Designer, actress. home-renovator, gardener, crafter and quilter, Maureen McCormick is a maker and creative spirit whose love of retro-style infuses her fabrics. While you might know her from her years as Marcia Brady on The Brady Bunch, she grew up loving quilts and the family connections they represent. A Blooming Bunch colors funky flowers and prints with an updated-retro palette to create a collection that has a distinctive modern and kind of groovy feel. "Here's my story... what I love about the 70s style is that it feels very chic, fun, happy, flowery and breezy, and it puts a smile on my face. It makes us feel good because it takes us back to a simpler time, to the simple pleasures that are near and dear to my heart. Rummaging around flea markets is definitely one of my all-time favorite activities. Sometimes you get lucky and the hunt yields something truly priceless… like this 1930s vintage quilt. It was calling my name! There are so many perfect prints that needed to be brought back to life after almost 100 years-with a bit of Fig Tree style. I would like to introduce them to you as Figs & Shirtings – prints that make you think of grandma’s aprons, laundry hanging on the line, vintage men’s pajamas, and flour sacks. Sunflowers feel like such an expression of optimism and reaching for the bright side. Those giant flower heads, full of seeds, grow tall and proud and strong. When I created the artwork for this collection, I didn’t know how much I would need to be reminded to keep looking to the sun, just as sunflowers do. Solana includes two wall panels with favorite quotes, each of which is a yard of fabric. They can be framed as wall art, quilted for a simple wall quilt, or finished with blocks and borders for a larger quilt. My wish is that you will follow Helen Keller’s words, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what sunflowers do.”

Ahhh… Winkipop. How I love thee! The prints and palette for this range were inspired by photographs of our local beach taken by Romy, a photographer based here in Victoria. Winkipop is one of my favorites – the colours wash together with the waves. The cliff face reflects the setting sun, and mix with the summer grasses and wintery clouds. They’re all a reminder of the spectacular place I call home – Australia’s surf coast. How lucky I am.

I love living where we can enjoy the changing of the four seasons. Just as I'm growing weary of cold, snowy days curled up in a quilt, the days start to grow longer and I spy tulips peeking through the mulch. Spring gardening, outdoor DIY projects, and evenings on the porch with a glass of iced tea are relished as they will soon pass into much warmer weather. The summer brings more time with our grandkids, trips to the pool and hot afternoons spent sewing in the cool relief of the A/C. And just when the heat starts to seem endless, the evenings cool and we welcome the return of bonfires, pumpkin picking, and star-gazing. We rake leaves, put the garden to bed, stock up on cocoa and snuggle in for winter. Each season gifts us with it's own theme. The certainty of the cycle grounds and inspires me - I love my life here on Bittersweet Lane.

Elinore Pruitt Stewart was born in 1876 in the Indian Territory of what is now Oklahoma. Having raised her siblings after her parents died, she married, only to be widowed before her daughter was born. After moving to Denver, she went to work for Henry Clyde Stewart of Wyoming, writing letters of daily life and events on a homestead that were published in Atlantic Monthly, and then as a book, Letters from a Woman Homesteader. Elinore eventually married Mr. Stewart, had more children, and continued to write letters that sincerely and frankly recorded the rigors of daily homestead life and the happy events shared with neighbors. The endeavors of this independent, hard working woman serve as the inspiration for Elinore’s Endeavor, a line that combines beautiful florals with sweet prints.

Zarafa tells the story of a famous female Masai giraffe gifted to King Charles X of France in 1826 by Muhammed Ali of Egypt. Long thought to be imaginary figures similar to unicorns and dragons, Zarafa was one of the first giraffes to be seen in Europe and she quickly became a sensation. Living in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris for 18 years, she influenced contemporary fashion, decor and fabrics. An Indian Block Printed quilt dating to the 1830s is highlighted by a drawing of Zarafa and Atir, her handler. The quilt is a strippy pattern depicting decorative birds with exotic tail feathers, Chinese pagodas, nesting birds and a flying bird with a fish in his mouth.
