Abstract Although to a large extent altered by human activity, European nature has a very large variety of habitats. Natural spacious forests, meadows and pastures, wetlands and unregulated rivers, sea, ground and other habitats inhabited by numerous species, are still rich natural heritage of Europe. However, in recent decades, human impact has become so powerful that it turned into a serious threat to the survival of most of Europe's natural heritage. The diversity of natural and semi-natural habitats is in rapid decline, and numerous plant and animal populations that depend on these habitats are reduced in number and area of its distribution.
