has slowed me down. You have to drink lots of water, cover up and go slow. My hat’s off to everybody that’s out competing; I imagine the temperature goes up 20 degrees once you crawl into that gear. Remember, racers, to also thank your parents for taking you; I’m sure some days the comfort of home can certainly be more appealing than the racetrack on those 100 degree days. Never fear, however, as Labor Day and the fall cool down are right around the corner. It’s hard to believe that we are headed toward wrapping up yet another season. Check out the schedules here in our pages as the series are starting to wind down. It seems like many are taking a short break in August but will not finish up till October or so. Like the NEOC says on their website under August – GONE FISHIN’. As always, we have the usual thanks to all, and we’ll see you at the track.

Happy August, everybody. Boy, has it been hot. I’m not complaining because, like most of you, I live in the tundra of the great Northeast. I know it’s only temporary, and before we know it we’ll have five months of the cold stuff to deal with. I don’t know about you, but I am a fan of the hot. I guess this weather has been good for our local racers, as they head into the amateur nationals at Loretta Lynn’s. This is typical weather for there, and I know many struggle when they arrive at the ranch. In this issue, find our preview for 2012. I wish I had more room for this feature, as I believe that this year we have a ton of contenders heading South to participate. Cheer them all on, as they are already champions just for making the cut. As a matter of fact, till some of you are reading this it could be about all wrapped up. Come on back next issue, as we’ll list the finishes and reports from some of those who went. As for the local scene, it’s been very dry, and some Sundays seem to move real slow while at the track. I know as much as I love it, it certainly

VFTR Harescramble PA State HS Series • Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area • June 30 – July 1, 2012 • By: Jamie B. Brown Round 7 of 13 of the PA State Harescramble Championship Series was hosted by the Valley Forge Trailer Riders at the new Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA) located in Shamokin, Pa. This was the first time ever for an event of this magnitude to be held at the new site. The temps were in the high 90s and very dry for both days of racing, which played a major factor in the way participants rode. Riders had to stay hydrated throughout the race in order not to cramp up during or after their runs. The track was a gnarly 7 to 9 miles of rocky, hilly and woodsy terrain, with some very dusty conditions throughout the course that made visibility very limited or down to nothing at some spots on the track. This was a major factor in this race. With a total of over 300 riders attending this two-day event and the recent dry conditions, this was not surprising. Races for both days started out on a grass field section. The course then turned right and went back in to the woods
for some time, before coming back out on to the field part of the track. Some of the track consisted of old power line roads, which added to the dusty areas with poor visibility. The youth classes took off first on Saturday, and the adult classes took their place on the starting line on Sunday morning. With the course being an average of 7 to 9 miles, riders only had time for 3 to 4 laps and could not pass many of their fellow racers. This made it easy for the front-runners to stay out in front, as long as they did not have any problems with their machines or their bodies from the heat and dust. Motocross for Christ Camp June 24 – 27, 2012 • Heaven on Earth – Pine Grove, PA • By: Jim Bull Roy and Patty Craig and an army of volunteers held their first camp of 2012 at the new Heaven on Earth motocross facility in Pine Grove, PA, in late June. The Craigs are now in their sixth year of “Connecting Kids With God’s Love Through Motocross” at their annual camps. The vision came from local racer Roy Craig, who felt God had a bigger calling for him in life, so he and another racer friend held their first camp with about seven children in the racer’s backyard six years ago. Since then, God has blessed the efforts greatly, and things have begun to grow. Camps are free to the campers and paid for through fundraisers, apparel sales and by the donations of many. Each year, the Craigs now host two camps that bring in around 50 campers each. The unfortunate part is that many children have to be turned away due to either financial or time constraints. The fortunate part is that many are being taught about Jesus and how to ride a motorcycle. Camps offer a combination of rider training, life skills, bike and safety maintenance, and, of course, faith-based learning. Campers get morning fitness and devotion time, do crafts, and hear testimonies from others that have great experiences to share on how God has changed their lives. Campers are broken down by age groups for camping and skill levels for rider training. There is always plenty of extra fun at the camps, and it’s a great place to make new friends. Camp two has been full for months, but if you would like to participate in next year’s camps, be sure to watch their website come January 1, 2013. Just like believing that Jesus died for your sins is the only way to get into Heaven, logging onto that website on New Year’s Day is about the only way into camp, which just might lead the way to finding your way in to Heaven.

Sleepy Hollow Mainline Round #6 • June 23-24, 2012 • By: John Sherer III
Lauren Turick (43) was consistent all day, winning the overall in the Women’s division.
As at each Mainline round, practice was held on Saturday prior to the race day. After practice had been completed late in the afternoon, the grounds crew groomed and heavily soaked the surface with water, as the searing heat had taken its toll. Sunday morning arrived to more sunshine and heat. As the riders came out to inspect the track for warm-ups, they gazed upon a wet and slippery surface, and many opted out of running in the first of two warm-up sessions. By the end of the second practice round, the surface was run in to near perfection and needed very little attention troughout the rest of the racing afternoon, and fortunately the dust was keep to a very low minimum. Some of the highlights on the day started right off with the mini divisions. KTM mounted Ryan Canaguier won both the 50 (7-8) stock and (4-8) open classes. He was challenged fiercely by Sean Rahilly riding the Cobra, with Rahilly finishing second overall on the day in both classes. In (4-6) racing action, Braxton Keiffer would lead the way, with Randall Meyers grabbing the second spot in the stock division. Dalton Clare rode out front in all his motos, grabbing the overall in 65 (10-11). In big bike action, Brian Bachman scored two first-place finishes in the newbie class, which has grown as the season has gone on. The Women’s division also showed off their talents, with Yamaha rider Lauren Turick holding off challenges from Bernadette Griffen and Kayla Willders. In 250 A racing, Richie Kastle and Chad Auginbaugh ran tight all afternoon, with Tyler Kline running a close third. Both the 250 B and 250 C classes brought a good number of riders to the gates, and the action wasn’t hard to find. 250 B riders Aaron Albright and Colby Fisher both put excellent rides in and finished first and second overall on the day. The 250 C group saw some great starts by Timothy Lambert atop his Yamaha, leaving Hunter Moore and Cody Summers to fight for second and third place overall. Jumping ahead to 35 plus A, Todd Weindel and Ethan Waybright fought bar to bar during their motos, thrilling everyone along spectator row. In the end, Weindel took the overall. Two class winner Mike Reynolds rode his Kawasaki to four first-place finishes, winning 35 plus B and Senior B/C. After 32 motos on the day, the final checkered flag had fallen. The day proved to be safe and exciting for everyone as expected by the Mainline Series promoters. MDRA Quads at Rocket Raceway Three Springs, PA • July 7 -8, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com In early July we headed to Rocket Raceway nestled in the scenic mountains of southcentral Pennsylvania. The Saturday practice day was a scorcher, with temps sitting in the mid 90s. We’ve been on a hot streak here in the area and kudos go out to all the racers and track workers, the parents, and the promoters for coming out and making it happen. On race day, the heat broke a bit and a steady but light breeze kicked up, making things a little more bearable. The Open A guys would be the first to hit the track, with long-time racer Ron Ranck taking the win in the first moto. Scores were all over the place in this division, and the eventual winner would be Zack Frantz, posting moto scores of 4 – 2 for the O/A. I believe some of the best racing of the day went down in the mini divisions. These kids were on fire and most classes had good turnouts even in the heat. It may be due to some of the efforts of the Quad Connect MX group. This is a volunteer group of parents and businesses helping racers at the track by raising money for prizes and hole shot awards, etc., to keep the racers coming back. Check them out on Facebook to see how you can help too. Affordable Towing stepped up to offer hole shot awards at this round, and a random racer from each class got to take home some kind of prize. The racing was great in all the youth classes, with kids on the gas and racing to the end. Check the results here to see how your racer did. One of the most impressive feats on the day was 15-year-old Michael Machuski racing in the novice division. This is Michael’s first year on the 450, and after getting banged up a few weeks ago, he made the decision to race anyhow to keep chasing the points lead. Michael raced with a broken wrist after removing part of his cast, and he still has a banged up back. Smart move? Who knows, but you have to give him an A for determination. By the way, he smoked them all. Watch out for great things from this kid as he moves through the ranks.

Loretta Lynn Preview July 29 - August 4, 2012 • Loretta Lynn Ranch – Amateur Nationals • Hurricane Mills, TN The Red Bull AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by Amsoil only takes one week, but that one week will create a lifetime of memories for those who attend. From the moment you leave your driveway, to pulling through the front gates of the facility, all the way down to your last moto and the closing ceremonies, you’ll feel a certain magic that follows every step of racing at the Ranch. This year the youth regional took place at Doublin Gap in late June and what a spectator treat for those of us that won’t be making the trip (me included). It’s an opportunity to get a preview of what a week at the Nationals has to offer, full gates and fantastic racing in every class. This year’s North East Regional at Doublin was hot too, just like it gets at the Ranch. Below, find a list of local racers who made the cut this year. We would like to wish them all the best at the big show. If there are any we missed, we apologize. There are also some defectors from the area that now live in different parts of the country that we listed and a few that won’t be attending because of recent injuries. Please enjoy a few pictures here of some who made it, and we want them all to know, no matter how you finish at the Ranch, you are already a champion for making it there. Shoot Out Race • June 29 – July 1, 2012 • Photos By: Jim Bull Photo.com The first weekend in July brought the fourth or fifth running of The Triple Crown or Tri District Cup race back to its roots at the Doublin Gap MX Park in Shippensburg, PA. It seems this race has struggled since the beginning to find its identity. There have been a few good years, but this year it definitely struggled to attract the riders. Originally born to put the best racers from each class together from three districts to see who really is the top dog in each class, the racers have failed to come. The event is spread out over three days, with a practice on Friday and a three-moto format over Saturday and Sunday, and it moves from year to year so no one can claim home track advantage. To me, it sounded like a good concept. I see state championship races each year that are a one- day two-moto format race and sometimes run at several locations in the state in the same year. My question is, how does this really determine a state champion? Then there are the series races; everybody loves a series, right? Most times, it seems that the guy who shows up to the most rounds gets that series championship title. Sometimes the fastest guy in the class wins the title, then sometimes not. Here is an opportunity to put the top 15 from each district together to see what happens. Seems to me like not many really want to know. Or maybe it’s just the fact that it’s spread over three days. Maybe it was just too hot this year? Let’s see, Loretta’s in August, a tad warm. Ok – who knows? Anyhow, the guys and gals that came put on a good show. Pagoda MC Mainline Series • July 7-8, 2012 • By: Jim Mucklin As I walked up to the riders meeting, I was trying to convince Alex and Chad that it wasn’t going to rain. The sky was gray and there were drops on my shirt, but faith once again prevailed and the sun finally came out. After Saturday, anything was welcomed. It was nice to see a lot of old faces, as well as some riders who I didn’t see last year that had moved up classes and were doing well, but fear not, there is lots of new talent, too! Can you say Austin (I’m going to Loretta’s) Daniels, Mr. Wolfe and Chase (me) Yentzer? They were one, two and three in Junior Mini, and they also finished that way in the 85 9-11. Chase also took first in 65 (7-9). My Ride of the Day pick goes to Chase. Sorry, A and B riders, this was the show. Not to be undone, 45+ brought 14 bikes to the line, the same amount as open B. That shows a lot of commitment to the sport in this heat. 250 C pulled up with 36. Now you tell me who wants to ride? It’s easy to see why, the Pagoda track was awesome. But back to commitment, I got to talk to Niki (the real Easton Assassin) Stewart. With a brother doing Nationals, here with her dad and sister racing, she still found some time to not only win the Women’s, but to throw it down in College Boy. Nice ride, thanks. This is what makes MX real. On to racing, in 250 A, our very own Richie Kastle came in first, followed by Aughinbaugh and Major. In 250 B, the 131 of Carling with a 1-1 took the overall, followed by Weindel, who I might say made the transition to B really smooth. Weeks came in with a third. It was nice, too, to see Gabel, Rivera and Teasdale in the pack. On to the “fitties,” it was the #214 with Mr. Espinoza aboard, he had this track dialed in. I am looking forward to watching this young man. In the Women’s, the top three were Stewart with a 1-1, Willders with a 2-2, and Behrens. Thanks, ladies. In 35+ A, Sheak on the #4 Green Machine was on fire, followed by Todd Weindel on that good lookin’ two stroke. Eddie Anewalt on the clean machine Yammie takes third. Eddie and Cepress have some secret, those bikes never get dirty. In College Boy, top finishers were Ryan Zimmerman with a 1-1 and Maldet and Sanfelice (and Stewart on her Suz). Casey Clark was on hand to take the Open A, and Steven Vertucci looking really good on the #209 Honda took open B. And John Barto, in between all the good work with the 529 Foundation, even had time to run a 1-1 to take the 30+ B. Me, I was just walking Future JR’s around taking pictures, card girl in but that’s “the way I training. saw it.”

This is Zachary Camp. For those of you who don’t know me, I did chapels at Doublin Gap from 2003 till 2010 and chapels in the beginning days of MDRA. Friends, I have not been at the track because I handed over the responsibilities of holding chapels to others since going to Charis Bible College, not in pursuit of another degree, but in pursuit of the practical power of the Holy Spirit to learn healing words of knowledge and victory over everyday circumstances, etc. You see, the Word speaks of this, and I found a ministry that operates like this daily (Awmi.net). Miracles are part of it, but, when Jesus rose from the dead, he defeated any and all death or forms of incipient death in our lives. We do not have to settle for a life of defeats, and we don’t have to live with chronic sickness or poverty. We can have the kind of life we used to dream of when we were 12 years old. Romance, peace, prosperity and, yes, if you are serving the Lord, sometimes persecution. Some people will hate on you for sharing the almost too good to be true news. The news that Jesus already went out and got everything you need for this life and the next. Your job is to rest assured in that and walk in the victory he has already won. It’s kind of like starting a race and knowing ahead of time that you’re going to be the winner, or going to the store and knowing the bill is covered. You see, Jesus made provision for all your needs; the work is done. His plans for you are always good, peace, and purposeful living. John 10:10. You might say, then, why are some of the areas of my life a mess? Because God is not a controlling sovereign leader but rather an all powerful sovereign leader who delegated most of the care of this earth to humans. Adam, in the fall of man, gave some of his delegated power to Satan, the god of this world. Not everything that happens is God’s doing. The good news is Jesus bought this power back and has given it to his followers. We have Jesus’ victory over Satan and this world. Victory is already ours. So what is the key to living in victory? 1. First, hearing and receiving the good news that Jesus saved you (Romans 10:9-10) The Greek word for saved is sozo: from a primary sos (contraction for obsolete saos, “safe”); to save, i.e. deliver or protect (literally or figuratively):--heal, preserve, save (self), do well, be (make) whole. Jesus bought and paid for your completed victory in every area of life. 2. Second, spend time planting this Word of victory in your heart until it grows within you, changing what you think, and in turn changing what you do. (Romans 12:1-2) 3. Third, begin to speak victory over yourself and life. Speak God’s word out loud. Never speak defeat, sickness or future defeat. Become a chosen eternal optimist. Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” One small life example of this is my daughter. She was swimming with a floatation ring, but she was consumed with fear of drowning. This kind of fear is not welcome in our lives. So after trying to get her to swim with my help and no success, I put her on the deck and told her that when she was ready to operate in faith, not fear, and speak faith she could get back in the pool. I then spoke words of faith declaring her one of courage and left her be. About ten minutes later, she was saying her own song about Jesus being with her always. Her mommy said, “Yeah, Talitha, even in the pool.” Talitha then walked over to the ladder, put the foatie on and went right out into the water all by herself with a totally relaxed attitude. 4. Fourth, listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, who speaks to your inner man. Giving you guidance towards victory, He will lead you through his still small voice. John 14:17, “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. “ Friend, life is much like an MX race. Know Jesus has already won the race for you, and victory is yours. This makes all the difference, but if you line up to a race and have not invested in you as the rider, it does not matter how fast your bike is. No matter how much your dad spent on your suspension, you will not win. Being a follower of Jesus is like having a factory ride at life, but we still have to train to win. Don’t be one of many who go to heaven and find out their spiritual bank account was loaded and they never spent any of it, just lived defeated while having millions in the bank. Take your victory today and begin to seek the Lord, asking Him to show you all He has for you, in turn enabling you to share it with others.

MAMA at Blue Diamond July 14-15, 2012 • By: Jim Bull Photo.com Mid-July brought round #8 of the MAMA Series to Blue Diamond Park in New Castle, Delaware. The weekend started off with rain but cleared for Sunday’s racing action. As of late, however, once the clouds lifted, the scorching sun came out and gave us another 95-plus degree day. As I walked around the course with a wet towel slung over my head to try and stay cool, I couldn’t help but think how tough all these racers are to be out here racing in this heat, no matter what their age. This event drew a big crowd too; there were right around 600 entries over the entire weekend, which surprised me for as hot as it’s been. With this race, the series has just crossed over the halfway point. I know they are taking a break for Loretta’s, then it’s back into action the week after at the Virginia Motorsports Park, running right on through to the end of October to finish up back at Blue Diamond for their Halloween race. The racing was intense today, as Blue Diamond attracts racers not only from the MAMA Series but also many who make the short trek south from NJ and PA as well. There are a lot of locals getting ready for the nationals, and there were some fast kids here on this day. Check out our Loretta Lynn Preview elsewhere in this issue to see who all is going. Racer Review – Loretta Lynn’s I met up with local racer Brandon Garlock a week after the North East Regional at Doublin Gap Motocross Park. I’ve been watching Brandon ride for years now, and it seems, like most riders, he improves year after year. He qualified for the Amateur Nationals last year, but an unfortunate injury just prior to the event kept him from attending. Brandon really seems to be focused this year and has been on the gas big time. In years past, he was always right there in the hunt, but in 2012 he seems to be leading the way. He swept his class at the regional, winning all three motos, and seems to have an excellent chance heading into Loretta’s. He trains regularly, running one-hour motos and, according to his dad, would ride longer if he didn’t run out of fuel. Watch for this kid in Tennessee; he’s not the only local that has what it takes to succeed there, but my bet is that he is one that will.

90th BARBARA FRITCHIE CLASSIC AMA HOTSHOE SERIES • FREDERICK FAIRGROUNDS • Baker Borrows Way to Frederick Win • By Len & Ben Breech • FREDERICK, MD. JULY 4 After his season starting team folded for monetary reasons, he picked up a quality ride for the previous week’s Lima National, only to have it break early in the final event. Today at Frederick, when it broke again, the Washington state rider borrowed a Harley from Gary Goodwin of Goodwin Racing to win the Expert Twins final of the AMA Hotshoe Series at the Al Wilcox Memorial-90th Annual Barbara Fritchie Classic sponsored by Fredericktown Yamaha/Richard F. Kline Inc. and Dutrow’s Honda. Sammy Halbert easily won the Expert Singles final, while Jared Mees got some gas money with his win in the Dash for Cash over Halbert and Luke Gough. Mees took the lead from Halbert, Gough, Baker and Chad Cose as they exited turn two. With Mees a few lengths in front, Gough got by Halbert after two laps, with Baker just behind. On the fifth lap, Halbert tried too hard between one and two and slid out, scrambling to the top of the hay bales for safety. Halbert made the restart that had Mees in front of Baker, Gough, and Halbert, who made it to fourth quickly. Mees had lost his edge after the restart, as Baker took the lead on the next lap. Gough then got by Mees for second later. While they were battling for second, Baker put a few more lengths on them. Mees retook second on the last lap. The Expert Singles had Halbert getting in front of Mees off two. Behind, Corey Crawford, Mike Avila, Jeff Carver and Cory Texter started a long battle for third. On the fifth lap, Carver and Avila got by Crawford. Crawford challenged Avila off four on the final lap, just getting by him at the line. After a crash-induced restart, Jason Isennock put his High’s Diary/Foard Racing Honda into the Pro Singles lead over Cory Strickler, Ryan Wells, Shayna Texter, and Jesse Long. Wells put his Weirbach Racing Honda into the lead as they started the third

lap. After getting one of her typical slow starts, Texter began one of her typical charges forward, moving into third by the fourth lap. Another rider on the move after a slow start was Adam Bushman, who was up to sixth on the fourth lap and fifth two laps later. Texter’s charge on her DFW Honda took her to second off second on the seventh lap, but Wells had already built up a straightaway margin. Wells had to work harder in the Pro Twins as he chased Jason Zeigler for over four laps before taking the lead. Mike Poe stayed in third the entire distance. Jason Isennock, Jason Griffin, and Sam Wiggins traded fourth for most of the final, with Wiggins coming out on top. At the Hotshoe Series races, several amateur classes are run. Most exciting was the 450-Open Singles. Brody Miller led at the start, and Kevin Bills, Kolby Carlile, and Samantha Bergman followed. Carlile was into second after two laps as they battled for the lead. Bergman took third on the fourth lap. Carlile tried several times to get by Miller during the final, unsuccessfully. Off the final turn, he tried to get by, coming up inches short at the line but shooting by Miller into one, riding the hay bales to the top and hitting the fence head on. His bike ricocheted back into Miller’s, knocking him off In the 450 and 250 amateur finals, Tristan Avery rode the wheels off his Honda powered machines. In the 450,

Jarod Vanderkooi took the lead from Travis Diem, Kolby Carlile, Avery, and Kevin Bills. Carlile took second down the back straight on the second lap, while Avery started moving on his undersized machine, taking third on the third lap and second on lap five. He did close the gap on Vanderkooi, but not enough to threaten. Hunter Edwards was first out of two in the 250, with Carlile, Diem, Avery, Colin Cunningham, and Ryan Varnes. Diem started drifting back, while Avery hugged the inside rail to battle with Carlile for second, taking control on the fourth lap. Using his inside line, he pressured Edwards for the lead, taking it in the late laps, with Carlile nipping Edwards for second on the final lap.
