AN ALTERNATIVE, NURTURING OPTION FOR CHILDREN TO GROW AND FLOURISH

Upton House School

Evergreen is an Alternative provision for children up to 11 years old. They are based at Little Muddy Me which is an ‘Outstanding’ entirely outdoor pre-school set on the edge of Bray Lake within a beautiful half acre woodland. The children who attend the outdoor provision benefit from a multi peer approach when integrating with the preschool at points throughout the day, as well as some focused/targeted sessions. Children are free to choose from a range of planned and child-led/selfdirected activities. Their remit is on emotional literacy, developing risk awareness, physical development, executive functioning skills, promoting emotional wellbeing and self-esteem. Their focus is firmly on exploring the benefits of being outdoors and working alongside children using their own interests. As an alternative provision they do not strictly follow the National Curriculum, they do however work to support the child’s individual targets using a cross curricular approach. They aim to increase cultural capital through a variety of holistic enrichment experiences, trips and hands on learning. E: muddyme@littleme-preschool.co.uk

Do you need to go to Court to formalise arrangements for your children?

As Family lawyers, this is a question we often get asked by separated parents. The short answer is no. The Court does not want to get involved in arrangements for children unless they have to - something called the “no order principle”. This means that if you and the other parent can come to an arrangement that works for you, and most importantly the children, then you do not need to inform the Court.

If you cannot reach an agreement however and wish to start Court proceedings, you will first have to attend mandatory mediation (save in exceptional circumstances) to discuss the arrangements. The mediator will ensure that your conversations remain on track, whilst guiding you both, and will not impose an agreement on you. There are also tools that may assist when discussing the arrangements such as the Cafcass parenting plan and/or using a parenting app.

Another option is solicitor-led negotiations which allow parents to have legal advice in the background as to what the Court might order without being in actual Court proceedings. Court proceedings in relation to children should be seen as a last resort and should only be issued once all other avenues are exhausted unless there are safeguarding concerns.

Newbury Building Society’s

We want to see YOUR photos!

Photography Competition is open for entries

You could win a £50 voucher of your choice* and have your picture featured in our 2024 calendar! Newbury Building Society’s resident photographer, Michael of Michael Harden Photography, shares his top tips to help you perfect your entry.

The best camera is the one you have

You don’t need the latest camera to produce amazing images! Any camera, whatever its age, will do. Get used to how it works, play around with the settings, and see how it affects your photos.

Look at the everyday in a new way

No object is boring if you’re creative enough. Get low or up high (safely) and you’ll see the world differently. A small tree can become a tower when shot at the right angle.

A picture is worth a thousand words

One of the most fun parts of photography is you can be a storyteller without ever saying a word. Look for moments of joy, the unpredictable, or even the unbelievable. The best photos always have a story behind them.

Rules? What rules?!

There are loads of books on how to take a photo (I know, I’ve read most of them!). You may hear terms like ‘composition’ or ‘aspect ratios’. These are great to know, but art is about expression, not following rules - dare to be different!

Have fun

Most importantly, have fun! The heart of everything we do in photography should be to have fun. Never stress the shots that you miss or what you could have done differently, just enjoy every second of it.

Find out more about Newbury Building Society’s Junior Photography Competition by scanning the QR code with your phone.

The closing date for entries is 3rd October 2023. Entrants must be aged 16 or under. *Photos must be taken near to one of our ten branches. *For full terms and conditions, please visit our website.

Choosing a seco ndar y sc hoo l:

more questions to ask!

Primary Times is committed to helping you make the best choice of secondary school for your child

Secondary education is almost always very different in approach to primary education and choosing a secondary school for your child is a really tough and high-pressured decision. Exam results are important but you need to know whether the school you are thinking about is a school you believe that your child can thrive in.

To a great extent the questions parents need to ask prospective secondary schools are about how well the school will meet the needs of your child. So, if your child has specific needs, even if it is about making and keeping friends, then ask the secondary school what pastoral support is in place to help develop and encourage friendships. Great secondary schools often have a head of year who follows the year group as they move through school. In our case, we know that we can email the head of year and he will follow up any concerns as the school wants the children to be happy and settled which will help them to achieve their best.

I’d also be asking about where students go on to after Y ear 11 (if the school has no sixth form). Talking to sixth form college s about how well prepared the students who come from secondary schools are, is an important consideration

Finally, the school where your child has been educated for the past seven years will know your child and will know the local secondary schools. Ask the school head which secondary school your child would be best attending and why. It will give you another perspective as to how well your child might settle and learn. Making decisions about your child’s future secondary school, based on the narrow measures from Ofsted and DfE is only part of the picture. It’s worth doing the legwork as described above as this is the school that will support your child over the next 5 years and onto GCSEs.

Diary dates

You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October

1st March 2024 is National Offer Day. Parents can log onto their local authority’s website to see their offer, after which letters will be posted out

You must apply for a place at a school, even if it’s linked to your child’s current primary school

ABC TO READ AWARD WINNING CHARITY HELP CHILDREN GAIN READING CONFIDENCE

ABC to read is the only award winning charity in Berkshire set up to help children gain confidence in reading. They aim to provide trained, vetted and supported reading mentors to work with children who are struggling with their reading to Berkshire schools. In recent surveys 98% of children improved in reading performance, 97% improved their attitude to read, 100% of children’s overall achievement was raised. ABC to read have transformed children’s lives since 2004. The volunteers include teachers and a variety of people from the community who help with their time and expertise. ABC to read support over 500 Berkshire children each week with comprehensive, quality 1-1 support. The volunteers come to school twice a week and spend half an hour with each child, playing word games, reading and boosting their confidence and skills. The charity also deliver workshops to parents, 6th form students and to older students with the aim to support children and younger peers for whom reading is a challenge. For any new volunteers to take part in training or more information about training days or joining the scheme as a school contact E: info@abctoread.org.uk T: 0118 9511336

NURTURE FUN AND LEARNING WITH MINI MAESTROS

MUSIC

Go and join Mini Maestros fun, interactive, live music sessions! You are never too young to develop a love of music, and singing with babies and young children is a natural part of human life that happens in every culture across the world. Singing with your little ones strengthens your bond with them - you are directly helping them to develop positive relationships when you are bouncing, tickling, swinging, cuddling and laughing together. Plus, you are encouraging listening and sound making that lead to the development of their speech and communication. Mini Maestros classes for 0-7 year olds help to nurture this learning and give you the skills to keep this going at home. Please get in touch with the Berkshire Music Trust via email or visit their website to find your local class.
