and intense racing to boot. We always laugh because the Loretta Lynn Qualifiers are so early in the year and not many have had time to ride. It seems, however, that some of the best racing always comes in the early spring. You won’t find any coverage for LL yet in our pages. Remember that snow I talked about forcing Tomahawk to cancel, and oh, the monsoon from Elizabeth City, not so great pictures on that day. Check out our local coverage here and please remember we have changed our print schedule to every other month. Our next issue after this will print in late May so watch our Facebook and web pages in between. Happy Spring everybody, or so they say. I am sitting and writing this letter the day before the calendar says that spring is supposed to begin. I know, I know, I should have been a meteorologist. Screw up all the time, can’t get fired, make lots of money. I get it, but unfortunately they don’t. The outdoor season has kicked off here in our little neck of the woods and with it, some of the worst winter weather we’ve had all season. I think our first official snowfall is sitting in my backyard right now, and it’s cold. If you’ve been to the track you know what I’m talking about. Anyhow, I’m an optimistic guy and I’m betting by the time you’re reading this issue of MRA that all of that will be behind us. That we’ll be out at the track in our shorts and T shirts and the racers will be complaining about how hot it is and where did spring go? In this issue find many of the outdoor season opener races along with coverage from Motorama. It was another great show this year and it seems to get bigger all the time. All the local motocross and off road series have kicked off with good numbers

Motorama Races and Shows Harrisburg, PA • February 16-17, 2013 • Photos By: Jim Bull Photo.com For the 35th year in a row the racers, fans and vendors gathered at the Harrisburg Farm Show arena for the kickoff to the race season here in the District 6 region of Pennsylvania. Like many others, I remember those early days here in Harrisburg. Things have changed quite a bit since then; I remember the first couple years the whole show fit into the large arena area of the complex. Vendors would set up in the top hallways with racers pitted underneath. The show offered flat track racing on Friday followed by two days of motocross racing and the vendors only came to supply the racers with their needs for the weekend. Fast forward to today and it’s quite obvious that the show has grown tremendously. Attendees can witness go-cart and quarter midget racing, there are row after row of vendors sporting their wares to both the racers and the public, there are 100’s of classic cars on display and of course the staple is still here, arenacross racing. The racing has been the lifeblood and the reason for the show in the first place. Spectators fill the seats and the aisles to watch the bar banging action of arenacross racing on a homegrown level. Over the years this event has spawned racers onto the pro levels and I’m sure years from now we’ll recognize some of the names who have competed here this weekend. Check out the winners list here and we’ll see you back at the 36th annual. Make sure you come early because there’s always a full house.

Doublin Gap Season Opener RESULTS
this time of year. As I anxiously anticipated the outdoor season opener at Doublin, I knew one thing for sure: it was going to be cold. How cold I wasn’t sure; was anyone going to show up, I didn’t know. The internet said the race was on, so off I went. As I arrived, I glanced up on the hill and the pits seemed pretty slim. All I could think of as I made my way up the lane was that these mxer’s are diehards. Turns out just over 150 decided they were tired of waiting and that it was time to get the show on the road. I put on my three coats, grabbed my camera and headed for the track. We had enough in each class to make it exciting because the racing was pretty good. I don’t know, maybe when it’s that cold you twist it a little harder to get it done. As much as I enjoyed the competition, I was glad they got it done. The wind is very unforgiving as you make your way around the track so I shot a set of motos and I was gone.

Sleepy Hollow MX Park Mainline Series Round 1
March 9-10, 2013 • Photos By: Jim Bull Photo.com What a difference a week makes, especially during March in the great northeast. In the days just prior to this opening round at Sleepy Hollow, the weather forecasters were predicting up to a foot of snow for the area. Matter of fact, Tomahawk MX Park, not far from here, did have to cancel their Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier due to the white stuff. You wouldn’t have known it here as Sleepy was spared and temps were spring-like, hovering in the mid 50’s for the Saturday practice and nearly that for the Sunday race day. Turnout for this event was fantastic with over 250 for practice on Saturday and close to 400 entries for Sunday’s race. The crew at Sleepy did a great job in preparation for the weekend. The track was in great shape for this early in the season and the day’s program ran smoothly. Racing in all classes was pretty intense for this early in the year. The battles were great starting in the 50cc divisions working right on through the age classes. This was the first of eight rounds of the Mainline Series which takes place here and at Pagoda. It is an early season series which will be all wrapped up by the end of July with awards back here at Sleepy in late August. Hold onto your hats, if today’s racing was a preview of what the season holds, it’s going to be a good one.

Rush, Robinson Come Away with Victories
in AMA Pro Grand National Championship Expert Singles Classes at Daytona
Daytona Beach, Fla. • March 20, 2013 • By: www.AMAProRacing.com Round one of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles heated up on a chilly night on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at DAYTONA Flat Track. Defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees (Montgomeryville Cycle / National Cycle / Rogers Racing) got out front early in the main event only to surrender his lead to Brad Baker (Specialty Fabrication Inc. / Schenk Racing) on lap two. Baker looked well on his way to his first GNC victory as he pulled out to nearly a one second lead. However, there was a melee of riders transpiring behind Baker that included a charging Mikey Rush (Machete Energy Drink / Cascio-Rush Racing). Rush, a winner at Daytona back in 2007, came from the back-end of the pack and systematically knifed his way up to a competitive position with the race hanging in the balance. Rush passed Mees on lap eight for second place and began cutting into Baker’s lead. The young Californian was able to make his move for the lead on lap 18 and made it work. “Brad made it extremely difficult for me tonight but I was lucky to make that pass late in the race and eventually stick it for the win,” said Rush. “The feeling I have right now is incredible and I love competing against these guys.” Baker tried in vain to counter attack. “About three quarters of the way through the race I felt someone coming up behind me. As rough as the track was I didn’t dare look back,” said Baker. “Mikey finally came by and it was there wasn’t much I could do at that point.” Rush passed Baker on lap 18 and never looked back, claiming his first ever professional victory.

AMA Pro Grand National Championship Expert Singles - Round 2 Day number two of AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles action was filled with intense racing action that included more surprises. The start of the 25 lap AMA Pro Grand National Championship Expert Singles race saw Kenny Coolbeth Jr. shoot his Chaplin Kawasaki / Cometic Gasket backed Kawasaki into the lead over the 18 rider field. Fellow Kawasaki pilot, Brandon Robinson, pushed his TJ Burnett Farms / USC Racing / Hart Racing Kawasaki to the front on lap two, wasting no time establishing himself as the man to beat. After 24 nearly perfect laps, Robinson earned his first Grand National victory. “This is a dream come true,” said Robinson, who overcame career threatening injuries in 2009 at the Indianapolis Mile. “Ever since I was a kid I’ve dreamed about winning a National. All the hard work I put in this winter paid off. The end of the race seemed to last forever. I saw the five-lap board and couldn’t believe there was that much still to go.” Brad Baker (Specialty Fabrication Inc / Schenk Racing) was looking to improve on Thursdays night’s second place finish and closed repeatedly on Robinson, but to no avail.
“I got hurt pretty bad at the Springfield Short Track last year,” said Rush. “Now I’m on top of the box. I’m stoked. I was just trying to pick up the throttle way earlier than them. That’s what it took to do it tonight. I just want to say that I love Daytona, this place is extremely special to me.”
“Every time Brandon made a little mistake I’d gain on him,” Baker said. “I thought I might have a chance to go for the lead at one point, but then with about five to go I made a mistake. If you make one slip here it takes five laps to make up for it. Even though I didn’t get a win, it feels good to leave with the series lead.”

Coolbeth held on to third for a long time, but Bryan Smith had his Crosley Radio / Howerton Racing backed Honda on the move. Smith had a good start, dropped to eighth, and then started a slow climb to the front, grabbing third on lap 14.
“I came up and made a lot of passes,” Smith said. “The way people were riding; you could make up or lose four or five positions in one corner. Once I got in third I just could not seem to close the gap, but we’ll take it.” When the double checkers came out, Robinson’s lead had grown to over a second and was his largest lead of the night. “My entire team just worked extremely hard to make this happen for me and I can’t be more thankful for their support,” said Robinson. “We got the setup as close to perfect as possible and everything went as smooth as we could have asked for all night. I got out front early in the main event, put in a hard 25 laps and it all paid off. My team and I have had an awesome week in general and it feels incredible to win here.” Though Baker finished in an impressive second place in Friday night’s main event, a post-race protest by an opposing competitor led to a technical inspection of Baker’s motorcycle. The inspection revealed that Baker’s Honda had suspension parts that were in violation of AMA Pro Flat Track’s guidelines. Though Baker retained his second place finish and money earned, he had to forfeit the 19 points granted to him for his effort. This mistake on Baker’s behalf leaves Robinson as the point leader after leaving the Sunshine State. Robinson holds a four point advantage over Rush with 2011 Grand National Champion Johnson just eleven off the lead. The night’s big winners were Roy and Mark Miller (not related). Roy was the series winner of the 1st State Gold Cup Championship held at Airport Speedway in New Castle over Dalton Gauthier. Roy Miller also topped the 150cc Adult class on the way to his championship. Logan McGrane was the 55cc winner while New Jersey’s Doug Cook took the 85cc series. Brett Johnson captured his first title of the evening over Jeff Salevan and Dan Dougherty in the Open B division while the Vet A class was topped by Tom Majeski.

Next up, the Delaware Dirt Track Series winners were honored. Another Miller captured this series. Mark Miller topped the 450 Sportsman and 450 Pro classes en route to the overall track championship aboard the Rockstar Honda.

Jeff Salevan was awarded the overall amateur championship by topping the Vet B class and Brayden Uselton was named youth champion for his first title in the 55 class. Other riders awarded class championships were Tom Majeski taking his second Vet A title of the night; Motocross rider turned Dirt Track rider Matt Schwartz captured the Open A class over Majeski and Dalton Gauthier. One family in particular was well represented: the Johnson Racing team. Rick Johnson captured the 150 Adult final while his son Jeremiah, last year’s Open B champ, finished fifth after missing most of the season due to his service in the Air Force. Cousin Brett Johnson won both Open B series title and brother-in-law Tom Uselton finished second in the Open B division.

The McGrane family was also well represented. Father Tom finished second in the Sportsman A class and son Logan won the 65cc division and finished second in the 55cc class. Our series offers great racing with the most exciting, challenging and varied terrain of any series in the east. This year the ECEA Championship Enduro Series will host 2 National Enduros, both in Pennsylvania. The ECEA Championship Harescrambles Series has something ALL NEW this year to introduce to the riders. Along with the 13 outstanding events hosted by 12 of the ECEA’s finest clubs comes the opportunity for all riders to join in to race our series for year-end points and to sit proud with fellow racers at our year-end awards banquet. We now have an associate style membership for harescramble riders. Don’t Forget our 100% Clubs, Adult, Youth and P/W and 50 riders get to enjoy big rewards for riding all events in the harescrambles series. $3000 minimum is pledged to these riders. Another new program that is in the planning stages is the ECEA Grand Champion Awards. 5 Harescrambles vs 5 Enduros ... Details are comings oon. The details are pretty simple for 2013, for this first year on the program we would like all riders to consider joining an ECEA club as your best option and to be part of the best series around. For those who would like to test our series and try us out for a spin, you will be able to join our Harescramble membership for a $35 fee in addition to any rider number fees, AMA etc.. This program is to allow riders that may have work or time constraints from participating in our club structure to be rewarded for all their racing efforts and we do appreciate you riding the ECEA Championship Harescramble Series. This program may also ease the burden in families that have youth riders now moving into the adult ranks, It may allow them to still participate with us as they juggle school and family schedules. Riders in the C class do not have to be a club member, but it is still recommended. Again we are built on the club principle, our clubs give a sense of involvement and reward, community support and fun‌come race with us and join us. MDRA 7 at Doublin Gap Pro Am Event • March 17, 2013 • Photos By: Jim Bull Photo.com This would be our second trip to Doublin Gap this season, but hopefully our last with temps under the 40 degree mark. This race was a Pro Am points earning event with factory contingencies and the kick off race for the 2013 MDRA 7 Series. The pro turnout was good with over 20 riders in each premier division. First up was the 250 A group and young Joey Deneen would grab the holeshot and get out to an early lead. Deneen would hold on for a few laps until he was overtaken by Nick Fratz Orr who would be your eventual overall winner going 1-4 on the day. Another young expert from the area, Ryan Clites would go 4-2 for second overall followed by Deneen in third with 2-5 finishes. In the Open division, Deneen would again lead the pack thru the first turn in the first moto but would be passed by Bobby Piazza who got out to the early lead followed by Hushon and local favorite Broc Schmelyun. Schmelyun would eventually get by them all and race to the overall win going 1-1 on the day. Another long time local favorite, Jeremy Cook, would turn up the gas and go 5-3 for second overall followed by your 250 winner Fratz Orr in third. Racing in other classes was exceptional for this early in the season as both the guys and the girls are gearing up for the LL Area qualifiers in the coming weeks. Question: Can we hear the voice of God today?
I’m Greg Pamart, owner and operator of GPMX Motocross School, based in Birdsboro PA. I’m 40 years old and just started my 30th racing season this year and I’ve been involved with MX training since 1992. I’m going to present you with riding tips to help you have more fun, improve your riding skill and be a safer rider. “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice make perfect” One of the common mistakes I see riders doing is to practice as fast as they can instead of concentrating on applying the correct techniques. If you get the technique right, the speed will come naturally. And you’ll be much faster than you otherwise would’ve been... and safer! Slow down a little when you are practicing and focus on one or two techniques at a time, and make sure you do them perfectly. Become conscious of how you ride, rather than just riding.
Many of you know me by Victory in Jesus Ministries. I held chapel from 2003-2010 for Doublin Gap and the MDRA. Since 2010 my wife and I have been in Colorado at Bible College. We are excited to announce that we will be returning to Maryland to have our fourth child and begin our ministry. I will be returning to some Doublin Gap and a few MDRA races in June of this year. We look forward to seeing all of you.

Now let’s answer the question: do you think humans can hear God, the creator’s voice today?
For example, a rider is giving up a lot of control if he or she has a style of grabbing the grips straight on and riding with their forearms parallel to the ground. By doing this they don’t have the correct leverage factors between their upper body and the motorcycle. It’s also more difficult to open the throttle.
For generations, The Bible has been considered by many to be the written word of God; archaeology even supports the Bible. There are other so-called religious books that archaeology actually disproves their accuracy and authenticity. Australian archaeologist Clifford Wilson wrote, “those who know the facts now recognize that the New Testament must be accepted as a remarkably accurate source book.” The Bible is an account of God’s relationship with man. We see him talking to: Adam, Abraham, Moses, Samuel, and Jesus (The Son of God), and even to Paul well after the resurrection of Christ Jesus. Paul lived in the same age we live in; Paul had the same rights to God as we have. If you read your Bible, you know Paul’s story is in the book of Acts and there are 28 chapters in that book. Friends, your life and mine are writing chapter 29!
When you go out to practice have a purpose behind the laps you are putting down. Don’t just race around the track, making the same mistakes over and over. Always spend some time separating and working on your weak points and techniques.
High over grip and high elbows will enable the rider to have full range of the throttle through their full range of body positions on the motorcycle. This technique also gives you the correct leverage factors between your body and the motorcycle through your full range of movement. Open up you upper body, get those arms up and out away from your sides. This is one of many techniques that you need to understand and get dialed in to get full control of your bike and go faster. Repetition is the mother of skill. Don’t practice your mistakes; practice the correct techniques to build the correct muscle memory.

This verse shows us that God puts His Spirit into the spirit of every believer and every follower of Jesus. We need to ask Him into our lives by faith, but once we have, He makes our body His home. Have you ever heard someone say, “I don’t know what told me to do that, but I just knew it was the right thing to do.”? The youth pastor’s wife here at Charis Christian Center in Colorado, said while still in the hospital just after her baby was born, she was finally going to take a nap. The baby was in the bassinet next to her bed and her husband was snoring on his bed. Just as she was drifting off to sleep she heard very clearly “Something is wrong, get up!” (a still small voice in her mind - it sounds like clear thoughts mostly). She sat straight up and looked at her new baby only to find she was purple and not breathing. Her daughter is now three years old because mom heard God and moved on His Word. Hebrews 3:7-8 (7) – “Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith,) today if ye will hear his voice, (8) – harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness.” God does speak to us in our minds. As believers, we have His Spirit living in our spirit, we learn to hear Him better every day. The Holy Spirit (God) is with you always and even wants to help you find your lost shoes. He never goes against our own will and always works through people and our faith in His grace. Just because you hear God’s voice does not mean you have all the answers. He made us as humans because He likes us. So hearing Him does not make us gods and able to fix every person’s problems. We still are required to learn and grow in this natural world. I talk to my Heavenly Father often; sometimes I feel I am hearing clearly, and other times I let the cares of this world cloud my mind. I was playing hide and seek with my daughter and I said, “okay Father (God), where is she hiding?” The first thought I had was “she’s in the downstairs bathroom.” So I went and looked and there she was hiding in the bathroom. Friends, God wants to be your Lord, your Savior, and your friend. Invite The Holy Spirit in today. Make your body His home. Confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. Tell Him you believe He forgave you of wrongdoing, and that you believe He is risen alive, now in heaven. Tell Him today. Read John 14 in your Bible; it will encourage you. Valve Adjustments On all four strokes you need to check the valve clearance from time to time. There are two types of valve adjustments, adjustable rocker arm and shim under bucket. With the exception of the Honda TRX 450 and CRF line, the rest of the 250’s and 450’s are shim under bucket, which means you have to remove the cam and bucket to replace the shim. The Honda has buckets for the intake valves and a rocker arm for the exhaust, but the arm uses a shim instead of the adjuster bolt. Adjuster bolts are easy to use and are found on models like the Honda XR’s and 400 EX, Kawasaki Mojave motors and other older types. To check the valve clearance on your model, first clean all the mud and dirt off, then take the fuel tank off and remove the valve cover. Get the motor at top dead center (tdc). Look in your service manual for the intake and exhaust clearance specs, use a feeler gauge and fit it between the bottom of the adjuster bolt and top of the valve stem. If they’re within the clearance then no adjustment is needed. If they need to be adjusted, then loosen the adjuster bolt nut and move the bolt as needed. Make sure you tighten the nut securely so it won’t come off.

Shim under bucket adjustments is a little harder to do. Do the same procedure as above and get the motor at (tdc). But this time fit the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the bucket. On Honda models you will do the same on the intake side but on the exhaust side you will stick the gauge below the rocker arm pad and on top of the shim to get a reading. If you need to do an adjustment, then you have to loosen the cam chain tensioner by removing it or using a little tool that pulls the pin back and gives the chain some slack. Remove the cams, pull the bucket and remove the shims one at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. If the clearance was too tight then you need to go smaller on the shim size, if it was a 1.90 shim you may have to go down to a 1.85 or a 1.80 as an example. Check your service manual for the shim chart.
Flat Track
On these newer motors some issues have come up about valve wear. If you have to replace a shim with more than 4 or 5 sizes smaller, then that is telling you the valves are worn or wearing out quickly and need replaced. If you ever have to grind a shim to make the clearance work (yes, some people do that and that is not a good idea to do at all) then that’s telling you the valve is about to break off and has no life left; you should replace it before it costs you even more money.

Also dirty air filters and ethanol in the fuel will cause premature valve wear. So keep clean air filters on and keep clean gas in there as well. If you feel uncomfortable changing your valve shims, then take it to a local dealer or motorcycle/atv shop that you trust.
