Make in India entrepreneurs, who still depend on import of components, are unable to compete with the foreign players due to government’s lack of support regarding import duties.

Industry in general, and IT and telecom segments in particular, are highly sensitive to the government regulations and the budget provisions. The industry has been looking eagerly to the budget announcement. And now we have it here. In this story we included the reactions and comments of some of the prominent industry executives.

Nipun Marya, Director - Brand Strategy,

“The relief for salaried class through rebates and increase in the standard deduction amount is a welcome news for the mobile industry as consumers will have more income in hand which would boost mobile sales.”

Mr Rajesh Agarwal, Co-Founder,

Micromax

“We, at Micromax, respect and welcome the government’s budget reforms. This year’s Budget has brought significant changes, focusing on various key aspects which are largely stressed upon our overall economic growth in terms of rural, agriculture, job creation, healthcare, housing, structural reforms and infrastructure development, which will help stimulate and strengthen the

Indian economy. The emphasis on establishing a program to bring in direct efforts towards building a holistic ecosystem for Artificial Intelligence is an impressive development. The government’s proposal of giving a full tax rebate to individual taxpayers with an income of up to 5 lakh will empower the Indian consumer. Moreover, the government’s announcement around expanding Common Service Centres and creating digital infrastructure in the villages will be a significant step in the Digital India mission and growth of the Make in India initiative. With India leading the consumption of voice calls and mobile data usage, it is fascinating to note our constant progression towards becoming a global hub for manufacturing.”

Mr Manish Sharma, President and

CEO, Panasonic India; Co-chair, Electronics Committee, FICCI “It is great to see that the interim budget is aimed at strengthening India’s backbone, i.e. farmers, middleclass (salaried personnel) and the elderly citizens of our society. Not only will it give them the extra income but also drive consumption for the industry.

However, in the final budget we expect an exemption of basic customs duty on open cells (from 5% to 0%) to give the necessary thrust to the market, uplifting the overall sentiments thereby, resulting in an increased demand for Televisions (TVs). Further, it will help pave way for a larger roadmap for component-manufacturing ecosystem to be achieved through a phased manufacturing program (PMP) for TVs, which in turn will help reinforce GoI’s larger, Make-in-India vision. TVs today, have moved from being an item of luxury to one of our necessities, hence, its affordability is a key. Therefore, in order to drive further penetration whilst progressing towards a manufacturing based economy, we urge GoI to lower the GST slabs for TVs (above 26 inches) and other energy efficient appliances.”

Neeraj Sharma, Country Head – UNISOC

India (formerly Spreadtrum Communications) “The interim budget 2019 carries strong markers of the success of the digital revolution in India, further paving the way for India to emerge as the digital economy in times to come. As announced by the interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, India presently leads the world in the consumption of mobile data, which has grown 50X in the last 5 years. Owing to Make in India, the number of mobile and parts manufacturing companies have also grown from a mere 2 to 268, creating enough jobs in the economy. The government further aims to support the leading technologies like AI by developing a National Artificial Intelligence portal and has set its eyes on achieving one lakh digital villages in the next 5 years. This serves as a strong growth impetus, with the next wave of digitalization belonging to the hinterlands of India. Driven to transform mobile communication, we at UNISOC look forward to supporting manufacturing products that will enable this next wave of digital revolution in India.”

Mr Sumeer Chandra, MD, HP Inc India “The focus on leveraging emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence to enable a positive impact on the lives of people is an encouraging step. Further, the expansion of rural industrialization using digital technologies, development of clusters encompassing the MSMEs, village industries and start-ups, will boost rural manufacturing, job creation and strengthen the overall economy. We appreciate the government’s budget focus on empowering the middle class and the rural population. Initiatives such as monetary support for farmers and higher exemption limit in personal income tax slab would provide higher disposable income, thereby, leading to higher spending. I believe, this will lead to consumption growth, giving impetus to overall economy.”

Mr Carl Ngo Co-founder and CEO of Mobiistar, India and Global “The Budget 2019 is certainly progrowth and will increase the purchasing power of the Indian Middle Class. It is heartening to see that the government recognizes the poignant role of digital technology in India’s evolution to a five-trillion dollar economy over the next five years. Announcement around national scheme on Artificial intelligence is a welcome move and will give an impetus to the technology ecosystem in India. With focus on development, it is a progressive budget and will be a next big leap in India’s growth story. The delivery however will be contingent on effective implementation of these policies.”

Mr Manoj Kumar Pansari, CMD, Astrum “From tax-break for middle class to schemes for farmers, even unorganized sector employees and small business got benefitted in this interim budget. What this budget is missing is the mention of manufacturing plants which have been mushrooming in the recent past in India. Hopefully we will see something on manufacturing plants in the actual budget. However, overall this budget is praiseworthy.”

Mr Yogesh Bhatia, MD, Detel “Budget 2019 looks really optimistic. With GOI taking major step towards Digital Villages, it opens new opportunities for the Consumer Electronic brands especially in TV segment. This rejig will increase the TV penetration in Rural India, hence strengthening our focus of ‘HAR GHAR T V ’ u n d e r #connecting40croreindians.”

Mr. Ashwin Bhandari, CEO, iVOOMi, a

Chinese Electronics Player, on Budget Impact on smartphone industry “Focus on digital India in the budget and vision of creating 1 lac digital villages will empower the real India and fuel overall growth in the economy and will bring comprehensive growth for the industries. Declaration of schemes for incentives for SMEs and start-ups is a welcome move to enable small businesses that in turn will support services to different businesses, which should promote smaller manufacturers too to build on the ecosystem. Boost in the direct tax collections, enabling bigger capital expenditures (declared in budget), incentives to farmer, basic tax slab raised to Rs 5 lac, etc are appreciable moves towards economic growth that will fuel the industrial growth in mid-term.”

Soumitra Gupta, CEO, Togofogo “Budget 2019 adds a new dimension to Digital India. In the last few years, ecosystem in India has already witnessed the first level of growth and the situation has been improving. Start-ups will have a huge contribution to make towards Vision 2030; it’s a great opportunity for them. The concept of digital village will open up new avenues for companies like us and will help to reach to the core of India and hence accessibility to a wider audience.”

Mr Rajesh Ram Mishra, President at India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) “We feel this interim budget by Finance Minister is progressive and inclusive. It focuses on leveraging new technologies to build countrywide digital infrastructure and skill building, driving growth of MSME segment. 1. We applaud the vision to make India a USD 5 Trillion economy in the next 5years. We feel a vibrant ESDM sector will play a key role in realizing this vision. 2. The focus on National program on AI will unleash large opportunity in intelligent electronics and automation and will create new business opportunity in nine focus areas. 3. Making 100,000 villages digital and 10,000 Crore investment in Telecom infrastructure will make universal broadband communication a reality and will lead to pan India deployment of new IoT-based solutions. 4. Participation of private sector in building products in strategic electronics will get a big boost with INR 300,000

Cr Defence spending. 5. Allocation for National Education Mission of INR 37,752 Cr, coupled with the emphasis on Skill Development will enable easier access to skilled workforce for ESDM industry. 6. The tax relief for people with income less than INR Rs 5 lac and interest rate subvention of 2% will help start-ups and MSMEs in ESDM sector as it will relieve pressure on working capital. 7. Announcement of 25% government procurement from MSMEs to bring PSUs procurement under Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is a welcome change. We would like to see more domestically designed, indigenously manufactured ESDM products to come under this and benefit from PMA. 8. While intelligent electronics is bringing new opportunities, to enable a large number of successful product companies in India, we hope to see Angel Tax abolished for ESDM start-ups and we also suggest creation of a dedicated fund to incentive R&D. 9. This being an interim budget, some of the large scale investments needed in semiconductor and electronics for building a digitally secured India should be taken up postelection.”

Mr. Sachin Dev Duggal, Founder & Chief Wizard, Engineer.ai

“Being a global entrepreneur highly invested in the technology industry, with a zeal for AI, it’s excellent to hear the announcement from Finance Minister, Piyush Goyal, that India will create a National Centre for AI. Considering the global market for AI is expected to be at around $190 billion by 2025, the budget puts Indian companies and organizations at the forefront of capturing the AI market. Well done! Alongside a 2% interest subvention for loans to MSMEs, these actions can boost entrepreneurial development across India, which can continue to enhance the Indian economy. The idea of a strong, stable, entrepreneurial Indian economy will help retain and expand global investment capital, as well as increasing global operations across the country. Additionally, the idea of transforming 1 lakh digital villages can have numerous benefits. This includes creating and managing the IT infrastructure to make digital villages possible, and increasing education around technology, thus having the potential to expand the workforce (to carry out the said global operations). Overall, the technology sector made gains today, which offers India a bright future of the efficient solutions that technology could bring to the country, to the continent and to the world as a whole.”

Mr Prashanth G J, CEO

at TechnoBind

tization will go a long way in improving the social and economic fabric of the country - be it creation of jobs, uplifting the lower end of the society reducing the income gap and many more. The announcing of the 5 Lakh Digital Villages is really welcome. It will go a long way to leverage the benefits of technology right up to the grass root level. Especially in a country like India which has always been challenged from a penetration of technology this will be a big boost. Also, another good thing that we got from today’s budget is Income Tax returns being processed within 24 hours. While one needs to wait and watch in terms of the practicality of this but it’s a welcome move in the right direction. Overall it is a pretty good budget!!”

Mr Krishna Raj Sharma, Director & CEO

at iValue InfoSolutions

“Despite being an election year, it’s good to see the government allocating money where it’s required - farmers, middle class families, pension scheme for unorganized sector, more allocation to health, education and defense. Despite missing out on fiscal deficit target for current as well as next fiscal, the FM took rating agency and investors into confidence by explaining the need for supporting farmers which was well received as seen by the market reaction. With GDP growth being upgraded, 0.1% to 0.2% slip of fiscal deficit should be manageable. Good to see FM recognizing and rewarding honest tax-paying middle class citizens with tax exemption up to 5L salary along with higher TDS. Overall good interim budget sending the right signals.”

Mr Rajendra Chitale, CFO at Crayon Software Experts India Private Limited

“It’s a budget with many sections of the society being the beneficiaries. It is specially a poor- and middle class-centric budget as it increases the money in these households. This can trigger consumption and lead to further growth. Phasing out human intervention in tax returns, verification and scrutiny is a good initiative which can help reduce corruption. Overall, it is a good budget.”

Ms. Khyati Mahajan, Founder, MevoFit Acknowledging the government’s idea for mentioning the healthcare services in their interim budget and planning a distress free health care and comprehensive wellness system is a good move towards the citizen’s welfare. The overall development in the healthcare eco-system and tools will help people to monitor and treat their problems easily.

Also, focusing on the participation and empowerment of women in every sector and giving them equal rights is appreciable. Further, Proposals and policies on SME’s are cheering that the government is way determined for startups and small business and giving space to grow their businesses between the big players.

Anand Vilayannur – COE AND Cofounder Tattva Mittal Group “The Budget 2019 has brought good news for almost everyone. A lot was expected from this budget and most of it has been covered. While representing the Budget 2019 Piyush Goyal mentioned in the beginning that RERA and Benami Transaction Act 1900 are helping to bring transparency in the sector. Total number of 1.53 cr houses have been built under PMAY scheme which shows that the sector has fared well in providing homes for the middle and lower class along with the govt. The Budget has proposed to provide the benefit of rolling over capital gains if the investment is made in not just one, but two residential houses. This benefit would be offered for an amount of upto Rs 2 crore which is a once in a lifetime benefit for any individual. With the recent GST meeting announcement and the newly announced budget we truly hope the year sees a positive uptick for the real estate sector. The No tax on Notional rent on second self-occupied home takes of some load from home buyers. The threshold limit for TDS on rental income has been increased to Rs 2.4 lakh from Rs. 1.8 lakh currently, as home owners with rental income have something to cheer about. Income Tax relief on notional rent from unsold houses extended upto 2 years which brings some relief. For individuals with gross income upto 5 lakh get Income Tax rebate, is surely a great step. Even the standard deduction increased from 40,000 to 50,000 should be impactful for middleclass section. Looking in minor details the budget will bring most daily use item now under 0-5% tax slab under GST. The increase in Tax free Gratuity from 10 Lakh to 20 Lakh will indeed become a major relaxation for the middle class. As per the budget speech, last 5 years have witnessed a wave of next gen structural reforms, we are today the 6 th largest economy in the world besides generating high growth rate we contained double digit inflation and resorted fiscal balance by the end of 2018. Infrastructure wise India is fastest highway developer in the world with 27kms of highway built each day which is surely proud news for us. By 2030 India will lead the energy revolution in the world with the electric vehicles as mentioned by Piyush Goyal during the budget in one of the 10 dimensions to be focused by the govt. This new India will only drive on electric vehicles but also would not have to import oil and will produce electricity on our own domestically. With all the challenges set to achieved in place India is poised to become reach $5 Trillion economy in the next 5 years, it looks like the government has already laid the foundation for the coming decade. The country now looks forward for the most interesting and awaited Elections this year.”

Reactions from Startups Mr. Akshay Singhal, Founder, Log 9 materials, working in Nanotechnology Domain “Quarterly filing of GST returns for SMEs and startups is a great relief. However, not much has been offered for the energy sector. We have targets for major Electric Vehicles deployment in India by 2025, our current power generation is just not sufficient to support the same, moreover, battery imports in this sector will drain our foreign exchange reserves in a big way.”

Mr Siddharth Jain, Co-Founder, Vaahika, an online marketplace venture focusing on intercity goods transport “Minimum pension and pay scheme to unskilled workers and farmers is a strong first step towards commitment of allaying poverty. It’s a welcome move by PM towards commitment of removing poverty. Increase threshold for tax free gratuity will definitely benefit salaried middle class of India. It definitely strengthens the safety net for salaried class. Tax break up to Rs 5 lakh will be a big boost for consumer spending and upside for GDP. It definitely is a pro-poor and pro-middle class budget. It definitely is a ‘Payback’ budget, which will be cherished across all segments of society.”

Mr Siddharth Angrish, Founder, Jiyyo.com, an AI-Based Patient Care Coordination Platform The Government’s focus on Ayushman Bharat is giving results. However, a lot more can be achieved. Local players in online healthcare can be roped in for increasing outreach and awareness about such govt initiatives. For example, it should be really easy for any patient to find out the hospitals & services covered under the scheme. Being able to show pricing details to patients will also increase their confidence. Such data can be shared with startups so they have to apply their creativity and create more value added services

Some believe that more needs to be done to boost the morale of those entrepreneurs into Make in India the related ecosystem. Others expect some changes for better in the post-election budget after the new government forms in May 2019.

T

he heart of brand loyalty is always value. Value is not about giving away free things or being the cheapest product. Instead, it is about giving customers what they want. Consumers are always willing to take product of their choice because of the added value they get in return. By 2020, customer experience will overtake price and product as the key brand differentiator. Only 58 percent of companies have a formal engagement program. They must adopt a customer engagement strategy or get left behind. According to Mr. Manoj Seal (Head Strategic Alliance) eGifts4all provide innovative ways for business leaders to excite their customers in the ultra-connected digital age. However, excited and engaged customers tend to bring in 23 percent more profits. With advancing technology and increasing face-to-face encounters, companies must find new ways to get customers excited. Excitement is an emotion that fosters engagement. Positive experiences lead to increasing connections. eGifts4all understands the value of bringing users together.Weprovidebigplatform, offeraplaceforcustomers to meet and create memorable experiences that build loyalty. These experiences generate emotional connections with the brand which leads to better brand attitudes. Our platform been shown to increase sales by 20 percent and more. This disruptive change means that excitement and engagement will matter even more in the future. For example, a company has a customized offering to create an emotional experience when customers receive the offer. The experience feels so valuable that many of us talk about the same. Marketers must understand customers in order to excite them. As per two young mastermind Amaan and Tahir (Founder & Co-founder) - eGifts4all gives variety of ways for business leaders to develop excitement and engagement in consumers. However, the common component in all is putting the customer first. Once the customer is the primary

focus for you, it will be considerably easier to develop innovative approaches to creating customer excitement. Eighty percent of people say that brands are not tailored to their needs. In a world where some brands are doubling down on personalization, smaller brands must also commit to this growing consumer trend. Surveys can be useful if companies use proper analytics to interpret data and implement necessary changes. Get creative with surveys. Many customers will shy away from filling out a lengthy survey, but will be happy to answer a single question. Put a quick poll on social media or after an order, ask a couple of questions when following up with customers, or casually poll customers during checkout at a retail location. Use this data to make better decisions and help employees to better understand the target audience. Business leaders interested in creating a remarkable unboxing experience can use specialty services to create beautifully printed packaging. One study found that while 73 percent of customers want to support companies for doing something meaningful, only 5 percent think that companies actually do so. Social media increase online audiences by as much as 34 percent and boost email sign-ups by a similar amount, according to data. While such delight program does necessarily build brand loyalty in the long term, they can be an exciting way to start a relationship. Not only are items shipped to their home faster, but they receive product of their choice. In some instances, it is a meaningful component of welltimed initiatives, but so is a willingness to try new things. Take a calculated risk in introducing the new concept, and it paid off spectacularly. Similarly, business leaders must ensure that their organizations are daring enough to try new things.
