PORTFOLIO

Preface: Vision, discipline, passion and conscience: four traits describing a great achiever. Yet those powerful combinations reflect my personality and elevate my intention and efforts towards success. Therefore, this Portfolio demonstrates the four elements as my experience and achievements in the field of architecture. Vision: the ability to determine the highest potential of me. It is reflected through the statement of purpose and resume. Discipline: the need of restraint to transform my vision into reality. This is expressed in my academic work, where I gained architectural basics and foundations that allow me to continue the path towards accomplishment. Passion: developing my unique sense of passion that sustains the discipline needed to achieve the vision. This is expressed in my professional and competition work illustrating my passionate towards developing my architectural experience. Conscience: enhancing the spirit of optimism that will guide me in the right sense of direction in life. This is conveyed through my personal works where I express my feelings through drawings and sketches. *

AWARDS 2009 The Best Architectural Graduation Project

Old Airport Region, Jeddah Professor Abdel Moniem Elshorbagy Thesis II 2009

The project objective integrates the following essential aspects, which together create a remarkable change in Saudi Arabia’s intellectual culture: Cultural purpose: to create a major center of cultural societal life of Jeddah by preserving their artistic heritage and literature treasures. Educational purpose: to provide various information and vessels independent learning for the individual or group. Recreational purpose: to play an active role in taking advantage of leisure and provide benefits time to all members of society.

12

Concept and Philosophy: In order to effectively add value of Cultural Knowledge Park in the city and attracting the people especially the youth, the project philosophy is based on the principles of interest, fluidity, relevance and intensity. Interest in the project is a challenge, since our society is nowadays driven by entertainment and not learning. Thus, entertainment is vital tool that will help grow a culturally knowledgeable society. Hence, generating new models that interest the current community is essential to push them forward. In addition, fluidity, relevance and intensity are strategic trusts in the project. Fluidity and relevance mean to be flexible enough for change and to cope with the society’s concern for development. The concept of intensity is about the ability to attract people’s attention, as well as the way of designing, presenting and pricing these services.

Site Analysis: In order to meet the objectives of Cultural Knowledge Park project, selection of the potential site in Jeddah City depends on several factors including: 1.Clear access (located at least on one main road) 2.Near to educational zone 3.Near to historical or cultural zone 4.Located in attractive public mixed use zone Jeddah City has several prominent neighbourhoods such as Historical Core, Waterfront, King Abdul Aziz Airport, Ubhour and Old Airport. According to the mentioned criteria of the site selection and potential opportunities, Old Airport neighbourhood is the appropriate site for Cultural Knowledge Park project. Prospective Benefits: The old airport neighborhood provides prospective opportunities and benefits for the project context. Recently, the neighborhood is considered as City Centre Megaproject zone, a strategic development in the centre of Jeddah City for the next 20 years which means comprises many chances including: 1.A unique opportunity to create a significant and meaningful expansion of urban fabric in the heart of the city. It also has the potential to play an important role in re-establishing Jeddah as the main tourist and commercial destination of the region. 2.Due to the new developed fabric of residential, retail, educational and commercial programs, it will encourage the social interaction, which is a fundamental element of the traditional fabric of Jeddah. 3.The neighborhood will act as a model for sustainable innovation in the Middle East. The neighbourhood will fully integrate educational area into the city. By strategically locating cultural institutions adjacent to the educational area, they will serve as a link between the educational area and the commercial centre. This will help to make education as a socio-economic generator for Jeddah. 15

Concept Development

Š Heather Hawksford

Since my society is very family-oriented, I developed the concept from the sense of unity, and feeling safe. Furthermore, this is represented by the parents relationship with their kids and comforting feelings of being at home. The building form symbolizes the sympathy, privacy, and stability. The building design allows more variety of apartment types; apartments in higher level floors have a larger space available and are more luxurious apartments with the best view of the city and the sea.

Project Site Location 41

Concept Development According to the site topography, the zones are distributed from the highest point to the lowest point from the most public to the most private zone. Since the project is located on contours and surrounded by three sides of sea water, the main idea is using these levels in order to create interesting feeling of hierarchy and harmony. Mostly, every function is located on a level or sometimes two levels. The zones are connected by walkways, routes, bridges and staircases. The distribution of the facilities is organic which complements the surrounding landscape. In addition, the health zone is isolated on a separate island and some of its facilities are under water. The rooms for massage and spa will be glassed overlooking the life under the sea.

Jeddah National Park It is a public park located at the historical downtown of Jeddah. The main purpose is to provide recreational focal point for the family, and for kids in particular. My main focus was on a kids playground area. The concept is derived from the idea of heritage preservation and thus it was inspired from Hejazi houses. The idea is to make these houses as attractive toys placed at the colourful playground area. Therefore, the area acts as an open air museum of discovering different types of heritage houses and their elements. ALTILAL VILLA Altial residential scheme is a project planned in Al Madinah Al Munowarah, Saudi Arabia. The residential units are provided to host the mid to high-class of Saudi families. The main concept was to incorporate “the inclined line” which was applied in three dimensions of the plan, elevation and space (vertically). The circulation flow inside the villa (cross section) was continuous from the main entrance to the living room at the end of the house and from the living room to the master room moving from the most public zone to the most private zone. In order to add a spirit to the house, daylight was merged with the space of the ground and upper floors’ corridors by providing two skylights in the house. Al Madinah Al Munowarah, Jeddah 59
