Based on a nurturing environment where a child can live freely in the world, we are bilingual Japanese/English Kindergarten. On top of language acquisition, we offer kids the opportunity learn about cultures from different countries and different ways of thinking, but at the same time helping those kids develop their individuality and identity. In our curriculum, there are different activities that teach about the cultures of Japan, China, United States, Mexico and other countries. In autumn, we have an event called “Stone Soup Day”. It’s where children can experience Thanksgiving in America and the Harvest Festival in Japan. For this event, we invite senior citizens from senior citizens homes to this event so that children can interact with people from different generations. Daily reports and conversations about the students are sent to parents via e-mail. At Ricca Children’s Learning Center, we create an environment where children wholeheartedly play with their friends, build and foster character, satisfy their curiosity, and engage themselves in voluntary learning. In monthly cooking classes, children will have the hands-on opportunity to work with different styles of cooking. By using the five senses, children learn through experience to acquire and master creative and thinking abilities, while at the same time having fun. Children will also have the chance to actively learn about aspects of Japanese cuisine, such as “udon” and “white mochi balls”, and deepen their understanding of Japanese food culture. On top of this, activities to further study the traditions and culture of Japan will be offered. Among these activities, the restaurant experience at “Ricca’s Restaurant” and the summer time “Haunted House” are popular with many kindergarteners and parents. The program is generally held in Japanese, but sports such as soccer, gymnastics, and other extracurricular activities are held in English. Using the Montessori method of teaching, we offer day car and after school care. Our teaching method allows children the freedom to learn what they want. (Freedom within limits.) Our teachers help our children by putting together an environment where can forces on their work. Our teachers also try to focus on the needs and passions of each child and overall, make the learning experience that much more fun. Starting in April, our daycare program at our newly renovated nursery, will open from 8AM - 5:30PM from Monday through Friday. Our flexible-scheduling program is also available (Extra fees apply.) For children over the age of 4, our after school care is especially popular. Together with friends, they can learn math and hiragana. Working together, they also support each other here. The best feature of the Montessori educational method is making use of work tools to help in the development of originality. The children become hooked on activities that engage the five senses. We offer many activities that help our students become closer with Japanese culture. Also, our classes create an “at home” atmosphere because they comprise of small groups of 12 students or less. Day by day, we work closely with parents, making sure we don’t miss any of the signs that kids show as they grow.

A new teacher has been hired this year. (Left picture) Ms. Shiohama was a kindergarden teacher, and Ms. Wakabayashi at a junior high, both in Japan. Ms. Miyagi has graduated from South California graduate school, and is very familiar with American education. These three experienced teachers will bring in new influence to the traditional Saniku school, developing the school into a lively place with motivated students. The relationship between students and parents are very close, and to enjoy all the after-school activities such as sports day and ski trips is the Saniku style. Because of its homelike atmosphere, it is a place where graduated students come back to visit.

We have opportunities to experience 1 day class to see the diversity of students with different ages learning together. Younger students are stimulated by learning with older children, while older students take care of the younger students... the children’s peer consciousness elevates, and can focus better on their study. At the end of the year, students of pre-classes present their study results of the year such as their introduction and sing chorus of nursery rhymes to present to the parents.

今年から新任教諭が着任。(写真左より)塩浜先生は日本の保育園、若林先生は日本の中学校で指導されていました。宮城先生は南カリフォルニア大学大学院を卒業、アメリカの教育に精通しています。経験豊富な3人が伝統ある三育に新鮮な風を吹き込み、子どもたちのやる気に満ちた、活気あふれる学校へとさらに進化しています。生徒同士、そして保護者同士の関係も密接で、運動会やスキー旅行などの課外活動なども、みんなが一体となって楽しむのが三育流。こんなアットホームな校風ゆえに、卒業生や日本へ帰国した子どもたちが大人になっても集う場にもなっています。

幅広い年齢の生徒が学んでいる利点を生かし、違う年齢のクラスを1日体験する機会を設けています。年上の子と学ぶことで刺激を受けたり、年下の子の面倒をみることを覚えたり…どの子どもたちも仲間意識が高くなり、より学習に集中できるようになります。年度末には、プリクラスの生徒による初めての自己紹介、全員で行うわらべ歌の合唱など、1年の学習成果を保護者の方に向けて発表する会があります。

The characteristics of this school is the classes are twice a week (once a week for junior high) from kindergarden to junior high school, so the students can spend time with their families on the weekends. The texts are designated from the Japanese Ministry of Education, and is a supplementary school where students can opt subjects from Japanese, mathematics, science, and social studies. Saniku develops polite and friendly classes from our experienced teachers, to balance out the “Intellectual education”, “moral education”, and “physical education”, a motto that this school upholds. Instead of the teachers pushing children to learn, we develop the student’s desire to learn from themselves; we bring out the ability of each individual, and educate the students to motivate themselves to learn. We especially put effort into Japanese and social studies, in order to aim for students to elevate their communication skills. At kindergarden, a new curriculum is introduced from April, fulfilling the education to gain strong language skills in a enjoyable environment. There are homework tutors at elementary school, to complete homework within the same day. Saniku Tozai Gakuin have fun after-school activities such as tone charm music club and calligraphy club. We focus on nurturing the heart and mind of the students, and through story-telling and bible talk once a week at the chapel, we anticipate helping children to nurture their kind heart, and become a emotionally stable person. 幼稚部から中学部まで、平日週2回(中学部は週1回)の保育・授業を行なっているので、週末は家族との交わりに専念できるのが大きな特徴。文部科学省から支給される教科書を用い、国語、算数、理科、社会などを学べる補習授業校です。三育が掲げる”知育＝頭脳”、”徳育＝心”、”体育＝体”の3要素がバランスよく成長できるよう、経験豊かな専属教師陣による親切丁寧な授業を展開。教師による詰め込みではなく、子どもたち自らのやる気を育み、個々が持っている能力を引き出し、学習意欲が高まるような教育を実践しています。特に国語力、社会力の強化に力を入れ、コミュニケーション能力の高い子を目指します。幼稚部では、4月新学期から新カリキュラムを導入、楽しい雰囲気の中で強い国語力を養えるよう保育内容を充実。小学部では放課後の宿題アシストもあり、その日のうちに宿題を終わらせることができます。放課後は、三育東西学園ならではのトーンチャイム音楽クラブや習字クラブなどで楽しい活動も。心の教育を重視し、月1度チャペルでのお話やクラスでの聖書のお話などを通して、思いやりのある心の優しい情緒安定した子どもの育成を行なっています。

After regular classes, students can take part in different activities such as making white mochi balls. Using their Japanese, students have a hands-on experience with Japanese culture while at the same time making memories with friends. Spring and Fall events include food fundraisers where parents and students sell Japanese curry, teriyaki chicken, and cookies. Sales go towards funds for graduation trips. These experiences, however, are about more than just making money. They are also opportunities for students to build character in their endeavors. Summer School starts on July 1th. On top of Japanese classes, English classes for school entrance preparation, Tanabata arts and crafts, radio calisthenics, watermelon carving, field trips, and many other summer activities are offered. We strive to develop and offer a truly bilingual education based on the highest state and national Japanese language education standards. We hope to foster students that can participate in American society as proud Japanese Americans. Being in a bilingual Japanese and English environment, sometimes students begin to lose the “writing” and “reading” aspects of Japanese language. To avoid this, our students continue their Japanese language education from kindergarten through the age of 18 or when they graduate high school. In addition to the standard curriculum covering “conversation”, “reading”, and “writing”, there are other activities to further enhance Japanese language learning, including speech contests, academic presentations, qualification examination preparatory classes, and more. Outside of class, students participate in Japanese cultural events, like mochi pounding. They have fall and spring fund raising sales for graduation trip. ith the aim of making the very best ramen, this ramen shop was named Zetton, after the strongest monster defeated by Ultraman. Here, the original chef’s delicately flavored ramen is sure to please everybody! Even just by the sign that says “Tsukemen”, you will be moved. You will certainly marvel at the vegetarian ramen, and possibly even faint at their “Special Char Siu” ramen. Zetton really just goes above and beyond.

During the 14 years civil war, many children were forced to go to war as child soldiers in the Republic of Liberia. They still suffer from the war.

14年間の内戦中、子どもたちが兵士として戦いを強いられたアフリカのリベリア共和国。その傷跡は、今も子どもたちを苦しめています。

THE CHILD SOLDIERS of LIBERIA

iberia has been ravaged by the massacres and destruction of two civil wars. In the midst of this brutal strife, child soldiers created by adults became a crisis. Boys and girls, aged 8-13, were taken captive, forced to carry weapons, and forced onto the battlefield. Other children were forced to labor in the diamond mines, and those that attempted to escape were captured, and had their arms and legs cut off...Under conditions like these, going to school was like the dream of a dream. After the civil wars ended, nearly 790,000 people, including children, became refugees at various camps scattered throughout the country. In order to let them return to their hometowns, ensuring domestic stability and adequate infrastructure first was vital. To that end, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested international aid groups like our own to come in and help build schools, wells, and the like. I myself travelled to Nimba County with United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) to survey planned sites for well and school construction. Once, I entered a small market to buy provisions. When I was paying at the register, a boy of about 10 called out to me from the other side of the counter. He wanted money in exchange for taking the things I had bought out to my taxi. I had been bagging the supplies when the boy caught my attention, and when I turned to look, I froze. The boy had an innocent face, but the arms that poked out of his sleeves were stumps that ended at the elbows. In all likelihood, he was one of the children who had their limbs cut off after being forced to serve as child soldiers in the civil war. I was too shocked to speak, but simply watched as the boy skillfully carried my goods out to the taxi with his shortened limbs. When I handed the boy several bills, he sandwiched them with his handless limbs and said “thank you,” but the sadness and darkness were clear to see in his face. Even now, 10 years later, that boy’s face is burned in my memory, never to fade.

つの内戦で殺戮や破壊を繰り返したリベリア。この暴虐極まる戦いで、大人によって作られた少年兵、少女兵が大きな問題となりました。8～13歳の男女の子どもが拉致され、無理矢理に武器を持たされ、戦場に駆り出されたのです。ダイヤモンド採掘場で労働を強制された子もおり、そこから逃げようとすると捕まえられ、腕や足を斧で切り落とされる…。こんな状況下では、学校へ行くなど夢のまた夢でした。内戦終了後も、子どもたちを含め79万人に及んだ国内外の避難民が各地の難民キャンプに留まっていました。彼らが故郷に帰還するためには国内の安全とインフラ整備が不可欠でしたので、外務省からの依頼で、私たち国際支援団体が学校や井戸を建設するために現地入りしたのです。私自身はまず、国連平和維持軍(PKO)のエスコートでニンバ郡の村々に井戸と学校を建設する予定地の調査に赴きました。そこで小さな祖末なマーケットに食料を買い求めに入ったときのことです。レジで支払いをしていたとき、カウンターの向こう側にいる10歳くらいの少年から声をかけられました。私が買ったものをタクシーまで運ぶから手間賃をもらいたいということでした。食料を袋に詰めながら少年に目を向けた私は、一瞬凍りつきました。少年はとてもあどけない顔だったのですが、そのTシャツの袖から出ていたのは、肘から下がない腕でした。おそらく彼は、少年兵として内戦に駆り出されたあと、腕を切り落とされた子どものひとりなのでしょう。あまりのショックで言葉も出ない私は、短い腕で、でも巧みに袋を抱え上げてタクシーに運ぶ少年を見守りました。数枚のドル札を手渡すと、元少年兵は手のついていない２本の棒腕で札を鋏み持って「サンキュー」と言ったのですが、その顔はあまりにも悲しく、暗い陰に包まれていました。 10年過ぎた今も、この少年の顔が私の脳裏に焼き付いて消えません。
