Experience Working in Japan
D
uring Jun’s third year in college, he studied abroad in Japan for one year at Hitotsubashi University. He returned to UCSB to complete his final year and after graduation, he decided to go back to Japan to work. He was hired by the JET program as a Coordinator for International Relations in a small town called Uchinada, in Ishikawa Prefecture. Bilingual speakers are commonly assigned to rural cities because of the lack of English speakers in those areas. He began working at the town hall in Uchinada. He was faced with many challenges his first year, but decided to extend his contract another year. He was mainly in charge of organizing and promoting international/cultural awareness events for the city (Including free English classes). He also wrote for the town magazine once a month. His articles focused on his experience as a foreigner, and provided the citizens with a new perspective. He wrote the articles in Japanese and sent me the rough drafts to get them proofread. It was after a few months, that I began noticing he no longer needed his articles edited. The experiences he gained in his 2 years at Uchinada was invaluable. That stay taught him things he would never would have been able to learn here in Los Angeles. The cultural understanding and the mind set Japanese people have toward work and relationships hasinfluenced him greatly. Jun is currently in charge of BYB English School (Irvine branch), taking care of many Japanese students. At times my husband Bill will say that “Jun is 100% Japanese,” not only because of his fluency, but because of his attitude, mindset, and the way he builds relationships with his clients. Bill is very proud that Jun has become fluent in both languages to the point where he can apply his skills to the real world. In retrospect, it has been a long journey to get to where we are today. As parents, we have done everything we can to provide our kids with a bilingual education. What I came to realize over time is that in the end, it is up to the kids to decide whether or not they want to further pursue the language. It is not unusual now for kids to learn multiple languages. It is essential not only for parents but also for kids to continue to show interest and continue their studies. As parents, you can provide your child with an exceptional educational environment. In the end, this will become a lifelong “treasure” that no one can take away. How the kids want to use their education is up to them. As parents, Bill and I can’t be any happier and prouder for what we have done. We believe that Jun will continue to make a difference, utilizing his bilingual knowledge. This will conclude the series “The Senesac Family and the Bilingual Kids.” It has been exactly one year since we started and I hope it has provided readers with a little insight into bilingual education. は、UCSBに在学中に1年間、 日本の大学(一ツ橋大学)で 勉強し、卒業後に再び国際交流員として日本に行くことに なりました。石川県の内灘町に赴任し、市役所で日本人スタッフ とともに2年間仕事をさせていただきました。彼が日本語も堪能 だったことから、大都市ではなく英語が話せる人たちがほとんど いない田舎町「内灘」 に行くことになったようです。戸惑うことも 多々あったと思いますが、1年契約だったのを本人が希望して1 年延長しました。 その間、地元の方々との交流をスムーズにする ために無料で英語クラスを開くなど、多くのプランを実行してい ました。 その中でも、市役所の広報誌に毎月連載していた 「Say What」 は、 最初の頃こそ必ず私に原稿を送ってきて文面のチェッ クを頼んでいましたが、気がつくと本人も自信がついたのかその 必要もなくなっていました。石川県での2年間の生活は、 アメリカ では決して知り得ない、数多くのことを学べる機会に恵まれたよ い期間だったように思います。特に日本人の家族や仕事に対する 考え方などはとてもインパクトが大きかったようで、 日本文化への 理解がより一層深まったと思います。 ご存知のように、現在淳はBYBアーバイン校の責任者として多 くの日本人の生徒さんたちに英語を教えながらがんばっていま す。父親のビルは時々 「淳はアメリカ人じゃない、100％日本人だ」 と言い切るほど言葉だけでなく、考え方、人との接し方、 習慣、 す べてがアメリカ人よりは日本人に近くなってます。父親として、 ここ まで完璧に日本語、英語を上手く使い分け、 ビジネスにも通用す るバイリンガルになってくれたことがとてもうれしいようです。 こうして振り返ってみると長い道のりでしたが、最終的には淳 が日本語に興味を持って自分の意思でここまでやってきたことが バイリンガルという形で実を結んだように思います。 ただ、種をま き、 どの程度まで伸ばしていくのかは親と子どもの共同作業です。 すばらしい教育を受けられる環境を与えること----これを親が与 えられれば、子どもにとって誰にも奪われることのない一生の宝 になります。 そして、与えられた教育をどう生かすかは、本人次第 です。私もビルも、 できるだけのことはやってきたという満足感が あります。今後も淳は、バイリンガルとして大きな成果を見せてく れることと信じています。今月で最終回になりますが、少しでも多 くの親御さんたちの参考にしていただけたらうれしいです。1年間 ありがとうございました。

If you have to print them out, the advertising space is just a waste, so after the coupon is done printing, stop your printer! Also, having a calendar for coupons is convenient. If you write the name of the product, store, and discount amount on the last day, you’ll be able to better remember to use your coupons. 3) For a practical use for old ink cartridges: Websites such as inkrecycling.org and ecyclegroup.com will provide free shipping for used printer ink cartridges. Staples and Office depot will also give you a $2 credit for each used cartridge you bring in! 4) Using eco bags: A must for accumulating points! AT CVS you can get a tag for $1 to attach to your bag that will give you a $1 credit every four times you use it. 5) To save on utilities: Set a target amount, and then calculate if you managed to beat that amount every month. Save the extra money, and at the end of the year use it on food or gifts and you’ll think “I’m glad I saved! I’ll try hard again next time!” If you tell your family, they’ll be sure to help in saving electricity and water! As you can see, there’s lots of ways to save money on a daily basis! A few little changes here and there can add up to a big difference. Enjoy saving, and use your money effectively. It’s been a fun year!
