Since it’s opening in 1989, Kitayama, an incredibly popular Japanese restaurant has been offering its patrons an opportunity to enjoy a great of view of a Japanese garden as well as authentic Japanese cuisine. There is even a Japanese-style room with tatami giving that in-Japan authentic experience. They offer monthly Japanese-style course meals and seasonal courses as well as sushi and a variety of deliciously crafted Japanese dishes all made under highly trained staff. In order to bring out the true flavors of the seasonal ingredients, they use 20 different types of salt. Now is the season of Matsutake mushrooms, conger eel, and Japanese branquillo. We recommend their steamed version of these seasonal ingredients.

Peace and Children

This month, we share a story of connection between some American children and children of Fukushima who remain refugees from home. 未だ避難を強いられている”フクシマ”の子どもとアメリカの子どもの心のふれあいをお伝えします。

arly in August, I visited the temporary school building for Iitate Middle School in Iinomachi, located in the southern part of the city of Fukushima in Fukushima Prefecture. The Iitate Sports Exchange Association and the NGO ADRA Japan jointly sponsored a children’s cultural exchange, for which I visited in order to attend. Iitate Middle School was originally located in the town of Iitate, but due to the nuclear disaster triggered by the great earthquake of 3/11, the region was designated as a radioactive area, all residents were evacuated, and the middle school reopened in neighboring Iinomachi. The evacuee children, living in temporary housing and nearby apartments, went to school here. The conditions that engulfed the villagers remained difficult, and the children were trapped in a state where the future was completely unclear, with no sense of when they would be able to return home or to their real school. Three middle school and high school students from Irvine, California, joined the cultural exchange as volunteers in order to encourage those children. A soccer cultural exchange was held on a searing summer day exceeding 36℃, representative of the hot, humid Japanese summers. Over the span of 4 hours, nearly 40 youths poured sweat onto the field, in tune with the droning of the summer cicadas. These youths, meeting for the very first time, smiled as their voices met on the field, and as they passed the ball, ran along the field, and kicked with all their might. Their very hearts connected with each passing of the ball. When play ended in the evening, with an atmosphere that couldn’t quite be expressed in words, clouds had covered the sky, and the onset of pouring rain sent the students running for the classrooms. From the hearts of the children, however, I could feel a quiet sense of peace, much like the calm that settled over the school grounds after the rain. The second day, with English conversation, the cultural exchange sprang up again in earnest. As of August 1st, of the 6714 original residents of the village of Iitate, 6164 evacuated to other cities within Fukushima Prefecture, and over half, 3807, took refuge in the city of Fukushima. Another 286 took refuge outside of the prefecture, dispersed all over Japan. I pray for the day when all of the children and their families can return home, and the children can once again learn and play at their original schools.

の8月初旬、福島県福島市南部の飯野町にある飯舘中学校の仮設校舎を訪問しました。飯舘スポーツ交流会とNPO法人 ADRA Japanの共催による子どもたちの交流会に参加するためでした。飯舘中学校は元々飯舘村にあった中学校ですが、3月11日の東日本大震災が引き金となった東京電力福島第一原発事故による放射能汚染地域に指定されて全村民が避難しているため、中学校も近隣の飯野町に場所を移して開校しています。仮設住宅や近隣のアパートで避難生活を送る子どもたちは、ここで学校生活を送っています。村民を取り巻く状況は依然厳しく、子どもたちもいつ自分の家や母校に帰ることができるのか、将来が全く不透明な状態です。交流会には、彼らを励まそうとアーバイン市から3名の中・高生がボランティアとして参加しました。高温多湿な日本の夏を象徴するかのような36℃を超える猛暑日のなか、サッカーの交流会が行われました。ミンミンゼミの合唱による応援に背中を押されて約40人の若者たちが約4時間、多いに汗を流しました。初めて出会った若者同士が笑顔で声を掛け合う、ボールをパスする、フィールドを走る、めいっぱい蹴る。ボールを渡し合うことでみんなの心が通い合う。言葉では表現しきれないダイナミックな空気が流れる----プレイが終わった夕方、大きな入道雲が空を覆い、あっという間に夕立に襲われ、大きな雨粒が若者たちが懸命に走った校庭の土を激しく打ちました。しかし私は、子どもたちの心から雨上がりのしっとりとした校庭の地面のように、静かな、そして平和に満たされたものを感じ取りました。二日目には英語での会話による交流会で大いに盛り上がりました。 8月1日現在、飯舘村の住民人口6714人のうち福島県内の他の血町村に避難している人々は6164人で、半数以上の3807人が福島市内に避難しています。県外に避難している人々は286人(484家族) で、 28都道府県にまたがっています。この地域の子どもたちやその家族が一日も早く自分の家に帰り、元の学校で楽しく学び、遊べる日がくることを強く祈っています。

What makes a “damaged car”? Basically, a “damaged car” is a repaired car in which the part repaired cannot be replaced with screws. An example of this would be the damaged car frame. It’s this car frame in which the parts are basically attached on by screws.

Your Typical “Damaged Car” Some of the many negative things people often say include, [Damaged car? No way!], [I would NEVER buy a damaged car!] [Damaged cars are bad luck!]. We get it. These are legitimate statements. So, let’s first take a look at what exactly a damaged car is. 多くの方が口にするのは「事故車は嫌だ」「中古車だったら事故車意外が欲しい」「事故車は買わない、買いたくない」「事故車は縁起が悪い」などなど。確かにごもっとも。納得です。では、そもそも事故車とは何なのでしょうか？

基本的には「ネジで交換できない部分を修理した車」の事をいいます。要するに、車の骨格となるフレームにダメージを負った車。車はフレームが基礎となり、そのフレームにネジで部品を付けて行くのが基本となります。

So this is a “damaged car”? For example, a car that has excessive damages to the left and right door is not considered a “damaged car” because the doors can easily be replaced using screws. There is no actual frame damage. On the other hand, [a rear-end collision that warps the general whole area near the tail lamp] is considered frame damage. The whole end panel cannot be replaced with a screw.

What About Cars Now? A “damaged car” that gets hit in one place has a possibility of having the whole frame warped, which leads to a change in the car’s measurements, which in turn affects its ability to drive straight. However, cars now are designed with more strength to withstand overall damage when they’re hit in just one place. With the new flagship store in the works of opening in Beverly Center, first we went in for a job trial report at the Pop-up store to find out more.

What is a "Store manager" and an "Area manager"? How often do you need to contact the Japan head quarter?

All UNIQLO products and concepts are globally uniﬁed and managers come from all over the world to Japan for meetings. But most other things like training new employees are based locally. For UNIQLO, all employees sharing the same core value is very important, but at the same time we pursue a way to bring out the best performance in each and everyone, while not tying them down to a rigid rule.

Japanese egg omelette with sea urchin 3 eggs 5 pieces of sea urchin (uni) 5 pieces of half green perilla (aojiso)

75ml Japanese soup stock (dashi) 1 tsp suger 1 tbsp milder soy sauce

Adding too much oil is not good. Instead, try soaking a paper towel with oil and wiping down the frying pan with it.

Junmai Sake

1. After mixing together the Japanese soup stock, sugar, and soy sauce, add a beaten egg to it and mix well. 2. Add oil to a Japanese egg omelette pan and warm on medium heat. After doing so, add the ingredients from Step 1 so they fills 1/3 of the pan. Fold the egg over as it cooks. 3. Repeat Step 2 by folding over the egg two to three times. 4. After it’s done cooking, cut the egg into pieces. Next, cut holes in the center of the egg pieces and add some green perilla and sea urchin in the cut holes of the egg.
