The second installment of the Nepal series. This month’s focus is on the children who set out to see what they could do for others. ネパール編の後編。今回は”人のためにできること”を考え、実行した子どもたちについて。

ithin the independent living communities for Hansen’s disease sufferers that remain in Nepal, there were many who moved in after developing the disease in their youths. There were also many who married amongst themselves and then continued their lives here. With little assistance from the government, they were exhorted to live independently, but this certainly wasn’t an easy task for those who had lost their limbs to the disease. Consequently, there were many households where children that were born healthy could not receive an adequate education. Soba was born in this colony to two Hansen’s disease sufferers who married one another. Due to the disease, her mother only had the first joint left of each finger, but learned knitting despite this, in order to provide for her child’s education. By tying the knitting needles to her hands she knit mufflers, and with the proceeds from selling these, she was able to let her daughter attend school. Witnessing her mother’s efforts, Soba resolved to help the sick and suffering in need, and decided on nursing as a profession. Even after getting married and become a mother, she has still remained active as a nurse. Several years ago, such circumstances forced the young people on ADRA Japan’s volunteer tour to think. One member, Sato, said, “With the 10,000 yen I brought along, I want to plant fruit trees that will provide food for everyone.” After discussion with the staff, saplings for peach, pear, orange, and other fruit trees were soon prepared, and planted within the colony. The fruits grew splendidly, and this became a lasting memory for the volunteer members and locals alike. Living together on this planet, we all must help one another to live and survive. The children who had experienced the Hansen’s disease colony firsthand realized this truth, brainstormed, and set out to implement what they were able to do. “What is it that I can do for the sake of someone else?” - I pray that all the children of this world will take to heart this question, that I constantly ask myself.

パールに残るハンセン病患者の自立住宅集落には、若くして発病後、移住してきた人がたくさんいます。同じ境遇の人と結婚して、ここで生活を続けるケースもあります。政府からの援助はほとんどなく自立して生活するよう促されますが、手や足を失ってしまった人にとっては決して容易なことではありません。そのため健康に生まれた子どもが十分に教育を受けられない家庭も多いのです。このコロニーで生まれ育ったソバさんの両親も患者同士で結婚しました。母親は病気のため手の指が第二関節までしかありませんが、何とか子どもに教育を受けさせたいとの思いから編み物を学びました。編み棒を手に縛りつけてもらいマフラーを編み、それを売って得た収入で彼女を学校に行かせたのです。そんな母を見ていたソバさんは、病気で苦しむ人を助けてあげたいと考えるようになり、看護師という職業を選びました。結婚して母親になった現在も看護師として活躍しています。数年前、ADRA Japanが主催するボランディアツアーに参加していた若者たちは、この状況に対して考えさせられたようでした。メンバーの一人、佐藤くんは「僕が持ってきた1万円で、みなさんの食料になるような果物の木を植えたい」と言ってくれました。さっそくスタッフと相談して、桃、梨、みかんなどの苗木を手配してもらい、コロニー内に植樹しました。果物は見事に育ち、ボランティアメンバーにも現地の人にも忘れられない記念になっています。この地球上に住む私たちは、お互いに助け合って生きていく必要があります。ハンセン病コロニーを体験した子どもたちはその事実に気づき、考え、できることを実行しました。”誰かのために自分ができることは何か？”ーー私がいつも自分自身に投げかけているこの問いについて、子どもたちにも考えて欲しいと願っています。
