DEAR READERS Dear Readers, Often, I find myself sitting in Israel reading the paper or listening to the news, wishing there was something I could do to help improve Israel’s image abroad. The reality is that while I’m living my regular busy life in Israel, there really isn’t much that I can effectively accomplish. That feeling of helplessness, though, is lifted whenever I am traveling abroad. As a visitor in another country (usually some part of the United States), I feel as though I have a unique opportunity to advocate for Israel. I clearly have no official position and I do not make it my mission to lecture anyone, but somehow just “being from Israel” becomes a tool by which to impact people. It often begins with a stranger’s very friendly and innocent question of “so, where are you visiting from?” When I proudly reply, “Israel”, I am met with excited curiosity and intrigue.

The conversation never turns political or heavy; it usually revolves around questions about whether I like living here, what I do or what the weather is like. It almost always includes a comment, by both Jews and non-Jews, along the lines of, “I have always wanted to visit Israel”, to which I respond with enthusiasm and encouragement to plan the trip now. Sometimes I’ll meet a college student who is debating joining a birthright group and just needs a little push. These chance conversations happen almost everywhere with anyone, from the rent-a-car place to a store owner, hotel lobby or airport. You needn’t join a conference or delegation to work on Israel’s behalf. I believe that all of us, just by being regular, decent, polite people (with well-behaved children, if possible) can make a positive and lasting impression on Israel’s behalf. Happy travels, Caryn and Daniella

Vote in the US Elections to Protect and Support Israel By: Elie Pieprz

You may be thinking, what do the US elections have to do with Israel and why am I reading a headline about voting in the US elections in June – more than five months before the elections are scheduled. The answer is that voting in the US elections from Israel is one of the most powerful actions any US citizen can take to protect Israel and assert her priorities in the eyes of decision makers in Washington, DC. And the reason why you are reading this headline now is that if you do not act soon, you will have squandered a unique opportunity to help Israel protect herself.

To help explain and facilitate voting in the US elections from Israel, a new non-profit organization was established, www.iVoteIsrael.com. It acts as a concierge to facilitate the process of voting from Israel and encourage all US citizens to take advantage of their right to vote. Not only can you request your absentee ballot through its website, but iVoteIsrael will send someone to your door, assist you in filling out your form and deliver it via the US Embassy to the proper county board of elections where you are registered to vote. But you need to do it soon or you may not receive Continues on page 6

your ballot in time to vote. It is important to note that all US citizens born or naturalized in the US can vote in the 2012 elections. The US even allows US citizens who were born in Israel and never lived in the US to vote in most cases (be sure to contact iVoteIsrael for details). But do votes that are cast from overseas count? And do they ever make a difference? The answers to those questions are: Yes and Yes. Absentee ballots that are cast from outside of the US are counted just like any other vote. The ballots themselves are indistinguishable from a ballot cast at the local polling station. As for making a difference, every year there are significant races that are extremely close and are not determined until every ballot (including all absentee ballots) is counted. In 2010, a congressional race on Long Island, NY was not determined until December 8th, a full month after Election Day as 11,000 absentee ballots had to be counted very carefully. The difference between the candidates was a mere 593 votes.

But the most high profile race in recent memory was the 2000 Presidential election. The entire Presidential campaign came down to the race in the state of Florida. The ultimate difference between Bush and Gore was only 537 votes. There are a lot more than 537 Florida voters living in Israel. How many do you think bothered to vote in that pivotal election? The answer might surprise you, as it was just 64. iVoteIsrael is committed to ensuring that Americans in Israel will not miss another opportunity like that again. Looking at the 2012 election, the Presidential race is just getting started and will certainly be very competitive in many states, with large populations in Israel, such as Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Many other states will feature competitive Senate races including New York, Massachusetts, Michigan and Arizona, as well as countless competitive Congressional and Governor races. But beyond any specific race, the real value of your vote is that it comes from Israel. By casting your vote from Israel you will

be enhancing Israel’s political capital in DC. By voting in large numbers, we can show policy makers and elected officials, that not only is Israel a great ally of the US, but large numbers of their voting constituents live here too. And if US policy harms Israel in any way, we as voters will have the final say. Think about the many issues that the President and Congress will be determining that directly influence your life. Regarding Iran, how will the US influence Israel? How will they treat Iran? How will the US impact other Arab countries? They will all have a great impact on our lives here. Will the US pressure Israel to divide and give up control of Jerusalem? Will the US push Israel to cease construction or evacuate Yehuda & Shomron? Will the US government ignore the de-legitimization of Israel that occurs in many diplomatic channels as well as on US college campuses? Will the US defend and support Israeli interests in the UN? These are the kinds of questions that you should be considering as you request your ballot to participate in the US elections. When you do so, you will be helping Israel and ensuring that US elected officials will be held accountable for how they treat Israel. Elie Pieprz is the National Director of iVoteIsrael. Education Update By: Daniella Hellerstein

ModiInfo sat down with Moish Levy, Deputy Mayor in charge of education, for an update on the Modiin school system. This is the first year that the city of Modiin is not opening a new school in September. There are, though, many new school buildings being built for schools that are currently housed in other buildings. The AMIT high school will build separate boys’ and girls’ buildings near the center of the city. The Ariel elementary school will build a new building on Begin Street and the YOZMA School will have a new building in the Kramim neighborhood. The four new school buildings should be ready by September 2013. The city plans to spend the next year evaluating the success of every school and making sure all needs are met before opening new ones. Yet, they anticipate that many new schools will still be needed in the future to meet the demands of the fastest growing city. Already a new high school is planned for the Avnei Chen

10

neighborhood. Another change will be a loosening of the zoning restrictions which, by and large, determine which schools children attend. The city believed that while new schools were opening it was important to ensure that a Deputy Mayor Moish Levy minimum number of children register at each school. This was done by assigning schools to children based on neighborhood. Now that all the Modiin schools are sufficiently populated, the city will allow families to choose schools for their children (as opposed to the city choosing for families). While it is arguable whether this was ever really necessary (the schools are better known for overcrowding than scarcity) the city does not expect this change to greatly effect registration by

virtue of the fact that most families prefer to send their children to the school closest to where they live. Ganim, on the other hand, will see many new nurseries open this fall. This is in large part due to the Trachtenberg law recently passed requiring cities to provide free education from age 3 (not 5 as has been until now).To meet these demands the city has already started building (or rather placing) many new ganim. To alleviate excessive demand on the city, the government has decided to subsidize the cost of a private gan. This means the private gamin (definition, ganim that are registered in the city, i.e. WIZO) can continue to function and families can continue to choose privately run nursery programs but pay less. Nonetheless, 15 new ganim will open this year and a total of 53 are expected to open over the next three years. The Modiin schools are also becoming more tech savvy, to the benefit of both teachers and students. This September all elementary school teachers will receive laptops and all classrooms will be equipped with internet access, screens and projectors. Although not imminent, there is talk of all school books being uploaded to computers. Gone will be the days of expensive book sales for parents, “I forgot my book” excuses for teachers, and burning the most hated school book by students.

Race of Life By: David Nachenberg

On Friday, May 4, 2012, over 400 runners and joggers of all ages, from 6 to over 70, participated in the 9th annual “Race of Life” in Reut. The race is held in memory of two local teens, Eran Kochavi and Adi Hadas, and is organized by the high school students in Reut each year. The weather was perfect for the participants and spectators alike. Twenty-year-old Ziv Ashkenazi finished the 3000 meter course in a respectable time of 9:30 and Aviv Rodriguez, son of a local basketball coach, finished in second place in 9:40. Seventeenyear-old Maya Cohen was the first female to cross the finish line, in 12:45. Neta Alenson, 21 years old, was the second female finisher in the event. Dana Aboudi, a local high school student who is the top female runner in our area, did not participate due to injury, but she is hoping to return to racing soon.

Unwanted Creatures By: Penina Neustadter

“Mommy, my hair is itchy!” When your child comes to you and says those dreaded words, don’t panic. Living in Israel, we all have our challenges and we all have our threshold of what we can handle. One of those challenges is dealing with lice. Pediculosis Capitis, also known as common head lice, is a parasite that lives only on the head and feeds off blood from the scalp. Anyone can get it and no-one wants it!! Symptoms of head lice are itchy scalp, possible red bumps on the neck along with sometimes being able to see the nits and lice. The difference between the lice and nits is that the lice are the bugs and the nits are the eggs. While generally people assume that one accompanies the other, I have treated cases where there are just nits. The way this can happen is by a louse laying nits on a host, and then “jumping” to a new host. They do not jump or fly. They do not have wings to fly or knees to jump, they grip. Their two front claws allow them to grab onto a hair or material so that they can transfer by crawling, very quickly. So how do you get rid of these pesky, blood sucking parasites?

The first step is to avoid getting conned by buying lice products, such as, shampoos and sprays. All this does is give a false sense of confidence that you have cleaned out your child. Since the nits are impenetrable, the shampoos might kill the bug, but then you are still left with the nits that will hatch, and hence the cycle continues. Also, using the essential oils, such as, rosemary and tea tree oil, are not necessary. I have cleaned out kids who smell like the oils. The method that I have found with the highest success rate is using a good lice comb and conditioner. Once the conditioner is applied, which prevents the bugs from moving from around, comb out the hair in sections and then combining all of them. Continue combing until NOTHING comes out. This is tedious and time consuming, BUT IT WORKS!! All that is required is someone with patience and time. Being The Kinanit, aka The Lice Lady, I have seen the spectrum of infestations. Being diligent and aware that your child can get lice at any time is the best prevention to future infestations. Penina Neustadter can be reached at 054-234-1016.

The Wedding Planner

By: ModiInfo Staff

Sometimes a book is not just a book. Sometimes a book is a journal, a photo album, a resource guide and eventually an heirloom all in one. Sometimes it starts out as simple as a few pages but evolves into a something so beautiful it is a treasure. In an age when so much of what we do is online, the touch and feel of a book becomes all the more special. To hold it in your hands, flip through the pages, touch the pasted in photographs and feel the personal touch of a handwritten message becomes an experience in and of itself. The formation of this particular book began when a friend got engaged. One girl, Hadar, had the idea to collect information about how to plan a wedding and create a personal planner as a gift for her engaged

friend. The resulting book is a compilation of checklists and advice about every detail which add up to a wealth of information. Carefully organized according to category (around 20) there is plenty of room

for the couple to make notes of their own and input any information they need to keep track of. Various pesukim, pictures of the couple and decorative adornments are what make it an invaluable keepsake. After the success of the first book, Hadar made one for every engaged friend after that until she herself got engaged and another friend, Estee Stern, made one for her. The beauty and practicality of the book became known in other circles and the idea spread to other groups. Now the young women are making plans to launch a small business, creating custom books by order as gifts. To order one, call Estee at 054-550-3186.

What’s New in Orthodontics By: Dr. Elisha Reichenberg Everyone would love to have a beautiful smile. Yet many are still hesitant. Two of the most common reasons people give when asked why they don’t want braces are appearance (“I don’t like how braces look”), and time (“I don’t want to wear braces for two years or more”). Though the goals of modern orthodontic care – esthetics, harmony and function haven’t changed, research and innovation now allow orthodontic specialists to straighten teeth in ways that could not have been imagined a generation ago. Improvements in manufacturing have opened the door to new brace systems designed to improve the comfort, speed and appearance of orthodontic treatment. New wire materials and properties, new brace designs with esthetic materials, and the use of computers and diagnostic imaging have all given the orthodontist advanced tools to meet each patient’s needs. New technology allows the orthodontist to simulate optimal orthodontic teeth movement on their computer screen giving the patients a glance to their future appearance, and the opportunity to design their smile.

18

Let us now focus on some of the most important innovations. Novel bioengineering systems have created new orthodontic wires which are super-elastic and apply very light forces on teeth, allowing efficient tooth movement with minimum pain. These are long acting wires hence patient can visit orthodontist after 6 to 12 weeks rather than regular 4 weeks for adjustments. Self-ligating brackets (sophisticated, smart, Damon, etc) are not a new concept. They have undergone a revival over the past years with a variety of new

To Advertise: 052-6404414 | 052-3868768 | info@modiinfo.com | www.modiinfo.com

appliances being developed. Self ligating brackets have inbuilt ligation for securing orthodontic wires in the bracket slot. This not only reduces chair time in changing the wires but is also believed to make the treatment faster due to reduced friction. Orthodontic implants are miniature screws which are painlessly placed and removed in the bone around the teeth. These implants offer additional anchorage or support for variety of tooth movements which were considered difficult or impossible to achieve. The implants have expanded the ability of the orthodontist to achieve controlled tooth movements in a variety of complex situations. Because of increased desire to have better set of teeth, nowadays, many adults are opting for orthodontic treatment. Availability of lingual or invisible braces have made this treatment possible for socially active adults who want their orthodontic treatment to be concealed. Ceramic translucent braces are an esthetic alternative to the classic metal braces. Although treatment with old ceramic brackets historically lasted longer compared to steel brackets due to increased friction, new ceramic bracket glazing has minimized this frictional tendency, and has

20

overcome this hurdle. Lingual braces are placed on the inner aspects of teeth and hence are completely invisible. These have made orthodontic treatment possible for individuals, particularly adults who do not want their braces to be seen at all. Though it may be a little difficult to adjust to lingual braces in the beginning due to tongue irritation, once the adjustment period is over, further treatment is generally without any discomfort. But what about patients who don’t want to wear braces at all? Invisalign® (clear aligners) is leading the way with one of the most exciting innovations that has changed the face of orthodontic treatment. Developed for adults more than 10 years ago, Invisalign® has helped over one million people achieve straight teeth without the use of metal braces. Invisalign® straightens teeth with a series of custom-made, clear aligners. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks and then changed for the next one in the series. The number of aligners will vary from patient to patient. The teeth move gradually, little by little to their new positions. Invisalign® also uses advanced 3-D imaging technology to help the orthodontist plan the movement of teeth to their desired

To Advertise: 052-6404414 | 052-3868768 | info@modiinfo.com | www.modiinfo.com

position. Because the aligners are removable for eating and brushing, there is the added benefit of being able to keep teeth clean during treatment and the improved appearance that many patients, especially adults, seek. The Aerodentis system is a brand-new treatment paradigm for straightening teeth, based on over three decades of medical research developed lately in Israel. Suitable for all ages, the system applies programmable pulsating force to the teeth, via a builtin air pressure element on a removable transparent mouthpiece. Intended for use at night while sleeping, the Aerodentis treatment system offers complete freedom from any orthodontic device during the day and throughout normal activities. For just 10 hours a day and with no unsightly metal braces or uncomfortable plastic aligners, patients can undergo proven and effective light orthodontic treatment at a pace that is in harmony with modern lifestyle.

Finally, patients of all ages can benefit from the wonderful advancements taking place in orthodontics. There are now options for a faster, more comfortable and esthetic treatment than ever before. It is important to keep in mind however, that all systems have their limitations and drawbacks, and should be carefully used and monitored by a professional. Treatment by an orthodontic specialist who has been specifically trained to provide the best experience and knowledge available, has the tools to recommend and custom design a treatment plan to meet the specific needs of each patient, allows patients to ensure a safe, predictable treatment, and finally, to enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile.

Lingual braces have made orthodontic treatment possible for individuals, particularly adults who do not want their braces to be seen at all.

Branding Your Event By: Elisheva Goldman Creating a constant and consistent thread throughout your event allows your guests to notice the details that will define your simcha as your own. From color schemes to logo décor to give-aways; maintaining a common motif in all the items and details that you send or give to your guests differentiates your event from everyone else’s. Choosing a color scheme is crucial to branding your event. Whether it is two colors or a colorful pattern – decide on it at the start and continue with it! The introduction to your event is your “save the date” or invitation. Before choosing the invitation, decide what colors you intend to use throughout your event. A casual invitation or a formal one? Let it reflect your venue and the “feel’ you want to impart. If you were planning a wedding at the beach or in a garden, your invitation should convey something completely different than if your wedding were taking place at a hotel. Typefaces also say a lot about your event. When working on a budget, a great way to create the feel of a “designed” invitation, at no additional expense, is to mix fonts. Choose a very classic font for the body of your invitation and a fun script for the name. Siddurim, chumashim, etc. should all correspond with the overall look and color scheme of your invitation. Each item you present to your guests should embody the look of your simcha.

The décor should mirror your theme or color palette. From place cards, welcoming your guests, to linen, centerpieces and floral arrangements; all elements should convey the overall scheme of the event. For example, if you were hosting a wedding on the beach in Caesarea, flip-flop place card holders would be a fun way to welcome your guests. Another fun look is to greet everyone with a chilled glass of champagne and attach the place card to a little umbrella in the drink. If your son is sports obsessed, don’t be afraid to incorporate his personality into the décor. Basketballs and soccer balls can be great vase for beautiful flowers. The giveaway is your parting gift to your guest. Whether they have flown in for the event or driven five minutes, your guest has put him/herself out to come and share in your simcha, and this is your small way of saying, Thank you. This giveaway should be a direct reflection of the hosts and or the event theme. For example, if you were celebrating a Bar Mitzvah Erev Pesach, a thoughtful gift might be a Bdikat Chametz kit for each couple. You could have satchels sewn in the colors of the event and print the bracha on a card matching the invitation with benchers that included a note wishing everyone a Chag Kasher VSameach. Kippot are a wonderful gift and practical too. Often guests will put them on during the simcha, creating a festive atmosphere. Here Continues on page 34

How to Plan a Stress-Free Simcha… Seriously?????

By: Jodi Wachspress

A stress free simcha… Really? I don’t mean to burst your bubble but as far as I know stress is a part of life. If we go through life thinking we can avoid stress, well, we can’t – and even if we could, life would be pretty darn boring. We can sit and plan and make lists and charts and spreadsheets, delegate and take responsibility, all to ensure that our bris, simchat bat, adoption ceremony, bar or bat mitzvah, wedding, sheva brachot… even monumental birthdays – go off without a hitch. We want everyone to be happy and have a great time, while the photographer captures every delicious, heartwarming moment for us to relish for years to come. Just thinking about all of these events makes my blood pressure shoot through the roof! Let’s be honest, a stress free simcha is an oxymoron. The reality is that planning life events is no easy feat. Everyone has a different opinion of what a perfect simcha entails,

28

and when I say everyone I am talking about husbands, wives, parents, children, in-laws, friends, machatonim … not to mention the actual guest/s of honor. So, what is the best way to take on this awesome task? Even if we accept that things will get stressful, it would be nice to know that we get to the big day without having a nervous breakdown.

From Feeling the Frustration to Taking on the Challenge I could sit here and write pages on how to organize ourselves, and prepare for every possible scenario. The thing is… it’s not about how prepared we are, it is about what attitude we have while preparing. We often become frustrated when things do not go the way we envisioned them. As my grandmother always says; “man Continues on page 30

Shape Up for Your Simcha By: ModiInfo Staff

Procrastinating is easy to do. Usually it takes some outside force to finally motivate us to do what we’ve been putting off. Making a simcha is often an opportunity to take care of those things we’ve been trying to ignore. For some it may be painting the house, fixing things that have broken or getting better organized. For many it is simply getting our bodies in shape so we can look and feel our best at our big event. Starting an exercise routine is not just about losing the weight to fit into a dress for one occasion but about a commitment to a lifestyle change that includes better eating habits and more. The goal should be about gaining the energy to look and feel our best as opposed to shedding as many pounds as quickly as possible which we all know will eventually find their way back on. There are so many kinds of exercises and classes available as well as many gyms that finding the right place to start can be very overwhelming. You want to find something that’s right for you as well as something you will enjoy. A great starting point is Pilates, a body conditioning routine that helps build flexibility, long lean muscles, strength and endurance. Pilates focuses on developing a strong core as well as on correct breathing. Although created in 1883

by Joseph Pilates, the exercise has become very popular recently. The Body in Mind Pilates Studio uses the classic Pilates method and personal attention to help their clients achieve healthier, leaner bodies. They recently took the success of their Jerusalem studio on Emek Refaim and their Tel Aviv studio on Rothschild and opened a third studio on Nahal Sorek in Modiin. They offer private, semiprivate or small classes to meet the needs of each individual. The instructors at Body In Mind will recommend the right arrangement for you and you will be taken by the friendly, non-threatening and professional atmosphere. Although it’s often hard to take the first step, joining a class or setting up a regular session ensures commitment that pays off. Making that call will be one of the best outcomes of your simcha. With some hard work and guidance, by your next event, getting in shape, will no longer be on your to-do list. Body In Mind is located on 8 Nahal Sorek, 08-970-2202.

plans and G-d laughs.” The end of that quote could easily be, “and man becomes frustrated”. Confusion or uncertainty, often experienced as frustration, is a primary emotion. It is an instinctive reaction, one which we cannot control. What we can control is our ‘secondary emotion’ or how we translate this frustration and react to it. People deal with frustration in many different ways. A child may become frustrated when he walks into a toy store to buy a present for his friend’s birthday party. Not knowing what to do with this frustration (otherwise known as “the gimmees”) he becomes confused. “I know what will make me happy (a Ninjago Lego set)… Mom won’t let me have it (witch). Mom doesn’t want me to be happy???” These feelings may lead to anger (big fit right in the middle of Toy’s R Us), sadness (oh no, not the tears) or displacing his confusion to take it out on his poor little brother who had absolutely nothing to do with the whole thing (sheeeesh!). When we walked into that toy store, we knew that we were stepping into hot water. As adults, we can prepare ourselves for

inevitable stress. If we walk into the toy store knowing full well that we may have to deal with our child’s stress and our own, we can choose how we are going to re-act to it. It is important to make the shift from getting stuck in a frustrating situation, to accepting the situation as a challenge. In doing so we recognize our frustration (primary emotion), and accept it. We can choose to take a deep breath and deal with our little angel patiently, or become agitated and ultimately unproductive or – even worse-counterproductive. In planning an event, we can’t always anticipate where the stress or frustration will pop up. Sometimes we are taken by surprise by a misprint on the benchers, a cousin who shows up unexpectedly (with his wife and five kids... “we didn’t think we could make it but, surprise!), a forgotten speech, or a nasty stomach bug. Do we pick up the benchers, notice that our last name is misspelled even after we proofed it (total frustration/primary

emotion) and become angry (secondary emotion) at ourselves? The printer? Or even at our completely innocent children just because when we come home the kitchen is a mess? Or do we choose to accept an unfortunate misspelling and either let it go or go back to the printer, admit our mistake and reprint? So, here it is: The secret to planning a successful and meaningful simcha is…accepting the inevitable stress, confusion, frustration and aggravation, embracing it, and reacting to it while keeping in mind who and what this simcha is about. Mazal Tov!

It’s not about how prepared we are, it’s about what attitude we have while preparing.

Sound at Your Simcha: Music or Noise? By: Mordechai Gordon noise n. Sound or a sound that is loud, unpleasant, unexpected, or undesired. [Middle English, from Old French, perhaps from Vulgar Latin *nausea, discomfort, from Latin nausea, seasickness; see nausea.] mu·sic n. An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds. [Middle English, from Old French musique, from Latin musica, from Greek mousike (art) of the Muses, feminine of mousikos, of the Muses] Everyone loves music. Not everyone likes the same type of music, but there is usually some music to be found which

32

touches even the grimmest soul. Everyone hates noise. In fact the etymological roots of the word “noise” itself originate in the Latin “nausea”. Our problem arises when the line between the two becomes blurred … I know a highly successful photographer who takes pictures at several simchas a week, and he always takes earplugs with him to shut out the music. I have met simchagoers that keep a pair of earplugs in their pocket when attending a simcha. And we are not just talking about full-band weddings with a noisy drummer (though in my book a good drummer is one who has a light touch

and a solid groove, more about that later), even at a small bar mitzva with just a keyboard player one can encounter uncomfortably high volume levels. What is the cause of this phenomenon? Sometimes it is because the musician actually thinks his music is worth listening to over the conversation at the tables (silly mistake; the guests have not come to hear his tinkling, virtuosic as it may be). But more often it is a misconception regarding energy and loudness. Even some professional musicians think that to increase the energy level they need to turn up the volume. It is true that to get a crowd moving a certain loudness level is required (and that can sometimes be uncomfortable to older people with sensitive ears) but it need not be uncomfortable. There is a much more important ingredient to get things cooking than pressing play on a CD player or automatic keyboard and blasting the speakers to bits. It is more about the energy of the musician himself and the ineffable something that he puts into the music. A lot of musicians and DJ’s have forgotten that music is art and are just churning out industrial computer generated beats to get the bodies moving. I believe there is a sweet spot where rhythm, harmony and simcha come together and when you hit it you can feel it. Even without cranking up the amplifier. In modern pop music loudness has become such an important issue that special limiting and compression processing is applied to tracks to make them sound louder than the other songs played on the radio. This is known as the “loudness wars”. Try listening to LMFAO’s recently popular track “Party Rock Anthem” then any older, classic rock track, such as one by Pink Floyd or The Beatles. You’ll feel you need to turn the volume up because the older track is too quiet. This is because the music has been “squashed” or processed to make it sound loud all the time rather than having lows and highs. This has the effect of sucking the life out of the music rather than letting it breathe naturally, and makes people think that if it isn’t loud then it doesn’t cut the mustard. As always in art – the volume of the music is about balance and sensitivity. Having said that there are loudness related aspects which are beyond the control of the musician, such as the acoustics of the hall. If the event hall has an echo (you can tell by clapping your hands loud when the hall is empty and listening for the sound continuing after your clap) then it is very difficult for the musician to control the volume. The music may sound great when it issues from the speakers but by the time it reaches the back of the hall and bounces around for a while it is awash with reverberations. The only way you can combat this is choosing a different hall! If this is important to you then I recommend checking out the hall while there is a simcha going on there so you can hear for yourself – if there is a high ceiling and an uncomfortably boomy, diffuse sound, it is likely to be the acoustics of the room that are causing the music to sound “noisy”. Sightseeing & Smachot By: Leah Epstein-Steinmetz Congratulations! Mazal Tov! You and your loved ones are celebrating a happy occasion. Take a deep breath! Planning the event is going to require a lot of energy and hard work, attention to countless details, multitasking ability, an incredible amount of pressure. Fun, too, hopefully, that will come in the end. As we say, “Last made but first planned!” As an experienced tour company working with the Anglo community, we are very familiar with the numerous details that must be considered when making a simcha in Israel. Some things to think about in advance might be: What would make the event significant and more meaningful to you? Would you like the party to be close to nature? Would you prefer to have your party at the most elegant hotel or somewhere personally significant to you? When would you

36

like to have it, if it is up to you? A brit or bar/bat mitzvah is hardly in your hands, a wedding maybe more. Birthdays and anniversaries are more flexible. Is it best in the summer or maybe after the holidays? Or when the rest of your family can come from abroad? Who is at the focal point of this event? If it is a bar/bat mitzvah – is it the child or the parents? A wedding – the couple, obviously, but who is making the decisions: the couple or the parents? Understanding the answers to these questions will help you create the best event for you! If you know what you want we recommend that you work with a party planner. He/she may enhance your ideas with new options and possibilities and will be the one taking care of all the details. You will be a guest as your own dream party materializes in front of you! An experienced party planner will

work with your defined budget and may save you up to 10% of the cost! Guests from abroad: How many are coming? How close to you are they; are you going to have them staying at your home with you? Are you going to encourage them to go touring, so they get out of your way while you are getting ready and finalizing the last details? Are you going to relax and join their tour when the parties are over? Planning the trip for and with your guests: Have they been here before? How long ago? Are they traveling with children? What is it they really like to do? Are they physically fit? How long can they spend on the tour? For most people Jerusalem is the main highlight! The North has many points of interest too. Tel Aviv is fun and interesting and Jaffa has a lot of new perspectives as well. Masada and the Dead Sea can be done as a day trip out of Jerusalem. Some people extend their trip south to Eilat and even take a day to explore Petra. The use of time is highly important when combining the wish to

travel with attending the family events. We recommend the private tour options, where you direct your tour preferences and let the professionals plan and operate it for you. This can work within almost any budget, with almost any level of accommodations, providing that you do not compromise on the guide and on the location of where you stay. Party Perfect!

By: Dalia Zack

Mazel Tov! You are celebrating a simcha in Israel. The thought can be daunting. There is so much to do and so little time. It can help to divide the task into the following six “W’’ questions to help kick off the process. WHY? What event are you planning for? Brit/simchat bat, bar/ bat mitzvah or wedding? Each of these smachot has different needs and considerations. If you are planning a bar/bat Mitzvah- you will want to consider the child’s desires as well as you own. Planning for a brit may be stress full because of the time element. This is a time when it’s ok to ask for help from family and friends. A wedding is especially complex as the desires of the young couple and your future in-laws have to be met as well as your own. Just remember that a simcha is meant to be enjoyed and a bit of compromise goes a long way. WHEN? Take out the calendar and decide which date works best for you and your family. If you have family coming in from overseas, it might be worth taking a minute to send out a save-the-date e-mail

38

so that people can make their travel plans well in advance. From personal experience, I recommend checking the youth movements calendars to make sure that your bar/bat Mitzvah does not overlap with any tiyul they are planning. Check with other classmates to make sure that party dates don’t clash. The date you choose will never work out perfectly for everyone but the more notice you give (3-4 weeks in advance) can make it easier for you guests to plan to share the simcha with you. WHO? The guest list is an important part of your simcha planning. It dictates the size of the hall you will need and your budget. If you are thinking of having just family and a few friends, you can consider having the event in your own home or garden. A larger event will mean renting a shul hall or event hall. The hall should suit the number of guests you are having. A crowded room or too large room can take away from your guest’s enjoyment of the simcha. If your guests are mostly children- namely the friends of the bar/bat mitzvah- keep the food and entertainment child friendly-

they won’t appreciate a gourmet meal! WHERE? Your choice of venue depends on your budget, number of guests, time of year and the distance you are prepared to travel. An outdoor event is wonderful if the weather allows. Shul halls are very popular as they provide an intimate atmosphere and you can decorate it to your own personal taste-but you have to be prepared to coordinate all the vendors yourself. An event hall is a good option as well. They take care of all the details and you can basically sit back and relax. It pays to make sure they have an up-to-date license and always check that your venue has wheelchair access if you have family or friends that might need it. Thankfully the choices of venues in the Modiin area has greatly expanded in the past few years- we don’t have to schlep far anymore to have a top notch simcha! WHAT? Now is the time to plan what your event will look like. Start making notes of caterers, musicians, photographers, videographers, party planners/decorators that you would like to get price quotes from. Ask friends and family who they have used in the past and were pleased with their service. When dealing with caterers it pays to find out at the start if they have the Kashrut Certificate that you desire. In addition, ask if they can provide vegetarian meals and ask if they are willing to provide children’s meals at a reduced price. Every detail that you can plan ahead of time will save you time, money and heartache. Continues on page 43

First Impression Personalized invitations are in!

By Fani Werthaim & Aharonit Trejger Choosing an invitation is an important task. It all begins with that piece of paper. The invitation is the introduction to your unique event. There are so many options from classic to modern styles. If you want something out of the ordinary one option is to use patterns, typographic text, embossing, ribbons and other unique accessories. Another new concept that’s become very trendy is Visual Identity. Visual Identity is when a designer creates a logo for the event along with a color scheme. The invitation matches the place cards, menu and all the event stationery. You can choose from pre-made designs or if you prefer, have a customized design made especially for your event.

Invitation FAQ

What is the process for custom design?

How long before the celebration should I start thinking about the invitation? The first thing to do is schedule a meeting with your stationer to discuss the event. It’s best to do so a few months before the event so you can see all available options and get acquainted with new trends. Don’t think a few months before is too soon since advance planning will only help keep you calm while organizing your event. Then, when the date gets closer you can place your order without being rushed. There’s a difference between using existing artwork and working with a designer to create a new one. In the first case, it usually takes about a week – 10 days for the whole process – from the moment you place your order until you receive the invitations. If you have an idea you would like made into an original design for your invitation, consider about a month for design plus a week for printing. In both cases, timing can be affected by various factors. For example, the extent of your revisions, how detailed is the artwork is, printing, and a number of elements added to the invitation such as cutting, embossing and ribbons. Most important to remember is the time they need to be mailed. That’s why it’s best to order early.

Schedule a consultation to discuss your ideas and share your vision with the designer. Then, after working on the creation, the designer should send you a digital version – a sample of the design via computer. The design may not be exactly what you expected but you can always revise it until you’re satisfied (note: every designer has his work terms).

Will I receive a proof of the invitation? Yes, first a digital one, then after you’ve given your approval, you receive a printed one.

Do I own the artwork of my purchased invitations? Not necessarily. All artwork used on items purchased is the sole property of the designer and can be used only with the designer’s permission. If you create a custom design then you can use it as you wish in your event.

I heard of something called e-invite. What is it? An e-invite is an invitation via email. You can send invitations, Continues on page 42

Party Perfect: Continued from page 39 WOW? A memorable simcha starts with the “wow” factor that you can add with some personal touches. A video clip that highlights the child interests and hobbies is always fun to watch. Most halls today provide a screen and projector for viewing. A fun photo collage and an album where friends and family can scribble their good wishes also becomes a keepsake for the family. Don’t forget about the tables- that’s the perfect place to add color, fun and a personal touch. Flowers, balloons, or candies on the tables add interest and variety. You can also order all kinds of blow- ups online that can highlight a sports, music or baby theme. At the shekel store you can pick up shtick (party favors) that the guests love to dance with and then take home. Before you leave your children to attend your next event, hear what the babysitters wish they could tell you. The following is a compilation of requests from our local sitters: 1. If you say you are going to be home at a certain time, please call if you’ll be late. 2. Please don’t call five minutes before you need us. 3. It helps to tell us the Wi-Fi code before you leave. 4. If we say we can’t babysit and don’t offer a reason why not, please don’t ask us. 5. If we say we can’t for a reason, please don’t try to convince us you can make it work. 6. Babysitting shouldn’t include housework (folding laundry/ washing dishes) or running errands. 7. If we say we can, but we need to study, and you say that we will be able to because the kids will be sleeping, then it’s really important that they be sleeping. 8. Changing dirty diapers is part of the job, but we would appreciate it if you didn’t leave knowing your child has one. 9. Please drive or walk us home so we don’t have to drive or walk

at night alone. It’s important to tell us if a child is under the weather (once I had no idea that the baby had the flu and I was sick for a week after). Please ask us what we charge before you pay us. We appreciate it when you give us specific information about any allergy/disease your child might have. You should let us know if you are expecting any visitors/phone calls before, and be sure to show us emergency numbers and be very clear about bedtime, rules, if and what they can eat, etc… You should always tell us where the plastic cups are! Kilometers for Koby

By: Sammy Green, 14 years old

A few months ago, my mom, Rachel, and I saw an ad in Torah Tidbits for a three-day hike to raise money for the Koby Mandell Foundation. At the time, I think we each had very different reasons for wanting to participate. I know that my mom wanted to go because she was excited for the challenge of hiking for three days on Shvil Yisrael (the Israel trail) in the beautiful mountains of Jerusalem. I know that I wanted to go because I was excited to miss three days of school. Even though we each went with different expectations…we both left with the same feeling….inspired.

48

This year on May 22, we participated in the second annual “Kilometers for Koby” hike. Last year there were 15 participants…. this year over 30 trekkers hiked over the course of five days. My mom and I were the only mother-son participants. It was amazing meeting all the different individuals who chose to take time out of their busy schedules to raise money and awareness for such an important cause. Perhaps the biggest impact on us was the opportunity to meet and walk with Sherri and Seth Mandel, the parents of Koby Mandell and founders of the Koby Mandell Foundation. Seth and Sherri

Mandell moved to Israel from America in 1996 because “they loved Israel and wanted to put Judaism in the center of their lives and their children’s lives”. Their lives were devastated on May 8, 2001, when their 13-yearold son Koby was murdered by terrorists. Koby went hiking with his friend, Yosef Ish Ran, in a canyon near the Mandell’s home. There, in a cave, Arabs who chanced upon the boys stoned them both to death. The Mandells, parents to three other younger children, knew that in order to go on, they needed to transform the cruelty of Koby’s death into acts of kindness and hope. For that reason, they created the Koby Mandell Foundation which provides healing programs for families struck by terrorism. Seth, a rabbi, and Sherri, an author and journalist, believe that the Jewish response to suffering is to live a fuller and more engaged life. Their programs help others who have suffered the trauma of loss overcome the isolation that keeps them from returning to life. Participants are helped to find

meaning in their loss, so that families become stronger rather than weaker from their traumas. In this way, they keep Koby’s spirit alive in the world. On one of the days when we were walking and talking with Seth, he asked me where I went to school. I answered that I am in 8th grade at Yeshivat Shaalvim. When Seth heard this, the expression on his face immediately changed. “Shaalvim…that is where Koby was going to learn,” he said. He then began telling us stories about Koby, making us laugh and cry at the same time. I couldn’t help but think about Koby as we walked. He was my age and just walking around and this terrible thing happened to him. Thinking about him made the walk more meaningful. I thought about how important it is to remember him and all victims of terror. I was also amazed at how the Mandells were able to move on and instead of taking it as only a bad thing they are also using it to do great stuff…and I got to spend three great days with my mom.
