An outdoor obstacle race. The course contains 20 obstacles, such as climbing a slippery slope (slippery mountain) and running through mud (mud pits). Despite being quite a rigorous race, there are many female participants as well. his is a story from a visit to a village 2 hours north of the Nicaraguan capital of Managua, near the border with neighboring Honduras. This was a village without schools, hospitals, or other such public infrastructure. When I passed by a home pieced together with rough board, that didn’t have so much as a door, I glimpsed upon an unusual scene. Within were a child of 2, two children of 12, a 15-year old girl carrying a baby, and two women in their 30s and 40s, respectively. I thought it was a family of 6 siblings, but in fact it was a family spanning 4 generations. I’m the granny. The one in her 30s is my daughter, the 15year old carrying the baby and the 12-year olds are my grandchildren, and the baby is my great-grandchild,‚Äù the oldest woman stated, providing introductions. What surprised me further was that the 40-something granny, her 30-something daughter, and her teenage grandchildren, were all learning basic literacy and math skills from a volunteer instructor from the city. In an environment like a village without schools, basic education is normally unobtainable. Furthermore, for such women, who give birth and raise children in their teens, aside from learning from volunteer instructors in their homes, there simply aren‚Äôt any other opportunities to receive an education. In Nicaragua, one of the most impoverished nations in Central South America, the development of a comprehensive educational system and construction of schools have made little progress. Nevertheless, in the 7 years that have passed since my visit, the overall literacy rate has risen nearly 10% from the 68% at the time. Perhaps this reflects the persistence and determination of volunteer teachers. The aforementioned instructor stated, “I myself was fortunate in being able to receive an education. And now I’m happy to devote myself to the education of those who aren’t as fortunate. “Such passions surely lend great strength to the studies of these children.

カラグアの首都マナグアから車で北東部に２時間走り、隣国ホ ンジュラスとの国境に近い農村を訪れたときのことです。 ここは 学校や病院などの公共施設がない村でした。私は板を張り合わせたた けでドアもない一軒家に立ち寄り、 ちょっと不思議な光景を垣間見ま した。中には2歳の子ども1名、12歳の子ども2名、赤ちゃんを抱いた 15歳の女の子1名、 さらに30代と40代の女性が各1名。6人姉妹かと 思いきや、4世代に渡る一家族だというのです。 「私はおばあちゃん。30 代の子は娘、赤ちゃんを抱いている15歳の子と12歳の子は孫、抱か れている赤ちゃんは曾孫よ」 と最年長の女性が紹介してくれました。 もうひとつ驚かされたのは、40代のおばあちゃん、30代の娘、10代 の孫、3世代の女性たちが、町からやって来るボランティアの教師に読 み書きや簡単な算数を習っていることでした。学校がない農村という 環境では基礎教育が受けられません。 さらに10代前半で出産して家 で子どもを育てている境遇も相まって、彼女たちのように自宅でボラ ンティア教師に教えてもらう以外、教育を受ける機会がないのです。 中南米の最貧困国のひとつであるニカラグアでは、子どもたちに必要 な教育制度の徹底、学校の建設などが遅々として進まないのが現状で す。 それでも私が訪問した当時68％だった識字率は、7年経った現在、 統計上で約10％上昇しています。ボランティア教師らの忍耐強い努力 が少しずつ結実しているのでしょう。前出の教師は 「私自身は幸い教育 を受けることができました。 そして今は恵まれない人たちの教育のため に奉仕ができて幸せです」 と話してくれました。 このような気持ちも、子ど もたちの”学び”を支える大きな力となっているはずです。

Izakaya Food at Home Izakaya represent Japanese casual cuisine and allow you to enjoy many different foods. Let’s try and make some popular menu items at home.
Sake-Steeped Clams 1 pound clams 5 oz Japanese Sake (Junmai-shu) 1 teaspoon butter 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped 8 leaves green perilla (shiso), finely chopped Japanese parsley (mitsuba) for ser ving

DRINK
Junmai-shu (sake)
Dissolve one tablespoon salt into 2 cups of water. Add clams and let sit for 2-3 hours until all of the grit is expelled. Insert the well-cleaned clams, garlic, Junmai-shu (sake), and butter into a pot. Cover and steam for about 3 minutes. Remove the lid and add the shiso (perilla) leaves. Remove the meat from the opened clam shells. Garnish with mitsuba (Japanese parsley).

Introducing two Japanese sake that pair well with izakaya menu items. Junmai sake goes perfectly with sake-steamed clams also being one of the ingredients in the dish itself. Many of the clam’s umami components are also present in Jukuju “Mikagego” Junmai Sake. The interaction between the two really brings out the delicious flavor.
Fukuju Junmai Ginjo Sake Brewed through a process of slow fermenting sake rice from Hyogo Prefecture. Fukuju Junmai Ginjo is an elegant sake with its own characteristics such as rich aroma like that of a wine. This sake was enjoyed at the 2012 Nobel Prize Banquet. Best served chilled.
Fukuju “Mikagego” Junmai Sake This Junmai Sake is the pride of the historic brewery ShuShin-Kan, established in 1751. The sake is brewed from locally grown rice and Koji (malted rice) from Hyogo prefecture and is made with Miyamizu (water from Nishinomiya city), water that has been long valued as being ideal for creating excellent sake. This sake is full-bodied with a clean finish. Can be served chilled or warm.
