Even after fleeing to Yemen, hardships continue for Somalian refugees. This month, I’ll tell you about the plight of the children among them. イエメンに逃れてもなお、苦境に立たされ続けているソマリア難民。その中で生活する難民の子どもたちの様子をお伝えします。

Children of refugees in Yemen

lthough Yemen, which sits at the southernmost portion of the Arabian Peninsula, is an oil-producing nation, the living conditions of its people would surely place it amongst the most impoverished countries. 30% of its population is children, the majority of which lack even basic education. Compounding these difficult conditions, each year, more than 100,000 refugees arrive from nearby Somalia. Escaping from endless internal conflicts, droughts, and famine, they cross the gulf from Somalia to Yemen, and become refugees.

The children born here know nothing of the “normal world” in which we live. Of course there’s nothing like school here. Subsisting on rations from the UNHCR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), these people have only the barest minimum necessary to survive. Nonetheless, the children I met were trying their best to learn, while living their impoverished lives in these barren desert lands. “I’m thankful to be alive. I can write and draw, and I’m very happy!”“I love to study!” The children said these things with smiles on their faces. Their notebooks, which they showed me, were handmade affairs, little more than bundles of scavenged used papers tied together with string. Even without a school or proper writing instruments, they showed such joy in being able to write and study. I could sense that these pure, simple feelings were like hope for them to keep living and surviving.

ラビア半島の最南端にあるイエメンは石油産出国ですが、人々の暮らしを見ると最貧国と言わざるを得ません。人口の30％が子供で、その多くが基礎教育を受けていません。さらに深刻な問題は、対岸にあるアフリカの小国、ソマリアから毎年10万人を越える難民が流入することです。相次ぐ内戦、そして干ばつによる飢饉にあえぐ人々が海を渡ってイエメンに逃れ、難民になっていました。彼らを乗せた粗末な密航船は、略奪や強姦が横行し、挙げ句の果てに海に突き落とされ命を失う人が多い” 世界で最も危険な亡命ルート”と言われています。たどり着くイエメンは、国民の栄養失調の割合が世界で3番目に高い飢餓国。難民キャンプの環境も劣悪で、食料配給も住居テントもおぼつかない場所に数十万の人々が生きています。生きていること自体が奇跡と言われる過酷な状況なのです。私はその中のひとつを訪れました。

Robberies and rapes run rampant on the crude ships these refugees ride, and ultimately many people lose their lives on the sea, leading this journey to be known as the “world’s most dangerous refugee route.” Upon arriving in Yemen, these refugees find themselves in the nation with the world’s third-highest rate of malnutrition. The condition of refugee camps is deplorable as well, with tens of thousands living in tents in precarious areas with limited and unreliable rations. These are cruel conditions where the act of living itself borders on the miraculous. I undertook a visit to one of these camps.

ここで生まれる子どもたちは、私たちが住む”普通の世界”を知りません。もちろん学校らしきものもありません。UNHCR(国連難民高等弁務官)から支給される、生きていくために必要最低限のものしか持っていないのです。砂漠の果ての不毛の地で困窮していながら、私が出会った子どもたちは懸命に学ぼうとしていました。「生きていてよかった。文字を書いたり絵を描いたりできて、とっても楽しい!」「勉強が大好き!!」と笑顔で言いました。見せてくれたノートは、拾い集めたと思われる使用済みの紙を切り、紐で括り合わせたお手製のもの。学校や文房具が揃わなくとも、彼らは文字を書くことに楽しさを見出し、学習することで生きる喜びを表現しているのです。その純粋な気持ちは、生きる希望になっているようにも感じられました。

Eventually, the couple decided to purchase their own condo through our agency, so that they would no longer need to worry about room vacancies, and would be free to set their baggage down and use it like their own home. We were very happy to introduce this convenient property for a couple like them, who actively go about in Hawaii.

Family dental care 家族で考える歯の健康

Hi, this is Dr. Lee, from MOA dental. This month, I want to discuss dental cleaning and why regular cleaning is important. This can be a bit of a dry topic, but it shouldn’t be neglected. Basically the goal of the cleaning is to remove all of the buildup around the teeth. The build up is dental plaque or dental stone (calculus). There are multiple species of bacteria that are normally present in the mouth. The colonized bacteria forms dental plaque, and when the plaque is hardened by accumulations of minerals from saliva, we call it calculus. The rough surface of calculus provides an ideal medium for further plaque formation, threatening the health of the gums. With brushing and flossing we can remove plaque, which forms calculus later. But once the calculus has formed, it is almost impossible to remove with brushing and flossing alone. That is why we need regular dental office cleaning. The dental office has specialized ultrasonic cleaners and instruments designed to remove buildup as efficiently as possible. Lastly, I want to address a myth that has been circulating. There is a common misunderstanding that frequent cleanings can be harmful to the teeth, since the cleaning instruments are removing tooth material. This is not true. It is natural to have some sensitivity after a cleaning, because the buildup has been removed and the natural tooth surfaces have been exposed. This sensitivity is not caused by the shaved-off tooth surfaces. It will usually go away within a couple of days.
