Popular Farmers’ Markets Santa Monica Farmers’ Market
Twice a week, Third Street Promenade becomes the place to be for chefs from famous restaurants and foodies from all around. On Wednesdays, there is a huge gathering for the Southern California Farmer’s Market where only qualified farmers can participate. Plus, there are many booths selling food, a definite must-see. On Saturdays, you fill find farmers selling organic ingredients. On top of that, every time restaurants from Downtown Santa Monica open up booths, letting people come and try some of their fare. Hollywood Farmers’ Market Of the countless Farmers Markets in Los Angeles, this one in Hollywood is like a huge festival every time! This place is a treasure trove of California-grown vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, eggs, cheese, olives, bread and much more. This Farmer’s Market is packed to the gills, and you can even find shops that sell flowers, herbs, seeds, clothing accessories, and even street musicians playing hip music. What’s for dinner with fresh vegetables Lets make some delicious dishes with fresh vegetables from the Farmer’s Market! Gastronome Takako Murayama has taught us some simple but delicious recipes.
ファーマーズマーケットで新鮮野菜を買ったら、 おいしいごはんを作りましょう！ 料理家むらやまたかこさんに簡単＆おいしいレシピを教えてもらいました。
Broccoflower and Soy Milk Potage Here’s a soup featuring broccoflower, which tastes like broccoli, though it’s actually a type of cauliflower.
カリフラワーの一種でありながら、味はブロッコリーに近い野菜をスープに！
ingredients - 8.8 ounce (250g) broccoflowers, chopped - 1/4 leeks, chopped - 2 small green garlics, minced - 1 cup soy milk - 1 cup water - 1/2 tablespoon olive oil - Salt and black paper to taste - Sliced almond, olive oil, black paper and coriander flower, for serving

(1) Heat up some olive oil in a pot and saute the leek to bring out its sweetness. Then put some green garlic. When you can smell the aroma of the garlic, add and lightly saute the broccoflower. (2) Then, add soy milk and some water to the pot and bring to a boil. After doing so, let it simmer while adding salt and pepper for flavor. Put a lid over the pot and let it cook for about thirty minutes. (3) Put the contents in a blender or use a electric hand mixer and whip the ingredients until it becomes gooey. Add olive oil and continue whipping. (4) When serving, garnish with sliced almonds, olive oil, black pepper, and some coriander/cilantro.

Stewed vegetable and chicken Spring vegetables and chicken, Japanese style! If you use Sukiyaki no Tare, you can’t go wrong with this dish! 春野菜と鶏肉で和食にトライ。 すき焼きのたれを使えば、誰でも失敗なくできる！
ingredients
- 4 chicken wing sticks - 1/3 batch field mustard(or yu choi), chopped - 1/2 batch small turnip - 2 cloves of garlic, crushed - 1 teaspoon minced ginger - 0.4 cup(100ml) Sukiyaki no Tare - 1.2 cups(300ml) water
(1) Cut the field mustard (or yu choi) into one-inch strips. After removing the outer stalk, leaving just a little bit of the stalk, cut the stem into small pieces. (2) Put olive oil in a pot and saute the chicken with garlic and ginger. (3) After the chicken has browned, add the stems, water, and the sukiyaki sauce. Then place a lid, seal tightly and let it cook for twenty minutes. (4) Finally, add the field mustard. Leave the heat on and serve it when the vegetables have become tender. (1)菜の花は1インチ(3cm)ぐらに切る。 小かぶは外側の茎を 何枚か取ったあと、 少し茎を残すように切る。 (2)鍋にオイルを入れ、 にんにく、 しょうが、 鶏肉をいためる。 (3)鶏肉に焼き色がついたら、 かぶ、 すき焼きのたれと水 を入れ、 落としぶたをして約20分煮る。 (4)最後に菜の花を入れ、 しんなりするまで火を通して でき上がり。

There are many schools in developing countries that lack bathrooms. The example of Cambodia illustrates just what an impact remedying this problem can be to children.
発展途上国の中にはトイレがない学校が数多く存在します。 それを解決することがどれだけ子どもたちに好影響を及ぼすか、 カンボジアを例にお伝えします。
GIRLS MISSING SCHOOL IN CAMBODIA
I
was on an elementary school assessment trip through poor villages located in a farming region in central Cambodia. I learned from the principal at one school that during the dry season, the attendance rates of girls in the 4th grade and above would drop. The major reason for this was the lack of bathrooms at school. During the rainy season, girls could relieve themselves hidden by the tall weeds that sprouted up near the school, but they were no longer able to do so during the dry season, when the weeds didn’t grow. Girls who had started menstruating were particularly prone to stop attending school. When I asked female students in attendance during the dry season whether going to school was difficult because of the lack of bathrooms, they replied, “It’s alright, I just hold it in until I go home!” I became quite concerned whether these girls could really get through 5-6 hours a day without using the bathroom. With funds raised in Japan, 100,000 yen was used to build 2 roofed bathrooms in each of 8 schools. They were simple facilities, equipped with 70 gallon water tanks, with water to be drawn by a ladle after each use. Schools that lacked well water were outfitted with systems that collected rainwater runoff from the roofs. There were also schools where 4-foot diameter concrete water storage basins to supply the water tanks were constructed, to collect rainwater during the rainy season. When I visited again at a later date, that same principal told me with a smile that the female students were no longer absent from school. Several girls passed by, walking through campus carrying bamboo pipes filled with drinking water. “There’s no need to worry about drinking water at school anymore. You can go to the bathroom at school, after all,” they said happily. I realized then what a huge difference just a simple bathroom could make in the lives of these girls.

ンボジアでは中部・農村地帯の貧しい村々の小学 校を視察して回りました。ある学校で聞いた校長 先生の説明で、乾期になると4年生以上の女子の出席数 が減ってしまうという現状を知りました。その最大の原 因が、学校にトイレがないことでした。雨期は校庭の回り に子供の背の高さぐらいの雑草が生えていて、女子児童 は休み時間に草むらに身を隠して用を足しているのです が、乾期には雑草は伸びていないので身を隠すすべがな いのです。特に初潮を迎えた児童は学校から遠ざかって しまいます。乾期に出席している高学年の女子児童にト イレがないから学校に来て困らないかと尋ねると、 「 大丈 夫、家に帰るまでずっと我慢してるから！」 と言いました。本当に朝から約５〜6時間 もトイレに行かないで過ごせるのか、非常 に心配になりました。 日本の民間からの資金で、10万円で 8か所の学校にそれぞれ屋根つきの水 洗トイレ2つを作りました。約70ガロン の水を貯めるタンクを備え、使用後はそ こから柄杓で水を汲んで流す、 という単 純な作りです。 タンク用の水を汲む井戸がない学 校では、雨水を校舎の屋根から樋でタンクに流し 込む作りにしました。 また、雨期の雨水を貯めてお くため、直径4フィートのコンクリートリングを3つ 重ねたシリンダー状の貯水槽を作り、そこからタ ンクに流れ込む構造にした学校もあります。
後日訪問した際、 「女子児童がみんな学校を欠席しなくな りました」 と笑みを浮かべて校長先生が話してくれました。 竹筒を手に提げて校庭を歩く数人の女の子たちが私のもと に駆け寄り、 うれしそうに言いました。 「もう学校でお水飲ん でも心配ないのよ。 だって学校でトイレに行けるから」。小さ なトイレひとつが、女の子たちの人生を大きく変えるきっか けになったのでした。
