CLEAR LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS: STRENGTHENING YOUR PARTNERSHIPS SATURDAY, 26 NOVEMBER 2022

MONASH BUSINESS SCHOOL

Lifelong Learning Day

Clear Leadership Essentials: Strengthening Your Partnerships Effective leadership and professional performance increasingly require us to have constructive relationships with those people we need to be in partnership with. While our partnerships and key working relationships often start out well, they can sometimes falter especially when we are under pressure, when circumstances change and when conditions become challenging. Often, when issues in our partnerships arise, we need to have a difficult or challenging conversation. As professionals, leaders and managers we know that difficult conversations are tricky, and they sometimes have an adverse impact on our relationships when they don’t go well. Organisations, teams and work groups in which people have trouble speaking clearly and effectively about their perspectives and experiences of each other are often characterised by what might be termed ‘interpersonal mush’. Confusion, misunderstandings, a lack of trust, a failure to follow through as expected and the repetition of problem patterns are common manifestations of this ‘mush’. Have you ever been in a meeting or discussion where you feel that the real issues are not being discussed? Have you ever felt that you’d like to say something about your perspective on an issue, but don’t feel that you can because it will be taken the wrong way? Have you ever felt that it might not be safe to express your views for fear of being judged, corrected or criticised? If so then chances are you are in the ‘mush’.

Clear Leadership Essentials introduces the principles and practices of clear leadership. Clear Leadership provides an evidencebased framework and approach for helping leaders establish and sustain effective working partnerships by clearing away the interpersonal mush and replacing it with interpersonal clarity. Equipped with the foundational skills for Clear Leadership you will be able to lead learning conversations with those that you need to be in partnership with. Clear leadership can help you effectively and directly address problem patterns in relationships, identify what’s really going on when partnerships become problematic, and better understand the impact of your leadership practice and actions on those around you. In the program we will develop practical skills to help you: B e more aware of your in-the-moment experience U se clear language and be descriptive with others in ways that strengthen your relationships B e more curious and become a more effective listener R ecognise and be able to exercise more control over your reactivity in those ‘hot’ moments L ead and guide constructive organisational learning conversations to support partnership and genuine collaboration.
