Ramekin First opening last year in July, this shop has gained sudden popularity from its daily homemade desserts. Using organic milk and seasonal organic fruit from the Farmer’s Market, this shop creates exquisitely delicious ice creams and sherbets of the season. Earl Grey and jasmine-flavored ice cream and many other flavors are also made fresh everyday. Topping their ice cream with their freshly baked homemade cookies is also amazing. Vietnam is the setting this month, for a story about a pair of young siblings that juggle schoolwork with caring for the family livestock. 学校と家畜の世話を両立している幼い姉弟のエピソード、舞台はベトナムです。

visited a tiny little farming village in Vietnam, about 2 hours away from the capital, Hanoi, by car. Vietnam is one of the world’s key rice-producing countries, and great expanses of cultivated land marked the way to the village. Perhaps since the rice planting had just finished, the rice plants had grown lush and green, making for quite a beautiful scene. Agriculture is a key industry, but certainly there are people who cannot take part, due to various circumstances. Mr. Nguyen, who I spoke with, was one of them. According to the family’s grandfather, “Since birth, my son had bad eyesight and couldn’t work on the farm. Perhaps it’s from the herbicides that were sprayed during the Vietnam War. My daughter-in-law worked hard in his place, but she came down sick, and wasn’t able to buy medicine, so she died.” ADRA developed a project called Cow Bank, directed towards families like this, who had members with disabilities and had lost their breadwinners. It was a program where ADRA would lend out young female cows to be raised, and in return, the firstborn of those cows would be given back to by raised by other families. The subsequent offspring did not need to be returned, and could be sold, or raised for milk in the case of females, thus becoming a source of income for families. Mr. Nguyen, the father of children, stated, “With the loss of my wife, who was the family breadwinner, I despaired over how we were going to get by, but by cow borrowing we were able to make a living. The family’s grandmother agreed, “Thanks to these cows we’ve been able to make a living, and my two grandchildren were able to go to school and study, as well.” The children help raise the cows while they attend school. “I wake up early in the morning and pump water for the cows to drink before going to school, and after I get home, I help with cutting grass for the cows, as well. These cows are family!” said the 10-year old older sister. In response, the 7-year old brother proudly boasted, “Our cow has already given birth to 5 babies. Amazing, right!”

If you’re going to bring a car back to Japan, which cars are difficult to transport? Basically cars that have never been registered, or in essence, new cars require a lot of time and are realistically very challenging to bring back to Japan. However, the car you are using now, being that it is used, will not be a problem. etting a bird’s eye view of Waikiki from the sky is something we’ve never experienced. Truth be told, we’ve actually never really thought about it. This time, we were able to get onboard a helicopter and get that view of Waikiki! It’s definitely a completely different experience from what you see when taking off from an airplane. We saw a nature-filled island surrounded by the blue ocean with a patch of buildings. It was a pleasure seeing something that we’ve never seen before!
