Jackie MacDonald is Creating a "Home and Heart Brand" with Sweetfire Road Jackie, a self-described “Virginia girl” who grew up in a close family, didn’t have a chance to get to know her grandmother Marian, who passed before she was born. Instead, she learned about her grandmother through her charm bracelet. “That charm bracelet was a way to know my grandmother’s story,” Jackie says. Just like each of the charms on that bracelet are symbols that tell her grandmother’s story, Jackie weaves symbolism and iconography in her fabric collections to give quilters and sewists the chance to tell their own stories through her fabrics. Jackie’s story begins with her love and appreciation of domestic arts, even as a child. “My paternal grandmother, Margaret, was a ‘fabric and domestics’ lady at the local department store,” she says, and brought home fabric swatches for Jackie to play with. In college, Jackie majored in home economics. "It helped me learn ways of being self-sufficient and creative.” Her professional career began with stints working in merchandising for furnishing and home goods catalogs before transitioning into product design. After moving with her husband and young son from Virginia to Maine, though, she switched gears and started her own design business – Sweetfire Road. “I wanted to create art that took you on a journey home,” she says, explaining the genesis of Sweetfire Road. “’Sweet’ comes from my mom and grandmother always

leading with love and kindness – I wanted to honor that. And ‘fire’ represents creating art with passion.”
Evoking an Experience Throughout her life and career, Jackie has sought to connect with people and evoke an experience – for others and for herself. She began sewing by making pillows, curtains, and bedspreads out of a desire to create a warm and welcoming home. “[Sewing] let me create a home that expressed ‘me’ even when my job didn’t.” But it was a surface design immersion course that spurred Jackie to start designing fabrics that let quilters evoke experiences of their own through her designs. “Fabric design saved me,” she says, describing the process as “product development the way I dream it should be.”
Starting With a Story “A story provides the backbone for a cohesive collection,” according to Jackie. When it came time to design Enchantment, “I had been watching way too many Jane Austen movies!” she laughs. Jackie loved how Austen’s heroines found creative, unspoken ways to express themselves and became fascinated by the hidden meaning of things, especially the secret language of flowers that was so popular in Edwardian and Victorian culture. With Enchantment, “I imagine our heroine taking notes about her garden,” Jackie says. “For the bouquets in Enchantment’s focus floral print, I chose to draw flowers with specific meanings.” The supporting prints in the Enchantment collection continue the romantic theme. Paper Butterflies is a nod to lacy Victorian valentines, while Diary Keys depicts ornate keys that reference locking away treasured secrets. “Winged Messenger is my favorite print from Enchantment,” Jackie says proudly. “It’s something that that I’ve been wanting to draw since I first started designing.”
Just like the story creates the foundation for Jackie’s collections, it also informs the color palette she chooses. “I’m obsessed with color!” she chuckles. “I find color combos that I love and keep notes on them,” explaining that she’ll pull from those saved combinations when she’s developing each collection.
Creating Connections With Enchantment, Jackie hopes to give quilters a language in fabric to tell their own unique stories. “I would love to see people feeling like they can embellish my fabrics and try new things – like adding bits of lace to their quilt blocks, like I did for one of my Blockheads blocks, or fussy cutting the prints to pull out things that have meaning to them,” Jackie says, adding that seeing her fabrics used in quilts and sewing projects “tickles me to bits! Floribunda is a fabric line that celebrates the abundant beauty of autumn. There is nothing more refreshing than the crisp, fresh fall air. The leaves turning a riot of bright jeweltoned colors enlivens the spirit and leaves me feeling truly grateful for this beautiful world we live in. I mixed up a custom color palette full of rich, luscious tones and set about painting some fall florals, leaves like the ones you would find on the ground during a chilly fall walk, funky sunflower seeds, vintage knitted patterns, and stripes like you wore to school as a kid under your overalls back in the day. I am a denim kind of gal all the way and wear jeans pretty much every day of my life. Mixing the denim “vibe” into a collection has long been on my design wishlist, and once I started mixing it up with my favorite orange and butterscotch colors, I knew I had discovered the perfect grouping of soft and strong. There is something about the utility of denim and strong blues with the warm, homey colors of tans, oranges, and butterscotch that makes it such a favorite combination for so many of us. I envision everyday decorating quilts and utility quilts to “use up” as well as beautiful heirloom two-color quilts. I cannot wait to see what you create with Denim & Daisies!

GREAT WAYS TO USE YOUR DENIM PRINTED “PATCHWORK” One of the things that inspired my DENIM & DAISIES collection, was a vintage patchwork like the one you see pictured here. I knew it would make such a great pre-printed patchwork for you to play with! I am beyond excited to show you all the ways you can use it to make beautiful things! -Joanna This patchwork makes an absolutely perfect quilt backing in both colors, it is also a wonderful patchwork to use for so many different projects as it is SO VERSATILE…. Shown are (4) different bag patterns that were all made with nothing but the patchwork! Just quilt the panel [all done on our machine at home] and assemble ANY bag pattern using the quilted fabric. One yard creates all the bags shown & more. Even more simple is the patchwork simply quilted up with a long arm panto as a simple throw that looks SO REAL -OR- with the addition of simple scallops on just the top and bottom of the quilt. The Fig Tree blog will have tutorials for both of these throws.

One of my favorite parts of our homeschool journey was reading aloud to our boys. We read all sorts of literature together, and while they all sparked wonderful conversation, one that sticks out to me is Aesop’s Fables. With lessons to be learned, we would quickly know what role a fox, crow, hare, owl, and more might play in these short stories. We enjoyed how folklore and fables humanized animals to teach us a lesson. So, from times past (and with a modern bend), Folk & Lore takes a lighthearted approach to the art of traditions and stories passed down. You’ll find scandi- and folk-art inspired florals, a nod to block printing, and you’ll walk in a forest of animal friends. You’ll toss some leaves in the air while still enjoying some of the classics. Both the warm and cool palettes in this collection play off each other nicely, and I hope you love creating with Folk & Lore!

New Designer! Having worked commercially as a watercolor artist, painting and play have always been intertwined — until they became less so. I had painted so many subjects that I needed an outlet. And so, while client projects dried, I’d wander onto scrap papers and boards to unwind. What I now call “watercolor playgrounds” quickly became a regular creative practice. Creating forms with loose watercolor bleeds, painting organic shapes, and playing with movement lit my heart! It’s like mounting building blocks in layers of color. It feels like touching a place my imagination paints. And the final look echoes back to me: there is more. Vibrant colors mingle to become is a watercolor playground — ready to jump into! This art feels so true to me, and I am so proud to have it as my debut as a Moda designer!

I love the graphic impact and simplicity of two-color vintage quilts, so creating a similar collection has been on my fabric bucket list. True blacks, tan with black prints, and lots of warm tan tone-ontone fabrics all come together to make a cohesive line perfect for simple yet dramatic results. Blackbird’s Nest was inspired not only by my love of vintage quilts, but also by the numerous nests in the huge cottonwood tree outside my studio window. My grandkids and I enjoy watching the mama birds feeding their young as they swoop from the tree to the feeder and back again. When we found a nest that had been blown out of the tree during a storm, our 2-year-old great-granddaughter insisted we put it back so “the babies can find their home.” I love that by making quilts, we make our nests a little more cozy, too.

One of the blessings of designing fabric is when and where the inspiration is found. For this collection, my inspiration is from my mom, Georgia.

When I began quilting, Mom and I created a quilt together. She did embroidery squares and I designed the blocks and layout. One of the first decisions was what colors we were going to use, and I asked her what were her favorite colors when she was growing up. She didn’t have just one, but she quickly answered that she had always loved lavender, soft green, and a little bit of yellow. That immediately became the colors we used in the quilt we made together. (I still have and treasure that quilt to this day!) A soothing, cool shade of lavender, soft green, a touch of butter yellow, a grounding pebble hue, and, of course, a soft white are featured in my Georgia collection, where vintage florals, basketweaves, small floral accents, and a sweet floral stripe create a classic vintage feel. (Also, as a part of this Georgia collection, I am re-releasing a very special quilt called “Remember ‘Whoo’ Loves You,” created to share the love my mom had for all the grand-littles she never got to meet.)

Both of my parents were professional musicians, so it should be no surprise that our holidays were filled with carols and song. One of our favorites was The Twelve Days of Christmas. Our main goal while designing On Dasher was to create a Christmas collection that was lighthearted and fun. What’s more fun than a reindeer? While we could have named the collection after another more famous reindeer, we thought we would put the spotlight on the first name that Santa calls on Christmas Eve. On Dasher is created with the traditional colors of red and green, with just a touch of icy blue. There are a few Christmas-themed prints in the line that are coupled with several blenders that can be used with any project. We hope you have as much fun creating with On Dasher as we did designing the collection.

Be a Blockhead With Us! Our much-loved, annual block-of-theweek program is bigger than ever! What started as a way to spotlight Moda’s traditional designers has grown into an annual program that engages thousands of quilters every week. The original Blockheads series featured six designers; for Blockheads 5, more than 30 Moda designers are contributing block designs! Every Wednesday on the Moda blog and in our official Moda Blockheads Facebook group, we reveal a new block and provide links to the designer’s blog and social media channels. The designers always have their own post dedicated to their block, filled with
great tips on choosing and placing fabrics, block construction, and more. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Moda designers and new piecing techniques. This year, we’ve broken the program into two sessions: The first group just wrapped up in November. The second group will kick off on January 3, 2024 and run through July 31, 2024.
