HALF TERM FUN • PARTY IDEAS • LOCAL NEWS • EDUCATION

Hello Readers, Welcome to our first issue of 2024! We hope you’ve had a good start to the New Year and your children have re-settled into daily school life. Winter is now upon us, offering up its bare trees and frosty weather, but that’s no reason to hunker down at home all season! Instead of waiting for the warmer weather to return, pull on your winter woollies and take advantage of the change of season by creating a list of cold-weather activities and fun things to do. Kids (and parents) will benefit from a fun and active half term break, so we’ve featured some fabulous places and family entertainment throughout this issue. Don’t worry – lots of options are undercover so you can have a brilliant time and dodge the wind and rain if needed! We’ve also included some party planning ideas – children’s birthdays come around fast and there’s always lots to organise, so why not enlist the help of some tried and tested party specialists? They will take care of the entertainment so you can have some fun too! We’ll be back again in March, when the warmer days are on the horizon, with lots of exciting Easter news and local events for your calendars. Until then, we wish you all a very happy half term break with your families.

A WARM WELCOME AWAITS AT READING BLUE COAT SCHOOL

Founded in 1646, Reading Blue Coat is a school steeped in history, but with its eye very much focused on the future. With their values of aspiration, compassion, courage, integrity and service underpinning all that they do, their aim is for excellence in everything, for everyone; for the whole community to thrive because they are engaged in what they do, and kind in how they do it. They are delighted to have extended the long-established co-education of the Sixth Form into Year 7, and look forward to being fully co-educational in all year groups by 2027 with all the diversity of thought and talent it will bring to this already vibrant environment. They warmly invite you to the whole school Open Morning on Saturday 11th May. A FIRST CLASS EDUCATION AT ELSTREE SCHOOL

Elstree takes great pride in offering a first-class education combined with outstanding co-curricular and sporting opportunities. With 150 acres, there is no shortage of space for an array of pitches for competitive matches, honing bushcraft skills or learning to paddleboard. They also delight in being able to invite others to enjoy their beautiful grounds.

Limited spaces for Year 5 in 2024 - begin the senior school journey at Holme Grange, where academic excellence is paramount. The vibrant environment fosters thriving students, aided by a dedicated staff for an enjoyable and memorable experience. Individual attention is a priority, understanding each pupil’s motivations for encouragement. Challenges across the curriculum spark curiosity, and personal development programs emphasise well-being and life skills. Leadership opportunities increase as pupils progress, encompassing in-class roles to whole-school responsibilities. Holme Grange represents more than a school; it symbolises a commitment to academic excellence, with the aim to give pupils an inspiring and purposeful experience, being well equipped for the future. Secure your limited space for an inspiring Year 5 in 2024, where education meets with excellence at Holme Grange. W: www.holmegrange.org

WHY CHOOSE AN INDEPENDENT EDUCATION?

“There are so many practical benefits for busy working families who are juggling school runs with mealtimes, then transporting their children to the next music/drama lesson/sports club/DofE session. Independent schools usually offer a longer day which is filled with a range of co-curricular activities, alongside academic learning. It’s generally acknowledged that independent schools offer a far greater range of non-academic activities such as rowing, horse riding and yoga, alongside opportunities to further your child’s education with trips and overseas travel. Class sizes are usually much smaller, which means pupils receive closer attention from the teachers. If your child has a particular interest in certain subjects or areas such as sport, music, drama or art, they can find support and the stretch they need to reach their full potential, and the resources needed to nurture such talent.” Samantha Greenwood, Senior Deputy Head, Pangbourne College. W: www.pangbourne.com

Towards the end of 2023, they hosted a Cross-Country Relay for local Primary Schools Woolhampton, Bucklebury, Brimpton, Hermitage, Hampstead Norreys, Bradfield, and Englefield. They also look forward to welcoming children from local charity PALS to join their Year 7 pupils, explore the grounds and enjoy an afternoon of arts and crafts. Another favourite is the Independent and Primary Schools’ Football Festivals both hives of competitive spirit and fun energy. If you would like to see more of what Elstree has to offer, please join their next Open Morning on Saturday 2nd March from 10am-12noon. To book your space, please get in touch. TACKLING STIGMA

Crosfields School has welcomed its first Mental Health Practitioner. The best way to combat the pressures of the modern world is to learn how to develop skills that will allow us to cope with these pressures. Crosfields has welcomed Mrs Yadava, its first Mental Health Practitioner (MHP), to support pupils with their wellbeing and to further develop wellbeing services at the school. Schoolbased mental health support can have a significant positive impact on pupils and supporting this is vital in helping each individual to thrive. Mrs Yadava works primarily with pupils on a one-to-one basis in a designated space within the medical centre, helping them to understand their emotions and feelings. She helps pupils develop coping skills that will enable them to deal with any situations in a healthy way. Teachers and parents are also supported and guided through this to ensure a 360 degree approach. Group sessions are held daily where all pupils have a chance to explore topics such as the ‘healthy use of social media’ or ‘positive relationships’. This pro-active approach arms Crosfields’ pupils with the emotional confidence to tackle what may lie ahead. Read more on their website. W: www.crosfields.com/news/supportingmentalhealth

Ed Venables, the new Head of Eagle House School has the following to say on the current education landscape: “Has there been a time in history when the future for young children is more uncertain? The ironic thing, however, is that, as the pace of technological change increases, the importance of the teaching of character and human relationship skills becomes more important. Yes, our pupils need to be able to learn to work with and manipulate AI, but the jobs of the future will go to those who are able to form trusting relationships with any other human and to those who can think in a creative and proactive manner. So, please, let’s not ever undervalue the artistic, creative and reflective aspects of education. Let’s spend more time teaching children, directly and indirectly, about how they and other people work.” W: www.eaglehouseschool.com

MUSICAL MOMENTS for children and families

Primary Times considers the important role that music can play in everyday life Music is universal in its ability to bring people together and it’s also an important form of creative expression. World Music Therapy Day takes place on the 1st March, celebrating the healing power of music worldwide. Music therapy itself aims to support all ages with their development and wellbeing, physically, socially and emotionally.

Seeking to reduce stress and improve overall mood and self-expression, this can involve a range of activities such as singing, listening, songwriting and playing instruments. With this upcoming event in mind, Primary Times takes a closer look at some of the benefits of children learning to play a musical instrument, and at the importance of a musical education and trying to incorporate music into family life.

Music in Key Stages 1 and 2 The curriculum typically focuses on developing pupils’ creativity, hoping to ignite a passion for music that they will want to continue pursuing. Generally, children are encouraged to engage with a range of musical styles and genres, to perform and compose individually or in groups, and to have the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. Through the school years, it’s hoped that pupils can learn to appreciate and understand the history and traditions behind some great composers and pieces of music as well.

28 WINTER 2023

10 benefits of children learning to play a musical instrument Primary school children engaging in musical education and learning to play an instrument from a young age can be fantastic for a variety of reasons:

• An increase in self-confidence and self-belief as skills are developed and music-related goals and achievements are met • It can be an excellent form of stress relief and emotional connection • As a fun and hands-on activity, it can appeal to children who may otherwise struggle to stay engaged at school • Learning about musicians and music genres from around the world is an innovative way to teach history and about different cultures and traditions • It’s thought to help with concentration, memory skills and with coordination • Learning something new can teach important values such as resilience, patience, and self-discipline • Instils a sense of routine and responsibility to carefully look after their chosen instrument • Social opportunities are provided through extracurricular music clubs, lessons, or if your child decides to start their own band with their friends • Provides a creative outlet for children that might feel more comfortable expressing their emotions

through song, or composing their own music to communicate • Playing an instrument and attending musical classes or music therapy might be helpful for those who find talking-based interventions difficult

Tips for a more musical household There are lots of fabulous ways that you can get into music as a family at home and out and about more widely. Why not host a dance party or introduce family karaoke sessions now and then for fun and to bond over your favourite songs? At birthday events or get-togethers, you could start a tradition by making a family playlist for your nearest and dearest to look forward to. Go and see a show or a musical theatre performance together as an exciting family outing and to ignite your child’s interest. Have a go at a music-themed family workshop at your local library, museum or community centre to develop your skills further. If you’d like to focus on music education for your child, it’s worth looking into local music lessons or tutors near you that are experienced in teaching singing lessons and an array of musical instruments. Enrol in after-school music sessions for example or make the most of the fantastic performing arts schools and venues available that focus on these areas and the benefits that they can provide for children more widely. How will you be making musical memories as a family?

PROFESSOR ROBERT WINSTON

MCnew children’s book ‘The Story of Science’. E=exciting

2 Primary Times talks to world-renowned scientist Professor Robert Winston about his

->

When did your curiosity about the world of science begin? At around the age of three. Like most children, I was always interested to find out how things work, what’s inside the body for example and what’s up there in the sky. It’s a natural human wish to want to understand these things better. What do you most enjoy about writing books for young readers? Writing for primary school children makes you look at things with a much greater clarity about what really is important, or interesting, 2 or of value. 2

Which section of ‘The Story of Science’ do you think children find the most exciting? I test these things out beforehand by visiting schools and speaking with my own grandchildren as well. You can’t ever really predict what will interest children the most. Sometimes it’s the experiments or the things that are really surprising or dangerous!

What’s your personal favourite topic or discovery discussed in this book? The history of navigation and exploration is extraordinary. Space travel and satellites have made a massive difference to our understanding of the universe. I’ve also tried to help young people understand the ethical and really important human issues that are raised by science and technology and address that message in this book. Is ‘The Story of Science’ a book that children and families can enjoy reading together? Yes, exactly, I certainly wrote it with this in mind. I think it’s a book that adults can read with their kids and the kids can then go off and look at it further. I do also hope that the book will be sufficiently intriguing for them to refer back to later on.

Do you think it’s important to nurture this interest in science and technology in the younger generation today? It’s essential. Scientific developments and technology dominate our lives. To keep up, we have to learn and I think children do that. Encouraging children to learn about science can help them to actually understand what’s going on and then make wiser life decisions in future. Hopefully books like this might include a bit of wisdom, I think that’s important.

Known for his pioneering and remarkable work in the field of science and as an engaging television presenter and writer, Professor Lord Robert Winston’s newest book takes a look at some of humanity’s greatest discoveries and the fascinating stories behind them. With the ability to captivate all ages, ‘The Story of Science’ is aimed at children aged 7-9, focusing on inspiring the next generation of young minds. Readers can explore science and technology through history and the innovative inventions, discoveries and concepts that have shaped the world around us. As a scientific journey with captivating illustrations and imagery throughout, we asked Professor Robert Winston a few questions about the book to find out more…

Are there any future books in the works currently, or do you have any new ideas in the pipeline to look out for? I do have some ideas in my mind but I won’t say too much just yet. If I were to do another book, I would maybe aim for the GCSE age range. There’s no shortage of ideas, or topics, because science is expanding all the time! Anything which stimulates enquiry is valuable. ‘The Story of Science’ by Professor Robert Winston and illustrated by Caitlin Keegan is out now, published by DK, as part of Penguin Random House.
