Not only is this place the number one wholesale rice dealer in Japan, this place also uses the highest quality Niigata Koshihikari rice. That must mean the rice here is amazing! Casually strolling into a set meal restaurant and having the highest quality rice is life at its finest. Nonetheless, Editor S is still “Team Udon”. Wait, or is she? Maybe she can’t decide what team to be on.

The passion to “learn” has the power to triumph over adversity. The refugee children in Sudan taught me this lesson. ”学び”への情熱が艱難辛苦を越えるパワーにもなりうる。そのことを教えてくれたのは、スーダンの難民の子どもたちでした。

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM in SUDAN

ver the course of nearly 20 years of continuous civil war in Sudan, nearly 2 million people lost their lives and over 600,000 became refugees in Kenya, Ethiopia, Chad, and other neighboring countries. In 2005, repatriation finally began, and ADRA Japan, a non-profit organization I was part of, started local activities by the border Ethiopia with the goal of supporting repatriation to Sudan. The majority of the refugees had been living in refugee camps for over a decade, and among them were children that were born and had lived their entire lives in the camps.

ーダンでは約20年間続いた内戦により約200万人が犠牲となり、6 0 万人以上の人たちが隣国のケニアやエチオピア、チャドなどに逃げて難民となりました。ようやく2005年から難民の帰還が始まり、わたしが所属していたNPO法人「ADRA Japan」はエチオピアに避難していた難民の帰還支援活動をするため、国境地域で活動を始めました。難民の大半は10年以上シェルター ( 難民キャンプ)で生活をしてきた人たちで、その中にはキャンプで生まれた子どもたちもいました。

Soon after repatriation efforts began, literary education for the children began as well. Despite the name, this didn’t take place at school. Rather, these were outdoor classes using a small 1-meter blackboard suspended from a tree trunk. At first there were neither proper instruments like pencils or paper, nor properly educated teachers, but many children gathered, nonetheless. Before long, adults started to join in, as well. Most of these people had been living off distributed rations for long periods of time, without actual jobs to speak of, and were unable to read or write. Once notebooks and pencils were procured by volunteers, instruction in how to write the alphabet began. Held by shaky hands, the pencils crept unsteadily across the pages, and the resultant scribbles were unrecognizable as writing. Undaunted, the children and adults alike practiced with passion in their eyes.

難民帰還の開始後すぐに、子どもたちに向けた識字教育が始まりました。とはいっても学校はなく、1メートルほどの小さな黒板を木の幹にぶら下げての野外授業です。最初はノートや鉛筆などの道具がなく、きちんと教育を受けた教師もいないのですが、たくさんの子どもたちが集まりました。ほどなくして、大人も参加するようになりました。ほとんどの人が長い期間、配給されたものだけで生活してきたため、手に職もなく、文字の読み書きもできない状態だったのです。ボランティアからノートや鉛筆が配られるようになると、アルファベットの書き方を習い始めました。震えた手で持った鉛筆が真っ白い紙の上をヨロヨロと歩くような、文字には見えない字でしたが、そんなことは気にかけない様子で、子どもも大人も目をキラキラと輝かせながら練習に励んでいました。

For the children to survive in this kind of environment, many challenges in daily life must be overcome. Drawing water, collecting firewood, caring for livestock, and countless other tasks, all to be completed in an unhygienic environment, life with poverty and lacking in basic necessities - this was their lot in life. Yet despite these harsh conditions, through learning how to write and count, these children’s lives were engaged by hope. “Learning” became their driving force to triumph over adversity.

子どもたちがこのような土地で生き抜くためには、数多くの難題をクリアする必要があります。生活のための水汲みや薪ひろい、家畜の世話など多くの労働、そして不衛生な環境、食料不足、貧困との戦いなど、これらを乗り切らなければならないのは彼らの運命なのです。厳しい状況下にいながら、文字の書き方や数の数え方を学習することで、子どもたちは希望に胸を膨らませて生きるようになっていきます。 ”学び”は苦難を越える原動力にもなりうるのです。

Family dental care 家族で考える歯の健康 This month, I’d like to discuss teeth sensitivity. There are many

people who have hypersensitive teeth. They can’t properly enjoy cold soda, ice cream, fruits, and various other treats. Dental cavities or cracked teeth can cause the sensitivity, so if you fix the cavities or cracks, your sensitivity will go away. But if you have gingival recession, you can have teeth sensitivity too.

That, I believe, is the most common cause of teeth sensitivity. As you grow older, or if you have gum disease, your gums will have receded. Once your gums have recession, the root surface of the teeth will be exposed. The root surface has little holes that link to the nerves inside the teeth, and when the root surface is exposed, these nerves are easily stimulated, resulting in pain. If you brush too hard or use abrasive toothpaste, you may actually be removing tooth structure, especially at the necks of the teeth. That can make your sensitivity even worse. If the gum recession is minor, I would recommend that you use special toothpaste for hypersensitive teeth. If your gum recession is severe and the teeth necks are worn down, you need to have the defects filled in, which will help reduce the sensitivity.

意外に多くの人が感じている、歯の知覚過敏。冷たい食べ物を食べたとき、ズキンと歯にしみる症状のことを指します。虫歯や歯の損傷が原因の場合は、それを治療すれば治ります。しかし最も一般的な原因は、加齢や歯肉炎などによる歯茎の後退です。一度、歯茎が後退すると、歯の根元の表面が露出してしまいます。その部分に神経にまでつながるわずかな欠損ができ、神経が刺激を受けやすくなった結果、傷みを誘発するのです。力を入れて歯を磨いたり、研磨剤入りの歯磨き粉を使うと、歯の組織、特に根元を削ってしまい、さらに事態を悪化させてしまいます。歯肉の後退が軽ければ、知覚過敏用の歯磨き粉の使用をおすすめします。後退が進み、歯の根元がすり減っていたら、欠損箇所を埋めれば回復するでしょう。
