Racing also became a valuable experience. While a goal for a runner is to reach hard for the finish line, respecting each other became something I’ve learned to embrace. In tough times and the easy times, the important thing is to progress forward. I remember in one race, a female runner once said. “Every step is good!”. I felt exactly the same way. I realized that the concept of running is basically the concept of life. The more you run, the happier you become. When I was a college student, I had the opportunity to play golf at my part-time job. The whole experience was nothing but heaven to me. Golf is a sport not dominated by those of physical strength, but one of those rare sports where all men and women play on the same field. From grandfather and grandson to husband and wife playing together, this is a sport to enjoy, even as a hobby. On top of that, walking while playing the game adds a bit of exercise to our bodies, making that much more healthier. In LA, there are many golf courses and even choosing a golf course is fun. Even one can experience unfamiliar things in a familiar place. This helps refresh the mind. First things first. If you start... How to

For those who want to begin right away, let’s first learn some techniques and look at the necessary to tools we need to begin. これから始めたい！という人のために方法と必要な道具を指南します！

Running

First, let’s go for a run! Even if it’s the same course, you will always find something new. Even just checking out the scenery is interesting. But before that, we also have to stretch. While a full stretch is ideal, partial stretching is also okay. If you run everyday, you will learn what parts of your body get tired easily. In my case, the side of my buttocks are always my problem area. So even if I don’t have time, I always aim to stretch the area regardless.

Equipment For equipment, the first things we need to gather are running shoes, and socks that don’t come off, and of course ideal clothing for the sport. For those running for the first time, phiten tape and gel are highly recommended. Using this will allow for muscular relaxation and leaving them in the perfect condition to run. The tape is most effective when placed on the part of the body that becomes stiff before running. The gel is best when used for warm up and cool down before and after running.

まず走ってみる！に限ります。同じコースでも何か新しい発見があるので、景色を見ているだけでもおもしろいですよ。その前に、絶対ストレッチを行いましょう。フルストレッチが理想ですが、部分的でも OK。毎日走っていると体の疲れやすい部分を体感するようになります。僕の場合はおしりの側部なので、時間がなくてもその部分だけはストレッチをするように心がけています。

始めの一歩としてはランニングシューズ、かかとがずれないソックス、ウェアを揃えましょう。継続的に走り始めた方には、ファイテン(phiten)のテープとジェルがおすすめです。これらを使うと筋肉をリラックスさせた良い状態で走ることができます。テープは体の硬くなる部分に走る前に貼るのが効果的。ジェルはウォームアップとクールダウン用を、走る前後で使い分けるのがベストです。

Golf How to

Let’s begin by practicing hitting. The basics of the swing is very important. So before we develop our own swinging-style, we recommend learning the basics from an instructor, or a advanced golfer friend. Once we learn to hit the ball straight, it’s off to the courses we go. Of course, we will start with the 9-hole course and short courses first. There we will pick up the manners and rules of golf! 打ち方の練習からスタート。スイングの基本はとても大切なので、自己流のクセがつく前に、練習場でインストラクターまたは上手な友人などに教わることをおすすめします。ボールをまっすぐ飛ばせるようになったらコースへ！ 9コースや距離の短いショートコースから始めて、ラウンドやマナー、ルールに慣れるといいと思います。

Equipment For a driver, iron, and putter set, we recommend a set that’s made of something lightweight and easy to hit with. Even without using strength, your swing can make the ball fly. Also, regular shoes make swinging very difficult. Also the incline of the course will make things slippery, so shoes with spikes are required. If we do a course, we should also skip renting a golf cart. On top of it being healthy by walking, we can also save on the rental! ドライバー、アイアン、パターが揃ったゴルフセッ

Here, we have a simple 3-mile loop surrounding the Rose Bowl. From beginners to advanced runners who aim to participate in a full marathon, this place is perfect for anyone. The entire course is flat and gives the feel of a practice area. There aren’t any ponds, so there are no worries of losing balls. This course was obviously designed for beginners who want to play without any kind of worries. Because the rough isn’t so long, it’s also perfect when playing a round of golf. The number one feature of this course is the elevated green. Because the green is elevated, you can practice your pitching arm. Tustin Ranch At the intermediate level, here is a course worth trying out. It comes with a caddy, giving you the feel of being a tournament professional. Even though it’s an additional fee, if you have the lines read to you, perhaps your score will change? Throughout the course, there are plenty of moderately raised and lowered hazards. For example, on No. 7, if you do a tee shot that veers to the left, there are 3 bunkers that are there waiting. As for No. 12, because it’s surrounded by water, it could get very nerve-wracking, but at the same time an excellent test of skill. The course itself is not tricky. As long as you don’t make the mistake of “attacking” the course, you will have tons of fun playing on it. 中級になったら、このコースにチャンレジ！キャディをつけられるので、トーナメントプロになった気分に浸れます。別途料金がかかりますが、ラインを読んでもらえばスコアが変わるかも?! コース全体は適度な起伏に富んでいてハザードもあります。抜粋するとNo.7にはティーショットを左に曲げてしまうと3つのバンカーが待っていたり、No.12では水に囲まれた中でティーショットを打つという緊張があったり…腕試しに最適。コースそのものはトリッキーではないので、攻めどころを間違わなければ大いに楽しめますよ。

For those advanced-level golfers, here is the place to be. Designed by the Jack Nicklaus Group, it’s a very well polished course. Japanese professional golfer Shigeki Maruyama used this course as his home course when he competed in the United States. Because the course is inland and it is dry, the flight of the ball is different than it usually is. It actually feels like the ball is flying. Also, hitting a crooked shot could be very unfortunate. Within the bushes, snakes tend to come out. Therefore, balls lost in bushes cannot be retrieved. Even the most advanced golfers can still hit crooked shots without realizing it, so everyone must be careful. Compared to the other two, the cost to play at this course is slightly more expensive, but it’s definitely worth it.

上級者が楽しむなら、ここですね。ジャックニクラウスグループの設計したコースで、とても洗練されています。日本の丸山茂樹プロがアメリカ参戦中のホームコースでもありました。内陸部で乾燥しているためか、いつもよりボールが飛ぶ感じがします。打つ際に曲げてしまったら大変！ブッシュの中は蛇が出るなど危険なので、ボールを取りに行ってはいけません。上級者といえども思わず力が入って曲がる場合があるので注意してください。プレイの値段は他の2つより少し高めですが、損はさせないチャンレジコースです。

The innocence of children can unlock a closed heart. We share the story of a small but heartwarming miracle, brought about by an international aid mission.

子どもの純粋な心が、閉ざされた子どもの心を開く。今回は国際支援がもたらした、小さな温かい奇跡のお話です。

TRAVELINGTO OPEN A CLOSED HEART - JAPAN

eventeen-year old Tokyo resident Masaki was in a state of long-term truancy, and nearly 3 years had passed since he had exchanged words with his father, who lived with him. I happened to meet him in Los Angeles, and invited him to join other youths in volunteering to dig wells in Cambodia. Even in the plane, and even when we landed in Cambodia, he kept his earphones on, and avoided contact with others. The second day, the work of well-digging began, and the village children gathered one by one to witness this rare sight. It was then that Masaki started playing along with the village children, with the handmade toys that they carried. Though he could speak neither English nor Cambodian, he truly seemed to enjoy himself as he patiently laughed and played with the children. The next day, he helped the children to carry buckets of mud, traded his Japanese treats for the children’s local ones, and quickly moved into the center of the social circle. Witnessing this transformation, I could only react with surprise. What brought out these hidden abilities from Masaki wasn’t the splendid Japanese educational system, but rather the interaction with these children. On the flight back, he said that he wanted pictures of himself playing with the village children, declaring, “I want to show my father and my friends!” A one-week volunteer trip to dig wells was enough to change the course of a 17-year old young man’s life. I sent him the pictures, and when I called him, he said, “Thank you for the pictures. They were great, but when I showed them to my father, he said, ‘If you have so much free time, then study for the entrance exams.’ My father doesn’t understand how I feel.” My own feelings were complicated, as well. Soon after, when I called his mother to see how things were going, she said, “He still tends to stay in his room, but he goes to school now, and sometimes he even says, ‘I want to go volunteer in Cambodia again.’” Upon hearing this happy news, my heart was finally relieved of its burden.

京に住む17歳の正樹くんは高校を登校拒否、同居する父親とは3年近く口をきいていない状態でした。私はLAで彼と出会い、若者たちを連れてカンボジアの井戸掘りボランティアに行く計画に誘いました。人と話すのが苦手な彼は飛行機の中でも、カンボジアに着いてもイヤホンを付けて人を避けていました。2日目から井戸掘り作業が始まり、その珍しい光景を見ようと、村の子どもたちが続々と集まりました。そこで正樹くんは、村の子どもたちが持っていた手作りの玩具で一緒に遊び始めたのです。英語もカンボジア語も話せないながら、子どもたちと大声で笑いながら楽しそうに根気強く遊んでいました。翌日には、子どもたちに指示してバケツで泥を運んだり、彼らが持ち寄った現地の食べものと日本から持参した菓子を交換して食べたりと、すっかり輪の中心になっていたのです。その変貌ぶりに、私はただ驚くばかり。正樹くんの中に秘められていたこの能力を引き出したのは、日本の立派な教育システムではなく、子どもたちとの心の交流でした。帰りの機内で彼は村の子どもと遊んだ写真が欲しいと言い、「親父や友だちに見せてやりたいんだ！」と声を弾ませました。わずか1週間の井戸掘りボランティア旅行で、17歳の少年は人生が変わったのでした。彼に写真を送ったあと話をしたところ、「写真ありがとうございました。いい写真だったけど、親父に見せたら『こんな暇があるなら受験勉強しろ』だって。親父はおれの気持ちなんかわからないんだよね」と言われ、私は複雑な気持ちになってしまいました。のちに彼の母親に様子を聞くと「家では部屋に隠りがちですが、学校に行くようになり、時々『またカンボジアでボランティアやりたいな』とも言ってます」と嬉しい知らせがあり、私は胸を撫で下ろしたのでした。

Family dental care 家族で考える歯の健康

This month, I’d like to introduce you to the history of dental implants. An implant can be defined as a medical device manufactured to replace a missing biological structure, support a damaged biological structure, or enhance an existing biological structure. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. The story of how dental implants were invented is quite an interesting tale. Dr. Branemark was a Swedish orthopedic surgeon who was doing research into bone healing in 1957. A major problem in orthopedic surgery was getting bones to heal, especially where there were metal screws and plates holding the bones in place, like after a car crash, for example. The human body does not like foreign materials, and tries to “reject” them by refusing to heal right next to the material, much like with a splinter in your finger. As part of Dr. Branemark’s research, he had fitted small pieces of titanium into the leg bones of rabbits. At the end of the research period, he wanted to remove these titanium pieces, to examine them. To his astonishment, he found that it was impossible. The titanium had become fused to the bone. Or, more accurately,the bone had grown around the titanium. This had never been seen before, and at first Dr. Branemark thought his experiment had been ruined! But in a flash of inspiration, he realized that this might be a way of anchoring artificial tooth roots to replace missing teeth. This was a remarkable mental leap. That was how dental implants were invented.

今回からインプラント治療について詳しくお話します。インプラントは歯の構造的な治療用として認められた医療機器で、一般的には失った歯の代用として使用されています。インプラント発明の陰には興味深い秘話があります。1957年、スウェーデンの整形外科医ブローネマルクは骨の治療に関して、事故などで損傷した骨を支えるため金属のねじやプレートが使用できるかの研究を行っていました。人間の身体は異物侵入を嫌い、損傷部分の周辺組織は拒否反応を起こしますー指にトゲが刺さったときのようにー。そこでウサギを使い、脛にチタン製の小さな破片を設置して観察、それを取り除こうとしたとき驚くべき結果が…。チタンと骨が拒否反応なく結合したのです！さらに、彼は実験結果を失った歯の代用として固定型の人工歯根に応用できるのでは？と考えました。この見事なひらめきが、多くの人を救っているインプラント発明のきっかけとなったのです。
