that steak from the grill, or maybe it’s appropriate right before the fireworks start to explain what the Rockets’ Red Glare really means. Go ahead, it will only take a few minutes and may mean a world of difference to someone in your family. BTW – you can Google that too, it’s only third on the list. Anyhow, racing, yes, we do that too. In this issue, find lots of motocross racing. June was a month filled with big races, with a few that didn’t even happen yet by this writing. I’m just back from Miles Mountain and anticipating the youth regional at Doublin Gap this weekend, followed by the Tri District Challenge the next. That means lots of great motocross coverage in our following issue, which will lead us right into the Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals in early August. It’s the middle of summer, and things are red hot. Check out all the schedules and events here in our pages, and thanks again for reading. We’ll see you all at the track. Jim Bull, MRA Editor

Happy Independence Day, everybody, or for those that may not know, its happy Fourth of July. I did a Google search on Independence Day, and thankfully the first response came from Wikipedia explaining that it’s a federal holiday celebrated in the United States to commemorate our adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. Sadly, the next two entries were about a movie made in 1996 about an alien invasion of earth. I know, the Fourth of July is all about the fireworks, parades and Aunt Martha’s chicken BBQ, and many of us get a paid day off of work, to boot. But I would ask each and every one of you to look at it a little deeper this year. To know that if it weren’t for our forefathers with their dedication, morals and beliefs that none of us would probably be racing motocross today. Of course, that’s probably a misstatement. Maybe we would be racing, but only if we were of a particular class or religion, and most definitely the entry fees would be much more -- the king’s tax collectors would see to that. I ask that you take a moment as a family this holiday and teach your kids what it’s really all about before you dig into

Brandon Wolfe soars to the win in the 85 (9-11) C class.

MDRA at Pagoda Motorcycle Club Birdsboro, PA • May 20, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com

70, 80, 90, 110 Mini Track 1. Javion P. Stump

Late May brought us beautiful weather and the racers from both the MDRA 6 and 7 Series for the first of three combo rounds in 2012. The idea is to get everyone together to see who is the fastest in each of their respective classes and to attract more racers because full gates are always more fun. This weekend didn’t disappoint, because the racers came and the action was red hot. The 250 C groups kicked off the day at Pagoda, and racing continued right on through, finishing up with School Boy 2 at the end. Several breaks were needed to control the dust, as the summer heat has started to settle in, but the crew at Pagoda was on top of things as usual. A few standouts on the day included the likes of Brandon Hartranft; Brandon would win seven of his eight motos, being bested only by Rowland Papp in one of the School Boy races. Jeremy Cook was on the gas and looking sharp, winning Open A against some of the best in the business along with a 25 plus A win. Luke Palonicola is emerging as the man to beat this season in the amateur ranks; Luke won both B divisions again on this day. Barry Carsten came out, as Pagoda seems to be one of his favorite stops; he would claim both Vet and Senior A victories. The next stop for a Combo round will be the Tri District Shoot Out at Doublin Gap in the beginning of July, then the last stop will be at Sleepy Hollow in late July. Get all the details at: www.mdramxracing.com.

NEOC Racing – Triple Crown Blue Mountain Ski Resort • May 19-20, 2012 Photos By: Tim Dennis Well, what can I say… as Chucky called this event all weekend……The Nor’easter vs. The Blizzard. We went ten full rounds with this monster of a mountain. We walked away with black eyes, bloody noses, sore jaws, and headaches, but we’re still standing, and there was no TKO! It was a draw. This was a tough one; no doubt about it, and no way to sugar coat it. We were on a mountain made of rocks, you’re gonna have rocks. We were at the top of a mountain, so you’re gonna have to come down a steep hill. We were on a mountain that’s famous for its black diamond ski trails, you’re gonna have a technical course with rocks on the side of a steep hill. That’s just what it was plain and simple. So to all that came and climbed the mountain, we salute you, and to all those that came to climb the mountain because you love and thrive in that element, we bow down before you and give you your just props. I want to send a huge shout out to the Blue Mountain Ski Resort Crew, Jim Dailey and his posse of mountain men are some of the nicest tough guys we’ve met. Your hospitality was great and we appreciate you welcoming us with such open minds the way you did. Thank you for everything! Here are a few of the dedicated course workers the NEOC had on the front lines taking most of the hits from the mountain. They are the muscle and heart of this series. They gave more then they knew they even had. Big T, Cropper, Brian Hill, Dwyer, Big John, Big Dog, Thorn, Kearney, Joe, Brian Jost, Scooter, Vern and Gary, Big Phil, James, Shag and Jim, Jeff and Gomer, Daddy Duke, Keeler, Bart, Lawton and just all the countless people and youngins that pitched in to help and make it a successful event. I can’t even think of all the names, there were so many. All the “mountain goats” that helped get any injured rider or broken-down bike off of the mountain, we thank you. This was another total team effort from all parties involved. This event will go down in the books as the toughest one to date! It was tough, but not tougher then us. MDRA 6 At Sleepy Hollow Fredericksburg, PA • May 26 – 27, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Sleepy Hollow MX hosted Round # 6 of the MDRA 6 Series over Memorial Day weekend at their facility just north of Lebanon, Pa. Again, we had another great day for racing and another good turnout at the gates. Track owner Jere Swarr continues to make changes to his track and is constantly interacting with the racers in an effort to offer an always improving program at the Hollow. The Senior racers brought us to the gate first to kick off the day’s events, with Bob McWhorter taking the win in the A division and Mike Reynolds taking the checkers in the B class. Next up, we saw the 50’s take the track, with young Kyle Schlemmer adding a couple notches to his wins column and Dominic Amilcare swapping moto wins with Chris Sweeney to win the older group. Sweeney would go on to win the 50cc Open division as well, putting on a show and being the only 50cc rider on the day to do the big double down in the bottom. Luke Palonicola would continue to show the amateurs around the track. Even with having to start backwards on the gate for a practice infraction, he would win both divisions on the day. Jeremy Cook, who I believe may be soon approaching the Vet mark, continues to put a full-on assault on the expert divisions. Cook has been around for a while now but only shows signs of getting faster as the season continues. Jeremy has always been a true competitor but seems to have definitely stepped up his game a level in 2012. Next stop back at the Hollow will be a MDRA combo round in late July. June 13, 2012 AMA staff member Joe Bromley presented this prestigious award to Bernie Bredbenner, who is the promoter and founder of the Motorcycle Miracle Tour, during the District 6 June meeting held at the Lebanon Valley Motorcycle Club. Bernie, who hails from Williamsport, PA, started the tour in 1986, which is a motorcycle fundraising event that benefits the Children’s Miracle Network and the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger Health Center in Danville, PA. Our thanks go out to Mr. Bredbenner for being a pioneer and having the heart to help so many children from the area over the years. The business meeting of the Sports Association followed a brief question and answer session with Mr. Bromley. The District 6 Sports Association is comprised of 50+ clubs and promoters from Central and Eastern PA. District 6--proudly promoting AMA Sanctioned Motorcycle and ATV events for more than 50 years. About the award: Hazel Kolb was dubbed the “Motorcyclin’ Grandma,” as she was famous for her perimeter ride around the United States in 1979 on her HD Electra Glide. The ride garnered national attention as Kolb went on to be an ambassador to the sport as she helped change the image of motorcyclists nationwide.

13 450 Sportsman: 1st (65) Cory Texter; 3rd (77A) Eric Stump; 4th (75A) Rick Winsett

Texter Doubles at Gratz Half Mile • By Len & Ben Breech • GRATZ, PA. MAY 19 Cory Texter made the most of the chance to race his race-framed RLT Racing/Englehart/Herrs/Invisible Glasssponsored Honda at a slight cushion, half-mile horse track by easily winning both the 450 Sportsman and Open Expert classes at the Baer Racing Products sponsored Gratz Fairgrounds. This track brings smiles to old time racers in the Mid-Atlantic area, as it was typically the only half-mile track they raced on after racing TT Scrambles most of the time. The Open A had Texter jumping into the lead over Eric Stump, Evan Baer, Shawn Baer, Jason Isennock and Corey Crawford as he started pulling away. After trailing his younger brother for a few laps, Shawn got by Evan as they entered one on the fourth lap. After pressuring Stump for second most of the remainder of the race, Shawn got under him into three on the final lap. Texter ran off and hid from the 450 Sportsman field, leaving Rick Winsett, Stump, Shawn Baer, Crawford and Evan Baer to battle for second. Shawn took second on the seventh lap of the twelve-lap final and held off Stump’s probes to the end. Dalton Gauthier took the 250 B lead from Tristan Avery, Colin Cunningham, Ryan Varnes and Cameron Smith. Gauthier and Avery stayed stuck together as they put some distance on the others, with Varnes getting under Cunningham for third 125: 1. Chase Smith 2. Tyler Rylee 3. Chris Thomas 4. Tyler Johnson 5. as they entered three on the fifth lap, where he held on for a close finish over third. The 250 Sportsman was set up a few years ago for 250 B riders to test their ability against some expert riders who still have 250 machines. Experts Roy Miller and Kevin Bills led Cunningham, Avery, Gauthier, Varnes and others in a closely bunched group out of two. Avery started moving on the fourth lap, taking third off four on lap four and second into one just afterwards. Avery took the lead as they finished the sixth lap and put some distance on Miller. Varnes moved into third on the fifth lap and moved up to pressure his uncle for second. He briefly took second off four on the final lap, but lost a little drive and Miller just nipped the kid. After the first start of the 30+ Veteran was red flagged for dust conditions and the track watered again, Kevin Varnes led Roy Miller, Rick Winsett, Rich Heverly, Dallas Baer and Ace Phillips. Winsett used the outside to take second by the end of the opening lap, but that was all he could muster as the former two time National winner pulled out to a straightaway margin by the end. Dave Smith led Tom Majeski, Ray Jenkins, Rick Washak, Robert Crabbe and Brett Friedel at the start of the 45+ Veteran final. Smith and Majeski pulled several lengths ahead 2. Shawn Baer 3. of the others, and Majeski took the lead off four on the sixth lap, but a red came out just after for Washak falling in three. Off the restart, Jenkins moved into second, while Washak moved into third, as Majeski was drained after his battle for the lead. Washak took the 500 2 Valve lead from Smith, Jim Chapman, Jenkins and Greg Lerch. Chapman got by his traveling buddy, Smith, for second, going into one on the fifth lap. They stayed close for the rest of the race, until Smith used a lapper as a pick to retake second between three and four on the final lap. Jason Isennock battled with Rick Winsett for the Open Twin lead, with Majeski and Corey Crawford following. Once in front, Isennock checked out on his Eckhart Triumph, while Majeski slowed in the late laps, letting Crawford past. The Open Vintage was more of an extension of the 45+ class, as almost all the riders and machines were that old. Craig Alcantara put his Yamaha twin in front of Bill Dunn, Jay Maher, Dan Persa and Tom Valentine. Alcantara put some distance on the others at the beginning, but Maher put his Triumph into second off two on the fourth lap, with Persa’s Triumph taking third at the end of the lap. Maher took the lead then as they started the final lap and held on to it for the win. 250 Sportsman 1. Tristan Avery 2. Roy Miller 3. Ryan Varnes 4. Colin Cunningham 5. Kevin Bills 6. MDRA 7 at Doublin Gap MX June 2 – 3, 2012 • By: Jim Mucklin “The way I saw it.” It was my first race back in over a year and what a day to pick, beautiful weather and a trip to a great track. If you have never been to Doublin Gap, you have got to treat yourself, either as a rider or spectator; you can’t go wrong. Even if you don’t race, it’s a great day out, and with the three large observation platforms, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Just a short drive off the Pa. pike, it has been family run by the Yentzers since 1995. It’s nice to see three generations whose lives are devoted not just to the track, but to the sport, and for that, I thank you. They must be doing something right, since as I look around, I see not one, but two gates of 65’s. I can’t remember the last time I saw that. But wait, it’s Loretta Lynn time and these riders and their families came to dial in. As I look at the race results, it’s not just Pa., N.J. and Md., but they came from N.Y. as well, not just Brooklyn and the Island, but from upstate by the big lake. Others came from N.H., Mass., N.C. and even New Orleans and the City of St. Hubert, a lot more than a few hours drive. To the families, I thank you. But I came to see a race, and I wasn’t let down. In the A’s, Schmelyun and Cook. If you want to make these two go faster just put another rider near them; back and forth, great racing. Thanks, guys. 65’s: In the (7-11) B - Davis and Santos finished 1-2 on the KTM’s, while Rogers got a first moto win and looked sharp. In the 65 C, the first 8 bikes were all KTM. The #65 of Kauffman got first, and the #20 of McKie out of QC was there for second, both on the throttle. In the 50’s, I knew when I saw Kauffman, it was a done deal. It was his day, he was focused and looking for the flag. He took first, followed by Kozel and Sweeny. All of the top six were aboard Cobras. The next one I got to watch was the Women’s, often missed (sorry, ladies), but not ignored. Ten ladies were at the gate, with former Motorama winner Tonya Mantsch sporting a #99 plate to throw me off. Nice hole shot, but a crash took her out. It was all the #25 of Atalie Yingling, followed by Williams and West. Thank you, ladies. It was a great day until the second moto race 6, when the sky let loose on the 65’s. I got to see some serious young talent, like the #101 of Pinhancos and the #119 of Schock. I even had time to watch Garlock and Reachard throw down on the 2 strokes and to see Kramer do the (1-1) in CB. I’m looking forward to the 22-24, when they host the LL Youth Regionals. Thunder in the Sand Wildwood, N.J. • June 2-3, 2012 • Photos and text by Scott Lukaitis If there is one race that should be on every Northeast racers bucket list, it has to be the Thunder in the Sand event. It doesn’t matter if you ride a bike or a quad or if you are a beginner or an accomplished racer, this race needs to be at the top of your list. But why the Thunder in the Sand, you might ask? First of all, it takes place on the beach. Yes, you read that right, just yards away from the Atlantic Ocean. The crew at Thunder Moto build a track from the sands on the beach that is suitable for racers from the smallest peewee up to the expert class stars. Reason number two is the relaxed nature of the weekend. Because camping on the beach is allowed, many families take this opportunity for rest, relaxation and racing. They set up their normal pit area just like at every other race track, but being on the beach adds that something extra to the race weekend. Additionally, each class has its first moto on Saturday and second moto on Sunday. The one moto per day format leaves the racers with time and the opportunity to swim, surf or partake in Wildwood’s famous boardwalk. If those reasons aren’t enough, perhaps the great racing action and thrill of slamming a sandy berm will make up your mind. Racing at this year’s event was excellent in all classes, as battles went down to the wire in many of the motos. Former AMA Supercross Lites Champion Jason Lawrence even made an appearance to have fun racing his bike again. The heartbreak of the weekend has to go out to Levi Hicks. After challenging Richard Lindsay for most of the second Quad A moto, Hicks suffered a broken rear wheel and DNF. The race is only held twice a year, once in the spring and then again in the fall. The next opportunity to take part will be on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 and 7. View Event Results Online at: www.McRacingAction.com.

MAMA at Tomahawk MX Hedgesville, WV • June 2 – 3, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com In early June I found myself at the Tomahawk MX Park in the mountains of the West Virginia Panhandle. It was yet another beautiful weekend for racing at round # 6 of 14 in this 2012 series that’s in its 37th year, I believe. Wow, that’s saying something. These days, anything that lasts that long has got to be doing something right. In talking to the MAMA regulars, they have been getting great participation at their events, and this day would be no different. MAMA does things a little differently than most, as they run several classes and some practice sessions on Saturday, then the remainder on Sunday. I didn’t make Saturday’s racing on this weekend, but Sunday’s would not be a disappointment. The action started off in the Mini Women divisions, with the familiar # 34 of Lauren Plate leading the charge. Lauren would win the (7-15) Open division, with Lindsey Randler sweeping the Support class. Next up came the Unlimited class, and I remember when they launched this class early last year. The numbers were slim then, but as we know, persistence pays off. That day’s race saw 21 entries, with William Duffy leading the charge. Duffy would also go on to win the Open A division, which offers a really sweet year end payout if you attend enough events. The day progressed smoothly as the many youth classes of MAMA took the stage. Here, riders can find a class for just about any skill level or bike produced. It’s great to see all those 50 kids hitting the track and knowing that our sport has a great future ahead of it. Check out the results here and get all the details on this great series on the MAMA website at: www. MAMAMX.com. Their next round will be at Blue Diamond in mid-July.

Nick Knell from Pasadena, Md., wins 80 C (12-15).

Proverbs 16: 9 - In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.

Chaplain’s Corner

This is the good news of Jesus Christ.

Get proper training and wear your gear. Yamaha and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) encourage you to take a riding course and to always dress properly for your ride with a helmet, eye protection, gloves and boots. Of course, never drink and ride – it’s illegal and dangerous. For more information on the MSF course, call 1-800-446-9227. Now let’s roll.

Many of us set out with plans for our future and our children’s futures. We set a course for success; we plan, we envision, and we look toward a life full of prosperity. We never look at what may happen during this journey; we never put plans in place to help us with the pitfalls that happen in life. We never take time out to speak with God when we start this journey to make sure we are determining his will be done, so we can live successful lives. Many of us do not know what God really has for us because we never ask. We never take the time to pray for wisdom and discernment, so that we can fully understand God’s will. In our plans, we never see God’s steps, only ours, and when we fall we never see it coming. Many of us have character defects long before we even realize it, many of these character defects were given to us from our parents. The first defect was given to us from our first father, Adam (sin). Since then, we have gotten many defects that we tend to keep from our immediate families. These defects can harm you when you get older and set out in life, even though you have every good intention in your hearts to be good and faithful people of the Lord. Many of us never even know these defects lay beneath the surface and are waiting for the opportune time to make us fall. Like a big boulder lying in the middle of the track, it is the only one there and it is obvious yet it is unseen. God knows it’s there and sees it long before we hit it and go over the bars. The blessing in this soil sample you take is the Grace of God allows us to get back up. See, God cleans away the boulder because he knows your heart, and he will determine your steps, not you or anyone else. When we fall on hard times and our steps do not seem to be working out like we thought, remember that God has plans to prosper you, not harm you. God has plans for your future, a future full of hope and success. God may also have plans to mold you and refine you. He may just be removing boulders or defects before He lets you move on to the plans you set before. If the plans you have are good plans and you keep in prayer and take time out to hear God and be patient, God will give you success in your journey. But never forget that God determines the steps you will take in your journey to success. God may have to refine and purify you so you can do great and many things in the name of the Lord. Brothers and Sisters, be faithful and do not lose hope in your journey. It may be longer than you think, but if you are good and faithful to the Lord, you will find success in all you do. May Christ peace be with you, and may God’s blessings pour out on you.

JULY 2012

Derek Miller (27) returns to racing and goes 3 – 1 for the O/A 250 B win.

MDRA 6 at Happy Ramblers

Kyle Snider wins both Open C and 250 C.

Hanover, PA • June 9 – 10, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com The second week of June we found ourselves back at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in what would be a perfect day for two trips to Amber’s Ice, located down on vendor row. That’s right, the sun was bright, and the heat was up, and both racers and fans alike were doing whatever necessary to stay cool and hydrated. Like always, the crew at Happy did their part by keeping the program moving for the just over 300 racers who came out to race on this day. The 250 A and B groups took us to the gate first, with names like Cook, Corbin, Riden and Toth. That’s Willy, the oldest Toth brother, riding the even older Suzuki two stroke. Willy would pull the first moto win on the day, but as we’ve been reporting, Cook is still the man to beat this season. Riden, who moved up this year, was right there in the mix too, but Cook would hold on for a few more overalls on the day. In 250 B action, we would see the return of Derek Miller back to the Happy course. Derek has been away at college the last few years, but it seems he must have been putting in some laps while he was away; he would go 3-1 for the overall. Next up came the 250 C group, and they thought the object was to see how many riders they could take out in the first turn. About a third of the class got tangled up in what was one of the most horrific first turn pile-ups I’ve ever seen. Luckily, all would be ok, with just some minor bumps and bruises for their efforts. The course would be cleared, and away they went again, with Kyle Snider proving that he is the man to beat in this year’s novice divisions. The day rolled on, and so did the motos. 2012 RACE SCHEDULE

22 JULY 2012

Mitch Knorr wins both novice divisions on the mountain.

MDRA 6 at Miles Mountain June 16 – 17, 2012 • Elkland, PA • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Mid-June took us to Miles Mountain and one of my favorite stops in the series. It’s unfortunate that we only come here twice a year, as the atmosphere and the facility just seem to ease the soul. That’s not to say that racing here is easy, however. At first glance, Miles will entrance you, from the close to 400 feet in elevation changes, to the mountain scenery, to the expert care in the appearance of the facility, and to the friendliness of the staff. It all pulls you in and makes you feel at home. Once on the track, however, you better be prepared to ride, as many first-timers here will attest too. The course is long, the soil deep, and those uphills and downhills will test even the fittest of athletes. Word even has it that a few expert guys are traveling hours to get here just to train for Loretta’s. I was at the first event ever held here at Miles Mountain and though really cool then, I can say that this facility is evolving into one of the finest I’ve ever attended. I would recommend that you make sure and get it on your list, as I know that further improvements are in store. Even for the novice and mini cycle riders, it’s well worth the trip. Though a real motocross course, even the 50 (7-8) guys can make it around the track, and the youngest racers get to compete on the separate track that they race their Saturday night supercross events on. This weekend’s event saw lots of great racing competition all added to by the battles in multiple expert classes between Jeremy Cook and Casey Clark. I’ve been watching these two guys race for years, and to see them go at it at Miles was just a treat. They split the weekend up pretty good with both taking overall wins, but the crowd was just on fire as these two raced fender to fender on both the supercross and motocross courses. It was worth the entry fee just to witness these two warriors go at it. You can get the full schedule of events for Miles Mountain on their website at www.MilesMtnMx.com. I know they have a big FMX show in July, and the MDRA Series will return the first weekend in September. We’ll see you then.

Please let me set the stage by saying that seven years ago it was a “big deal” to see three women riders at a motocross track. Today, that is no longer the case. Seven years ago, Loretta Lynn’s (the most prestigious amateur national in the country) offered only one female class; today there are three! Girls Just Wanna Ride is an event that advocates for women’s motocross with a twist like no other. We are an event that promotes women’s motocross on all levels and celebrates the enormous steps forward that women have taken in the industry. In 2007, our first year, there were 18 female riders, which at the time was a remarkable turnout! I am proud to say this year’s event drew in 58 participants! This inflation marks the highest number of participants to date! This reflects, more importantly, that more women are participating in this wonderful sport! Whether these girls are racers themselves, sisters of racers, first-time riders or moms of kids who race, we are proud that they are riding and welcome them to our motocross community. It is an unexplainable feeling that I had seeing a track groomed like race day, the pit area full of motor homes, trucks, trailers, and a track that was full of riders. The track looked packed with riders just like practice the day of a race, but something was different about this morning. This morning was not a race day; it was the day of Girls Just Wanna Ride. Knowing this alone, that 58 girls gathered to ride together, astonishes me! Over the years, not only has participation from the female riders increased, but support from sponsors from all spectrums of the industry has exploded! Many sponsors come together to help make Girls Just Wanna Ride so gracious to the participants. We have received very rewarding publications in Motorcycle Racing Action, Racer X Illustrated, and Transworld Motocross. With each year, we hope to see more improvements to our event. In just these short seven years, Girls Just Wanna Ride and female motocross has taken off farther than I would have ever dreamt! We hope you take the time to reflect upon the growth and optimism of women in this sport over the years that you have been involved in motocross. As a thank you to Happy Ramblers for hosting our event every year, Girls Just Wanna Ride will be sponsoring the race held on July 14th and 15th. Planning for the 2013 event has begun, but our event date will not be finalized until the beginning of the year! We hope to see you then.

MOTORCYCLE RACING ACTION

Reflecting on a Decade By: Chase Rusden # 95 As I was driving home from a soccer tournament the other day, I happened to pass an old racetrack, and the memories started flowing instantly. It’s been two years since I last took to a starting line, and as crazy as this may sound…it hasn’t really hit me that I don’t race anymore, and I never really took a chance to reflect on so many years of banging bars. People always ask me, still to this day, why I stopped racing and if I miss it. So here is my best attempt to answer that question and to reflect on 10+ years of racing. I started really young…. I can remember going to John Lewis’ house to flat-track on my PW-50 with training wheels, ready to go with a gear bag and a diaper bag. Thankfully, my father was an experienced racer and had the right idea of getting me started with motorcycles as young as possible. At two to three years old, I doubt there was a kid in the whole country as experienced as I was on a dirt bike! That was in 1997-1998. By the summer of 2000, I was ready for my first race. I raced an XR-50 at Pine Grove MX, and my first moto I crashed every single corner. My poor dad had to pick me up in every single corner. He ended up just walking beside me the whole race! Haha. I remember coming off the track crying and wanting to quit, and I easily could have right then and there. Thank God I didn’t; I have no idea what the rest of my life would have been like. Moto two went better, and I think I went the whole race without a crash. At five years old, crashing in every rut and corner really kills your confidence, but I decided to stick with it, and I’m so glad I did. Oh, by the way, props to my dad for not quitting right there either! I can’t imagine what he was thinking in his head that day. My next racing experience was a flat-track race at Path Valley. It just wasn’t for me. Being so young it was so horrible and boring just going in circles and waiting around all day (I definitely wasn’t sliding at that age!). Now I respect flat tracking because I know how hard it is, but I was one and done and onto the next type of racing. I honestly don’t remember what my first harescramble was, but I was immediately hooked. I don’t know whether it was the constant action; being in the woods; rocks, roots, mud, and sand; or riding for a longer time -- I just liked everything about it. It fit me perfectly. By 2002, I was racing regularly and competing in the D-6 series, and in 2003 I won my first championship in the (4-8) 50cc class. For the next few seasons I would race in the D-6 series as well as the PA State HS Series, always doing an MX here and there. I always loved racing at Foot of the Mountain and seemed to do pretty well at Pine Grove whenever we would race there. By 2005 I was ready to move onto bigger and better things, and that year I started racing the ECEA series and hitting a few GNCC’s. With a new series came new tracks, new competition, better competition, and more traveling. I struggled adjusting to the clutch but eventually I got the hang of it. If any of you reading this now just jumped onto the 65…stick with it! I promise it’ll get better really quickly. Anyway I adjusted to the RM and racing became more time-consuming and very quickly turned into my whole life. Every weekend there was a race plus practice a few days a week. It was washing and working on the bikes, the RV, the whole nine. As a little kid, getting to travel was the coolest thing in the world and an experience I’m very thankful I had the opportunity to do. I got to go to some pretty cool places, too. My regular season was based on the east-coast but I raced in 17 different states over the course of the years. I never raced out west though which was always a dream of mine. I can’t imagine doing a WORCS race in the desert…must be sick. Maybe one day I’ll get out there. My first GNCC was in March of 2005 in Florida. What an experience! The big tractor-trailers, the pro riders, TV, all the hype, it was the big time. I loved the buzz and hype of the nationals, and that day I made up my mind that I wanted to be under one of those tents one day. As I hit Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina in a span

of three weeks, I realized the tracks were a lot rougher and the speed of the top guys a lot faster, both of which I would have to adjust to so I could compete. I started the adjustment pretty quickly by working out and mountain biking a lot, as well as playing soccer. Cardio is so key to racing, whether you think so or not. Running is a great way to train but not the only thing I did. I practiced a lot. Any time you can get on a motorcycle benefits you, even if you’re just playing around. Racing every weekend takes a serious commitment. It’s not one of those sports you can just pick up and play for a season out of the year. It needs a serious commitment from you, your parents if you’re still young, and sponsors if you have them. Thankfully, I had both of my parents behind me and a few sponsors, and I’m so thankful for them. I owe the world to both of my parents, especially my dad, who put in an incredible amount of time working on the bikes and getting them ready for the weekend, as well as driving me around all the time. I can’t thank them enough for all that they did for me. Be thankful if you have help like I did! There are so many people I would like to take a moment to thank before I get back to the racing. First off, Dennis Martin of Martin’s Motorsports. My main sponsor while I was racing, he helped me out so much, and I’m very thankful for everything he did for me. Jim Bull gave me the opportunity to write a monthly column in MRA, and it was a great experience for me. Thank you, Jim! Tim Dennis, what a guy! A great photographer and a great friend, I can’t thank him enough for his great work and commitment to racing. If you ever see him around at the track, make sure to check him out! The Hartem family for their commitment to youth racing, they followed their dreams and built a fantastic series. The NEOC has really grown but still sticks to its roots by treating the young’ins right. As a youth racer, I can’t thank you guys enough for all that you did for me! The ECEA and all of its clubs always put on great events -- thank you guys for all your hard work. Shout out to my old club, RORR, for always putting on the roughest race of the year! Hillside Fabrications, Barry Thomas, Timmy Peters. So many friends I want to thank for always being there for me: the Hall Family, the Hills, Horesmans, the Dwyers, the Lores, my “south-Jersey crew” as I call them! Nicest people in the world who always opened their homes to me, and I always had fun when we would go riding. The DeLong family, close friends of mine. Thank you guys for always helping me out! Congrats to Andrew and Craig on all the success the past few seasons. Looking forward to varsity soccer with Craig this year! It’s awesome seeing how fast Andrew has gotten, and he has turned into one of the fastest guys around. The Garvers, always smiling and so helpful. Such a great family. Dan is one of my best friends, and I always enjoyed riding with him and hanging out with the family. The Tenners: Kenny was such a great opponent, and big Kenny always made me laugh. The Willenbrocks: Dieter and I have been battling since I was 4 years old, and it was crazy growing up together and constantly pushing each other to be better on the track. Tegan Temple and Ethan Jaudus were my biggest competitors every weekend and my best friends off the track. The Swavley family, the Huberty family, the Kivelas, the Quinns, the Rodgers, the Schoffelings, the Huffords, the Desimones, the Devlins, the Majors, the Thomas family. Chuck Marriner, such a great guy! The entire staff of the NEOC- you guys are great, and I hope you’re doing well! I know I’m forgetting so many people, and I apologize. I just wanted to thank a few people that have helped me out so much over the years...I miss you all and hope everything is going good for you! Back to the racing. I’ve had the opportunity to race at a lot of different tracks all across the East Coast, and even though I’m a PA rock boy, I always felt at home in the south Jersey sand. I absolutely loved racing in the sand and always seemed to do pretty well in the Pine Barrens. Ormond Farms and Tri-County

were two of my favorite tracks. I don’t know what it was, but everything just seemed to click when I was racing in the sand. However, my favorite place in the world is down in Georgia at Durhamtown Plantation. It’s a racer’s paradise, and I always enjoyed racing and kicking my season off down there. The warm weather, the Georgia clay, the pine trees, southern BBQ, I just love it all. If you’ve never been to DP, you have to go. 10 MX tracks and probably a few hundred miles of single track, it’s awesome. People always ask me what my favorite track was, and I can say Rocket Raceway. It’s a great combination of MX and woods trails, my dream track, and I always did well there, which is why I probably like it so much. I never won at RORR, but I really liked that track, too. After 2005, I would continue to race the ECEA series and a few GNCCs, as well as the NEOC series when it started in 2008. From the 65, I would jump up to the (10-11) 85cc class to the (12-15) 100 class, then to youth AA, where I would win the ECEA overall championship in 2009. That is definitely my proudest racing moment, along with making the podium at the 2007 General GNCC in Georgia. I feel like racing really helped me evolve into the person I am today. I just finished up 10th grade, and I play soccer for my school team as well as F.C. Revolution, based out of Reading. I travel a lot for soccer, much like I used to for racing. I feel like racing and working out give me a little strength advantage. The constant physical demand that racing has on the body and mind has transferred to the soccer field and life in general, and I feel like I can push myself longer and harder than most people. I suffered a few concussions while racing, and I knew if I got too many more I’d end up a vegetable. That’s not the only reason I stopped racing though. It’s very costly and time-consuming, and as much as I loved the weekends getting the bikes ready became a hassle, one I didn’t enjoy. I’m also obsessed with soccer…I can never put a ball down. So I stopped the world’s most physicallydemanding sport for the world’s most popular sport. I have a passion for fútbol that I never really had racing. That being said, racing will always be a huge part of me, and I will never forget an incredible 10 years of banging bars. I made lifelong friends and memories that I hope to keep forever. Some of my most memorable moments racing were the ECEA youth championship, getting on the podium at a GNCC, doing a road race at NJMP, meeting Travis Pastrana, traveling, doing “gravity-cavity” at Unadilla, racing in a hurricane in North Carolina, and getting passed by the pros in the GNCC main events! I will never forget the people I’ve met along the way and want to thank you all for such an incredible journey. When people ask if I miss it? Of course I miss racing. It was my entire life for so long, and to quit cold turkey is hard. I am thankful for the years I spent racing and will never forget them, and the sport will always be inside of me. But I’m enjoying just playing soccer and really want to try to become as good at it as I can. If I can leave you guys with a piece of advice, it would be to just have fun. I always raced my best when I went out and just had fun. If you go out and ride the way you know how to ride, pretend like there’s nobody but you on the track and take away the pressure; it changes your mindset out there. Don’t worry about finishing first. Don’t lose sleep the night before a race. Go out, be confident, and you’ll be where you want to be. Put in the effort off the track, and the results will pay off, but you have to follow your heart and make sure you enjoy what you’re doing. If you do, everything will be fine. Whenever I was nervous and was worried about finishing in this spot and beating this person or that, I never did well. I felt like my results improved as I got older because I became smarter and knew how to prepare myself mentally. But then again, it’s easier said than done. I will make it out to a race here and there to watch, so I look forward to seeing you all. Thanks again to everyone who helped along the way… Braaaap!
