wonderful vacation, but it was much shorter - and perhaps a bit less thrilling – than one of the family’s previous trips: a one and a half year sailing trip around the world.

“My husband always wanted to sail around the world – since he was 8 years old,” said Kathy.

“And when we got married, he made me promise we would do it.”

At the time, she said she didn’t have a clue what he was talking about so she agreed, but finally she and Shannon made it happen.

“After I got out of the Navy, it was kind of a normal life and I couldn’t imagine doing that forever so I thought we should really try to do this now,” said Shannon who grew up sailing.

The Tillmans, then just a family of four (Holden was born on land a few months after the family returned), left their Rhode Island home in 2007 and returned to the U.S. in 2010 and promptly settled in Nelson where they now run a Lavender farm and Kathy sells bags (www.thepeonycompany.com)

lot – Caroline remembers a lot of seafood (not her favorite) and Violet remembers homemade cookies, pizza, and ice cream with “weird stuff in it” (you can get a lot of different kinds of fruit when you’re Island hopping!), but the family also got deeper.

“We sat around talking; we talked about Buddhism and philosophical and spiritual things,” said Kathy. “We planned these two new businesses, especially the lavender farm, and we’d read books; I’d read aloud to the family.”

“We were basically all together all the time,” said Shannon, explaining that things were simpler aboard the 54-foot boat. Although the first few months of homeschooling were difficult to adjust to, once Caroline got into an independent study things were much smoother.

“I wasn’t really concerned too much about school,” said Caroline, who will be in 9th grade at Nelson County High School next year. “I only had to work a few hours each day, compared to 8 hours a day. “I was in this little boutique near Capetown and I found this bag and it was beautiful,” said Kathy.

And by the time she was on her way back home, she was resolved to find a way to import them.

“The Townships [in Capetown] are really kind of awful,” said Kathy, remembering the groups of weavers – all women who work from their homes in order to care for their children. “The other great thing about the bags is that they’re made from textile remnants from a T-shirt factory.”

Now back at home selling bags, going to school and cultivating lavender, no one has any real complaints about the sailing trip, but Kathy said the OBX trip had one thing that the sailing trip did not: “I often wished my family and friends were there to share some of the experiences and have fun with us.”

To pass time on the water, the Tillmans cooked a

I ran to see if we sprung a leak but we were fine.

And the whale seemed OK.” Now that everyone is adjusting back to daily life on land, they can’t help but think about their next trip.

They hope to go again for about a year after Caroline finishes high school – after all, little Holden’s never had the chance to see a whale at touching distance. NCL
