The bonito flakes are directly imported from Japan and are shaved from the fish for that day, leaving only exception flavor and taste. But the true secret behind the flavor of the ramen is not just the enthusiasm put in every bowl of ramen, it is also the chivalrous spirit of the chef.

は(地震で)壊れたけど、学校は休みたくない！」「学校も地震で壊れたから授業ができるかわからないわよ」「屋根も壁もなくても、先生がいるなら僕らは学校に行きたいよ！」

This was a conversation between a mother and child in the city of Pisco in the Incan region of Peru, several days after the great earthquake. For hundreds of years, under the ever-present threat of earthquakes, the pioneers of Ican civilization used advanced stone techniques to craft incredibly earthquake-resilient constructions. However, most buildings built in the modern era were destroyed by the August 15th, 2007 earthquake, leading to many casualties. In Pisco alone, over 85,000 buildings were destroyed and 430 citizens perished. The elementary school of the child mentioned earlier was completely destroyed as well.

The children hoped to quickly go back to school and continue their studies. In response, parents, guardians, and other related parties concentrated their efforts on reopening the schools. Reusable wood and plywood salvaged from the rubble was fashioned into makeshift walls for temporary classrooms, and classes were restarted shortly thereafter. Amidst all the misfortune, it was serendipitous that roofs were unnecessary in this region with rare rainfall. At the school that I visited, about 90 children were happily learning, despite the relentless, shining sun. Overhead, netting, scraps of cloth, and old sheets were strung together as a shield against direct sunlight.

子どもたちの願いは早く学校に戻り、勉強を続けることでした。これに応え、子どもたちに生きる希望を持たせようと、保護者や関係者は学校再開に向けて尽力しました。がれきを片付け、再利用できる木材や薄いベニヤ板などで仮設の壁を建てて仮設教室を作り、ほどなく授業を再開しました。雨がほとんど降らない地域で屋根が必要なかったのは不幸中の幸いです。私が訪問した学校でも、燦々と降り注ぐ太陽の下、約90人の子どもたちが明るく学んでいました。頭上には網を張った上に、つなぎ合わせたボロ切れや古いシーツなどをカバーとして乗せて直射日光を避けていました。

After nearly 2 years of these painful conditions, a replacement threestory concrete school building was constructed for these children, with financial assistance from Japan. The earnest feelings of these children who wanted to go to school helped make the construction of this new school a reality. “We survived after the earthquake. We thank God for saving our lives and now we work together for our future so that we can serve others.” And thus a new hope began to flow from these children.

Family dental care 家族で考える歯の健康

Most people think that crooked teeth are just an aesthetic problem. Well, that’s far from the truth. Crooked teeth can be in the form of crowded teeth, deep bite or under bite. If the overlap of your upper teeth over the lower teeth is more than what it should be, you have a deep bite. Ideally, the lower front teeth lie behind the upper teeth when the jaws are closed. In under bite, the lower teeth lie in front of the upper teeth.Crooked and teeth not only interfere with proper chewing, but may also increase your chance of developing gum disease. Well-aligned teeth are easy to clean. If your teeth are crooked, cleaning the food particles that get caught between them becomes much harder. And incomplete plaque removal can cause your gums to bleed, and eventually lead to other forms of gum disease.Crooked teeth can also cause traumatic occlusion, or a bite where excess force is placed on the teeth. This can injure your teeth-supporting structures (periodontium) and cause loss of bone around the teeth. Lastly, when teeth don’t fit together properly, the muscles must compensate for this poor fit. This added muscle tension can cause pain and various symptoms of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. Although this misaligned bite or malocclusion of the jaw can cause TMJ, the TMJ can then make the original problem even worse.

歯並びは外見的な問題だと思われていますが、それだけではありません。理想的な歯並びは、奥歯を噛み合わせたときに、下の前歯が上の前歯で少し隠れます。噛んだときに下の歯が見えない状態は過蓋咬合、下の歯が上の歯にかぶさる状態は反対咬合と呼ばれています。歯並びが悪いとしっかり咀嚼できないだけでなく、歯肉炎の危険性を高めます。歯みがきがしづらいため歯間に食べ物が残りやすく、歯垢除去が不十分になると歯茎から出血、最終的には歯茎のあらゆる病気を引き起こします。さらに過剰な力が歯にかかり、歯の病気である外傷性咬合や、口の中の咬傷になることも。いずれも歯周組織を傷つけ、歯の周りの骨密度を低下させます。噛み合わせが悪い場合、平衡にさせなければいけません。筋肉の緊張は、傷みや顎関節症のさまざまな兆候となります。正しくない歯並びや顎の不正咬合は顎関節症の原因になるほか、顎関節症の悪化にもつながります。
