YOUR FEEDBACK SEER SURVEY Each summer we survey our parents to elicit feedback and determine what we are doing well and what areas we can improve. This survey provides us with extremely valuable data about the quality of our day camp program, allowing us to take your family’s camp experience above and beyond.

LAST YEAR, PARENTS SAID... SAFE & SECURE

Our camp program is a safe and secure environment for kids and teens.

INTEREST

Our vast number of specialty camps allow youth to pursue an interest they are passionate about.

IMPACT

Campers are making friends and feeling a sense of belonging. We will continue to build upon the success of last summer!

GIVING BACK

We improved upon providing children with opportunities to give back and support our community. This summer, we will provide even more ways that campers can volunteer to help others.

OUR FOCUS THIS SUMMER

+

We’ll be working on ways that we can better communicate

COMMUNICATION to parents about all of the fun that is happening at camp each day!

FUN FACTOR

We’ve challenged our staff to implement more silly, fun and wacky ideas to keep our campers guessing and laughing all summer long.

IMPACT

We’ll continue to focus on helping campers make friends, create a sense of belonging and achieve their goals, all while nurturing character development and being physically active.

FEEDBACK

We want to elicit as much feedback as possible from parents, campers and staff. Look out for weekly opportunities to share your thoughts on how we serve your family in our program.

Vetted: We complete reference checks and extensive background checks on each of our camp staff.

Committed: Staff possess extraordinary skills in working with children and a deep sense of commitment to the development of each camper.

Peace of Mind You can have peace of mind when you enroll your children in day camps at Mottino Family YMCA. ASKED ??? FREQUENTLY ??? QUESTIONS Parent Handbook

Please read the Parent Handbook prior to sending your child to camp. This short survival guide can be accessed online at mottino.ymca.org or picked-up at the YMCA’s Welcome Center. It should help answer any questions you have about camp.

Is camp a good fit for my child?

If your little one is at least 5 years old, potty trained and can follow directions within camp ratios, then camp is a wonderful place for your child to gain new experiences and make new friends. If you have questions about the fit of a specific camp, please feel free to contact the YMCA, and we can walk you through your concerns.

Where do I drop off my child?

Please be sure you are dropping your child off at the correct location by checking your receipts or calling the YMCA if you have any questions. Joe & Mary Mottino Family YMCA at 4701 Mesa Dr. Oceanside, CA 92056: Camp operates out of our large side lawn to the right of the main entrance. Ivey Ranch Elementary School at 4275 Via Rancho Road, Oceanside, CA 92057: Camp operates out of the YMCA modular located at the back of the campus on Mesa Drive.

What are the camp hours?

Camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. We offer free extended care from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. where children will participate in low impact traditional camp activities supervised by counselors who may be different than those they have been with throughout the camp day. A late fee of $1 per minute per child will be assessed for children picked up after 6:00 PM.

Do I need to sign my child in and out daily?

The YMCA requires that all children are to be properly signed in by an adult and turned over to a YMCA staff person. This helps ensure the safety of your child. We do require children to be signed out by an authorized adult, even if they are participating in other YMCA programs immediately following camp. Please note: It is our responsibility to see that your child leaves with the appropriate person each day. We will ask for photo identification daily. Please do not be offended. This is done with the child’s safety in mind. When filling out your paperwork, make certain that the names of the authorized adults are the same as they appear on their photo IDs. If you are going to be late, please call the YMCA immediately.

Who are the camp staff?

We feel confident that we have the best staff around! They are as diverse as our campers and have undergone at least 24 hours of training in everything from risk management, positive disciplinary techniques to how to teach and much more. All camp staff members have background checks and are first aid and CPR certified. Additionally, references have been checked on each staff member.

10

JOE & MARY MOTTINO FAMILY YMCA • 760-758-0808 • mottino.ymca.org

How many staff will be watching my camper?

We operate on the following ratios, which are recommended by the American Camp Association. Age 5 years 6-7 years 8-12 years 13-16 years

Ratio 1:6 1:8 1:10 1:12

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

All campers must bring their own lunch, a small snack and drink to camp daily. The YMCA will provide an additional afternoon snack. Please send only non-perishable foods because refrigeration is not possible. Campers should also bring a labeled water bottle, sunscreen, swim suit, towel, and a sweatshirt for campers who may get cold. Campers should wear closed toed shoes, as we are very active, and clothes in which they are ready to play hard and get dirty. Campers should not bring toys and card games, video games, personal cd players/stereos/iPods, expensive jewelry/watches, money, alcohol or drugs, vehicles, animals, weapons, or cell phones. The YMCA is not responsible for any items that are lost or stolen and under no circumstance will reimburse for lost items.

What if my camper needs to take medication during camp?

In order for your camp’s Unit Leader to administer medication during the day, your doctor-prescribed medication must be checked in at our camp information center. No over the counter medication will be administered. You will need to complete the YMCA Medication Release form each Monday in order for our staff to administer medication.

What will my camper be doing everyday at camp?

For each week of camp, a schedule will be available online one week before the camp starts at our website, mottino.ymca.org. The schedules will give you an inside look at where your camper is going and what activities they will be doing throughout the day. Schedules are subject to change. More information or updates, please visit or call the Welcome Center at 760-758-0808.

How will my camper be transported to and from field trips?

The YMCA transports our campers on school buses routinely inspected by the California Highway Patrol. Due to the nature of the routes and multiple stops we’re making daily, our buses fall under the rules for transport vehicles that require that children must be 6 years old to ride on the bus under California Vehicle Code. A set of our bus rules are available for your review in our Parent Handbook. Our bus drivers are CPR and First Aid certified and have completed a background check and drug/ alcohol test. Though we try to keep a consistent schedule and accomplish all of our planned activities, departure and arrival times, as well as field trips, are subject to change without notice.

What if my camper needs special assistance/inclusion aide? Joe & Mary Mottino Family YMCA tries to accommodate all campers into our programs. Accommodations for your child will depend on availability, what camps are best suited for your child, your child’s needs and the Y’s resources.

Due to high demand and our commitment to serving as many campers as possible, the number of weeks for one-on-one assistance per camper are limited. An inclusion intake form must be submitted to the camp department prior to registration. Evaluation of registration may take up to two weeks to process. Inclusion intake forms are available at the Welcome Center or online. Our inclusion program is made possible by generous donations to our Annual Campaign.

What are the camp spirit themes? Week 1: Get in the Sports Zone Week 2: Color Wars Week 3: Wild Water Week Week 4: Let’s Go Back in Time Week 5: Red, White and Blue Week 6: Campers Choice Week 7: Around the World Week 8: Be a Superhero Day Week 9: Twin Day Week 10: Let the Animal Out

LITs (Leaders In Training) Within this program, teens learn leadership, group management skills, child development basics, and policies and procedures in relation to working with youth. Interacting with campers and representing the Y requires a certain level of professionalism and maturity. For this reason, the fieldwork program is selective. Upon completion of the LIT course, teens will be invited to participate in the fieldwork program. LITs are required to follow the same dress code and expectations as our camp staff; these expectations will be detailed during the training course. LITs may also receive a letter demonstrating their hours of community service for each week of fieldwork they complete!

Additionally, LITs will also develop and implement a community service project during the week.

The fieldwork program is an opportunity for the LITs to use their leadership skills in the field of camp and enjoy rewards of working with the Y’s incredible staff team. LITs will experience various camp programs, assist in the daily operations of camp and receive valuable on-the-job experience that will help build a strong foundation for either a recreational or childcare career. Specific camp placements depend on LIT skill sets and camp availability. LITs MUST complete the training course before registering for the fieldwork program.

Parental Involvement: We encourage parents to take time after class to talk positively about your child’s experience. Practice during family or swim time helps to reinforce skills learned during lessons. Parents watching swim lessons from the pool deck will help promote the child’s independence and will allow them to focus on the task at hand. Evaluations are available on the last day of class. Staff/Participant Ratios The following are ratios implemented for YMCA swim lessons: Parent-Child Lessons 1:12 Minnows 1:6 Preschool Lessons 1:5 Fish 1:10 Polliwogs & Guppies 1:6 Adult Lessons 1:12 Helpful Parent Tips: • Do not feed your child for at least 30 minutes prior to their swim lesson. This will help prevent cramping and sickness during lessons. • Goggles are not a requirement unless they are at the level of stroke work and swimming at distances further than 10 feet at a time. If your child is more comfortable with goggles in the water, we recommend goggles without the nose piece to ensure child will learn appropriate breathing techniques. • Hair should be pulled back and away from the face. • Wet suits and rash guards can be beneficial for children that tend to get cold. We keep our pool heated to 82 degrees year-round.
