Panel Discussion 1

The Panelists in this panel discussion were Kumardeep Banerjee, Head External Communications -- Vodafone India; Sharad Shrivastava, Pincoy Singapore and Founder & Director of Dstor Technologies Pvt Ltd; Bhupesh Raseen, Chairman Mobile Advisory Committee – TMA and board member of Ghana India Trade Advisory Chamber (GITAC) ; Dev Kumar, CTO-VOIC Networks and Mr. Manu Seth Managing Director Ibrit Asia The panel discussion were moderated by Ushma Tyagi.

M

oderator: Nearly two years have passed after Make in India has been launched. Can you throw some light on the progress we have made on this front? Mr. Bhupesh Raseen: Make in India is getting a lot of hiccups. People have started with assembling, but now government, assuming that we have reached mature level of CKD, has started imposing duties on SKDs, even before a proper ecosystem has evolved. This is putting domestic manufacturers who depend on importing SKDs at odds. Another big hindrance Make in India is facing is for to assemble one mobile phone model, now you need 5 or 6 BIS certifications. Each year the government is increasing the number of imported items that comes under the gamut of import Mr. Bhupesh Raseen, duties. This is putting the Indian Chairman–mobile Advisory Committee, brands at a great disadvantage because most of them currently Tma depend on imports. Another issue that is plaguing the mobility industry is allowing 100% FDI in manufacturing in India, which is pushing domestic brands to a corner. Government is implementing PMP without creating the necessary infrastructure and ecosystem. Brands which invested thousands of crores of rupees to Make in India are now closing down and employees are on the roads after losing their jobs. The government should change the policies, if it really wants to Make in India a success. We need infrastructure before going to CKD.

Mobility January 2019

Mr. Dev Kumar: Currently, one issue with Make in India is manufacturers have set up several SMT lines anticipating lot of work, but most of them are idle. There is no efficient certification process in place. Make in India will be successful only when we can increase the manufacturing efficiency. Moderator: Today, everyone talking about 5G and the related opportunities. Can we know the experts opinion on this matter? Mr. Manu Seth: Today, mobile phones have become a commodity; several features unimaginable on smartphones a decade back have become common things now. Mobile phone today is a necessity, no longer an option or a luxury. Change is the only that is constant in today’s mobile world. The 5G is still in the testing stage and it is going to take a year or more before it reaches to consumers. IoT and Virtual Reality are going to be the next big things in the Mr. Manu Seth mobile world. In terms of features, Managing Director Ibrit Asia functionalities and capabilities the future smartphones will be enormous devices. I think 5G will be a double-edged sword but it needs a whole lot of things before it becomes useful. Mr. Kumardeep Banerjee: The 5G will be the next big thing, but it will take at least a year or more. Next frontier will be IoT and driverless cars, but we need to gear up our ecosystem, before these things become practical. The M2M communications and ecommerce

will expand further. We now hear even remote robotic surgeries taking on patient with doctor operating from a distance of 5000 km. But the question remains how far are we ready to accommodate t h e s ec h a n g e s — f o r instance, we cannot imagine of launching the driverless Mr. Kumardeep Banerjee cards on Delhi roads. They Head External need a completely different Communications Vodafone India kind of roads a whole lot of things such a s compliances, architectures, governance models, etc, before we can employ them and make most of 5G. We need to have clear timelines and objectives. Moderator: What role storage is going to play in the domain of mobile phones? Mr. Sharad Shrivastava: People often think they have a big storage on their mobile phones, only until they suddenly realized they have finished their data. Our portable Pincoy Wallet SSDs offer 120 to 480 GB of storage space on a small pocket-fit devices and this is a step forward to help the mobile users to enjoy big storage backup whether at home or on-the-go, particularly when they at such locations where there is no mobile connectivity. Moderator : What is the best way to save and secure data? Mr. Sharad Shrivastava: Just like money, your data is safe only as long as it is with you. As long as your money on data are on a third party platform, they are still a step behind to be called your own. Now it has become an issue even how to save and protect multiple number of User IDs and passwords. Your money and data are just as safe as your User IDs and passwords. Not only human intruders, even Mr. Sharad Srivastava viruses which are software ( Pincoy Singapore) Founder Dstor entities can intrude into your Technologies Pte Ltd devices steal or destroy your data. This highlights the importance to secure your data on something that is under your possession. Mr. Dev Kumar: Now, we are focusing on security in different places including mobiles, video conferencing, smart cities, etc. We are aiming at meeting the needs of industry 4.0. Here the most important thing is data speed and continuity. We have to ensure good data speed for a video conference to be comfortable and effective. Moderator: What innovations and developments can we see in the coming years in the mobiles area? Mr. Manu Seth: Talking about the opportunities,

Mobility January 2019

today, the convergence of data, video and audio is taking place at a rapid pace. Education and health have become focus segments. Today, things are happening faster and everything is going mobile and smart—there are going to be smart energy meters, smart water meters, smart tables, etc. As the economy grows, usage of these smart devices will grow further. Mr. Dev Kumar: Another thing we have to understand is for activities such as remote operations of patients 1000s of kilometers away, they are not depending on telecom service providers. They are depending on their direct communications systems that are more reliable than the services provided be telecom operators. Our focus is on how to automate activities, minimize human intervention and Mr. Dev Kumar how to increase efficiency and Cto, Voic Networks connectivity. Mr. Bhupesh Raseen: Our governments often copy policies made in other countries. We need to press the government to amend policies to meet the interests of the industry based on our domestic conditions. Governments are taking a lot of time to change policies and as a result many domestic companies are suffering. The 5G cannot be successful unless our experience with 2G, 3G and 4G are taken into account before planning how to use 5G. We should note that 40% of the people are still using feature phones and 2G is still used by many users. Summary Opportunities in the evolving mobile landscape are enormous but challenges too are enormous. Our Make in India program is limping at the stage of assembling and screwdriver shops, due to lack of infrastructure, proper ecosystem, logjam of certification process and out-ofplace government policies. Due to lack of pragmatic approach from the government and the invasion of 100% FDI, many entrepreneurs who invested 1000s of crores of rupees under Make in India are now forced to close down their plants, besides leaving several more 1000s of employees jobless. To make Make in India successful, government should follow more pragmatic approach to draft policies that meet the interests of the industry unique to the Indian conditions. 5G and IoT, smart homes and smart cities are going to be the next big things, but there questions on how much the poorly placed Indian ecosystem can adopt and adapt to the new developments. For instance, we cannot imagine have driverless cars on the Indian roads. We have a long way before we can evolve to the level of incorporating these changes. Indian government should focus on developing rules and policies that will suit the Indian conditions to take the mobility industry and country to the next level.

Panel Discussion 2

The panelists of this discussion were Prof N K Goyal, President CMAI Association of India, Chairman Emeritus TEMA; Mr. Saurav Bhattacharya, AIMDA; Mr. Gaurav Kanodia, AIMDA; Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Mumbai Association and Mr.Vinay Dixit of Kolkata Mobile Retailers Welfare Association. The discussion were moderated by Mr.Swapan Roy & Ms.Ushma Tyagi.

M

oderator: I request the panelists to throw light on how the mobile industry channel associations are playing the leading role while resolving the issues of the channel partners. Prof NK Goyal: To start with, we would like to thank the Mobility Magazine for giving us this opportunity speak on this panel to articulate our views and also the audience who are here to listen to us and share their views. As an association, our aim is to try our best to resolve the issues related to the Prof N K Goyal partners of the mobile industry by President Cmai representing them and negotiating Association Of with the mobile vendors regarding India, Chairman their channel policy related to Emeritus Tema margins and online vs offline issues. We also try our best to plead with the government to make policy changes in favor of the channel. We always cheerfully receive delegations from the mobility industry that come to us seeking solutions to their issues. Mr. Saurav Bhattacharya : AIMDA (All India Mobile Distributors Association) represents the voices of the distributors of the mobile industry and also the voices of different state, regional and city level mobile associations while negotiating with the government and with the mobile industry vendors. The aim of AIMDA is to create an ecosystem and a level playing field where distributors and vendors can work together in a Mr. Saurav way that will place all in a Win-Win Bhattacharya Ktda And Amida situation. Many fly-by-night mobile vendors are entering the industry and then are suddenly closing down their companies. Today, mobile industry is facing unique problems, for example, when companies are closed

Mobility January 2019

down, the customers still go to the distributors for service and warranty. Under such circumstances, the burden falls on the distributors to clear the already existing stocks of the vendor who had wound up, besides dealing with the warranty and service issues of the customers who have already purchased the goods. When vendors wind up, distributors are bearing brunt. So we want to sort out such issues. Next issue is the offline mobile distributors usually have a margin of just 2%, but huge discounts given by etailers are killing the offline channel. Now, survival has become the main issue for most mobile distributors and retailers. Mr. Gaurav Kanodia, : AIMDA Today, within one month of its launch on Dec 5, 2018, AIMDA has over 1600 members and the number is growing fast. It shows the zeal of the industry players to work together towards achieving solutions using a common platform. We are excited by the response and encouragement we have been getting. Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Mobile Distributors Association Mumbai : I am from MMDA (Mumbai Mobile Distributors Association). One issue the distributors faced is some vendors have been changing or shuffling distributors very fast. This puts distributors already signed up with them having the old stocks Mr. Mukesh in a difficult position. We want to Gupta represent the problems faced by such Mumbai Mobile distributors. Distributor Mr. Swapan Roy : Today, online Association competition has become a big problem for the offline distributors threatening their very survival. Please tell us how the associations are dealing with this sensitive issue? Prof NK Goyal: We are trying to link up with all the different mobile associations, including some international associations. Our aim is to ensure the

14

Panel Discussion 2

better survival of the businesses of the members and create an ecosystem where everyone can play safe and there will be fair competition between online and offline channels. Our focus is also on the issues like how to improve the market access for the distributors to improve their profitability besides dealing with the immediate issues such as unfair disruption caused by the online channels to the offline channels. Mr. Mukesh Gupta : Online portals are literally killing the offline distributors and 1000s of mobile outlets spread across the country are threatened by closure. Mr.Vinay Dixit of Kolkata Mobile Retailers Welfare Association: There are a lot of challenges facing the mobile distributors in India today. We should bring pressure on the brands to maintain price parity between the models they simultaneously launch online and offline. Now even online portals like Amazon have started appointing sub-distributors further Mr. Vinay Dixit complicating the situation for offline distributors. Cash on delivery has Kolkata Mobile Retailers Welfare become very attractive to the people nowadays and this is attracting Association the customers more towards online portals, particularly for the smaller-amount purchases. Mr. Saurav , AIMDA : It has become a chicken and egg issue—without chicken there can’t be eggs and without eggs there can be chicken. Now, we want to approach vendors how offline channel can offer them better reach to the market over long-term. For this, we should work hard, work united and convince the vendors how the offline channel is better than online channel, though we cannot completely replace online channel. Mr.Vinay Dixit: Another issue is some vendors launch a model online at a price and then they launch the same model at a higher price offline. Then customers will compare the two prices and then they think offline price is higher. Then customers think the offline is cheating with higher prices. This is putting offline outlets at an awkward and disadvantageous position. Mr. Saurav Bhattacharya: Only way we can face online challenge is fighting as a united front; we should stick to our margins and should not climb down. We should deal only with pull-brands, not push-brands. Unity should be our strength. The distributors associations should work closely work with retailers associations to successfully achieve the common goals. Mr. Swapan Roy : As an association, what is your strategy to deal with issues faced by the distributors and consumers? Mr. Mukesh Gupta : In the current scenario where brands are entering and exiting, we should do our best to bring pressure on the government to some guidelines to the vendors to launch new products bring in FDI to ensure protection for the distributors and the customers. Govt policy should ensure that the ecosystem is not upset and distributors and retailers will enjoy some degree of safety and security. Mr. Gaurav, AIMDA : Brands come with big claims which are often empty. Government should check the background of the brands before giving them permission. Foreign brands coming to India count 2% as service costs

Mobility January 2019

which is below the required level, but the government should insist that their service budget should be 4% to keep the channel partners and the consumers protected. A foreign brand should seek NOC before launching fulfilling basic T&C and requirements. Also foreign brands should be asked to deposit some security amount so that they do not close overnight and vanish.

Mr. Gaurav Kanodia All India Mobile Distribution Association (amida)

Mr. Mukesh Gupta, Mobile Association Mumbai : For instance, in many cases retailers are purchasing products via online channels at lower prices and then selling them in their shops. This practice only encourages online channels. We are formulating an NOC policy with several checkpoints that need to be met by the new brands before they are given NOC. As one of the conditions, the foreign vendors should have stock transfer arrangement to which they must stick to when they want to wind up. For example, I remember a recent instance when the offline channel refused to sell the products of a big brand unless they change their online policy. Then the brand came down within two weeks to negotiate with the offline channel, listened to their concerns, and then changed their policies in favor of the offline channel. That is the strength of unity. If we want the brands to listen to us, we should be united, determined and firm. Mr.Swapan Roy: Indian brands are suffering; how the associations can protect them. Mr. Saurav Bhattacharya, AIMD : Mr. Swapan Roy At the end of the day it is the consumers Founder, CEO & Editorial Director, are the choice makers. Indian brands Roy Mediative also should give value to the users such as good features and functions comparable to the foreign brands. Now let us work together with the Indian brands to reorganize the market that will ensure protection to everyone. Conclusion Unfair competition from the online channels is pushing the many offline players to the brink of extinction. Associations are striving their best to bring pressure on the brands to maintain price parity between the products where the same models are launched online and offline. Next issue is when brands enter and leave the market, they should make their obligations binding regarding service and warranty instead of leaving that burden to be borne by the distributors and the retailers. Next, government should have a mechanism to rate the reliability, viability and trustworthiness of a brand, before giving them NOC to enter the Indian market. Last but not the least all the associations and their members should work in unison to protect the interests of the channel partners and create a level playing ecosystem—Strength lies in Unity.
