Those of you who love to boast about how much you love spicy food can put your taste buds to the test with these super spicy ramens!

n e m a R n o h c O ro Little Tokyo Orochon Ramen’s Special #2 Challenge was introduced to the world on the reality food show “Man v. Food.” The rules are that you have to finish the Special #2 ramen, which is about a 100 times spicier than the medium spicy ramen, down to the last drop within 30 minutes. They say that about only 1 out of every 100 people who try to take on this beastly challenge can actually finish.

A Honduran elementary school shows that schools are necessary not just for academics. 学力向上だけではない学校の必要性を、ホンジュラスの小学校を例に考えます。

“Y

ay, good thing the rain stopped quickly!” “Yeah, now we can study a bit more!” “I want to study in a classroom with a roof soon!” This was the sort of conversation that took place in a small elementary school in the Central American country of Honduras, not far from the United States. The rainy season was about to begin when I visited, and at times we ran up against squalls. One day, a squall arose while I was moving my car, and though I walked along the engorged riverbank for awhile, there was no bridge to be found. When I asked the villagers, I found out that the bridge had been washed away by a hurricane several years ago, and was never rebuilt. The village’s only elementary school was on the other side of the river, so the children of the area we visited had become unable to attend school. Moreover, the local government and administration had no funds for reconstruction, and two years had passed without even this one bridge being rebuilt. This situation would continue until the bridge has been rebuilt and the river could be crossed. A local branch of ADRA, the international NGO that I worked with, borrowed a local residence and restarted classes as a makeshift classroom. Despite its purpose, the space was narrow, not all the students could fit inside, and there weren’t even enough desks, or chairs. Even then, the students would attend classes in this roofless classroom, without fail. When rain suddenly started to fall, the children outside would pack into the narrow classroom to wait it out. This may seem pitiful in the telling, but in reality, the children’s expressions were bright and cheerful, and they would say optimistic things like, “I’m happy I was able to come to school!” and “Once the bridge is done, I want to go and see my friends again at our old school.” Even without a roof, a classroom becomes an important place for children to develop, and a school is a vital resource for that reason as well.

ーイ、雨が早く止んでよかったよね～！」「うん、これで少しはまた勉強できるわね！」「ぼくは早く屋根のある教室で勉強したいなあ～！」アメリカからそれほど遠くない中央アメリカのホンジュラスにある小さな小学校では、このような会話が交わされていました。私が訪れたのは雨期が始まろうとしている時期で、時々スコールに出くわすことがありました。その日も車で移動中にスコールに遭い、水かさが少し増えた川に沿ってってしばらく走って来たのですが、どこにも橋が見当たりません。村人に尋ねると数年前にハリケーンで流されてしまい、その後は再建していないとのことでした。村の唯一の小学校は川の向こう側にあるので、この地区の子どもたちが学校に行けなくなってしまいました。地方行政や政府に復興予算がなく、たった一本の橋も架けられないまま約2年が過ぎようとしていたのです。学校に行けない状態は、橋が再建され、道路が開通するまで続きました。そこで私の働いていた国際NGO、ADRAの現地支部では小学校のない地区で民家を借り、教室代わりにして授業を再開することにしたのです。教室といっても狭くて生徒がみんな入りきれず、机もイスも足りない状況でした。それでも、生徒たちは屋根のない教室に休まず登校してきてくれました。にわか雨が降り始めると、外にいた子どもたちも狭い教室にすし詰めになって雨が止むのを待つ、というような学校生活です。話だけを聞くと気の毒に思えますが、実際、子どもたちの表情は明るく朗らかで「学校に来れるようになったので、とっても嬉しいです！」「橋ができたら、元の学校に行って友達と会いたいです」など、前向きな言葉を発していました。たとえ屋根がなくても教室は子どもたちの大切な成長の場所になる、このような面でも学校は必要とされています。
