There are many delicious Western pastry shops, but when it comes to Japanese sweets, this store is the best! The beautifully decorated sweets are great for gifts as well, but I personally prefer this MameDaifuku (bean mochi). With the comforting flavor of the bean jamfilled mochi, it brings back the memories of Japan. The popular sweets often sell out by afternoon, so make sure to go early!

A gift that I’m happy to receive and love to give, is this short cake wrapped in mochi. This unique combination is a bit surprising for us Japanese, but it’s very delicious.

The thin layer of mochi is very soft, and the short cake is silky. The moderate sweetness makes it addictive!

おいしい洋菓子屋は数あれど、和菓子はこのお店が一番！ 美しく装飾され たものも手みやげには最適ですが、個人的におすすめしたいのは豆大福。 あん こがつまった素朴な味に、日本を思い出して懐かしくなります。人気の和菓子 は夕方には売り切れてしまうことが多いので、 買いに行くなら早めの時間に！

The mini-size makes it convenient to carry even while you talk, so it’s perfect to take to the office. It’s also great for men who are into sweets. お店がミツワの中で買いやすいこともあり、 よくモチクリームを手みやげにし ています。ほうじ茶や紅芋など和風なものを始め、 いろいろな種類の味があり、 話をしながらつまむにはちょうどいいミニサイズなので、会社などに持って行く のにちょうどいい。 男性でも甘いものが好きな人は意外に多いので喜ばれます。

I favor Japanese sweets myself, but often choose Western sweets for gifts. My classic is the cake from Bosco Bakery, which I learned of from my Koreatown store’s staff. It’s tasty, looks cute, and is just the right size for the ladies. The Bouchon macarons are also a hit. 和菓子党の私も、 手みやげには洋菓子を選ぶことが多いですね。 定番は、 うちのKorea Town店のスタッフに教えてもらったBosco Bakery Cafeの ケーキ。 おいしくて、 見た目がかわいくて、 程よい小ささで、 特に女性にとても 喜ばれます。 Bouchonのマカロンも、 まさにマカロンカラーでおすすめです。

For eating out, I recommend the vegetarian-oriented restaurant “ELF,” in Echo Park. For vintage clothing, I recommend “THE LOVED ONE,” in Pasadena.

The nomadic Mongolian people. Their children travel upwards of 20km by horse to attend school, all the while helping their parents and caring for livestock at home, living in harmony with nature.

遊牧民族が多いモンゴル。子どもたちは、20km先の学校まで馬で通ったり、 父親と家畜の世話をしたりと、雄大な自然とともに生きています。

Mongolians - Living with Nature

I

visited Mongolia to help construct a replacement for a worn-out elementary school. The site was located in Uvs province, 3 days west of the national capital of Ulan Bator by car. It was a small town south of Russia and east of the border with Kazakhstan.

The designated construction site was in the middle of a large prairie with only 2 or 3 of the tent residences called yurts in sight. All construction work, including transport of sand, gravel, and water from the nearby river, and making cement blocks, was done manually by local youths who had been gathered. 14 college volunteers from Japan participated as well, making it an impromptu site for international exchange.

The average literacy rate in Mongolia is extremely high at 97.5%, and this is one of the rare countries where more girls (76%) than boys (64%) attend school. For boys, mastering horseback riding, as well the work necessary to survive in the harsh prairie environment, take precedence over going to school. Parents commonly start taking their boys to assist with herding duties at around age 10. Living together with goats, sheep, yaks, horses, and other livestock - subsisting on these animals for food, while simultaneously raising their offspring - this is the kind of life that these children lead, learning the skills necessary for daily life. Since school is often far away, attendance often becomes a problem. For the elementary school described earlier, the nearest students live 2km away, while the farthest ones live 20km away, commuting from the prairies on horseback. Depending on the weather, there were times when they weren’t able to go home, as well.

It would be unimaginable in America or Japan, but this is a society without televisions, personal computers, or game consoles. Mongolian children roam the prairies under the endless azure sky by day, and count the stars in the shining sky by night, living life in harmony with Mother Nature. Full of curiosity, the Japanese youths soon joined them in laughter and play. Even now, I cannot forget their pure, shining eyes.

ンゴルを訪れた目的は、老朽化した小学校を新 たに建設し直すことでした。場所は、首都ウラ ンバートルから西へ計3日間、車を走らせた先にある ウヴス県ズウントゥルン。北はロシア、西はカザフスタ ンとの国境に位置する小さな集落です。建設予定地 は、”ゲル”と呼ばれる小さなテントの家が2、3個見え るだけの、大草原のど真ん中です。近くの小川から砂 や砂利、水などを運ぶ作業、セメントブロックを作る 作業など、地元の青年たちの協力を募り、すべて手作 業で建設しました。日本からも大学生14名のボラン ティアが参加し、国際交流の場にもなりました。 モンゴルの平均識字率は97.5％ととても高く、修学 率は女性(76％)が男性(64％)を上回るめずらしい国 です。男子は学校に通うことより、馬に乗り、 大草原の厳しい環境で生きて行く業を身に つけることが重んじられるので、10歳ごろか ら父親を助けて遊牧の仕事に携わります。 ヤ ギ、羊、 ヤク、馬などの家畜とともに暮らし、 そ こから食物を得、 さらに彼らの子どもを育て て生活に役立てる、 そんな生命の繰り返しを 体験しながら、生活に必要な多くのことを学 んでいるのです。家と学校が離れているため、 通学が困難になることもあります。前述の小 学校でも子どもたちは近くて2km、遠くは20km先の 草原から馬で通っていたので、天候によっては帰宅で きない場合もあるとのことでした。 アメリカや日本では考えられませんが、 ここはテレビも パソコンもゲーム機器もない社会です。 子どもたちは昼は 底抜けに深い青空の下で草原を駆け巡り、 夜は満天の星 空の下で星を数える、 というように大自然の中に遊びを 見出しています。 好奇心が旺盛で、 初めて接する日本人の 青年たちとも、 いっしょになって笑って遊んでいました。 純 粋で、 輝いていた彼らの目は未だに忘れられません。

It is a important system that cools the engine.

The role of the radiator is to adjust the engine temperature when the car is running, preventing it from overheating. The radiator is a system which uses coolant (or cooling water), and it always comes with a reserve tank. In many cases, the radiator malfunctions because the coolant is leaking.
