Grand Haven: Laurie Simpson's Sweet Farewell

Laurie Simpson is a quilter extraordinaire. The patterns she creates under the Minick & Simpson name include intricate piecing, appliqué, and the occasional touch of whimsy. Many involve handwork and hundreds of pieces of fabric, and Laurie often hand quilts the finished product.

Her start in quilting, however, was more modest. “I was maybe 13 or 14 and saw a quilt in Women’s Day magazine that I thought was pretty neat,” she remembers. No one in her family sewed, so Laurie bought small quantities of fabric and taught herself to handpiece blocks. “I was just a kid and then a poor student,” she says. “So it wasn’t until I was in my 30s that I got my first machine, a Featherweight.”

In addition to her richly detailed patterns, she’s known for the 65 lines of fabric she’s designed for Moda, more than 40 of them with her sister Polly Minick. Their connection with Moda came in 2003 when Polly called to buy five yards of ticking fabric. She learned that Moda only sells to wholesale accounts, but her call was passed along to Moda’s thendesign director, Cheryl Freydberg. A Country Home magazine story featuring Polly’s home had introduced Cheryl to Polly’s style, and she asked Polly if she’d like to design a line of wool. Polly, an experienced rug hooker, admittedly couldn’t sew on a button and called Laurie, her quilting sister, to see if it was an idea worth considering. Laurie excitedly said yes, and the design team was born. Polly retired in 2018 and Laurie has continued to design fabric, including her newest line, Grand Haven.

A Day at the Beach

Minick & Simpson fabric lines are inspired by vintage textiles, and Grand Haven is no exception. “The red, white, and blue collections are light, happy, and summery and summer makes me think of beaches and cottages,” says Laurie. “I’m reminded of all the great beach towns here in Michigan—many of the collections have Michigan place names. Grand Haven will be the last one.”

Yes, you heard that right. Laurie is retiring from fabric design. “Moda has been been so supportive and I felt so appreciated,” she says. “I’ve also come to appreciate what a nice guy Mr. Dunn is. I’m so fortunate to be working with them.”

Though designing patterns and fabric will be a thing of the past, she won’t be leaving the world of textiles behind. In response to demand from the customers Polly acquired

through 28 years of selling antiques in New York, Nantucket, and through Ralph Lauren, Laurie will sell her one-of-a-kind quilts and Polly her hand-hooked rugs via the Minick & Simpson website. (The Minick & Simpson Etsy shop will continue to sell patterns.)

We appreciate the beauty and pleasure that sewing with Minick & Simpson’s beautiful fabrics brings to our lives, and we’re grateful for the many times we’ve been wowed by one of Laurie’s masterful quilts. We wish her well as she finds more time for travel, reading, and dog walking, some of the activities she intends to pursue in retirement.

“And of course I’ll still make quilts,” says Laurie. “It’s who I am. It’s what I do.”

Over 15 years ago, Moda asked us to design a collection of French-inspired prints, filled with the old reds and neutrals that were popular in France in the 18th and 19th centunes. We called our first fabric collection Rouenneries and it is, still to this day, one of our favorites. Since then, we designed Rouenneries Deux and in September 2024, we are excited to release Rouenneries Trois — the third in a series of antique florals and small prints in a traditional French palette.

We hope you enjoy this classic reinterpretation of a favorite collection from French General.

As a child, I loved gathering flowers among the tall grass on our family’s farm. Wild daisies were bountiful in shades of white to yellow and gold. Counting to see who had the most petals on a single flower and playing “Loves Me, Loves Me Not” was a perennial favorite.

My Daisy Lane collection brings back fond memories of childhood and the anticipation of sharing this special time with our grandkids as the fields bloom in the spring.

CONTEST DETAILS

For 50 years, Moda has been a leader and trusted name in the quilting industry – producing quality quilting fabrics with sought-after, talented designers; developing and distributing innovative products that improve the quilting experience; supporting quilt retailers of all sizes across the country and even the world; and inspiring and educating quilters to continue this vibrant and history-rich traditional craft.

We’re celebrating and commemorating 50 Years of Moda with a one-of-a-kind, retrospective fabric collection and quilt contest!

Use the “Celebrating 50 Years of Moda” collection to create a quilt in one of three categories:

PIECED QUILT – Use traditional piecing methods in an original design

ART QUILT – Your original design can feature traditional and/or modern techniques, including 3D accents, applique, foundation paper piecing, etc.

NEXT GENERATION QUILTER – Youth category; maker must be 17 years old or younger.

All quilts must be at least 60” square and no larger than 85” x 90”. At least 75% of the quilt top must be made with the Celebrating 50 Years of Moda collection. One hundred percent of the quilt top, backing, and binding must be made with Moda fabrics.

Prize Awards for each category:

*First Place – $2,500

*Second Place – $1,000

*Third Place – One Moda fat quarter bundle a month for a year

All entries must be received by March 1, 2025.

The inspiration for this collection was a big bouquet of garden flowers, collected in the early fall when everything is at its peak. Katharine used dahlias, zinnias, fennel, feverfew, and more collected from her own garden as the source material for an original linocut print. These patterns were based off the original linocuts and capture the abundance of a garden at the end of the growing season.

Those early mornings spent walking the shoreline in search of seashells were accompanied by salty air and a beautiful sunrise. Early morning at the ocean illuminates the water as the sky bursts with radiant hues. Our Laguna Sunrise collection reminds us of days shared driving down the coast, shorelines and shells, wildflowers blowing in the breeze, and the vibrant colors of vintage beach cottages and flowers.

Perhaps a result of a lifetime of living in the mountains and the desert, it’s always been a dream of mine to build a little cottage near the ocean. There’s just something about the salty air, the weathered cedar shingles, and beautiful climbing flowers and vines that will always have my heart. And in true east coast tradition, I even know what I would name her. Rosemary Cottage.

Longshore combines my fascination with maps and all things coastal with my wanderlust to explore and see more of the world. You just can’t beat the thrill of being somewhere new (even if it’s just a few miles away from home) and seeing everything with fresh eyes and inspiring energy.
